Loyal & local. WHEN I LOOK BACK ON MY "STYLE" HISTORY I SEE LIGHT-UP SHOES WITH PINK TIGHTS. Adidas slides with socks. Glitter and rhinestones. Black, more black, then gray. Then color. I see pencil skirts and silk shirts. Those red heels that I cussed every step of the way. The horse show outfit. The leather bag that lasted ten years of torture. I see blue jeans and boots and ball caps and crispy white tees.

Fashion is such an indicator of the chapters in our lives. Our style can be as simple as gym shorts and bare feet or it can be polished, like the little black dress with the low back. It lends us the confidence and comfort to go about our business and make a statement about our day or about who we are. This issue is filled with bright, creative minds who are loyal to keeping Missoula local. While we live far from the epicenter of fashion, Missoula designers are here to remind us that clothing can be produced locally, and it can survive in style! The silks, the colors, the buttery leather—I hope your style speaks to you and lets you celebrate the person you see in the mirror.

Your Passport to Adventure MEET THE NEW HONDA PASSPORT AT DENNY MENHOLT UNIVERSITY HONDA

ARTICLE GABE SEMENZA | PHOTOGRAPHY PAMELA DUNN-PARRISH

Missoula Valley Lifestyle | September 2019

THE 2019 HONDA PASSPORT ELITE AWD IS MADE FOR WESTERN MONTANA. Ok, maybe not officially, but its versatility is unmatched in this region. Western Montana, particularly the Missoula and surrounding areas, beckons this type of vehicle. It had a can-do attitude as I traversed Blue Mountain’s washboard dirt road and yet, we blended in with commuters bustling along the main veins of our city. The Honda Passport handled well, thanks to its torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system, the V-6’s 280 horsepower, all-season tires, and intelligent controls that adjust with the road. The crossover SUV responds precisely to the available traction at each wheel depending on whether you travel dry ground or across snow, ice, mud, or wet roadways. Named Car and Driver’s Best Midsize Two-Row SUV, the Passport boasts four-wheel independent suspension—a great choice when it comes to those uneven, rocky roads—and enough muscle to haul a trailer and still pass slower traffic. The vehicle is practical in what it can handle, and it didn’t fall short of getting up to speed. The push-button gear selection is a polite nod to modern times and it didn’t make me miss a manual shifter. Every Passport comes equipped with Honda Sensing®, which the company calls “an intelligent suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies that can help you stay aware on the road and could even help avoid a collision.” The Road Departure Mitigation System, Collision Mitigation Braking System and Lane Keeping Assist System, for example, can determine if you cross detected lanes without signaling or face an unavoidable collision, and provide assistance as needed.

LOCAL DESIGNERS SET THE STYLE FOR LOCAL FASHION

BENSON MEDIA, ATHENA PHOTOGRAPHY & PAMELA DUNN-PARRISH

ARTICLE ERIKA FREDRICKSON | PHOTOGRAPHY ANDY BENSON WITH

Gracie Niswanger

FOR THE MOST PART, MISSOULA VALLEY HASN’T PAID MUCH MIND TO THE FASHION RUNWAYS OF BIG CITIES. Who cares if velvet is back? Who even knows which new summer colors are all the rage in New York City? Beyond the newest Chaco design or the ripped-jean-Converse-All-Star look, we’ve prided ourselves on not being too fashion aware. But in the past few years, as local designers emerge, that attitude has begun to change. Missoula’s down-toearth aesthetic seems like it also has room for experimentation. For several years now, Betty’s Divine, owned by Aimee McQuilkin, has been one of the drivers in getting Missoulians to seriously think about clothes in a fun way. It’s a shop that has also supported and encouraged local designers to succeed. More recently, The General Public, owned by designer Allison Reaves, is a fantastically curated shop that feels like an art gallery of jewelry, clothing, and decor that is refreshingly bold. There is now an inordinate number of designers popping up in town giving the local population the opportunity to spread their wings into new fashions that make this town still feel vibrant and quirky, but also with a little more aesthetic know-how than ever before. Almost 10 years ago, Julia La Tray spotted some bright leather bikini tops on eBay and decided she had to have them. Part of her desire for those hot pink and canary yellow bikinis sprung from a matter of habit. For a few years she’d played in an all-women rock band called Cloven Hoof, who loved to get on stage dressed in outrageous costumes. And even though the band was no longer together, Julia hadn’t lost her taste for color and design when it came to clothing. “That part of my brain was always on the lookout,” Julia said. “I didn’t know what those bikinis were going to become, but I knew they were going to become something.” Julia hadn’t done any sewing before but she bought a pile of the bikinis and turned them into dresses and shirts. That same year she entered the Project Selvedge competition, which was run by the now-defunct fabric store Selvedge Studio and modeled after the television show in which fashion innovators solve a fashion challenge in order to win an award. That year ignited Julia’s passion and led her to start her own fashion business called DonkeyGirl Designs. “The donkey is my power animal,” she said, laughing. “I relate to their stubborness. Who did I think I was starting this business?” Julia co-runs a showroom behind Noteworthy just off the Hip Strip where she displays her clothing alongside several other local designers. She works with all kinds of silks—raw, velvet, charmeuse, shantung. She hand dyes the fabric and creates loose-fitting cuts that can accommodate a range of sizes. She has to keep a balance between her personal JULIA LA TRAY, DONKEYGIRL DESIGNS @donkeygirldesigns

