Are You Ready Yet? IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE THAT I WRITE AND STAND WITH THE BOULDER COMMUNITY IN SOLIDARITY THAT THE TIME HAS COME TO HAVE A REAL CONVERSATION ABOUT RACISM IN AMERICA AND IN OUR COMMUNITY. We’ve all seen the images and heard the voices of the protesters' outrage against the ongoing systemic racism and police brutality in the Black community. Let’s meet this moment as a community and rise up united in this fight to help transform culturally on what has been a huge failure for decades. How do we do that as a community? We face the ugly truth that racism exists! When we own that truth we then start to listen to one another. When having a conversation about racial injustice many people listen only to formulate a reply, rather than listen to understand, which I think is one of the many obstacles people of color face in this country. When speaking truth about this phenomenon the message has either been misinterpreted or not heard until now. If we understand this method of listening then we start to educate ourselves on living better lives towards equality for all. From my own personal experience, I have tried to lead the conversation on race with under-

people in this country who happen to be black or brown. We need the community to first share in feeling our daily discomfort and fear and only then can we collectively progress. I am proud to be in a community that is willing and ready to tackle these issues. Black people are no different than white people — we only want equality and the same fair treatment as whites. I want my kids to be able to reach the same endless possibilities as your kids. Yes, they have lived a privileged life so far, but once they leave the nest the world is a very different place to brown and black folks. So let's meet this moment with having the conversations, educating ourselves, and listening because Black Lives Matter!

BRET ALEXANDRA KNOWS THE POWER OF ‘HOME’ AS A SPACE BEAUTIFIER AND HOME STAGER. The Colorado native, born right outside Denver, has watched the city grow in more ways than one. Being a part of the creative and artistic community has inspired Alexandra to grow with the city and put Denver on the map for fashion and design.

As a Design Manager for Guest House, she’s been able to lean into her desire to aid positivity and mental health through design. “It took me a long time to find 'my place' in the world and contribute in a way that felt authentic for me. I've always been an incredibly positive person who also struggles with mental health daily,” she says. “I've been able to create a space that is a safe haven that allows me to be myself, learn myself, and understand myself. I think everyone needs to have a place like this, a place that is home to them no matter what.” The Denver design industry is charged by women and to be a Black woman in this realm is a revolutionary act. She says, “The Black presence in design is slim. I have made it a point to make a name for myself and Black women. Being a Black woman in the design space means making sure you aren't the only one there and not letting the 'status quo' determine my style.” Because Alexandra stands for inclusivity, intentional design and the belief that the world needs every single one of us, her view of the world has shaped her design choices lately. First, with COVID and then with George Floyd lighting up the world, she affirms that nothing else matters to her right now until justice is served for George Floyd and for all Black people who have been discriminated against all over the world. She wants people to never forget the energy that is being created around the world right now in the name of justice. “Never forget that all Black lives matter all the time—not just while it's a news headline,” she says. The state of the world has inspired the space beautifier to push the envelope and bring more diverse voices and artists to the table to contribute to her design work across the board. Recently, she took on styling The Mother House in Denver—a home in a category of its own.

H O M E If Bret Alexandra were a home, it would be the home she staged on Maxwell Avenue in Boulder. She filled the small boho bungalow with soft tones, a myriad of textures, and cozy layers. See Bret’s work here: @thefourthhouse @guesthouseshop

PIÑLLAMA

+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

PARTING THOUGHTS

Good news for fans of street art and larger- than-life murals: Unlike just about every thing else this summer, CRUSH Walls isn't canceled. The vibrant street art festival that paints RiNo red (and blue, and lavender, and, well, every other color) each year, will still be spraying September1 4-20, albeit a little differently.

“Instead of doing events where we have big groups of people coming together, we’re having to refocus and make sure the artists feel safe and that anyone who’s coming out and walking the streets is also safe,” says Festival Founder Robin Munro (aka Dread). That means more of an online experience, with livestreams of the 80-plus artists working their magic on RiNo walls. Here are two teams of artists you won’t want to miss.
