In this issue, we pay homage to all the essential workers and businesses showing up in a big way in our time of need. As you’ll see in our Good Times section, our essential workers come from all walks of life - we are so proud of them! And, in our Giving Back feature, all it took is one group of committed individuals to accomplish so much. Add to that, all the businesses that have transformed the way they serve their customers, plus the school districts tackling the challenge of online learning, and we find ourselves overcoming and persevering in spite of everything. And, lastly, we want to take a moment to pay our respects to all of those that have lost their lives to COVID-19. We dedicate this issue to all the families who are grieving loved ones. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KAT KATTLER

HELLO EVERYONE, I AM KAT THE OWNER & PHOTOGRAPHER FOR KAT KATTLER PHOTOGRAPHY. My business is located in Downtown Westfield, MA. I specialize in high school senior portraits. I am professionally trained, and I graduated from Hallmark Institute of Photography in 2006. For the nine years following, I worked with other photographers, gaining experience and perfecting the trade. In 2015, I was excited to open the doors to Kat Kattler Photography. My interest in photography started when I was a young child. At any given time, you could find me photograph-

ing my toys in my bedroom with just a simple point and shoot film camera. As a student in school, it was difficult for me because I was a visual learner. Words didn’t come easy, but photos did. It wasn’t until I attended Hallmark that I knew that this was my passion and that this is what I was meant to do. I am an introvert, by nature. But, as soon as I have a camera in hand, or even just talk about photography, I am a whole different person with confidence. I absolutely love everything about photography, but senior portraits have a special place in my heart. I strive to make it a fun experience, while creating images that represent who they are at that moment. Senior portraits are important because it is the first time when the experience is all about them. It has taken them 12 years of conforming to the standard school photo, to finally break free and express to the world who they are.

TIPS FOR A GREAT SENIOR SESSION 1. The summer before your senior year is the best time to get your senior session done. 2. Drink plenty of water the week before your session. This keeps you hydrated and helps with your skin. 3. Make your outfit choices different styles and try them on before the session. Big tip: iron your clothes and put them on hangers!!! 4. Your outfit choice matters from head to toe. Bring footwear that matches your outfit and accessories. 5. Don’t forget to smile - we all love to see you smile! CityLifestyle.com/Westfield

GIVING BACK

M a s k M a ke r s o f We s t f i e l d NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF COMMITTED INDIVIDUALS TO CHANGE THE WORLD. “HELLO, I HAVE A CRAZY REQUEST UNRELATED TO PAINT COLORS...IT’S ABOUT PAINT MASKS!” The message rolled in from an E.R. Doctor. For Marie Crane-Yvon, offering one was simple. Learning how few were available became the challenge. Marie spent days sourcing protection locally, resulting in 31 masks donated to area hospitals and Westfield Firefighters. Heidi Leonard was parallel on the helper journey and posted to Facebook, “Attention Medical Field, do we need to make these masks locally? ...if so we can start a drive.” Marie reached out to Heidi offering help. On March 22, 2020 they launched with a heartfelt, “Can you Sew?”

18

Westfield Lifestyle | June 2020

THE MISSION Mask Makers For Westfield was created with great help from The Westfield Firefighters Union 1111. The very first day, the Broad Street Halloween candy bin was repurposed for a safe drop box for Makers. With direction from former Chief Curt Gezotis and current Chief Patrick Engloff, safety measures for sanitizing and distribution were set in place. While guidelines for effective PPE were changing and supplies were waning, it became clear the cloth masks would become critically important to anyone fighting the COVID-19 crisis. With all effort to keep the city safe, the mission manifested: to support Makers in the Westfield Community with the necessary patterns, materials, and key procedures for donating and delivering to area front line responders. Immediately, the response was overwhelming, Heidi Leonard, Branch Manager at Embrace Home Loans and an avid quilter shared, “We had such an outpouring of requests; on the positive side there were those offering help, the scary side became how many healthcare workers desperately needed masks.” From the hustle of creating a group, fostering connections with area sewers, managing requests and safely sharing supplies, Marie and Heidi hit the ground running and they have not stopped. Kindness and positivity is abundant. Generous monetary donations have taken care of local shipping of wholesale fabric from The Spare Room Quilt Shop to area sewers. Emergency Management and The Department of Public Health actively help distribute masks and Westifeld Policeman Captain McCabe has traveled door to door, safely receiving and delivering the masks of many colors. Local Makers banded together and devoted their time, skill and resourcefulness; they are truly the heart of this mission. MAKER’S STORIES Creating a community on social media has an obvious silver lining: simply knowing we are not alone, and ultimately realizing how many people truly care to make a difference. We can be united by the common threads of life, and we can join together to better understand purpose and struggle. Mask Makers For Westfield honors the good work of the many sewers who showed up to help. Cheryl Denardo is one of them. This is her story. “Hi All, I am a lifelong resident and business owner of

early, but I was fortunate to find “My Calling” by helping and sew all the time and I absolutely love it. As soon as I read that make them all day, every day. So, I am lucky to be able to do something to help others and keep myself busy.” Author’s note: 5/4/20 Cheryl has sewn 648 masks and together MMW has sewn nearly 5,000 for their community. local businesses during the shutdown STEPPING IT UP IN OUR TIME OF NEED ARTICLE DANIELLE BARTON AND CANDICE BERUBE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

WHEN GOVERNOR BAKER ANNOUNCED THAT ALL NON-ESSENTIAL BUSINESSES MUST CLOSE, SHOCK RIPPLED THROUGH MASSACHUSETTS. Some of the most frequently visited businesses in the city were mandated to shut down - salons, spas, fitness centers, retail establishments and restaurants, to name a few. Business owners suddenly found themselves either closed OR they were considered an essential business. As homeowners quarantined at home, most of these local essential stores had to shift the way in which they did business. Many have found a way to make it work, logging long hours to ensure Westfield and Southwick residents’ needs are met. And when the stay-at-home mandate lifts, many of our non-essential businesses will open their doors, once again! We don’t know about you, but we will be first in line to support our local establishments. In the meantime, read on to see how these owners stepped up in our time of need.

A family legacy starting back in 1947, the Puzas are committed to excellence in bringing the best meats, seafood, and deli with great customer service to Westfield. The Butcher Block continues to have a following of incredibly loyal customers who have all become extended family. And, during Westfield’s greatest time of need, it is clear that they have continued to grow that family. 22

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

WANT SOME GREENERY TO ADD A LITTLE BIT OF

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

Why stick with one kind of garden? Once you’re a container garden pro, there are tons of different theme gardens you can create all around your home. Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing all your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables—like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks—that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a window garden for basil, cilantro, dill or thyme. In order to grow larger plants, such as tomatoes, lemons or—yes, even avocados—you’ll need some larger containers, like large pots, baskets or box planters. CONTINUED >

April Showers Bring May Flowers!! Not only will we have beautiful flowers soon, but it might also cause more symptoms for spring allergy sufferers. Rain can promote plant and pollen growth. Wind accompanying a rainfall can stir pollen and mold into the air, also heightening symptoms. Pollen is fine and it can be carried for great distances through the air current. It also is easily inhaled as it comes in contact with your nose, mouth and nasal passages. Taking your allergy medication should be done well before the first sneeze. We recommend you begin treating two weeks before your symptoms typically surface. There isn't a cure for spring allergies, but there is something close. Immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, can modify and prevent disease progression.
