Sarah worked closely with architects Donald Fairbanks, Marybeth Woods and builder Grace Design and Build throughout the project in order to create a seamless finished product. “We had one chance to get it right,” Sarah says, “and we wanted to make it perfect for the client.” Sarah has worked as an interior designer for about 10 years. She has both her residential and professional Interior Design certificates from Fairfield University. Tusk Home + Design was established in 2011 and now features a retail storefront, opened in 2017, selling furniture and accessories. “I want people to come into the store and feel welcomed; the store has a happy vibe. We have over 400 vendors and while we do use items from the floor in our design projects, we can really get anything,” Sarah says. “The store is kind of like a billboard. There is so much more behind it that we can get for you." “We cater to everyone,” Sarah continues. “We work with all budgets and different project sizes. IF YOU’RE CRAVING A COOLER WARDROBE, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN CHIC WEST COAST INSPIRED BOUTIQUE, WEST.
Kitt wears Simply Eartha Pendant with Heart R13 Denim Jacket with Gold Embroidery, $900 Pam & Gela Pants Monrow Shirt, $70 Jewelry by JL Rocks
“IF CHANEL AND JIMMY HENDRIX HAD A BABY…” THAT IS THE THOUGHT-PROVOKING TAG-LINE OF WEST, AN EDGY BOUTIQUE LOCATED ON THE POST ROAD IN DOWNTOWN WESTPORT. “It’s such an eclectic idea and it’s so spot-on for the store,” says the owner of West, Kitt Shapiro, a visionary full of positive energy and daughter of the iconic performer, author and activist, Eartha Kitt. Kitt was always interested in fashion. “I started out in the fashion industry,” Kitt says. “I modeled for a bit. I went on to work for my mother - I did everything from producing her tours to albums to merchandise and branding and everything like that.” After her mother passed away, Kitt created an accessories line called Simply Eartha in her mother’s memory. “I use her words as well as her hand-drawn heart on jewelry, t-shirts, blankets and things for the home.” Kitt’s Simply Eartha line brought her into the world of retail, so when she had the opportunity to take over West, she gladly rose to the occasion. Kitt loved West for years and was a big fan of the founder and previous owner, Laura Maged. “Laura was going to move to Los Angeles and close the store,” Kitt recalls. “I said ‘You can’t close this store...It’s where I shop!’ I put my money where my mouth is and bought the store.” Although Kitt was fairly new to the other side of the fashion industry at the time, she had overwhelming support from her peers. “I have incredible role models in this town,” Kitt proudly states. “Other women who own businesses have been incredibly supportive and it just feels right.” Kitt’s fearlessness is a core part of who she is, and she is thankful she decided to take ownership of West. “I started a business and a new chapter in my life that I would have never envisioned,” Kitt says. Her advice to others who are faced with similar opportunities is: “You just have to go for it. Life is all about trying new things.” She recalls a special piece of her mother’s advice, “My mother taught me to appreciate all the curves the river of life takes. You learn from and appreciate the beauty in all the little spots that appear in your life that you’re not expecting.” Kitt is inspired by the spirit of community in Westport. Despite what some say about the future of retail, she is excited to persevere downtown shopping. “I think retail is certainly evolving, but I don’t believe that it’s dying,” Kitt says with confidence. “[Retail] is sort of going back to a focus on community. People want to feel comfortable and have conversations - you can’t get that on the internet. You want to be able to connect with people and support each other.”

Kitt describes the store as cool, funky and a hidden gem in town. “The previous owner wanted to bring the West Coast vibe and style to the East Coast,” Kitt says. “We’ve got people here who want to be a little edgy, but also comfortable and… laid back. We’ve got moms, professionals, creatives and lots of other different types of customers and I think we are able to provide everybody with a sense of being an individual.” Kitt’s styling advice is to put pieces together that you love but you wouldn’t necessarily think go together at first and, of course, have fun with it. “When we feel good and like how we look in the mirror, it sets the tone for our day and we feel it,” Kitt says. “I think that is what fashion is really all about. It’s feeling it, being who you are and appreciating who you are.” Follow West on Instagram: @west2westport

+
what it is There are many different types of fades, but ultimately a fade haircut is one that tapers in length the further down you go on the back and sides, meaning it isn’t trimmed to just one standard length all around. The level of fade (low, mid or high) depends on what point the shortest part of the hair begins to fade into a longer length. ASK FOR Taper fade, low fade, mid fade, high fade or skin fade
+
what it is This popular style is good for many types of hair as long as you have a lot of it. You’ll need length in the front, back and sides generally long enough to at least brush your shoulders. KEEP IT CLEAN Be sure to keep your sideburns and neckline trimmed even as your hair grows out.

The quiff
+
what it is Closely related to the pompadour, the quiff haircut requires longer hair in the front and shorter hair in the back. The longer hair in the front is brushed upward and back from the forehead and away from the face. This look can be sleek and shiny for a classic look or texturized and matte for a modern take. ASK FOR Short sides and a long textured top. Be sure enough hair is left on top to brush back instead of standing straight up.

Hannah and her husband chose Westport for "the schools, the location, and because coming from New York City, we needed to live somewhere fashionable. People here like to look good when they go out!" While Westporters are on-point with our overall fashion-sense, she'd like us

all to put some thought into our casual wear. "You don’t just buy a pair of leggings. You buy a quality pair and a tee that truly flatters, and then your casual look is defined." As for price-point, Hannah encourages clients to spend more on every day essentials like a hand-bag, a jacket, and a pair of boots. So once you've shopped your closet, what's on Hannah's retail shopping list for fall? "Fall fashion is all about the '70s and 'Flower Power.' We're seeing a lot of patchwork, flowers, crochet, and stream-lined bell bottoms." Also on trend, "Western and fringe. A fringe suede jacket just goes so well with denim!" Here are Hannah's must-haves for your fall closet:
