In this issue, we include a letter from Franklin's mayor, Dr. Ken Moore to remind us that there is a light at the end of this very long tunnel if we just follow directions and do our part to contain and keep this virus at bay. Our city government is working hard for all of us. But even if just for a minute, we also want to offer a distraction from the everyday with stories of some fabulous women in this community. Ladies of Franklin, where would we be without you? It is during May that we celebrate mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers. But here at Franklin Lifestyle, we also want to recognize the other women who build our community. Our village has women

#SocialDistancing Part 1 We can still manage to have a good time even while we're social distancing. Keeping kids busy, cul-de-sac parties, and family time are just a few of the things your neighbors are doing!
1. “We went and found an empty state park so we could each paint a nature canvas. Amelia said it was her favorite family activity we have ever done. As soon as we pulled in, it started raining so we found some cardboard to make her a place to sit and we spent 45 minutes painting the scenery around us in the rain.” -- Leah Beth Bartley

GOOD TIMES 1.
#SocialDistancing Part 2 Cleaning projects that you never seem to have had the time to get to are now a big part of social distancing -- closets, garages, pantries and even behind the refrigerator are keeping neighbors busy! Getting outside, taking the dog for a walk and at-home workouts round out the list of social distancing activities.
1. “With a little extra time on my hands, I thought I'd do something I'd been putting off for years - cleaning out the garage. The feeling of accomplishment when all was done was worth the effort.” -- Lisa Konicki

THE SPREAD OF COVID-19 AND THE RESULTING QUARANTINE HAS NOT BEEN EASY ON ANY OF US. The list of hardships when you’re under an extended quarantine are endless - from the emotional to the financial. We asked some of our local neighborhood businesses just how hard the isolation has been on their business and how we can help support them and our local community.
RESTAURANTS Jason McConnell, Owner, Executive Chef, McConnell Hospitality Group (Photo by James Williams Photography) Red Pony Restaurant, Cork & Cow, 55 South (Franklin, Brentwood, Spring Hill), McConnell House, Red Pony Catering, Salty Goat Taqueria McConnellHospitalityGroup.com WHAT IMPACT HAS COVID-19 HAD ON YOUR BUSINESS? This is our first closure with no reopening date planned for the first time in 14 years. This was a tough decision, as we have 300 employees and no idea when this will end. My #1 objective is to get people back to work ASAP. I just want to be responsible about doing that— their physical and financial wellbeing is extremely important to me. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS? Purchase gift cards and definitely plan to come dine with us when we reopen. It’s going to be a party! ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE FUTURE? I think this shut down will put a lot of places out of business permanently. People who can weather the storm might possibly see an increase in their business. I plan to be around to find out.

It has been a very solid response. I have about 20 classes booked for this week both for English and Spanish (English in Peru and Spanish in Franklin). Hannah Shellnut, Director of Marketing, says, “Through this quarterly charity program, over the past 2 years we’ve been able to give back over $55,000.” Last quarter, Shellnut donated to Davis House, which combats child abuse. For April, May, and June, Shellnut will be giving back to Women of Williamson (WOW). This nonprofit stood out to Hannah because of her high school teaching background. She realizes many women are not fortunate and believes it’s important to give young women the chance to further their education despite the hardships in their lives. Women of Williamson established a scholarship for female students living in Williamson County who desire higher education, but need financial support. WOW also helps funding for other scholarships that will allow women to complete their two or four year degree. In addition, Women of Williamson supports Bridges Domestic Violence Center, End Slavery Tennessee, and breast cancer awareness. Many of the charities the Shellnut family is involved with empower and support women and children. Eric Shellnut is on the Board of Directors for My Friend’s House (MFH) which focuses on turning youth with bad behavior into responsible life learners. Gavin Shellnut is on the Young Professionals Board for A Vintage Affair. This nonprofit hosts wine-related events that raise money and awareness for women and children in the most dire need in Williamson County. Over the last 20 years, they’ve been able to give over $2 million to their beneficiaries. Shellnut Insurance enjoys participating as a team at the annual Grape Stomp event in the fall. Hannah Shellnut is on the dinner committee for GraceWorks Ministries’ annual benefit dinner. This year marks their 25th birthday so they’re going above and beyond to celebrate. Their four main program areas are Family Support, Instructional Programs, Seasonal Needs, and Hunger Prevention (F.I.S.H.). The Shellnut family is often seen working at their food pantry. This food pantry has fed 10,000 unduplicated individuals and was recently named the healthiest in Middle Tennessee. Another reason they love this nonprofit is because of its fuel bag program for students. Every Friday, 700 kids go home with a bag of nutritional groceries to last the weekend. Giving back is part of the Shellnut family’s livelihood. Their volunteer efforts and quarterly charity program have contributed in building the respectable agency they are today. They’re excited to see how they can help Women of Williamson in the upcoming months. It’s their business to know how to prepare for the unknown and now more than ever the community can look to them for guidance. CityLifestyle.com/Franklin

