Grateful... For It All. THESE ARE CRAZY TIMES. As TV sitcoms of dysfunctional families battle reality shows of dysfunctional families for eyeballs (both currently losing out to the dysfunctionality going on in Washington, D.C.), the decent folks of SW Lake Co. are all too ready for a breath of cool autumn air. Fortunately, we’re blessed with November, and its focus on the meaningfulness of friends and family: its gatherings for Thanksgiving Day and beyond, where we can share

our tales of victory and defeat, of pain and exhilaration, of mourning and triumph, with those who (if we’re lucky) just may care. The stories of our lives deserve this dignity. I recently was privileged to attend a spectacular live performance of story-telling artist Will Tremont, host of “In Vino Veritas” (a storyteller’s showcase at Bliss Wine in Wauconda), in his comeback performance after nearly a year recovering from a serious, near fatal cancer diagnosis. It was an inspirationally triumphant evening. I can’t wait for the next one (7 p.m. November 25). Adding icing to the emo-cake: I received a recent blast-from-the-past of simultaneous serendipity and sadness. Decades ago, I was devastated by the loss of an immensely talented musician-friend killed in the crash of Northwest Flight 255, returning home to

for that song from Ben’s funeral?” they asked. “Ben’s sister just lost her 20-year-old son. Ben’s mom would like your song sung at his memorial service.” Digging through 30 years of cached memories was a whirlwind; an intensely personal roller-coaster recall of “the best of times, the worst of times." I was grateful to find the song, but pained by the occasion for its encore. I’m hopeful that such shared memories and memorials of intertwined lives can

serve as a balm, a bond, and a boost to our spirits. And I felt renewed gratitude for my loving wife, who makes my life meaningful and co-pilots our ship through all of life’s times of storms and smooth sailing. And so here we are. CULINARY CREATIONS

NEW TRADITIONS FOR THE THANKSGIVING TABLE

CONSIDER HEALTHIER TASTE CHOICES THIS YEAR TO DELIGHT YOUR FAMILY AND GUESTS IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN—YOUR CANDY-HANGOVER FROM HALLOWEEN HAS SUBSIDED, AND YOU HAVE DECADENT-THANKSGIVING-DINNER ON THE BRAIN. Imagine a spread of turkey...potatoes...gravy...stuffing...green bean casserole...

and fabulous desserts. So, how bad can one night of overindulgence be for your waistline? It’s estimated many people consume over 3000 calories from their meal and an additional 1500 from appetizers and drinks. Shocked? Yeah, I was too. There are two areas you can save calories, yet still enjoy all the deliciousness of the holiday: stuffing and dessert. One cup of bread stuffing equals 350 calories/17 grams of fat... as much as a chili cheese dog. Sorry, pie lovers, but this is really what’s bound to take your meal over the top. Pecan pie is the worst offender; one slice exceeds 500 calories/27 grams of fat thanks to the pecans and sugar filling. Cherry pie’s a close second, one slice exceeds 480 calories/22 grams of fat, and as much sugar as 10 donuts. If you’re a pumpkin pie fan, you can have a slice for 300 calories and 14 grams of fat. Better yet, try this healthier choice on the following page from delish.com. (Bonus

APPLE PIE BAKED APPLES INGREDIENTS + 3 Granny Smith apples + 3 pink lady apples + 1 tbsp. warm water + 2 tsp. cornstarch + 2 tbsp. butter + Juice from 1/2 a lemon + 1 tsp. cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling + 1/3 cup granulated sugar, plus more for sprinkling + 1 refrigerated pie crust + 1 large egg beaten with 1 tbsp. milk (egg wash) + Caramel, for drizzling

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375°. Peel and dice one green and one red apple. Slice off tops and, using a melon baller, hollow out the remaining apples. Set aside. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together warm water and cornstarch. 3. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add diced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and sugar. Bring to a simmer; cook until apples are tender, about 5 minutes. Add in cornstarch mixture and cook 5 minutes more. 4. Place hollowed out apples in a baking dish; fill with cooked apple mixture. 5. On a piece of wax paper, roll out pie dough and cut into 4 circles. Slice each circle into thin strips. Make a lattice top on each apple, trimming excess. 6. Brush crust with egg wash; sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake until apples are tender and crust is golden, 28—30 minutes.

