There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So, this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you take the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends and bask in the magic of the winter season.

off Pierce Park Road, at its Oct. 8 meeting. At this time, the land does not have sufficient connectivity to adjacent public property, so no public trail construction is currently planned. This donation does add to the 12,000 acres of Foothills property that has been purchased and preserved with Foothills Levy funds.

RENOVATE & REFINE

Holiday Wreaths 101 FESTIVE SCENTS AND COLORS OF THE SEASON

Boise Lifestyle | December 2019

THERE IS NOTHING MORE WELCOMING THAN A BEAUTIFUL SEASONAL WREATH. Wreaths have been used as a decorative sign of the season for hundreds of years and can adorn any part of your home. In many homes, this symbol of growth and everlasting life can be found both inside and out. More than just decoration, the wreath has significant meaning for the season. The circular shape represents eternity, for it has no beginning and no end. The evergreen, most frequently used in making wreathes, symbolizes growth and upward movement. Available in many local shops and online, decorated holiday wreaths are available in a wide variety of different styles, sizes and materials. You can easily find a wreath to compliment the style of your home. If you are feeling creative, it can be fun to add your own personal flair to a new wreath or give an old wreath a makeover. For the truly adventurous, plan a wreath-making excursion to gather local materials and make one from scratch.

“MORE THAN JUST DECORATION, THE WREATH HAS SIGNIFICANT MEANING FOR THE SEASON. THE CIRCULAR SHAPE REPRESENTS ETERNITY, FOR IT HAS NO BEGINNING AND NO END. THE EVERGREEN, MOST FREQUENTLY USED IN MAKING WREATHES, SYMBOLIZES GROWTH AND UPWARD MOVEMENT.”

Go Local + Use fresh greens and fruits + Make a living wreath from succulents + Add local berry stems and pinecones Fresh, green, mountain scents, clove, decorated fruits of the season and mountain pinecones will not only represent where you live but pay homage to the natural beauty of our state. Make a day of it by packing a thermos of hot chocolate and steamy, creamy, coffee and a pair of sturdy garden clippers, then head out to the nearest forest to collect materials to make your own wreath. For a more lasting seasonal look that will last for years, buy an evergreen wreath from your favorite home décor store and embellish with natural fresh greens and fruit. Mixing the artificial wreath with the live greens not only makes for a beautiful full wreath but is easy to change out, as the greens and fruit lose their freshness. Add cinnamon scent or your favorite winter-scented oil to fresh or pre-made artificial wreaths. Your front door will not only look festive, but the smell will be so inviting! 20

Boise Lifestyle | December 2019

Find Your Flair + Choose a favorite theme or color + Dress up an old wreath with new ribbon and ornaments for a modern farmhouse look.

After you decide on your size and style of wreath, set aside some time to get creative. Take the time to use floral tape and wire the elements securely to the base. The last thing you want is all your hard work to be ruined by temperamental glue. Once you are on a roll, you may find yourself crafting wreaths all year long.

“WREATHS HAVE BEEN USED AS A DECORATIVE SIGN OF THE SEASON FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS AND CAN ADORN ANY PART OF YOUR HOME. IN MANY HOMES, THIS SYMBOL OF GROWTH AND EVERLASTING LIFE CAN BE FOUND BOTH INSIDE AND OUT.” December 2019 | Boise Lifestyle

FESTIVAL OF TREES A great kickoff to the holiday season is the 36th annual Festival of Trees. Come experience the holiday magic of elaborately decorated Christmas trees, wreaths, and luxuriant home decor held at the Boise Centre and hosted by Saint Alphonsus Foundation. Enjoy visits with Santa, interactive train and LEGO displays, live entertainment and so much more. There is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Each year, proceeds from the Festival of Trees go to help Saint Alphonsus allocate extra healthcare efforts into our community. This year will be no exception as the funds raised will support the women’s mobile outreach program, which helps to bring the latest advancements in screening tools to outlying and rural communities in order to detect cancer in its earliest most treatable stages. Take in the magic Nov. 27 – Dec. 1. The gala is Nov. 26 and the fashion show is Dec. 2. Gala and fashion show require tickets in advance. SaintAlphonsus.org

