DELICIOUS & NUTRICIOUS EASY & HEALTHY GO HAND IN HAND IN THESE QUICK AND CLEAN LUNCHES
EASY, PORTABLE LUNCHES ARE JUST THE THING FOR A FAMILY OUTING OR DAILY LUNCH AT SCHOOL AND WORK. There’s a misconception, however, that easy and delicious equals unhealthy. As a certified health coach, Bailey Morris encourages a healthier approach to life. She says, “I’ve always been very health conscious. I love helping people become healthier and enjoy happier lives by helping them become more health conscious in their decisions.” When it comes to lunch, Bailey reminds us, “What you put in your body is very important. Those nutrients are what’s going to fuel you throughout the day and keep you strong and healthy.” Consider a simple sandwich or wrap. With easy, intentional changes, they become nutritious as well as being delicious! “Build your sandwich or wrap using a whole grain base. You can stack it with turkey, cheese, lettuce, and tomato,” says Bailey. “Instead of mayonnaise, use dijon mustard, avocado, or hummus.” She says, “Avoid processed cheese and look at the ingredients if you’re using packaged meat because sometimes there are fillers and other hidden ingredients. Remember - the fewer ingredients, the better.” “You can use chicken breast that you’ve cooked ahead of time,” adds Bailey. “Go ahead and shred it or dice it, then freeze it – that way you can have little packets of prepared meat ready to make a wrap.” Add bell pepper strips or cucumber slices for a fresh, crisp bite. For sides, fill up on fruits and vegetables. Grapes, orange or apple slices, carrot sticks and cherry

tomatoes are all finger foods and easy for kids to eat. Bailey suggests, “consider adding a packet of humus or guacamole to dip veggies.” 12

ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED) Learning to play an instrument contributes to the development of a variety of life skills. “There have been so many studies on piano training and how it works both sides of your brain, as you’re using your right and left hand while having to read music staves,” says Amy. “It’s so valuable because it helps in other areas like problem-solving and hand-eye coordination.” Mark adds, “The violin also takes tremen-

dous hand-eye coordination because you’ve got a bow and you’ve got the instrument itself. But also with music, you have to learn to count rhythm. That is very helpful in terms of developing math skills.” Tanya Cundey, whose daughter, Braylin, currently takes violin lessons, agrees. She says, “I think learning to play an instrument and reading music helps develop the brain and helps with language development and intelligence. And she is having fun doing it!” “Additionally,” says Mark, “for any instrument, you’re learning how to practice, set aside time to get better at something, and challenge yourself to reach certain goals. You’re learning to master your own instrument. It can be difficult, even frustrating or challenging, but it’s a great discipline to learn because it’s a valuable life lesson to learn to persevere to achieve something.” “Music is the language of the heart,” says Mark. “When words fail, music never does because it’s an unspoken language. It’s such a powerful medium that touches people from all different socioeconomic backgrounds, and it’s something that cuts across the race divide. It’s a gift from God, and God uses it touch people’s lives in a powerful way. To be able to instill that in children and to see them develop a love for music, embrace it, and produce their own music - it’s just so incredibly fulfilling and rewarding.” For more information on piano lessons, Amy can be reached by email at AmyPhillipsPiano @gmail.com or by calling 706-437-0697. While Mark is not currently accepting new students, Amy and Mark are available and enjoy playing for special occasions and ceremonies. Glory Chery at the piano with Amy Phillips 18

IF THERE’S ONE THING WE LOVE NEARLY AS MUCH AS OUR KIDS, IT’S OUR PETS. Really, pets are a second kind of kid, and we all want to give them the very best care possible. A very special local groomer, Fur Babies Mobile Grooming, puts the biggest smiles on local pets’ faces, and parent after parent shares that their pet actually looks forward to grooming visits! Shannon McCarty and her team come to you, and for the pups and kitties, it’s like their best friend has come to play. We happen to know a few Fur Babies clients, so we “interviewed” each pup to see what their favorite humans, toys, and treats are. Quirky and lovable, these fur babies could never disappoint!