HOW TO BE YOUR BEST SELF FOR THE HOLIDAYS

GET A NEW HAIRSTYLE THAT’S WARM, NATURAL AND EASY GOING

ARTICLE VICTOR MANUELL PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO TERRA, STEPHEN NEILSON 16

SW Lake Lifestyle | November 2019

WHEN THE HOLIDAYS COME WE ALWAYS WANT TO BE OUR BEST SELVES. As the invites roll in for parties whether you’re hosting or just a guest, now’s the time to think about a style that complements the season and looks great on you. For women holiday hair styles can be soft, romantic, messy and something that looks organic and natural. Buns and braids are always very popular. Color-wise a popular trend is to have a balayage technique done where the stylist paints your hair carefully with some color to create a sun-kissed natural look. Remember that warm tones for winter and holiday parties always work well. When the weather changes skin tones also change. Women often benefit from warmer tones so it is best to add some color to your hairstyle. I’ve always liked longer hair. I think long hair is always in with soft waves and curls. They used to say that when a woman turns 50 years old she needs to have a short hair style. I’ve been doing hair for more than 15 years and I’ve never agreed with that. I think that as long as you know how to wear your hair right you can have it as long as you like. For a man a hairstyle should be a little longer in winter. A great look includes a strong part and more texture. It should look like it’s not super done. What’s in for guys is something that’s natural and easy going. The neckline should be nice and clean down low, but blended above with the rest of the hair. A straight line across the back can look too much like a cheap haircut. It’s best to have a cut that’s blended across the back of the head for a more natural look. About the Author: Victor Manuell is the owner of Salon V’co, 515 Ela Road in Lake Zurich. Gratitude Without Boundaries LOCAL FOLKS SHARE THANKSGIVING INSPIRATION & SENTIMENTS FROM FAR AND WIDE

ARTICLE MICHAEL BEIGHTOL PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON

IN A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS IT’S NO SURPRISE THE IMPORTANCE THAT THANKSGIVING DAY HOLDS. The bonds of family, friends, sharing, reflection and gratitude run deep across this land. Common themes emerge when considering the things for which we give thanks: Health and happiness. Family and friends. Faith and traditions. Success and prosperity. Favorite memories and new opportunities. Inspirations and inspiring people. Being grateful all the time comes naturally to very few people for the simple reason that things aren’t always so rosy. Obstacles rear up. Ugliness occurs. Conflict, strife, tension and controversy can all be daily occurrences. A change in a loved one’s health happens over time or strikes with terrifying suddenness. Real life isn’t always a cheery post on Instagram. The meaning of the holiday to the local folks featured here are simple, straight-forward and eloquently expressed. For some of our neighbors new to SW Lake Co. and the United States the Thanksgiving holiday takes on special meaning. Across the years one way to define the human condition is to realize that as a species we are constantly on the move. For some, success may be found elsewhere whether it’s the empty-nester couple pulling up stakes, a new college graduate blazing trails far from home or an immigrant family brought to these shores seeking a better life. It’s our hope that as the holidays unfold we will all have opportunities to share good times, reflect on what’s important and bask in the warmth of family, friends and community. And along the way perhaps we’ll lend a hand to somebody who needs our help. 20

NAME: Jenny & Rich Wierzchon ORGANIZATION: Primrose School of Long Grove WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR THIS YEAR? RICH: Continued growth of our business and a wonderful healthy family at home. Growth of our business means we are providing quality education and care for more families in the Long Grove area. We love the families who attend our school and truly think of them as our own extended family. It’s always fun, exciting and a privilege to see a child grow up with you and develop. We have some students who started with us as infants and are now in our pre-kindergarten program. JENNY: I’m grateful to be able to work with my Rich & Jenny Wierzchon (PrimroseLongGrove.com)

husband who just happens to be my best friend. Lately, our oldest daughter joined us as a teacher so now it’s a real family affair. WHO INSPIRES YOU? JENNY: It’s always been about the children and families. I love to watch children grow and flourish. To see that inquisitiveness in their eyes, and the huge ear-to-ear grin when you know they’ve figured something out for themselves. I never get tired of those “moments” because each child is different and therefore those “moments” are always different. CONTINUED >

NAME: Kelly Difino ORGANIZATION: The Gent’s Place (Deer Park) WHO INSPIRES YOU? Our team inspires us. They are not only talented and dedicated, but truly wonderful people. I love to come to work and see their smiling faces and hear all their ideas and thoughts. They are the glue that holds us together. Our success is truly a team effort. We have such a dedicated and talented team. They work so hard and have fun while doing it. They are all like our kids -- sometimes a little naughty, but always loved (haha)! We have grown so close in the short time we’ve been together. It’s special. CAN YOU SHARE A FAVORITE THANKSGIVING MEMORY? A few years back, my sister was in charge of the turkey. She took such pride in the brining, basting and seasoning, but a few hours into roasting we realized she had placed it upside down in the pan. She will never live that down. I kept saying “something doesn’t look right!” Seriously though, our best memories are sharing with family and friends, and my husband Frank’s Honey Jack Sweet Potato Casserole.

