school career, I’ve been fortunate to hone my skill set on a number of subjects. What I’ve found is that my favorite subjects to shoot are the people I interact with. There are beautiful people everywhere and every opportunity to capture them is a gift. I have photographed babies being born, memories being made, vows being exchanged, even people in their last moments of life. I love being part of the Williamsburg Lifestyle team and look forward to sharing the best of Williamsburg through my lens. I usually rely on the adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words” but this issue gives me plenty to talk about. The month of May gives us the chance to highlight leading ladies in the community. Some you may know from school, business socials, or even your neighborhood. The cover shot doesn’t tell half the story, so check out these local movers and shakers. I also ventured out with our publisher, Feather, for an evening with the local celebs of “Dancing With the Williamsburg Stars.” You’ll see a lot of familiar faces, and if you

FLAVOR RICH SOLUTIONS FOR MINDFUL MEALS challenges most parents endure when it comes to convincing children to eat their vegetables. out of necessity, stating that she has eaten a mostly plant-based diet for eight years. The care she became accustomed to taking with her own nutrition became more acute, and second nature, with practice. Layering a dish with a base of arugula, then cruciferous kale or brussel sprouts, utilizing proteins from tofu or tempeh, adding carbohydrates from sweet potatoes, and topping with avocado and dressing has become a habit. The labor associated with creating the most mindful sauces to make these meals delicious, without drenching the plate with sugar or saturated fats, was something Tonya embraced. Close friends, and her husband, encouraged her to prepare servings ahead. Making sauces that were whole food fat based, derived from tahini (ground sesame seeds) or peanut butter. Her cornerstone products are Tahini Lemon and Thai Peanut flavored. Sauces By Tonya can be found at The Good Market, at Virginia Beer Co. or directly from her social media: @real.food.coach on Instagram or realfoodcoach on Facebook. the supporting facets of each department.

Jeff Sullivan, the school’s media and marketing administrator, pointed out the accountability and emotional stability that is instilled along the way being evident in the student body. Along with the parents, and support of the staff, these “7 Pillars” are appropriately named for creating a successful framework to adhere to:

+ Christ centered + Stewardship + Communication + Awareness + Inquiry lead innovation + Respect + Wellness Johnny explains how “the school’s value proposition is to simply offer an education system based on values.” The trajectory of their curriculum, while being reviewed by the International Baccalaureate Organization, is geared toward life preparation and self management as well as academics. “Cal Berkley now offers a fully accredited class in adulting. What parent wouldn’t want that for their child?” Johnny explains. Graham continues “There needs to be an emphasis placed on attention to detail and having a sense of urgency. Giving students credit for hands-on classes including dinner table etiquette, conflict resolution, financial literacy and credit, basic automotive, and appropriate email composition is a practical way of shaping those thirty year old citizens who will be leading families of their own and shaping tomorrow’s workforce. We even offer a five part series on contingency plans.” Graham further illustrates how the idea is to move away from a trend of over-coddling, which then leads to a more numb student by the time they move to their jobs or higher education. Bringing attention to global literacy emphasizes collaboration awareness through familiarizing students with worldwide video conferencing. Part of the academic projection is to offer skills based preparation for jobs that are not even in the marketplace yet. The culture of the school is changing with the times to address relevant hurdles students overcome in their present reality as well. One of the ways socio economic biases are being defeated is through adjusting the uniform policy to close the gap on perceptions of household income. Personal cell phones are checked in at the start of each school day, and checked out at the end of the day, to limit media pollution and enhance student focus during class hours. The faculty endeavor to offer the best possible learning environment coupled with spiritual preparation and Biblical application. Williamsburg Christian Academy works along with parents to develop a concrete spiritual compass while providing a sound academic foundation. CityLifestyle.com/Williamsburg

