IT’S NO SECRET THAT FOOD IS ONE OF MY PASSIONS. I was never a picky eater as a kid (except for peas, the devil’s vegetable), but as an adult, I have found that food is not only a great way to fill the belly but to expand your mind. Food is one of my favorite parts of traveling and my preferred method of bonding with friends. In this issue, we explore some of the newest eateries in town, with many of them housed in the same place, The Iron District. With food halls gaining popularity, The Iron District takes it a step further and mixes restaurants with retail, all in shipping containers. Tiny home living with a fantastic menu? Count me in! For those of us that only need a cast iron pan and some great ingredients, we can always head to local favorite Green Acres Market. This regional favorite has been bringing fresh produce and healthy supplements to Northlanders for years, and they are always looking for new ways to innovate. I have to admit that food has been a bit of a battleground for me of late, too. My toddler,

sweet spot of food discovery, and I love every minute of it. There's nothing more fun that watching a baby try their first taste of creamy ice cream or a briny olive. As fall sets in, I hope that your tables are full of family, friends, and food. Enjoy your life, one bite at a time!

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Food and Family DEAR NEIGHBORS, If you see me out and about with a huge smile on my face, it's because October is my favorite month of the year! I love everything about it - the crisp air, pumpkin carving, warm sweaters, and bonfires. It's our wedding anniversary month, and we will be welcoming a new baby boy. We are, of course, major football fans - GO CHIEFS! - and my 3-year-old is obsessed with Halloween. Food is always a favorite topic of mine. We love going out to eat, but I also love to cook. Let me be clear though, I am not great at cooking, but I do enjoy it. Let's say I'm an enthusiastic cook, and I have a very receptive audience! My son and I make cooking shows together, and trying new recipes is a favorite activity in our house. My cooking career may be taking a brief hiatus as we adjust to life as a family of four, though. That's okay because there are so many great options for dinner or take out in the Northland! Just like I mentioned in our fashion issue, the Northland is a treasure trove of hidden gems in the way of great local restaurants. In our area (Liberty), several new restaurants are opening that we are excited to try, although my heart and appetite never want to pass up Mi Hacienda's Mexican food! October is a beautiful month to soak up the outdoors before we have to hunker down for winter. Enjoy family, try a new restaurant, and enjoy all the fun that comes with Halloween! See you soon!

LET ME GUESS--YOU’RE ON THE KETO DIET? No? Maybe you’re gluten-free or vegan. Or perhaps you want to know that the meat that you’re eating is humanely raised using no antibiotics. No matter the diet, Green Acres Market at the Village at Briarcliff likely has that which you seek. Green Acres was started 25 years ago by John and Barb Hoffman in Wichita. After giving birth to a daughter with special needs, Barb dove into being a caretaker. As so often happens, Barb’s health started to decline under the strain of caring for her daughter. To take care of herself, she consulted Dr. Reardon, an early adopter of functional medicine. His care started her on the path to holistic health. The Hoffmans had started in the greenhouse plant business, but after discovering the world of organic food and health supplements, they wanted to share it. Thus, the first Green Acres was born in Wichita. Starting small, they focused on finding products that bucked the trends of big agriculture--organic foods and trusted supplement lines. For many years, they were happy with one store in Wichita. Twelve years ago, their second-born daughter, Shannon, decided that Kansas City needed a Green Acres as well. Their second store started a modest expansion that now includes four stores in Wichita, two in Oklahoma, and one in Kansas City North. The Briarcliff location is more than a grocery store. Of course, they feature great produce, both organic and conventional, with conventional produce available when it is safe to do so. You won’t find the ‘dirty dozen’ of fruits and vegetables that are most likely to retain pesticides in their skins, but more resistant plants, such as thick-skinned things like pineapple, may be available. Outside of the produce section, Green Acres features myriad products aimed at specialized diets, whether that’s quinoa pasta for those avoiding gluten or coconut water to rehydrate without overloading on sugar. They also pride themselves on their supplements, which made such a CONTINUED >

difference in Barb Hoffman’s life so many years ago. Green Acres also features natural beauty products. Beyond the aisles, Green Acres is a favorite stop for lunch, dinner, or take away food, as their prepared foods department rivals many restaurants. With freshly baked pastries, sumptuous salads, four fresh soups daily, and specials, they offer lots of options for those looking for something quick, easy, and tasty. They are also a pickup site for Evolve Paleo Chef, whether you’ve ordered ahead or need a quick meal on the go. The Briarcliff Village location prides itself on its wine and beer selection. They focus on natural wines, biodynamic wines, and small estate wines. A store favorite is Fitvine, a line started by runners that offers nutritional information about each glass, allowing imbibers to know how many calories and sugars they are ingesting. In addition to being a grocery store, Green Acres also acts as a bridge to other holistic services. They often offer events with Northland Physical Medicine when possible. Chiropractor Kendra Pearson, D.C. enjoys guiding people in a healthy lifestyle and has lead seminars on the Keto lifestyle through the store. Dr. Jane Russell, an integrative functional-medicine expert, will be giving a talk about the benefits of functional medicine in November. The market has always been the center of life in most communities, and Green Acres Market aims to be that center for health-minded people. For more information

RELIEF FOR THE FOOD INSECURE
IMAGINE GOING TO BED ON A TUESDAY NIGHT WITHOUT KNOWING IF YOU WOULD HAVE DINNER ON WEDNESDAY. That feeling of uncertainty is a reality for 3500 children in Platte County every night. Food insecurity is a real issue facing many families, and not just the families that most consider ‘low income’. For those families, food pantries can be the stop gap that they need to get back on their feet. Many turn to Harvesters Food Bank. Now, they can find relief a little closer to home at Mimi’s Pantry in Riverside.