Kelly Difino (thegentsplace.com)

NAME: Mollee Johnson ORGANIZATION: Style 1519 (Lake Zurich) WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION? I am most inspired by other small business owners. Being a small business owner means wearing many hats and being all things to many people. Seeing the hard work and drive of those around me inspires me to keep going. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS? My second daughter was nine weeks old and I wanted the best of both worlds. I wanted to be available for my kids at home, but after working for 10 years building a design department for another company, I was ready to be on my own. I realized there would never be an ideal time. If I was going to start my own design firm, this was the time to do it. The biggest obstacle was realizing I had to be the head of every department. I was the head of accounting, marketing, sales, IT. I had to educate myself on all these things. I couldn’t only focus on design if I was going to be successful. Thankfully, I had a great mentor who answered a lot of questions, and I found good people to put in place to help me. Mollee Johnson (style1519.com) 22

NAME: Sandra Frampton ORGANIZATION: @Properties Realty (Barrington) WHAT IS IT YOU ARE MOST GRATEFUL FOR THIS YEAR? I am most grateful for family. This year is a turning point for my family as my oldest son, Charlie, is a senior at Lake Zurich High School and getting ready for college. Every chance we get to spend together as a family is special. WHY’D YOU BECOME A REALTOR? I have always been a workaholic, so when we moved from the UK in 2001, one of my then-colleagues suggested I investigate a career

Sandra Frampton (sandraframpton.com)

in real estate in the U.S. I had never thought of it before, but after not being so impressed with my own real estate experiences as a customer, I knew I could bring a quality of service to the industry. My boys were still so young when I started out that without the support of my husband, Alan, I would never have been as successful at my job as I have been all these years. WHO INSPIRES YOU? My mom inspires me every day. My father passed away when I was 10 years old and she had to make some tough decisions and tough moves over the years, but she got us through it in a way that has helped me become the person I am today.

WHO INSPIRES YOU? That’s easy. My father. He worked in his own business to put food on the table and feed his six kids. He motivated me to start my own businesses and be my own boss. Of course, it’s meant highs and lows, but we have survived and become a stronger company. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO? Today we have a very strong bond in our family business. I’m looking forward for many generations to come to continue building and running the business.

I moved to Chicago when I was 21 and my first Thanksgiving was so exciting with everybody coming together to give thanks and share all this wonderful food. I was taught the meaning of Thanksgiving from Day One - to be thankful for everything we have. I’m really looking forward to it again this year. HURRICANE RECOVERY EFFORTS MOVED FAST TO ENSURE THE BAHAMAS ARE OPEN FOR TRAVELERS

IN SAN SALVADOR A WHITE CROSS MARKS THE SPOT IN THE BAHAMAS WHERE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS SUPPOSEDLY FIRST LANDED IN THE NEW WORLD. He didn’t stay long, however, being intent on finding riches elsewhere. These days, travelers are quite satisfied with the treasures they find in the Bahamas: brilliant turquoise water, gorgeous sandy beaches, excellent fishing and diving, and surroundings that range from quaint colonial villages to lovely secluded coves. It’s an ecological oasis, and while the devastation wrought by Hurricane Dorian earlier this year was well documented, most of the Bahamas were left untouched. Abacos and Grand Bahama Islands were walloped; 14 other islands remain open for business. “Travelers can do something for the Bahamas by doing nothing on one of our beaches,” said Dionisio D’Aguilar, Minister of Tourism. “Plan a trip to Nassau, Paradise Island and the Out Islands. Our beautiful island nation is ready to welcome you.”

So plan to kick back on the beach with an umbrella drink, and feel good doing it. Many resorts and hotels, like Atlantis, Paradise Island and Baha Mar, have already supported relief efforts in major ways, and hoteliers will be offering incentives and voluntourism opportunities soon. Check out Bahamas.com for updates regularly. Travelers looking for the laid-back experience of the Out Islands, such as Abaco, still have many choices. Exuma may be famous for

its swimming pigs, but it also has world-class boating and sailing, enough surrounding cays to island hop for a year and direct airline service from U.S. gateways. Harbour Island and Eleuthera, also with daily air service or a fast ferry from Nassau, have a coastal vibe that lures repeat visitors generation-after-generation. Further south Mayaguana and Inagua offer truly off-the-beaten-path options. In short, The Bahamas is still delivering the sandy break from everyday life that has long made it a top vacation choice.

She has great knowledge of the local area, is very responsive, has great attention to details and is an effective communicator and negotiator.