MAKING S PA C E
RENOVATE & REFINE
FOR YOU
IN A RECENT ARTICLE FROM REFINERY 29 ENTITLED “WHY HOME CARE IS THE NEW SELF-CARE IN 2020,” WRITER CAIT MUNRO EXPLORES THE IDEA OF THE “CURATION OF ONE’S SPACE AS A FORM OF SELF-CARE.” She references Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Natalia Amari, who poses the following questions: What in your physieven more supportive to you? After a stressful day of work, meeting other’s needs, and the general hustle and bustle of life, having a space to rewind is an effective way to care for oneself. Jessica Wilkerson, the Principal Interior Designer at O.P. Jenkins Furniture & Design, tells us about a self-care space that designer, Patricia Robbins, completed in 2019. Wilkerson shares that the goal of this project was to be a “feminine, airy retreat.” She says that textures like the custom velvet window treatments and matching velvet pattern accent pillows are what make the room. Robbins also used a white sateen bedding and a decorative tape on the bench and windows to add more dimension to the bedroom. This was all inspired by a gray, sateen ribbon that the client had shared with the design team. Wilkerson shares that Robbins brought the soft feel and muted color of the ribbon to life. This room also has an attached master bath that shares the soft and airy design elements of the bedroom. They wanted the same feminine lines to continue from bed to bath. This continuity of materials and details is Wilkerson’s favorite element of the design. She says that the repetition “is soothing and creates a serene, relaxing space.” 26

While at Auburn, I shadowed Auburn's team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. James Andrews who encouraged me to consider treating the smaller bones of the hands or feet. I chose feet! Q: MY FIRST YEAR WAS... S P E C I A LT Y. . . D E N T I S T R Y Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR FIELD OF SPECIALTY? When I was 15 years old, I decided I wanted to be a dentist and never looked back. I knew I wanted to be in medicine but, also to use my creativity and gentle nature simultaneously. Dentistry provided the opportunity to do all three. It also gave me the flexibility to have a good work life balance and raise a family. Q: MY FIRST YEAR WAS... My first year in dentistry was very challenging. Making decisions that have real-life consequences is very stressful for a 25-year-old first-year dentist. I had to learn to trust my education and experience, while using my intuition to guide patient care decisions. Q: WHAT’S THE BEST CAREER ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? A mentor of mine once told me that if I treated my patients like they were family that everything else would fall into place. Every time I’m challenged with a tough decision, I always fall back on that guidance and it has not failed me yet. Q: WHAT IS YOUR HOBBY OR INDULGENCE OF CHOICE? I have loved and practiced music my entire life. It soothes my soul and breathes joy into my day. I am a vocalist and classical violinist. Although, my newest indulgence is my three month old daughter, Grace. Family is and always will be my top priority.

