ships, the symbolism of a fresh start in January gives many of us a tangible starting line for tackling our ambitions. Treading water in the sea of our own goals, January can give us a little something to hold on to. "Just start, already!" this month seems to say. Of course, starting may be the easiest part. We know well that sticking to our plans long-term is another feat entirely. In one of my favorite books of the past decade, “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance,” the author, psychologist, and MacArthur Fellow Angela Duckworth asserts: “Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare.” If this seems discouraging, take heart—because she also writes: “When you keep searching

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

B r e at h e E asy, Sleep Well ARTICLE DR. JOHN MURRAY

DO YOU SNORE? Do you hold your breath while you sleep? Do you wake up gasping for air? Do you feel sleepy during the day? These questions may determine whether you might suffer from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is the stoppage of breathing while you sleep. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the stoppage of breathing due to blockage in the airway, essentially choking on yourself in your sleep. It is estimated that some 87 million Americans—18 percent of men and eight percent of women aged 30 to 70—suffer from some form of OSA. Surprisingly, only 10 percent have been diagnosed. In addition to snoring, more serious symptoms include but are not limited to high blood pressure, obesity or weight gain, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), memory problems including Alzheimer’s, heart problems, sexual dysfunction, diabetes, frequent nighttime urination, teeth grinding, and migraines. Just because you have one or more of these symptoms does not mean you have sleep apnea and vice versa; there is, however, a strong correlation between one’s sleep and overall health. For example, with sleep apnea the risk of stroke or heart attack is 33.3 times greater. Risk of hypertension increases by 45 percent. So how do professionals diagnose sleep apnea, and why should we care? Sleep apnea can only be diagnosed by a board-certified sleep physician, but this can be accomplished by a fairly simple at-home sleep

this occurs, it interrupts your sleep. You likely will not remember these events but your body and especially your mind will feel it in the morning. Your body needs proper sleep to let your brain rest and rejuvenate. If you are waking up 10, 20, or 30 times per hour in severe cases it will

affect your health and mental acuity. According to some recent data, OSA sufferers may have a 46 percent greater chance of dying early. It can take 12 to 15 years off your life, which is more than smoking. The good news? Sleep apnea, once diagnosed, can be treated. There are two recommended treatment methods for OSA. The first is CPAP: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure which is used as a first line of defense by most physicians. This is a machine with a mask that forces air through your mouth and nose to bypass any obstruction and get air into the lungs. Due to the nature of wearing 12

EACH NEW YEAR IS LIKE A CLEAN SLATE OR A BLANK CANVAS. Many of us start out with a host of good intentions, particularly in the areas of health and diet. A new restaurant in Carbondale takes the guesswork out of eating healthy. Virtually everything on the menu at The Beat is good for you. Tobyn Britt and Lucy Perutz opened their eatery at 968 Main Street in April of 2019, starting out with a daily lunch menu. They began serving dinner on Fridays and Saturdays in October, and expanded to nightly dinners in November. The freshly-made food has been a hit with locals in Carbondale and the Roaring Fork Valley, and with tourists. “When people Google ‘vegetarian restaurant’ in our area, we’re the first one that comes up,” says Lucy. In 2014, Tobyn opened a smoothie bar called The Beat in his mother’s gift shop, Dancing Colours. When he met Lucy at the 5Point Film Festival in 2015, the two connected instantly and were married within 12 days. After operating the smoothie bar together for a while, they decided to approach Tobyn’s mother with the idea of converting her shop into a full restaurant. She agreed, and after closing the shop for a year and a half of extensive renovations, their dream became a reality. The Beat’s atmosphere is comfortable and inviting, with eclectic decor and a cozy fireplace in the dining room near the bar. “Everyone wants the table by the fireplace,” says Lucy. The restaurant seats about 38, with another 20 seats outdoors (in nice weather), and six seats at the bar. “Lunch has been our bread and butter,” says Tobyn. Lucy adds, “People want something quick, light, and tasty that won’t make them sleepy.” The restaurant offers a unique “Beatbox” lunch special each day, which Lucy describes as “filling, healthy, and flavorful—and super vegetable-heavy. It checks all the boxes. I wake up every day and think, I’ve got to come up with a new soup and a Beatbox.” “It’s a cool challenge,” Tobyn agrees. Some customers come in every single day, so the pair must be making good decisions. About 80-95 percent of the ingredients are organic, and local ingredients are used whenever possible, based on availability and what’s in season (see sidebar). Everything on the menu is clearly labeled as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, which helps customers order according to their dietary preferences and requirements. Lucy, who is from Chicago, has been a vegetarian since she was 12, so creating this kind of food is second nature to her. “I don’t even know how to cook with meat,” she says, adding, “it excites me to cook vegetarian.” CONTINUED >

“We make our own dog food with the scraps,” Lucy says.

For people concerned about getting enough protein, there are a variety of sources on the menu, “like tofu, tempeh, local beans, quinoa, and smoothies with vegan protein powder,” says Tobyn. “Some vegetables have more digestible protein per gram than beef,” notes Lucy.

