a few minutes to view some of the local business and personalities for this month. What is this new normal I keep hearing people talk about? I know I, for one, am not yet sure what that means, but taking a few minutes to feel good about ourselves certainly helps in these trying times. Ultimately I think that is what fashion does: whether it is decorating your home, buying new shoes or finding that one suit or dress, looking good and being fashionable allows us to feel good as we make an impression on those around us. Our community has some great local shops where you can find everything from great art, shoes, hair products and makeup, to the finest in men's and women's clothing. Before you know it, it is going to be sweater weather, so enjoy it while we can. Stay fashionable and buy local. Our community appreciates your patronage! Cheers,

GOOD TIMES

The Village Players continued entertaining and bringing laughter despite shutdown

As serious as the pandemic was, past president Eileen White said she always thought it was The Village Players' mission to entertain and bring laughter to Birmingham and surrounding areas, specifically during their "brief intermission." "The one thing that we had going for us during the shutdown was our marquee," she said about the pictured puns of plays and musicals.

Birmingham Life | September 2020

“OUR JOB IS TO HELP OUR CLIENTS FIND AND CUSTOMIZE UNIQUE PIECES THAT TRULY REFLECT THEIR GOOD TASTE AND FIT INTO THEIR LIFE ST YLE .” FAMILY-OWNED AND OPERATED SINCE 1990, BIRMINGHAM DESIGN STUDIO IS CELEBRATING ITS 30TH YEAR IN BUSINESS. With the finest selection of exceptional quality luxury custom designer furniture, top-of-the-line Persian and oriental rugs, custom-made window treatments, custom draperies, beautiful oil paintings, high-end accessories and home decor, as well as a full-service interior design studio, Birmingham Design Studio is truly a complete, one-stop design center– right in your neighborhood. Located at 808 South Old Woodward Avenue, Birmingham Design Studio’s artfully-curated showroom includes an exclusive collection of continuously-evolving premium pieces from luxury furniture suppliers like Hickory Chair, Hancock and Moore, Pearson, Theodore Alexander and many more. While all the furnishings on display are available for immediate purchase, this is only a small sampling of the countless styles, fabrics and finishes the Birmingham Design Studio team has access to; in fact, they travel the world to handpick unique luxury furniture, oriental rugs and fine art that one simply will not find at big box furniture stores or national retailers, allowing customers to have a one-of-akind look at their homes. “We don’t fill our showroom with the intention of only selling off the floor,” Birmingham Design Studio President Kamran Karimpour explained. “We are not in the business of ‘selling’ anything. Our job is to help our clients find and customize unique pieces that truly reflect their good taste and fit into their lifestyle. While our floor items are available for sale, the real purpose of the showroom is to convey the quality of our pieces while allowing our clientele to actually see finishes and frames in-person.” Because Birmingham Design Studio specializes in custom furnishings, their choices of styles are far more than any store can show on their floor. They are also not limited by the choices of fabrics that each brand may offer. As a result, they carry all the major fabric and leather brands and can pair them with any piece of upholstery based on what works best for clients. In addition to furnishing offerings, Birmingham Design Studio is also known for its in-house design team who can help clients as much or as little as they want. Karimpour’s wife, Kristi, and her expert design staff believe that the beauty of interior design is found in the personal connection between an individual and the

home they live in; with this in mind, they set out every day to empower clients versus pressuring or imposing upon them their own tastes. “There is no one definition of beauty when it comes to interior design,” Karimpour said. “No two people are alike– and their homes should be as unique as they are. The true art is to have the interiors truly reflect what’s special about each client. It’s our client’s home, and it must have their signature style all over it. Our job is to share our expertise and guide them in making the right choices. We design with them, for them and within their budget.” After listening and learning about a client’s needs, wants, lifestyles and design visions, the team uses that information to create a floor plan and find furniture styles and fabrics that would fulfill those wishes. Karimpour said it takes a lot of homework and going back and forth to find just the right pieces, but once a plan is put together and

presented to a client, it is up to them on how quickly or slowly to move forward, ensuring that the end result would be the beautiful rooms they were envisioning regardless. Karimpour always had a passion for beautiful hand-knotted rugs and wanted to share it with people who appreciated this woven art. In 1990, he opened his first store in Birmingham called Woven Treasures Oriental Rugs, and many of the clients there started their projects

She has been shooting professionally for over 10 years. “It is imperative to make people feel comfortable in front of the camera and feel good about themselves,” McCaffery said. “I believe in having a rapport with your clients. People always come first, lighting next and then camera settings.” Headshots are one of McCaffery’s specialties, which she said are essential to portray a proper image of one’s company as they help “humanize” it. McCaffery said it is important to think about what message you want to tell and dress to match. For example, creatives may prefer something more casual if what they do can be messy, like pottery. On the other half of the spectrum, lawyers might want to wear a suit to show how they represent their clients and how determined they are. “Trust your photographer,” she advised. “Sometimes you will be pushing your chin out or stretching towards the camera. Sometimes it can feel odd, or it can feel like ‘Simon Says.’ Move past that. Send your thoughts into the camera. People respond best when you look at them directly in the eyes, so look directly into the lens.” She also recommended that people remain classic when it comes to wardrobe choices. When shooting a headshot, you want it to last for two years. “Nothing will date your photograph faster than a look that was popular for one season only,” McCaffery said. “If you wear makeup, make

Professional headshots give

potential clients confidence in contacting you about their business. They reassure clients that there is a real person behind the website or business card that was passed to them. of a mirror. I am serious! You have to give an emotion to the camera for it to show in your look. Sometimes a CEO or board member may feel a neutral or serious expression will show lead-

LOCAL MASTER PORTRAIT ARTIST MARLA MICHELE MUST HAS HAD A CAMERA IN HER HAND SINCE SHE WAS VERY YOUNG. As a Birmingham resident, she thought it would be fun to portray her charming “walkable city” as a “danceable city.” Must moved to Birmingham 10 years ago to not only be closer to The Roeper School where her son, Jake, attended school but to give her daughters, Ava Rose and Sasha Jade, the opportunity to be in the Birmingham Public School district. “I enjoy city life and seeing people outside walking all the time,” Must said about Birmingham. “I love the location and proximity to everything. I can jump onto Woodward to head down to Detroit or the freeways. It’s fun to be close to the shopping district.” CONTINUED >

We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac has proven to be not only one of rock’s greatest drummers but also an astute discoverer of great talent, pursuing other projects– like photography– with the same energy, drive and passion he puts into his drumming. In fact, Fleetwood has been known to observe his subject, most commonly in nature, for days to capture that “magic moment.” “I have always been fascinated by the intricate structure and design found in nature, and my photography intends to unveil this invisible and orderly world that sometimes goes unnoticed,” Fleetwood said to Marti. When he’s not on tour, Mick lives in Maui with his family. If he’s not playing golf with friends or rehearsing with fellow musicians, he likes to go around the island and take photos, specifically of flowers, landscapes and butterflies, which Fleetwood has dubbed “flying flowers.” Fleetwood’s limited edition signed and numbered “Butterfly Collection,” among others, is available for purchase at Robert Kidd Gallery, which is located at 107 Townsend St. in Birmingham.