DR. JILL FICHTEL, MD TRANSFORMATIVE DERMATOLOGY
S P E C I A LT Y. . . D E R M AT O L O G Y Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR FIELD OF SPECIALTY? My personal struggle with acne played a huge role in my choosing dermatology. I painfully recall not wanting to leave the house as a teenager because of acne, which taught me that many times the psychological impact of a skin problem, due to the visible nature, is more disturbing than the actual physical exam warrants. This impacted my treatment approach with the goal for perfection in every patient no matter how severe or mild a disease may outwardly appear. Q: MY FIRST YEAR WAS…. The most emotionally and physically challenging, yet spiritually beautiful year of my life. It was my intern year at Baptist Hospital (Nashville) in Internal Medicine, prior to my dermatology training. This was a life or death gig and being a sensitive person, shedding the pain and hurt at the end of each day was difficult for me, and sleep deprivation was a continuous state. On the flip side, witnessing and experiencing daily miracles of healing, hope, peace and love made it all worthwhile. Q: WHAT’S THE BEST CAREER ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? From my dad, John N. Crowell, now deceased 20 years, but I still hear his words clear as day spoken to me around age 10. 1. “Don’t rely on anyone to take care of you. The only person who can do that is you.” 2. “Do something you love.” 3. “It better be good because you #!*$ at cooking and cleaning!” He was correct on all three. This taught me the importance of becoming reliant on my faith and God more than myself. Q: WHAT IS YOUR HOBBY OR INDULGENCE OF CHOICE? I crave being out in nature, especially anywhere that’s sunny, warm, and has a body of water. I love to swim, how the water feels on my skin, how it supports me while I float, how it silences the world as I go under, how the ripples expand so perfectly from a skipped rock, and the sound of gentle waves. After dermatology, my second career choice was mermaid… maybe in retirement!

S P E C I A LT Y. . . F A C I A L P L A S T I C S U R G E R Y Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR FIELD OF SPECIALTY? I come from a family of physicians. From a young age I was always a spatially and visually oriented person and greatly enjoyed working with my hands. My father was a psychiatrist so I also was attuned to the importance of emotional well-being. Facial plastic surgery allows me to combine both of those passions. Q: MY FIRST YEAR WAS... As a surgical intern in Boston, I often worked over 100 hours/week. My sister was living with me after we graduated from University of Michigan. I was so tired after a long call shift, she would sometimes find me asleep in the tub with the shower running over me. It was exciting to be a new surgeon in a city like Boston. Q: WHAT’S THE BEST CAREER ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? I can’t think of specific career advice that I have received. I had incredible mentors throughout my journey who made me believe that I could achieve anything. I had no female surgeon mentors since they were so scarce. My advice to young women in my field is to center their career around their life instead of their life around their career. Q: WHAT IS YOUR HOBBY OR INDULGENCE OF CHOICE? I love to travel. My Dad loved to take us all over the world to experience the beauty of other cultures. My Mom was a nomad and citizen of the world. I took my son to Ireland two years ago when he was five and he has got the bug. He is obsessed with maps and learning about other cultures and places.

WITH RANDY THOMPSON FROM FRANKLIN'S HOUSE OF BREAD
in Franklin still had livestock in their yards and you could pull over almost anywhere and buy fresh eggs.” Fast forward to five years ago when Thompson switched from engineering to baking. “During my Bible studies one morning, I plainly heard a voice tell me: “I want you to learn how to make bread.” So I ordered a bunch of books to read online. I had never made bread in my life. The books made no sense to me. But I busily mixed and baked and burnt loaf after loaf of really bad bread. My garbage can was full every week of really ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
awful bread. And just when I was ready to ditch the whole thing, a loaf turned out both beautiful and delicious. I was hooked, but still I burnt a lot of bread. The pastor at my church heard what I was doing and urged me to make the church’s Communion Bread, so that gave me a good incentive to keep going and trying different things. Then I heard that the church staff were eager to get the leftover bread, and then family and friends started asking for it, so I was gradually becoming a baker. It was an overnight success that was 5 years in the making.” Today, Franklin House of Bread is merging with Franklin Bakehouse with Randy being the Master Baker. “We will be right on the corner in the bottom floor of the new Harpeth Square Apartments. Hopefully, up and running by the end of May. I’m very RANDY

