WATER & WOODS

FIVE REASONS TO GET

excited about winter

Snow is like the landscape has donned its formal attire, which makes winter scenery spectacular.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ROGER PHILLIPS

I UNDERSTAND WINTER CAN BE A TRYING TIME FOR SOME FOLKS IN THE TREASURE VALLEY. Sometimes it seems like we get the bad aspects (icy roads, inversions and cold temperatures) without many of the recreation opportunities that our friends in the mountains enjoy. At the same time, I look forward to winter and all that it brings, good and bad. It’s part of deal that comes with living in a four-season area. You only get three months of each season, so you want to enjoy the best of what each offers. Bald eagles spend winter along the Boise River, and they’re an unmistakable bird that turns us all into bird watchers.

18

Meridian Lifestyle | December 2019

Ski resorts have a festive atmosphere that make every day on the slopes feel like a holiday.

Winter is no different than the other seasons; there are things we enjoy and others we could live without, and you don’t have to look hard, travel far or spend a bunch of money to find enjoyment during winter. Here are five of them: SNOW Snow is beautiful, and it’s as simple as that. I always marvel at how pristine and elegant the woods, meadows, rivers and mountains look with a fresh coat of snow, and the more it piles up, the more beautiful they look. It also astounds me how places that I know intimately can look new and foreign when there’s a foot or two of snow on the ground. Even if you hate the cold and have no interest in snow sports, head north during winter (wait for a clear, sunny day) and experience the beauty of nature swathed in snow. SKI RESORTS There’s usually something new to experience at Idaho’s ski resorts, and this year is no exception. Bogus Basin and Tamarack installed new lifts, and they’re expected to be ready by ski season. Tamarack has been bustling with development, and it will be cool to see how the resort transforms this winter. Sun Valley and Brundage will offer their usual winter fun. There’s something magical and festive about ski resorts, and they also have things to offer nonskiers. BALD EAGLES Truth be told, I’m not a big bird watcher, unless you consider duck hunting bird watching. But every winter, I catch myself staring at the bare cottonwood branches along the Boise River and waiting to see the tell-tale white head and tail feathers of a bald eagle. Sometimes I even spot them soaring above the river on my morning commute. Eagles winter in the Treasure Valley, and you can spot them anywhere along the Boise River, but they commonly roost in Southeast Boise in the Barber area. You can also–fittingly–spot them around Eagle Island and Lake Lowell, not to mention along the Snake and Payette rivers. FIRES Like most people, I love standing next to a fire on a chilly day, and I am not picky about what kind. It can be a campfire, fire pit, fireplace, wood stove or even a gas fireplace. I love to feel the intense heat washing over and soaking into me. Few things are better after spending a day in the cold outdoors than warming my bones in front of a fire. It’s a simple pleasure I look forward to during winter. BUNDLING UP Going outdoors is like a grudge match against Old Man Winter. He can’t keep me inside regardless of what frigid temperatures and blustery weather he sends. That’s because I have a closet full of clothes that are my armor against winter. I like putting on layers and braving the elements, and I get a giddy thrill when I am out in single-digit temperatures or blizzard conditions, and I am warm, dry

and comfy. It’s like cheating, only socially acceptable and a lot of fun. December 2019 | Meridian Lifestyle

G I F T G I V I N G G U I D E CHOOSE A THOUGHTFUL GIFT FROM OUR SELECTION OF LOCAL FAVORITES FROM OUR NEIGHBORHOOD BUSINESSES

SELECTING THE PERFECT GIFT CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING AND ALSO ONE OF THE MOST STRESSFUL THINGS ON THE HOLIDAY TO-DO LIST. Some are blessed with the natural talent of thoughtful gift-giving; some are not. As our list of recipients grows, so does the anxiety surrounding the age-old question, “What should I give?” The obvious answer to the dilemma usually equals cash, but that solution negates the adage, “It’s the thought that counts.” Putting some thought into our gifts is usually the best solution. Asking some of these questions may help. How do they like to relax? What do they like to do in their free time? Are they more practical, or do they like to indulge? Is there something you could give that would create an experience or allow you to spend time together? Talking about these ideas with your friends and loved ones is a great way to really score big without having them make a list. For our gift guide this year, we reached out to local businesses for suggestions and have collected some examples of items that will hopefully get your creative juices flowing. Gift-giving can be a great experience and a way to really show you care. Are you up to the challenge? Good luck and happy hunting! 20

ARTIST’S PALETTE

WINTER \IN BLOOM BRIGHTEN UP YOUR AESTHETIC THIS SEASON WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT FROM KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO.

PHOTOGRAPHY NICKI SEBASTIAN FOR JENNI KAYNE

26

Meridian Lifestyle | December 2019

FORSYTHIA Named after William Forsyth, a Scottish botanist, Forsythia is an early spring flowering shrub often found in gardens and parks. Forsythia are well-known for their resilience and tenacity as much as the bright, cheery yellow of the branches’ blooms.

RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

TWEEDIA This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.

LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slipper-shaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait—in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.

NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.

KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring.

PARTING THOUGHTS

Inspired b y S u c c e s s

Cyndy Radovich

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Success is living a life that is full of love, joy, and laughter. It is important to help others find their success as well. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT? I am passionate about working with individuals with developmental disabilities. HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR CAREER PATH? I moved to Boise from Georgia with my teaching degree but had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was working at the Olive Garden when I responded to an ad on Craig’s list that was looking for people who were interested in working with children with disabilities. I was fortunate enough to be hired by the company and then was also hired by a local developmental psychologist who trained me in relational developmental therapy. Throughout the years, I had supervisor positions in local agencies and then broke off on my own doing autism consultation and crisis intervention. I kept thinking that there needed to be a business in the Treasure Valley that exclusively hires individuals with developmental disabilities. I originally wanted to open a coffee shop (The Growing Perk) and did a lot of fundraising but was unable to come up with enough money for all of the supplies and equipment. Sweet Zola’s Candy for Inclusion was the direct result of not coming up with enough money, and it has been an absolute success. I get to see my employees working hard and interacting with customers daily, and there is nothing

more rewarding. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN PURSUING YOUR CAREER? This is not for the faint of heart. You must be able to deal with disappointment and constant changes, but if you are willing to stick with it, it will reward you tenfold.

For more information about the Idaho College Savings Program (“IDeal”), call 1.866.433.2533 or visit www.idsaves.org to obtain a Disclosure Statement. The Disclosure Statement discusses investment objectives, risks, charges, expenses, and other important information. Because investing in IDeal is an important decision for you and your family, you should read and consider the Disclosure Statement carefully before investing. Before you invest, consider whether your or the beneficiary’s home state offers any state tax or other state benefits such as financial aid, scholarship funds, and protection from creditors that are only available for investments in that state’s qualified tuition program. IDeal is administered by the Idaho College Savings Program Board (Board). Ascensus Broker Dealer Services, LLC (“ABD”), the program manager, and its affiliates, have overall responsibility for the day-to-day operations, including investment advisory and recordkeeping and administrative services. The Vanguard Group, Inc. (Vanguard) serves as Investment Manager for IDeal. Sallie Mae Bank serves as the Savings Portfolio Manager for IDeal. IDeal’s Portfolios invest in either: (i) mutual funds and a separate account offered or managed by Vanguard; or (ii) an FDIC-insured omnibus savings account held in trust by the Board at Sallie Mae Bank. Except for the Savings Portfolio, investments in IDeal are not insured by the FDIC. Units of the Portfolios are municipal securities and the value of units will vary with market conditions. Not FDIC-Insured (except for the Savings Portfolio). No Bank, State or Federal Guarantee. May Lose Value.