GIVING BACK
(CON TI N U ED)
Mimi’s Pantry, which opened in June, has been the passion project of real estate mogul Dennis Curtin. Curtin, who was the first RE/MAX franchise ever in 1975, may seem removed from food insecurity, but he remembers lean times growing up. His mother, Lillian ‘Mimi’ Curtin, ran a small cafe and supermarket deli and would often extend compassion to families that were struggling because she knew what it felt like. Even with two working parents, sometimes times got tough. Mimi’s Pantry is the outgrowth of her compassion. The pantry is partnered with not only Harvesters Food Bank but also Happy Bottoms, which provides diapers to mothers with low income. Although many people think to donate canned or boxed goods to Harvesters, Curtin’s aim is to provide healthier options to supplement the shelf stable pantry items. Fresh produce is available, as well as meat and dairy. Volunteers not only stock the shelves but also offer healthy recipes to best utilize the supplies and keep families growing well. The pantry is set up like a regular grocery store with a few extra perks, such as a library for parents to take books home for their children as well. “When you’re worried about where your next meal will come from, books are the last thing on your mind. So this gives parents a chance to give their kids another great gift, the love of reading,” says Curtin. In the first month, Curtin and his staff, lead by his daughter, Executive Director Kelley Curtin-Catterson, expected 25 families to come through the doors. More than 100 families visited the Pantry in the first two weeks. “Harvesters warned me that the need was greater than I expected and they were right. We are in the right place at the right time and are learning as we go,” says Curtin. Curtin says that Mimi’s Pantry is always accepting donations, whether that’s of food items or money that can be used to purchase more food from Harvesters. Either way, he’s found a passion in helping others, just like his mother did so long ago. To

NEW BRAUNFELS BRINGS A LITTLE GERMANY TO TEXAS
ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY AARON LEIMKUEHLER
24
Northland Lifestyle | October 2019
If you're headed to Texas,
YOU MIGHT THINK TO PACK YOUR STETSON AND BOOTS, BUT YOUR LEDERHOSEN? You might be surprised! Just a half-hour outside of San Antonio sits a spring-fed oasis for Oktoberfest lovers and river rats alike. The area where New Braunfels now sits has been inhabited since the 1600s. Native tribes were drawn to the fresh spring water and the Spanish discovered the area during one of their scouting expeditions. Although the land was first owned in 1825, it was sold after the bloody battles that cemented Texas as a republic. Named for Braunfels, Germany, the area was founded by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels in 1845. With two spring-fed rivers, the Comal and the Guadalupe, it’s easy to see why the Prince wanted to put down roots. Today, those two rivers bring in a flood of visitors every summer, all hoping to enjoy the cool water in the middle of a tube. Schlitterbahn created its first waterpark in New Braunfels 40 years ago, building its original site to resemble a Bavarian castle. Now, you can visit four water parks in one, with several attractions emptying into the Comal River. But there’s more to do than just float in New Braunfels. With a growing dining scene, you can easily eat your way around the city as well, and it’s not all BBQ. Between New Braunfels and its neighboring town of Gruene, there’s plenty of history to investigate as well. Want to dance in the oldest dance hall in Texas? You can kick up your heels at the Gruene Hall, where some of the biggest names in country music have played. Or maybe Texas Hill Country is more your speed. Head to one of the many wineries or have a picnic in the rolling hills. But if you’re looking for good eats, look no further than New Braunfels.
Stop 1
:
NAEGELIN’S BAKERY Naegelin’s Bakery is more than just the place for a perfect sprinkled donut. It’s the oldest continuously operating bakery in Texas. Founded in 1868, they offer a huge variety of pastries, breads, donuts, pies, and cakes. Try the sweet pretzels for a German favorite or go for a bit of Czech flavor with a kolache. Available in sweet or savory versions, kolaches are typified by a yeasted dough. Sweet kolaches occur in circles with a dollop of luscious fruit or seed filling. Try the apricot at Naegelin’s. You won’t be disappointed. If you’re craving something savory, the bratwurst kolache is the best pig in a blanket you could hope for. Naegelins.com CONTINUED >