SIMPL E S ANDWICH BRE AD Dough Starter (Sponge): minimum 1 hour, maximum 24 hours Baking Time: 50 minutes
Minimum Rising Time: about 4 hours
Oven Temperature: 350°F
Makes: two 8-by-4-by-4 1/2-inch-high loaves
SPONGE INGREDIENTS + All-Purpose Flour or Bread Flour 2 1/4 cups + 2 1/2 tbsp + Water, Room Temperature 1 3/4 cups FINAL DOUGH INGREDIENTS + All-Purpose Flour or Bread Flour 2 cups + 3 tbsps + Dry Milk Powder 1/4 cup + Instant Yeast 3/4 tsp + Salt 1/3 tsp + Butter, Softened 9 tbsps
SPONGE DIRECTIONS Mix Sponge together for about 2 minutes, place in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap, then let ferment for anywhere from 1-24 hours. FINAL DOUGH DIRECTIONS Place mixed final dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let ferment for 1-4 hours at room temperature. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured counter and cut in half. Form the dough into two small logs. Grease up baking pans and place dough inside. Dough should be about 1/2 inch from top of loaf pan. Cover with oiled plastic wrap to keep from drying out. Preheat oven to 350°. When dough has risen about 1-inch above the sides of the pan, it’s ready to bake. Rising time may take up to 90 minutes. Bake for about 50 minutes (turn the pan around about halfway through) until a cake tester comes out clean, or an instant read thermometer reads about 210°. Remove loaf pan from oven and brush with butter if you want. As soon as loaf pan has cooled enough (5 minutes or so) unmold the loaf and let it rest on a wire rack until it is barely warm. This will take about an hour, but it is crucial for the interior of the loaf to set and not be gummy. It’s also crucial for air to circulate around the loaf, especially the bottom to avoid the bottom getting soggy. If you don’t have a wire rack, improvise with three or four butter knives on a cutting board. Place loaf on top and let cool. Slice with a bread knife and enjoy. When you toast it, set your toaster and about 50% to avoid burning. You can always keep toasting it a little more to get it just right. After slicing just store bread in a gallon ZipLoc bag. Should stay fresh for about a week, if it lasts that long.
+ T ip: This is my favorite bread for banana sandwiches which are not toasted. A slight toast allows the bread to hold up to a roast beef or fish sandwich.

MELISSA SCHLEICHER SUCCESS IN SHADES AND STYLES CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST SHOWS ENTREPRENEURS, FEMALE BUSINESS OWNERS TO LIVE DREAMS
THE TALE OF A PRETTY CHEERLEADER THAT DROPPED OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL, GOT PREGNANT, MARRIED AT 19, AND HAD HER FIRST, AND ONLY CHILD AT 20 ISN’T JUST AN IDEA FOR A COUNTRY SONG. What makes this story unique is the success of entrepreneur and celebrity hairstylist Melissa Schleicher. This petite and bubbly blonde with a personality larger than her hair is Nashville born and bred. She had a typical middle-income childhood growing up. As a child she would practice cutting and styling hair on her Barbie dolls. “I knew at an early age what I wanted in life, so I decided to enroll in beauty school without my high school diploma, said Melissa. My parents didn’t even know I had quit attending school for a while.” “For many years, I was embarrassed that I didn’t complete high school. It was my daughter Hunter, who provided the encouragement I needed to come clean,” said Melissa. “Mom, it’s your story, and you’re a huge success, so tell it,” was her daughter’s advice. Like any young person beginning a career, Melissa took whatever work came her way, which tended to be more colors than cuts. “I hated coloring hair at first.” confessed Melissa. “But that was how you made good money.” Her determination started paying dividends. “When I received my first full paycheck, the amount was more than my dad was making for the same period. My dream was taking shape.” CUTS & COLOR WERE ONLY THE BEGINNING Melissa’s initial success only motivated her to explore new opportunities. She met Melanie Shelley, an experienced hair and makeup artist for several country music stars such as Leigh Ann Womack, The Dixie Chicks, and Alan Jackson.

