Summer Gardening Tips & Tr i c k s THE SUMMER SEASON IS THE PERFECT TIME TO GROW A MAGNIFICENT GARDEN

WITH WARMER TEMPERATURES AND THE SUN SHINING BRIGHT, SUMMER IS THE IDEAL TIME TO SET THE FRAMEWORKS FOR A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN. Here are some tips and tricks to keep your plants thriving for the months ahead.

14

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | June 2020

WATER IS KEY As the days get warmer, it is important to make sure that your plants have enough water, especially vegetable gardens. Use a soaker hose to ensure that your garden maintains enough moisture. It’s not about how often you water your garden, but for how long. KEEP YOUR PLANTS FRESH Often times, it is easy for plants to die during the dry spells of summer. It is important in order to maintain your garden to cut off any dead flowers that you may come across. Once or twice a week, walk through your garden and assess your plants. Getting rid of any faded florals will actually keep many blooming the rest of the season. SEASONAL STAPLES Summer is great for planting and harvesting warm-weather vegetables such as corn, eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes. Vegetables such as lettuce and spinach thrive in shady spots, especially as the summer progresses. Vegetables to sop harvesting during the summer months include asparagus and rhubarb as they need to gather energy to produce a healthy crop of leaves to sustain them through the end of summer. FLORALS THAT CAN TAKE THE HEAT Flowers that do well in warmer months include angelonia, petunias, and salvia. Keep your flowerbeds full and plenty with these summertime stunners. Dahlias and cannas are other beautiful bulbs that do well in the summer sun. LAWN CARE In addition to gardens, lawn care is also critical to the longevity of your outdoor space.