FAMILY BUSINESS AND PASSION THAT BEGAN WITH HER PARENTS IN 1977. “We’ve been around for a long time, we have a love of pets, and we know they all need love in their own unique way,” shares Ashton. Over the years, Ashton’s dad, Richard B. Lord, made sure she learned all aspects of the business. “It’s all I’ve ever known,” she says. “I learned to clean kennels, take care of the pets spending the night, and how to bathe, blow dry and cut hair.” With Ashton’s years of experience and love of animals, she’s the perfect resource for things to consider when choosing a pet boarding facility. Here’s what Ashton suggests when deciding who will care for your pets while you travel.
INTERACT WITH THE STAFF “It’s good to walk your pet through and see how they react with the staff,” says Ashton. Also note how the staff respond to your pet and ask if a temperament test is required for boarding. Consider if the staff keeps a record for your pet while it’s in residence. “We keep a little report card on each one,” says Ashton, “so we know if they’ve [gone regularly] and whether they went inside or outside.” The Paradise Kennels staff also makes notes on feedings, medication administration, and general demeanor.

is generally maintained and allows you to observe staff during their normal routine. “You can take a tour any time of day at our facility,” she adds. “We want you to be able to see what’s going on.”
“At our facility, the whole kennel that your pet stays in is indoors,” explains Ashton. “There’s a half door in the middle that separates the kennel into two parts so that we can clean one side then the other and not interfere with the pet.”

ITEMS FROM HOME Inquire about supplies provided and what you can bring from home. “We have bedding, bowls, food, water – everything in-house,” says Ashton, “but some people like to bring their pet’s blankie or favorite toy. We welcome any of those items you’d like to bring to keep them comfortable.”
GENERAL PET CARE Consider what pet care services are available, including options for emergency and non-emergency medical treatments. “We have Paradise Animal Hospital right next door,” says Ashton. “It is very convenient because we have a lot of elder pets that stay. It’s nice that Dr. Steven Knittel is next door and that we have his number 24 hours a day in case of emergency.” “We also have some pets that get work done when they come to stay, such as their yearly exam. So there is the convenience of it as well as safety.” An added bonus can be found in facilities that offer grooming services. Your pet returns to you freshly groomed and a bit pampered too. “You can opt for grooming if you’d like,” Ashton adds. “Some just need a bath; some need a bath, toenails, de-shed, or haircuts – whatever you like, we can accommodate.” Paradise Kennels provides services including boarding, grooming, and farewell services that include a crematory and pet cemetery. Visit ParadiseKennelsGa.com for details. Ashton’s passion for nurturing crosses over into her home life as well. “I have a zoo of my own,” she says. “I have 6 dogs, 2 cats, a husband and a son, hermit crabs, a turtle, and a house full of plants. They’re the best thing in the world.” 28

Spelling It Out IS IT PARTY TIME? LAWN LETTERS WILL GET THE FUN STARTED!
THERE’S JUST SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT SEEING YOUR NAME OR A THANK YOU MESSAGE SPELLED OUT ACROSS THE LAWN IN LARGE, COLORFUL LETTERS. It brings a smile to those being celebrated and allows those passing by to be part of the festivities. “The reactions we get are why we do what we do,” says Lawn Letters owner Angela VanGroll. “Seeing the joy of people realizing that someone thought of them and did something special for them…that’s definitely my favorite part - being able to bring that happiness to a variety of people.” Angela brought Lawn Letters to the Evans area in 2017. She says, “The overall concept of putting the letters in yards is not my original concept. My friend and I had seen this in Texas, and I got into this business in 2015 when my family and I lived in Oklahoma.” “We relocated to the Augusta area in 2016 because of my husband’s job. After being here for about nine months, I knew that I wanted to bring this concept to the area.”