LY N N E W I L L I A M S WEALTH MANAGER, MORGAN STANLEY Before entering the world of Wealth Management, with Morgan Stanley, Lynne Williams invested ten years in the commercial interior design sector. She is a wife to best-selling author, Tony Williams, and mother to a freshman at Clemson (Catherine) and Walsingham freshman (Paul). Q: WHAT WAS THE GREATEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU RECEIVED FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE? A: “The president of the design firm I worked at, in Richmond, Virginia emphasized that “We must enjoy our clients.” This person was driven, caring, and diligent, and always stressed the importance of not taking on a client strictly for the sake of business. “It’s better to have clients that become friends, rather than friends who become clients.” Q: WHAT WOULD AN INDULGENCE, FOR SOMEONE SO TASK ORIENTED, LOOK LIKE TO YOU? A: One example would be easy to take from my recent celebration of my 50th birthday. My girlfriends know me so well, as they told me to pack a bag and whisked me away to an undisclosed camping destination. The mission was to unplug with wine and nature, and we did just that. Q: WHAT IS A MAJOR LIFE LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED ON YOUR JOURNEY? A: Family is just so important to us. “Tony and I make a point of sitting down to dinner with everyone six out of seven nights each week.” One lesson we have learned is to avoid becoming so involved in our children’s lives that we lose touch with our own. Girlfriends are important, as we lean on one another to grow together. Date nights, and making time for personal fitness, keep me grounded. Attending whatever we can together are priorities, while realizing we cannot do it all. That allows us to move from task to purpose. CONTINUED >

PA G E B I S H O P REALTOR, LIZ MOORE REALTY Q: KNOWING YOU HAVE A BACKGROUND IN WRITING, AND PUBLISHING, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP BESIDES THAT? A: I always loved words. I grew up first wanting to be a librarian, then wanting to be a writer. I wrote a lot of poetry and short stories. I graduated from CNU with a degree in English/ creative writing. I see my love for books in my daughter now. She is a voracious reader! Q: WHAT DO YOU MOST ATTRIBUTE THE CURRENT SUCCESS YOU’RE FINDING REAL ESTATE TO? A: I am so blessed to have an incredible network of friends in this community and don’t know how I’d survive without my “tribe.” My goal as a realtor is to treat all of my clients like family. Most of my clients become family. I’ve met so many people through this job and am grateful for the opportunity to help people through major life transitions. Q: WHO WOULD YOU SAY HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR JOURNEY? A: My mom. She raised me and my brother as a single parent. She faced a lot of challenges in life but always navigated them with strength and grace. She always has such a positive outlook. She has loved and supported me through my own share of challenges. She’s the person I count on most.

R A C H E L TAY L O R WEDDING COORDINATOR, PREPARERS OF THE BRIDE

Q: UNRELATED TO WEDDING PLANNING, WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? A: When my first son was born I wanted to be the “perfect mom” and it was exhausting, and caused me an enormous amount of anxiety. My mom came to visit and she said, “Rachel things don’t have to be perfect. Some of the things you are stressing over can simply wait. Just enjoy him.” Q: WHO IS A WOMAN YOU LOOK UP TO MOST? A: There are three! My daughter, Shannon, and my two daughters in law, Paige and Ashley. They are all simply amazing women. Each are very strong and independent in their own right. They are all great women in their career fields. Shannon is a teacher, Paige is a regional manager for a software company and Ashley owns a Physical Therapy practice. Most importantly, they are inspiring mothers, wives, and friends.

CHERI GREEN PRIVATE BANKER, OLD POINT BANK

Q: WHAT FEMALE INFLUENCES DO YOU DRAW FROM? A: My mother was a hard worker in the British Virgin Islands, and I was unable to realize the sacrifices made until I assumed the role of a working mother. I also rely on my sorority sisters, in varying stages of life, to crowdsource perspective and wisdom. Q: WHAT ESCAPE FROM ROUTINE DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO MOST? A: Exercise has become a real treat lately. Taking a Saturday morning to shut myself off, to read and get a manicure, is like a vacation. When my husband, Olin, isn’t traveling we may enjoy a cabernet to get the conversation started on our back patio, after the boys are in bed. Q: WHY WILLIAMSBURG? A: Growing up with the tourism roots of BVI, I love the energy that comes with a smaller community feel. Having two boys (9 and 12), with sports and familiar faces, we form a network of families that seem harder to find in a bigger city.

CARLANE PIT TMAN DIRECTOR OF MBA PROGRAMS, WILLIAM & MARY Q: WHO IS A STRONG PERSONAL OR PROFESSIONAL INFLUENCE? A: My sister, Chadra, always personified a more “Hear me roar!” type of attitude. Her sense of fashion and selection of extra curriculars were inspiring. She now directs her passions toward her nonprofit, 4E.V.E.R. (End Violence End Rape) by embodying the Sankofa African principles of our ancestors. Q: WHAT IS THE GREATEST ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN? A: The Golden rule, of “treating others how we would like to be treated” has always resonated with me. That message was forged in the Sunday school classroom, and reinforced by a loving mother. Q: ANY GUILTY PLEASURES? A: With a daily two hour commute, I cherish a peaceful run, or time to sit and crochet. I love creating, in a world where everything is available on demand.

Fast forward to 2017; Jared created Parkway Printshop after noticing a market void in the evolution of new processes that produces retail-ready garments. Parkway prints shirts for many local establishments including, restaurants, breweries, festivals, and small businesses. Catering their friend’s wedding, after a season of trial and error with their smoker was the first gig that started their award winning BBQ business. They both love interacting with the community and are grateful each and every day for the support they have received to dream together and grow their family business. What’s next for Matt and Nicole? Their goal is to move into a brick and mortar location while still using the food truck to provide catering as well as continue to cook at popular locations in Williamsburg, Richmond, and Newport News. Shortly after Matchsticks BBQ Co.’s food truck hit the road, Nicole started to brainstorm on ways to impact the community. She knew she wanted to direct efforts toward helping

OF DESIGN A QUICK STUDY OF DESIGN TO ELEVATE YOUR SPACE WITH AMY AHEARN

INTERIOR DESIGN IS THE BLENDED ART AND SCIENCE OF ENHANCING THE INTERIOR OF A STRUCTURE TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHIER AND MORE AESTHETICALLY PLEASING ENVIRONMENT FOR THE PEOPLE USING THE SPACE. Amy Ahearn is a “change agent” in her Williamsburg based firm, Decorating Den Interiors. She views her profession as having a responsibility to not only lead trends but spot them before they break. Her professional radar is tracking the emerging field of Wellness. While she claims not to be a subject matter expert, a few minutes of discourse with her may have her audience thinking otherwise. In the interior design process, as changes are identified, they are in a response to a pain or inability to meet a need. People are pursing peace, focus, solitude, and mitigating anxiety disorders all by changing the space they occupy. Simply working from home requires creating the best environment to complete necessary tasks well. Living space that is designated for schooling or professional development becomes viewed through a different lens, and means something entirely new to us. Amy asks thoughtful questions of a client at their first consultation to distinguish the clients’ actual needs and wants versus perceived needs and wants. 28

“Are they taking care of elderly parents? Are they asthmatic or arthritic?” Questions like these reveal a myriad of lifestyle factors to consider. Determining whether noise or light pollution are affecting the space in a negative way will help determine what materials may be employed to correct the issue, or what existing ones are contributing to the disturbance. “There is a lot more to Wellness than just white paint, light, and moving a few plants around,” Amy states. Wellness is a by-product of Biophilic Design, which focuses on the blending of nature, and natural elements into an environment. The practice entreats a connection to nature, and has dated back to the earliest history of mankind. From the simplest solutions, such as cozy blankets, candles, plant life, or a water feature to radiant floor heating, touchless faucets, towel warmers, and steam showers they are all intended to enhance the individual wellness and comfort for the intended use of the space. PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

DIY (CONTINUED)

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a win-