body contouring SMOOTHING AND SHAPING TREATMENTS FOR YOUR BEST YOU
FRANKLIN SKIN AND LASER HAS THE NEWEST, MOST ADVANCED BODY CONTOURING TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE – COOLSCULPTING®,
COOLTONE™,
AND
EXILLIS®. With summer around the corner, this unique facility has the tools patients need to look great. Board certified surgeon Dr. Steven Bengelsdorf ensures his patients will have the best treatment in the safest and most comfortable environment. “In the past, we had to resort to invasive surgical
procedures
such
as
liposuction
or abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) to shape the body,” says Dr. Bengelsdorf. “Now, with these new technologies, for many people, we don’t.” “Body contouring procedures are intended for people already living a healthy lifestyle, but are frustrated with stubborn areas that don’t improve no matter how much they diet and exercise,” explains Dr. Bengelsdorf. “These are the patients that usually obtain the best results.” There are three non-invasive procedures that help get patients the body they desire, CoolSculpting®, CoolTone™ and Exillis®.

CoolSculpting® is a form of cryolipolysis that causes a frostbite-like injury to fat cells while protecting the skin. The fat cells then die slowly over a couple of months. This gives the skin time to contract while the fat is eliminated from the body. Dr. Bengelsdorf says, “We are also one of a few practices that can offer DualSculpting, that is, we can use two machines at the same time to decrease total procedure time by 50%. This allows patients to get more areas done in a shorter period of time.” Franklin Skin and Laser was the first practice in Williamson County to offer CoolSculpting®, and now they are the practice that does the most CoolSculpting® procedures in Middle Tennessee. Their results were so impressive that they were chosen to be one of the first locations nationwide to offer CoolTone™. CoolTone™ is a Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (MMS) device that tones and conditions muscle in a way you can’t do yourself. As opposed to Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), which can cause burns and skin irritation, after a CoolTone™ treatment, patients may notice some normal muscle soreness as if they just worked out. It works best in a series of four treatments and results can be seen in as little as two weeks. “Removing fat isn’t enough, bodies need muscle, too,” says Dr. Bengelsdorf. “The combination of CoolSculpting® and CoolTone™ is synergistic. The more body muscle you have, the quicker you burn fat.” These technologies work so well that the need can occasionally arise for skin tightening, and that’s where the final technology excels. Exilis Ultra 360® is a monopolar radiofrequency device that non-invasively tightens loose skin. Whether due to weight loss, pregnancy, or aging, loose skin can be unflattering. Exillis® in effect “shrink wraps” your skin. Skin tightening can often be achieved in approximately four to six treatments. All of these procedures work even better when used in conjunction with one another. They are non-invasive, and have little to no downtime. Dr. Bengelsdorf or a member of his team will first perform a thorough medical consultation, and then create a customized treatment plan for each individual to maximize results. Franklin Skin and Laser is a modern, physician-run medical practice with the newest and most technologically advanced body contouring devices that can help patients achieve their dream bodies. PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN
IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since
they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a win-

H APPY M OT H E R ' S DAY! WHAT THREE LOCAL MOMS REALLY WANT THIS YEAR
FOR MOST MOMS, MOTHER’S DAY IS JUST ANOTHER DAY ON THE CALENDAR. It’s not like they can throw up their hands and truly take the whole day off. While it is fun to receive gifts or goodies from their kids and partners, its much less about the gift and more about the sentiment behind it. And as the kids grow and change, so does what mom wants for her day. These three Franklin moms confess what they really want this Mother’s Day.
