Letter from the Editor HOME. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, acceptance and a shelter from the outside world—a place were you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, while some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. Like all expecting mothers, I was given lots of advice

The first came from a very wise friend of mine about the importance of creating a home that feels like a safe haven. In a world that can be cruel, let the home feel like a place that builds you back up with love. She told me to make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and show my love for them every day. The second thing that has stuck with me throughout the years is advice that came from a stranger. I was told to take the time to enjoy all the small moments with my family and really soak it in instead of getting caught up in all of the daily tasks that can steal our

Although I am not perfect at any of this, it is definitely something I continually strive for and work hard to get better at every day. March is our home and design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in is not easy. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek into some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. I pray your home is full of love, peace and health this spring! Investment Standards: Eating Our Own Cooking By Michael J. Searcy, ChFC®, CFP®, AIFA®
President & CEO at Searcy Financial Services, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm
When you receive a diagnosis and course of treatment from a doctor, do you ever wonder if they would be suggesting the same path for someone close to them, maybe their own mother? When the mechanic offers a list of services they suggest for your vehicle, do you wonder if they would be doing the same for their own? When you work with a professional of any kind, you exercise an extreme amount of trust and want the assurance that they’re working in your best interest. In essence, you want to believe that whatever they would suggest to you, that they would be following the same suggestions themselves or for their loved ones. So, how do you know if this is the type of relationship you’re getting with your financial advisor? Well, here are some standards we follow in my firm. If you asked your advisor about these standards, how would they answer? •
•
•
We’re not investing your money in risky ventures, chasing high commissions. As a Fee-Only firm, we never earn any commissions and receive no incentives for the way we invest your money. We’re not investing your money based on a directive sent down from a corporate office. As an independent Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), we analyze our clients’ investment goals and risk tolerance level to determine the strategy with the best potential to meet their goals. We’re not investing your money one way and investing our money another way. As the saying goes, we eat our own cooking. Our investment team implements rigorously researched investment strategies designed to help our clients and ourselves acquire, grow and preserve wealth.
While each of these standards is set to strengthen our relationship with those we work with, there may be none more telling than the fact that our money is invested side by side with our clients’. We don’t just talk about our commitment to our service or the knowledge, research and continuing education that back up our investment strategies. We actually believe in these strategies as evidenced by many of our personal accounts being invested the same way as our clients’. Despite one’s best efforts or interests, you can’t handle everything in life by yourself. There is going to be a need for professional help in many areas of life, and my hope is that people are served by professionals who have their best interest at the forefront of their relationship and aren’t manipulated into doing things that the professional wouldn’t do for themselves or their friends and family. Is your advisor eating their own cooking? If you are interested in a financial second opinion, we would be happy to help you determine if you’re headed toward a successful financial future.

They believe wallcoverings add interest, texture, depth and character to a space. Inspiration for their wallcoverings comes from anywhere and everywhere. “Inspiration comes often and sometimes when I least expect it,” Cochran says. “My camera is full of little moments throughout life that strike me as interesting or beautiful in some way.” Porter finds that in the high-end, sophisticated arena of interior design, wallcoverings are incorporated into a space like fine art. Their desire to think outside of current trends gives their products a timeless quality. “They use what they truly love and what they intuitively and inherently respond to,” Porter says. “Our products can move people, shake people and get people talking. It goes beyond a trend when you are working towards this as a goal, as opposed to creating what is selling or ‘what people love right now.’ I think we will be around for a while because of this and will outlast trends. We just follow our instinct as artists, as opposed to the market or industry trends.” Today, the company has shifted its focus from branding to now designing products for other larger companies. They’re also licensing their patterns, which Porter notes has opened the door to working in different areas such as designing rugs, commercial grade fabrics and hospitality vinyl wallcoverings as well as exploring carpet and tile. “We are moving from being identified primarily as a hand-painted wallcovering company to an all-encompassing design company,” Porter says. “To be adapting into more and more types of product is super exciting and invigorating. It is the best way to work as well-equipped artists do, in exploring many different types of media simultaneously.” CONTINUED >

HOME SWEET HOME THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF JILL HALL’S HOME STRIKES A BALANCE BETWEEN SIMPLICITY AND PERSONALITY

Johnson County Lifestyle | March 2020
ARTICLE RILEY COWING PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
JILL HALL’S HOME IN JOHNSON COUNTY IS SIMPLE— PLENTY OF NATURAL LIGHT, DECOR THAT DOES NOT CLUTTER BUT RATHER PROVIDES A POP OF COLOR AND TEXTURE, MODERN LIGHT FIXTURES AND PLANTS HANGING ON THE WALL TO ADD LIFE TO A CORNER OF THE ROOM. This simplicity was intentional. “Life is so busy, and we seem to acquire so much stuff,” Hall says. “For me, the more we can simplify, the better. Our family is busy with four active boys, and my husband and I both work busy, full-time roles, so it helps to have a bright, light home.” When faced with planning her home’s interior design, Hall recalled aesthetics from designers she loved when living in Los Angeles. She describes working with Molly from Brasstacks, a building design firm located in Kansas City, as a perfect fit.

