As the school year begins, read about the last of the summer activities for our kids looking to excel in their studies, arts, and music. Next month don’t miss our September issue highlighting back-to-school activities. The warm summer months are not just about another day on the river or escapes to the mountains. Every week we get to spend time with family at one of the local farmers markets. Fresh food, produce, and locally made products are not just about convenience, it is how to support farmers, as well as the youth vendors of the Meridian Main Street Farmer’s Market. And finally, as we all happily focus on getting back on track with a routine of professional hair and body care, I am pleased to feature several salon professionals and

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT OFFERS WATER TIPS As we head into the last months of summer, the Meridian Public Works Department offered these tips for being water wise outside.

+ DO select plants appropriate for Meridian's climate. + DO group your plants based on their watering needs to avoid over- or underwatering. + DO place mulch around your plants. This will reduce evaporation. + DO be conscious of when you water. Early in the morning or late at night are the best times to avoid excessive evaporation. + DON'T spray off your driveway or patio with a hose. Instead, sweep it with a broom. + DON'T let your hose sit in water. This can cause backflow issues. By following these tips, you'll help conserve water and could see some savings on your next water bill.

MERIDIAN MAIN STREET FARMER’S MARKET ENCOURAGING YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS...TO LEARN HOW TO SELL, AND TO CREATE AND MANAGE MONEY, MANAGE THEIR PRODUCT AND LEARN CUSTOMER SERVICE ARTICLE KRISTEN LARSON PHOTOGRAPHY CHEREE EVELAND

SUMMER IN THE TREASURE VALLEY IS ALL ABOUT THE OUTDOORS. The panoramic views that stretch between Boise and Meridian depict a vast sweep of high desert foothills beckoning the intrepid outdoor enthusiast to venture out and brave the blazing sun. Closer in town Cottonwood dander lazily blankets the banks of the Boise River inviting those who seek a cooler and shadier version of the summer tableau, while providing a very necessary sanctuary from the summer heat. Treasure Valley summers are a much-anticipated season of rafting, fishing, floating, or hiking or biking, a time to take advantage of mountain getaways and opportunities to get pleasantly lost in the woods. But the warmer months are not just about another day on the river or escapes to the mountains. There is another big piece of the Treasure Valley traditional summer schedule that is equally revered; spending time with the family at one of the many local farmer’s markets. 12

Meridian Lifestyle | August 2020

Despite encroaching subdivisions, freeways, and modern conveniences, Idaho still maintains its strong agrarian roots and part of celebrating Idaho’s farming culture is the ability to interact, face to face, with one of its many small and local farmers. Fresh food and produce, locally grown and sourced, is not just about convenience, it is a way to support a vital part of the community and in turn, benefit from eating the most nutritious and readily available food source. Meridian Main Street Farmer’s Market manager, CheRee Eveland, has advocated for the idea of keeping food and products locally -sourced and most importantly, an integral part of local Idaho culture. How is she ensuring that farmers and local vendors stay active in the community? Easy – it’s all about the youth. Says Eveland, “This is our third year. It was actually started five years ago by Merdian Mayor Tammy de Weerd when she created a youth farmer’s market – but it didn’t quite take off. So they sent a bid proposal out and my company won it and I’ve been running it for the last three years. The nice thing about our market is that we still have youth vendors.”

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED) Each year Idaho loses more of its valuable farmland to developments. According to a Boise State University study if current rates continue, 200,000 acres of farm and ranch land will disappear from the Treasure Valley by 2100. And with it, will be the loss of this intimate relationship between ourselves and the earth as our food source and supplier. One way to counter this is to involve our youngest citizens. Says Eveland, “We encourage youth entrepreneurs, what it’s like to have a booth, to learn how to sell, and to create and manage money, manage their product, learn customer service, learn paperwork, and budget.” For those would-be budding farmers and young entrepreneurs who are interested in becoming involved with the Meridian Main Street Market, Eveland has some great advice and encouragement. Says Eveland, “They can go to our website or our Facebook page. Both of them have links to fill out the applications. And really that is for anyone who would like to have a booth.” Due to the current Covid crisis, many local vendors and small business owners have felt the brunt of the unstable economy, resulting in smaller numbers of vendors. But decreasing numbers have not lessened the vitality of the downtown market and its commitment to the local economy. Eveland explains, “I follow the health and safety measures that the city required for the first few weeks until we hit the appropriate phase. We do not have any requirements any longer. It is an openair market. Though we do not require masks, if people feel more comfortable wearing a mask outside, then that is their choice.” And though Eveland and her vendors are weathering through a bit of the unknown with this summer season, it has not dampened any of her future plans for the market. Says Eveland, “We have plans to grow. We would love to see it get bigger and continue to support the community, especially with the youth vendors. We also tend to choose smaller, lesser known vendors, as a way to help them out.” Part of this community involvement includes local musicians and bands in addition to food and produce vendors. Another great source of community has been involving the local food truck scene. Says Eveland, “We are looking to get food trucks out as they have also been struggling.” Looking for a way to support our local businesses? Spend a Saturday morning along Main Street in downtown Meridian. Shop, eat, and leisurely peruse uniquely local items and wares. Local businesses support our communities. And building strong communities is reliant upon our consumer spending choices. Choosing local farmers and vendors helps strengthen that spirit of community. Choose fresh. Choose healthy. Choose local. For more information on location, hours, applications, and events, go to https://meridianmainstreetmarket.com/ 14

