Food, Glorious Food ARE YOU HUNGRY, AUSTIN? We’re sure you will be when you read—or should we say devour—this issue, the most drool-worthy one of the year: the Foodie issue! We spent the last few months scouring the streets in search of the most delicious bites Austin has to offer, and we found our favorites to fill these pages. Narrowing down all the sensational local flavors and global cuisines in town was no easy task, but we are confident this issue is an accurate representation of our emerging reputation as a true dining destination. While we don’t like to play favorites, the Foodie issue is near and dear to our hearts. After all, food is not only nourishing (and delicious) but it also brings people together—whether it’s a special anniversary dinner, a much-needed lunch break with coworkers, a friend’s birthday party or even a casual weeknight meal with family. Food is often considered one of life’s great pleasures. Consider this issue your foodie guide to Austin, featuring the best places to

SERIOUS I.T. SECURITY FOR SERIOUS CUSTOMERS. Need to make sure you are stepped up to the cyber age? Attacks against small and medium businesses are up 400%+ from last year because attackers know that you are the weak link. Hackers know that you are too busy running your business to effectively manage its security, and that most small IT shops are just installing antivirus, giving you a firewall, and hoping for the best. A good back up doesn’t help you when you are breached and your company data is sold on the darkweb.

“G

RATEFULNESS IS A PRIVILEGE OF CIVILIZED SOCIETIES AND HUMAN BEINGS,” SAYS PEPE ZEVADA, ONE OF THE MOST REPUTABLE VISIONARIES AND ENTREPRENEURS OF OUR TIME. Pepe believes in tradition, family and one’s behavior as being an indicator of one’s character. He believes that suc-

cess does not change people, but rather magnifies who they are. Today, Pepe is the tried-and-true brand owner of Z Tequila, which originated here in Austin in 2008 and derives from a long line of brands and businesses Pepe has had the opportunity to be a part of throughout his life. Pepe has created a whole new concept of liquor in Austin when he launched Z Tequila, and today, people all over the world celebrate over his all-natural, smooth-tasting spirits. More importantly, Pepe is known as a renowned, beloved family member and friend of many. He is a man of class, honesty and compassion and lives by these values daily which have built his unforgettable legacy over the years. He was born on Jan. 21, 1942, in Montpellier, France, where he then moved to Mexico shortly after being born with his family and grew up as a young man under the guidance of his two wonderful parents, Jose Angel Zevada and Maria Del Socorro Gomez Molleda. He was their beloved only child, and he looked up to them throughout his life and to this day. Pepe moved from Mexico to Austin in 2008 and was approached in the same year to start his own tequila line by a local distiller and

THE NEIGHBORHOOD GEM THIS RUSTIC ITALIAN RESTAURANT AND BAR OFFERS A FAMILYORIENTED ATMOSPHERE FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY TOGETHER ARTICLE ROSLYN BOND | PHOTOGRAPHY BRANDON WEBER III

24

Austin Life | October 2019

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR NEIGHBORS, FRIENDS, FOOD, WINE, BEER AND COCKTAILS, LOOK NO FURTHER! Baretto in the North Hills of Austin, serves handcrafted cocktails and Italian specialty dishes while providing a space for families and friends to enjoy an evening together. Owner Donnie Johnson understands the priority of family and friends in everyday life and has created a space for them to come together and enjoy delicious food in a relaxing, ambient setting. The Italian restaurant bar is a friendly, fun and cozy place to hang out. Donnie opened Baretto because he says he enjoys meeting new people, entertaining, cooking and throwing parties, which drew him into the restaurant and bar industry. He believes the service industry has given him the daily opportunity for a career doing what he enjoys: making people happy. He says the feeling is enticing when he is able to be a part of his guests’ special holiday, birthday or anniversary and make it a memorable experience. He thoroughly enjoys making new friends. Donnie has appreciated growing up in Austin and being a partner in an iconic restaurant realm and also having the opportunity to present a new concept of a restaurant and bar into the community. “I love being part of the old-school Austin vibe and the exploding culinary scene this city has to offer. It’s the best of both worlds,” he says. He has spent 24 years in business management and has worked his way up through the restaurant industry starting off as a busboy from the time he was a freshman in college. By the time he was a senior at the University of Texas, he decided he wanted to become a general manager as soon as possible. Four years after that, he opened Eddie V’s Arboretum and fulfilled that goal. After a couple of moves and five years in wine sales, Donnie found an opportunity to return to the restaurant business as an owner and partnered with Stan Adams, who has owned the Brick Oven since 1984 as well as Siena. Baretto’s chef makes simple shared plates, small appetizers, artisan cheese and meats. They also have a great partnership with the Brick Oven so they can serve their menu too—brick oven handmade pizza, pasta and salads. Baretto weekly specials include half-off bottles of wine Sunday and Monday, and Happy hour is from 4–7 p.m. daily, which includes $5 wine features, $5 well drinks, $1 off Baretto craft cocktails, $1 off pints of draft beers and $2 off kitchen items. Popular menu items include the Combo Board—Cheese & Charcuterie. The cheese is Antonelli’s 1655 Gruyere, white sharp cheddar and Brie de Nagis with nuts, fruit, Walker Texas honeycomb and bread. The charcuterie includes Antonelli’s, Saucisson Rouge salami, Gin & Juice salami and Copa with olives, pickles, peppers and bread. Both Brick Oven and Baretto team up with different schools and fundraisers to make donations toward the schools that are close by and have relationships with the parents and faculty. “We are in a perfect spot for our neighborhood friends to have a downtown experience up the street and close to home,” Donnie says.