Johnson County Lifestyle | March 2020
“She understood my vision, and we clicked immediately when I sent her some images I had gathered,” she says. “I have always been drawn to white and light—more neutral tones, natural colors from earth as an inspiration.” Her favorite space in the home is the kitchen, complete with a lot of bright light. “I didn’t want the traditional upper style cabinets and layout,” she says. “I wanted to be able to see the boys playing outside while I was cooking in the kitchen—there is a spot right behind the sink where you can find me quite often.”

The open concept they achieved provides ample room for their family, including four boys ages 4-10, to spend time together and apart. “Two of the boys will often be at the dining room table working on a puzzle and then another at the island doing homework and then another in the living room lounging,” she says. Each room is complete with accessories, like a patterned pillow, wooden tapers, an ottoman or hanging artwork with bold colors. Because of the neutral background, established by white walls and a mostly muted color scheme, Hall is free to change out these accessories from season to season. In their bedroom, Hall kept white bedding (a style choice she has maintained since college) and will change something simple, like the pillows, to create a shift in the space. “I just love the crisp, clean look,” she says. “I will change out the lumbar pillow and blankets to change out the look easily. Simple, and then add the spark.” Hall doesn’t believe that neutral equates to boring, and she finds that a neutral background can allow accessories to shine brighter. “I am drawn to little details that can make a big impact—many times that will be layering,” she says. “I also wanted to accomplish a space where we can be as a family—open, bright and allow for our boys to grow up and enjoy their time at home.”

Locating Hidden Assets in Divorce
In a divorce, courts require parties to identify all marital assets and debts. The exact way in which this takes place can vary. However, most courts require parties to disclose their assets and debts in financial statements early in the case. Discovery usually takes place to various degrees in a divorce as well. There could be interrogatories and requests for production propounded related to marital assets and debt. Depositions often take place. The lawyers may also issue subpoenas. However, some parties may, unfortunately, decide to hide marital assets in a divorce. They might hide assets with the illicit motive that if the court does not discover them, they will get to retain it. This leads many to wonder how they can find and identify hidden assets that are out there. The facts can vary in every case, but below are some common ways: 1.
Bank records can sometimes identify hidden assets. Bank statements can show money coming in and being paid from various sources that do not add up, including cash deposits and withdrawals. They can also show evidence of hidden bank accounts
2.

where one is transferring or depositing money. Tax returns can be useful in many cases in locating hidden assets. Many of the schedules that are part of the tax returns can identify the existence of assets that were not disclosed. Social media is becoming more prominent in locating hidden assets. Parties may post photos of assets like boats, vacation properties or jewelry. They also might make posts about these hidden assets. Electronic evidence such as email and text message evidence might be revealing. Parties might have emails where they get monthly statements that involve the hidden assets. They also might have electronic evidence on their devices regarding the purchase itself, including purchase agreements, sales information and statements relating to what they still owe on a note. Private investigators can sometimes help to locate hidden assets. They might be able to take photos and videos of properties, vehicles, boats and other hidden assets. Credit card statements can often
be invaluable. Credit cards are sometimes the way they purchase these assets. Their spouse might not even know the credit card exists. When one has credit card debt their spouse does not know about, or other obligations, this can be problematic. When a party has hidden debt their spouse did not know about, this can be upsetting.
In the end, parties should be aboveboard and honest about their marital assets and debt. If the family court judge discovers that a party is being dishonest, this can be very damaging to their credibility. It can also result in a court setting aside a completed divorce to deal with the hidden assets. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. THAT IS CERTAINLY TRUE WITH THE USE OF FLORALS AS THEY ARE BACK IN FULL BLOOM. Decorating with florals is a great way to bring the outside in. Adding simple pops of color with mother nature in mind can add a whimsical and playful touch to any room and creates a feeling of freshness and subtle femininity. We are sharing a few ways that area KC designers are using floral patterns. A. I found this Deer Head in the back of Anthropologie. It called my name as I was just starting a kitchen remodel at the Lake of the Ozarks. I ended up using this piece as the focal point of the entire space! My clients loved it!" -Jenny Manka www.mankainteriors.com B. This playful floral patterned drape was carefully selected to integrate with the rooms colorful palette. -Tran+Thomas Design https://tranthomasdesign.com C. I love brining the outside in whenever possible. I added these psychedelic floral chairs to what was otherwise a masculine dining room for a bit of whimsy!"- Jenny Manka
E.

Plus they tie the room to the beautiful trees outside. --Jennifer Surface, Surface to Surface Design and Construction E.