The membership model of healthcare continues to grow. Lesley said more than 1,500 clinics like CostCare exist across the U.S., with numbers increasing as health insurance premiums skyrocket. CostCare Direct members include people without insurance coverage and members with high deductible coverage, as well as local small businesses that offer the benefit to their employees. “Businesses can increase employee retention and decrease employees’ time away from work due to illness,” Lesley said. “They’ve saved thousands of dollars offering this to employees.” Swimming against the tide is sure to cause waves, but Lesley and Carol are loyal to their transparency with patients and to their personal aspirations. “When we first brought this model to Missoula, it was so different. We were two women, brave enough to step out of a traditional emergency room setting and try something new,” Lesley said. “We love our team. If we didn’t have such an amazing team supporting us in all we do, we wouldn’t be where we are today.” Lesley doesn’t waste time thinking about frustrations. She’s working to form a statewide network of direct primary care providers so that if a member of CostCare Direct needs medical care in another part of Montana, they can visit another direct care provider, rather than make a costly visit to the ER. “This model thrives in a free market,” she said. And it’s her focus on the positives that keeps her head in the game and the wheels turning. “My much larger goal is to fight for transparent, cost-effective healthcare,” Lesley said. “Everyone wins when patients know the cost of their care.”

memes, too. Adding a healthy dose of humor to a harried lice situation can diffuse stress. “If you get that call, or just notice lice when you are combing your child’s hair, keep your sense of humor and perspective,” advised Nancy Siegel, professional lice treatment provider. Nancy, along with Susan Snetsinger, owns and operates Lice Going!, Missoula’s only professional lice treatment service. Their expertise can address an embarrassing infestation, which parents tend to keep hidden under hat.

“It involves a thorough examination of all hair using a methodical, strand-by-strand approach,” Nancy explained. This safe, effective, manual technique ensures removal of all lice. “And no hair has to be cut in the process,” she added. When nights of fussing, combing, and medicated shampooing go on too long, and time becomes money, that’s when parents often call Lice Going!. “By the time they call us, they’ve often already tried several overthe-counter products, and they’re not cheap,” Nancy noted. “So, we have a range of options, depending on your resources. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to take care of it immediately.” Susan shared one story. “I got called by a family that had been dealing with an on-going head lice infestation for six months. The family did not have in-home laundry facilities so they had an extra challenge of time and expense in having to make lots of trips to the local laundromat. I provided them a full treatment, which involves a free follow-up, to make sure they were 100% clear of all lice and nits. They were finally rid of it, and grateful to be out of crisis mode.” Fun fact: Lice leave behind a scent on the head of an infected individual, a “green light” signal to other lice that will make that head a more attractive target. That’s one way an infection can extend into weeks of aggravation. “Twice I have had clients call within a week or so of being ‘cleared’ after treatment to say they just found a bug in their child’s hair,” [Nancy or Susan said]. Even though the parents started off anxious, I was able to help them understand that they were actually really successful in halting a re-infestation in its tracks by staying vigilant and catching the problem early!” Vigilance, however, is not the problem when it comes to panicked parents who launch an all-out defense against their home invasion. Nancy likes to counteract that bag and bleach mode with some informed, common sense. “They’re not like bed bugs,” she said. “Remember that it is people that get lice, not houses, and not your pets. And remember that lice need the heat of the head to stay alive. There’s easy things you can do to break that life cycle. Even just setting bedding and toys outside, or away from use, for two days can work.” Lice Going! offers education, lice removal, community support, and, most importantly, peace of mind. Parents can make a confidential appointment for an initial check and consult for twenty-five dollars. Just go to licegoing.com. “Remember,” Nancy said, “You’re not the first to confront this, and you won’t be the last.” September 2019 | Missoula Valley Lifestyle