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED) LITERATURE BASED If keeping the kids at home is your number one priority, the Meridian Library District has plenty of online programs for children. Every Tuesday from 10 to 10:30 a.m. the library will host Preschool story time via Zoom. The story time introduces preschoolers to both early literacy and precoding skills. On Thursdays,

“ENRICHING LIVES, IGNITING CURIOSITY, AND CULTIVATING CONNECTIONS.”

the library will host “Wondertime Online.” Also taking place from 10 to 10:30 a.m., “Wondertime Online” is hosted by librarian Travis Porter and allows children to do an activity, listen to music and of course do some reading. The Cabin, a center for readers and writers, plans to host its “Picture This” for children in third to sixth grade. The camps will take place from August 3 to the 7. It lasts from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The camp will explore the power of connecting words and images. The camp is $147 for Cabin members and $177 for nonmembers. MUSIC AND ART BASED Let your kiddos find their inner rockstar at Rock Camp. Hosted by the Boise Rock School, this camp allows the students to practice their instrument and form a band with other campers. The Boise Rock School notes that although it’s called “Rock” camp, the camps are based on whatever genre or type of music the students are interested in. The camp is open to students ages 6-18 at any skill level. The camp has a $150 sign-up fee. The camp is available August 3 through the 7 and August 10 through the 14, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Meridian Art Center will present online art classes for children from ages 6 to ten. On August 4 and 6 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. children ages 6 to 10 can explore unique desert landscapes. This skill-based class requires a watercolor palette, watercolor paper, two brushes, painter’s tape and a black fine point pen. Children ages 11-14 can get in on the fun with a typography class on August 4 and 6 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The class goes over the fundamentals of typography and requires a pencil, eraser, washable markers or sharpies and a fine point black pen. Both courses charge a $20 sign-up fee. 20

Building hope and homes in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho

Hayden’s mother, Virginia, did more than help found our company: she found the spirit of generosity in everyone she met. She knew a shoulder to lean on was stronger than any 2x4. And that leading by example was the greatest gift of all. For 30 years, we’ve partnered with nonprofits, provided the dream of homeownership to deserving families, and empowered every team member to be the next generation of givers. We call it GIVE AS YOU GO. It turns out Virginia was right. The more we give, the more grateful we are.

fact, researchers measured the neural activity in the dogs’ caudate nuclei, a section of the brain dubbed “the neural basis of romantic love.” The caudate area was activated more by the owners’ scents than anybody else’s, even that of the dogs’ handlers. Dogs don’t just recognize their owners; they love them. And we so love our dogs. Here are a few Treasure Valley dogs (and their humans) enjoying their families and the outdoors.

GRILLED FLANK

STEAK

BARBECUE IS A GREAT INSTITUTION WHERE COMMUNAL COOKING AND SHARING OF FOOD, STORIES AND TIME BRINGS FAMILY TOGETHER. Barbecue is synonymous with summer. Everyone looks forward to a sizzling show, great meats, salads and conversation all summer long. Are you struggling with where to start on your staycation BBQ adventure? We all know the basics to good grilling: Seafood, Steak, Brisket & maybe even a veggie sausage if you’re feeling adventurous. How can you step that up and impress your family? There’s nothing better than a steak that’s cooked on the grill – the smoky flavor just can’t be beat! This grilled flank steak by Sara Welch is flavored with a simple marinade, and takes just minutes to put together. It’s a great way to feed a crowd.

6 Servings Prep Time: 5 min Marinating Time: 1 hour Cook Time: 15 min Total Time: 1 hour 20 min

INGREDIENTS + 1/3 cup soy sauce low sodium is ok + 2 teaspoons dried + 1/4 cup lemon juice Italian seasoning + 1 teaspoon black pepper fresh squeezed + 1/2 cup olive oil + 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt + 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce + 1/2 teaspoon onion powder + 2 teaspoons minced garlic + 2 pounds flank steak

DIRECTIONS This recipe starts with a marinade which is a blend of soy sauce, olive oil, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, Italian seasoning and spices. Mix everything together in either a bowl or a gallon-sized freezer bag. Add your flank steak, then give it at least one hour to soak up all that great flavor. Remove the steak from the marinade, then grill it to your desired level of doneness. Let the steak rest for 5 minutes, then slice and serve.

+ This marinade can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days, so it’s great to make in advance. The olive oil may solidify when chilled, so leave the marinade at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before you add the steak. You can even freeze your marinade for up to 2 months if need be!

+ Feel free to use a low sodium soy sauce if you’re watching your salt intake. + Italian seasoning is a blend of dried herbs that can be found in the spice aisle of most grocery stores. This seasoning is typically a blend of dried basil, parsley, garlic and oregano. If you can’t find Italian seasoning, you can blend together your own dried herbs in equal amounts.

+ Be sure to slice your meat against the grain for the most tender bites of steak. CityLifestyle.com/Meridian