BOISE TREE LIGHTING Grab a hot chocolate and head to downtown Boise for a fun family tradition. Located at The Grove Plaza, the majestic Christmas Tree glows with 5,200 lights beginning the day after Thanksgiving through the holiday season and into the new year. Each year, the Downtown Boise Association and it’s partners give out an estimated 4,000 candles that participants light before the tree lighting countdown. The Grove Plaza is home to the largest Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in Idaho and brings thousands of Treasure Valley residents to the downtown festivities. “Contrary to popular belief, we do not go out into the mountains to get a tree. The tree is always a local, Boise tree and is donated by the family to be the city holiday tree. Boise arborists and parks and recreation employees look all year for a family that would like to donate their tree,” Jordyn Neerdaels, marketing manager at Downtown Boise Association, says. It is free to visit, and the tree will be on display from now until the first of the year. The ceremony will take place the day after Thanksgiving on Nov. 29, from 5-6:30pm. WATER & WOODS

FIVE REASONS TO GET

excited about winter

Snow is like the landscape has donned its formal attire, which makes winter scenery spectacular.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ROGER PHILLIPS

28

Boise Lifestyle | December 2019

Ski resorts have a festive atmosphere that make every day on the slopes feel like a holiday.

I UNDERSTAND WINTER CAN BE A TRYING TIME FOR SOME FOLKS IN THE TREASURE VALLEY. Sometimes it seems like we get the bad aspects (icy roads, inversions and cold temperatures) without many of the recreation opportunities that our friends in the mountains enjoy. At the same time, I look forward to winter and all that it brings, good and bad. It’s part of deal that comes with living in a four-season area. You only get three months of each season, so you want to enjoy the best of what each offers. Winter is no different than the other seasons; there are things we enjoy and others we could live without, and you don’t have to look hard, travel far or spend a bunch of money to find enjoyment during winter. Here are five of them: SNOW Snow is beautiful, and it’s as simple as that. I always marvel at how pristine and elegant the woods, meadows, rivers and mountains look with a fresh coat of snow, and the more it piles up, the more beautiful they look. It also astounds me how places that I know intimately can look new and foreign when there’s a foot or two of snow on the ground. Even if you hate the cold and have no interest in snow sports, head north during winter (wait for a clear, sunny day) and experience the beauty of nature swathed in snow. SKI RESORTS There’s usually something new to experience at Idaho’s ski resorts, and this year is no exception. Bogus Basin and Tamarack installed new lifts, and they’re expected to be ready by ski season. Tamarack has been bustling with development, and it will be cool to see how the resort transforms this winter. Sun Valley and Brundage will offer their usual winter fun. There’s something magical and festive about ski resorts, and Bald eagles spend winter along the Boise River, and they’re an unmistakable bird that turns us all into bird watchers.

they also have things to offer nonskiers. CONTINUED >

WATER & WOODS

(CON TI N U ED)

BALD EAGLES Truth be told, I’m not a big bird watcher, unless you consider duck hunting bird watching. But every winter, I catch myself staring at the bare cottonwood branches along the Boise River and waiting to see the tell-tale white head and tail feathers of a bald eagle. Sometimes I even spot them soaring above the river on my morning commute. Eagles winter in the Treasure Valley, and you can spot them anywhere along the Boise River, but they commonly roost in Southeast Boise in the Barber area. You can also–fittingly–spot them around Eagle Island and Lake Lowell, not to mention along the Snake and Payette rivers. FIRES Like most people, I love standing next to a fire on a chilly day, and I am not picky about what kind. It can be a campfire, fire pit, fireplace, wood stove or even a gas fireplace. I love to feel the intense heat washing over and soaking into me. Few things are better after spending a day in the cold outdoors than warming my bones in front of a fire. It’s a simple pleasure I look forward to during winter. BUNDLING UP Going outdoors is like a grudge match against Old Man Winter. He can’t keep me inside regardless of what frigid temperatures and blustery weather he sends. That’s because I have a closet full of clothes that are my armor against winter. I like putting on layers and braving the elements, and I get a giddy thrill when I am out in single-digit temperatures or blizzard conditions, and I am warm, dry and comfy. It’s like cheating, only socially acceptable and a lot of fun. 30

PARTING THOUGHTS

Inspired b y S u c c e s s WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? The ability to create positive change in the community and working to leave my corner of the world better than when I came into it. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT? Helping each individual to recognize their strength, value and self-worth, which is at the heart of what we do at the WCA. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PROUD OF? My family. My husband and I have two children, one of whom is now married with two children of her own. They are all amazing, and I am so lucky that they live close and I get to see them often. HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR CAREER PATH? I followed my passion and embraced opportunities as they presented themselves. My position as executive director allows me to use my skills as a former small business owner and accountant and to draw from experiences gained through many years working in our community.