Lucy and Tobyn are quick to praise their staff. “We really love our team. We have some awesome people here that are really invested,” says Lucy, pointing out that all tips are pooled and shared equally among the entire staff. “[Another] cool part of the business is that it’s a family operation.”

DESERT DELIGHT ESCAPING THE SNOW FOR A WELLNESS WEEKEND IN SCOTTSDALE

ARTICLE AMELIA PAVLIK

LIKE BUTTER. That’s how I’d describe the way my muscles felt as the massage therapist kneaded the blend of aromatherapy and CBD oils into my skin. I was in the midst of a 90-minute aromatherapy wrap in the Well & Being Spa at the acclaimed Fairmont Scottsdale Princess—and it was heaven. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting spas from Park City to Prague. After hearing about the Princess’s impressive 44,000-square-foot spa, I decided to check it out for myself. I found this spot to be such a complete destination for luxury wellness that I never needed to leave the property. It’s no secret that Roaring Fork Valley locals cherish an escape or two to the desert every winter. But if you’re looking to freshen up your usual Moab/Sedona/Santa Fe routine, consider venturing just a bit further south to Scottsdale. Here are a few must-includes for a visit to the Princess—the longest-running AAA Five Diamond resort in Arizona—that will leave you feeling rested, renewed, and ready to take on the rest of the cold season’s wrath. SLEEP Each night, I snuggled into my king size bed in one of the luxurious rooms, which are just a quick walk from the Well & Being Spa, a variety of restaurants, and the recently renovated pool. From my patio overlooking one of the Princess’s lakes, to touches like an electric tea kettle and Rose 31 Le Labo toiletries, my room offered the feel of a cozy and chic home-away-from-home.

TR AVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)

RELAX Since I had Fairmont Gold status during my stay, I had access to the spa and numerous other perks throughout the weekend. (Pick up access for yourself by booking a treatment or paying an additional fee.) The spa offers a full menu of traditional treatments like pedicures and facials, plus less common options including singing bowl therapy and cupping. I spent my days at the Princess primarily at the spa, starting with a tuna poke bowl and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc poolside, followed by a visit to the eucalyptus inhalation room and the waterfall grotto for an H2O-powered massage. And of course, there was that heavenly massage. Be sure to get the CBD oil add-on—it’s worth it. SWEAT If creative fitness classes and a state-of-the-art gym are part of your ideal vacation, the Princess will be a dream for you. (Note that you need to have access to the Well & Being Spa to enjoy the fitness programming and gym.) Try aerial yoga, or bounce away the calories like I did in the bungee fitness class. If you’d prefer a solo workout, the gym has every type of cardio and weight training equipment your heart could desire. EAT AND DRINK My eating strategy on this getaway was simple: moderation throughout the day, and splurge at night! Another benefit of Fairmont Gold privileges is access to the Gold Lounge, where a complimentary breakfast is served every morning. I kicked off the day with a glass of green juice, fruit, and yogurt (although it was tough to resist the crème brûlée oatmeal). Later, a poolside lunch was followed by happy hour bites in the Gold Lounge. One evening meal was spent at the chic Bourbon Steak restaurant (created by celebrity chef Michael Mina) where I dug into an extravagant Maine lobster pot pie brimming with a pound of meat and brandied lobster cream, plated tableside. Finally, I enjoyed my last supper at La Hacienda by Richard Sandoval, where a wine-infused margarita and mini lobster tacos hit the spot. If true wellness includes the occasional indulgence, this was just the way to end a rejuvenating weekend in the desert. 26

WO R KO U T S F O R YO U R MOODS NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health? It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts. But, whatever

mood-boosting endorphins.

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.

C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.

ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10K’s or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time. When your head is full of thoughts, it can get overwhelming. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) provides a break from that with short bursts of 100% focus followed by rest. Here’s a quick circuit.

01 K E T T L E B E L L SW I N G S Do as many reps as possible in 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.

02 H I G H K N E E S Climb it out for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.

03 P L A N K Hold your plank for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest. Repeat the circuit three times for a quick workout that touches on strength, cardio + core.

NEVER PLAYED PICKLEBALL BEFORE? 2020 IS THE YEAR TO START

PADDLE ON Not sure which paddle is best for beginners? Jim Noyes says, “Think light-medium weight and standard grip size unless you have very big or very small hands. Hard to go wrong with Paddletek or Unix. Get great advice and deals from PickleballCentral.com. Or, you can always borrow ‘loaners’ at RFPA gatherings.” Maria Tafuri enjoys a game in Carbondale this past fall.

Mention the game to any valley player and they’ll proclaim its greatness.

“With access to the old dual-purpose courts plus these six new courts, Carbondale will be the largest pickleball venue between Grand Junction and Arvada,” says Roaring Fork Pickleball Association (RFPA) board member Jim Noyes. “Pickleball is a uniquely social, community-building sport. We are growing, and we have needed these permanent, dedicated courts for a long time.”

“Pickleball is the one enjoyable exercise that combines sport and friendship to new heights,” says instructor Wayne Walden. “It’s super fun and easy to learn—all ages and abilities can play,” notes competitive player Josh Goldman. “Camaraderie and friendly competition: The fountain of youth is pickleball,” raves septuagenarian Joe Markham.