BLACK’S BBQ
Is it sacrilegious to eat barbeque anywhere but Kansas City? Maybe. Is it also delicious? Absolutely. If you want to know what the fuss is about, head over to Black’s BBQ. Originally started in Lockhart, TX, this down-home joint has expanded to New Braunfels. Now it hosts a pit that can handle 500 lbs at a time and by the look of the lines, they need the space. Grab a pound of the brisket and know what it means to have something melt in your mouth. Don’t worry; Kansas City has Black’s beat in sides. There was nary a baked bean to be seen. I was too busy eating fork-tender beef to notice though. BlacksBBQ.com
Stop 3: KRAUSE’S CAFE
There are two sides to Krause’s Cafe. Walk in the door around the corner from the quaint mural of German life and you’ll find a homey cafe serving German comfort food favorites like kase schnitzel with biercheese and french fries. For the kiddos, try the four cheese spatzle. They’ll never guess it’s not mac and cheese. If you need a little more air, head out to the Biergarten and try to believe that you’re not in Bavaria. Their expansive beerhall replicates the feeling of Oktoberfest with plenty of German brews on tap as well as a huge selection of Texas beers. Krausescafe.com

GRISTMILL RIVER RESTAURANT AND BAR For a truly New Braunfels experience, head to the Gruene Historic District. There you’ll find the historic grist mill where farmers used to gin their cotton in the 1800s. After a fire decimated the majority of the gin in 1922, the building sat empty until 1977 when it reopened as the Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar. Now you can watch as people float down the Guadalupe while you dine on fresh catfish, chicken fried steak, and tomatillo chicken. They make a mean margarita with only freshly squeezed limes that slakes the thirst during hot Texas afternoons. And don’t miss the summer squash sauteed with bacon, tomatoes, and butter or the round cut Gristmill fries. You won’t regret it. GristmillRestaurant.com

SNOW BUH BY ICE CREAM BAE
Addison Sichampanakhone and Jackie Faltermeier love ice cream. After a year at the Made in KC Marketplace, they are branching out with their newest concept. Sichampanakhones says that vanilla won’t be an option. Instead, they are focusing on the crazy flavors--ube, which tastes like cereal milk, or black ice cream. They also promise vegan options. Pictured here, they combine boba with soft serve for a take on a Mangoneada.
MORNING DAY CAFE
The Liberty Square may be a little darker since Morning Day Cafe left but North KC is a bit brighter. After moving her operations to Nixa, MO, owner Miranda Barchers is back to serve up real food breakfasts that Northlanders have come to love. Heather Hewey will head up the kitchen and help roll out a menu that combines a bit of the old and a bit of the new, including pastries.

KIND FOOD
Phillip and Jonelle Jones want you to like plants, but that’s not all. The concept behind Kind Food is more than just vegan food. They incorporate earth-friendly practices wherever possible, use efficient workflows in the kitchen and give back to the community whenever possible. Their vegan nachos feature their signature jackpot (jack fruit and sweet potato) mix as well as cashew queso.
PLAINTAIN DISTRICT
Cuevas is getting back into the kitchen as well. Her popular food truck, which featured food from her husband’s homeland of Cuba will put down roots at the Iron District, dishing up plantain chips and cubanos to all that crave them. Like me.

AVOBITE
Who doesn’t love avocados? Veronica Soto, the owner of Avobite, wants to spread the gospel of avocado to the masses and plans to do that with a number of vegan or carnivore friendly dishes. This is her first outing as a restauranteur but says that her family has encouraged her, so she’s channeling that energy into hospitality.

B-RAD’S
Brad Buchele loves food and he loves people. With his trademark ‘kiss of smoke,’ he plans to serve a rotating menu of comfort foods from around the globe. Try the loco moco, a Puerto Rican pork chop, or a good old hamburger, all with a bit of sizzle.
SAFE BAKES
Amy Castillo knows that even people with allergies like something sweet. With Safe Bakes, she addresses this need, offering pastries and baked goods without the big eight allergens, as well as nonGMO She plans to offer specialized cookies to donuts to seasonal items, both on hand and available for custom order.
URBAN CAFE
Jason Clark is a busy man. He's not only opening in the Iron District, but he's also expanding his brick and mortar concepts in midtown and runs a food truck. With everything from a quinoa burger to lobster grilled cheese, Clark has something for everyone.

HOPS & VINE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
THE WESTONIAN
NESTLED IN A FORMER LUTHERAN EVANGELICAL CHURCH BUILT BY GERMAN IMMIGRANTS IN 1867, PIRTLE WINERY HAS BEEN A DESTINATION FOR WINE LOVERS SINCE 1978. In the 40 years since they opened, they have racked up many awards and pleased the palates of thousands of visitors. To commemorate this anniversary, they released The Westonian. The Westonian is a full-bodied red wine, made with grapes from their vineyard that they planted 26 years ago. This food-friendly wine has hints of black cherry with soft tannins, offering a bold flavor but a smooth finish. It has been barrel-aged for 12 months in oak. Grab a bottle to pair with a filet, a hearty red sauce pasta, or by enjoy by itself. Even Pirtle's anniversary wines are winners. Released one year ago, The Westonian won a gold medal at the last Jefferson Cup International Wine Competition. Find it at PirtleWinery.com.

Kids Love Us. Parents Trust Us! Did you know addressing your child’s oral health plan is optimal at age two to maximize future dental health? Once your child’s first teeth start growing, you should add dental appointments to your to-do list. From two onwards, they should visit a dentist twice every year. The sooner children begin getting regular checkups, the healthier their mouths will stay throughout their lives.
