DID YOU NOTICE DURING THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS THE THREE MAJOR GLOBAL FAITHS ALL CELEBRATED HOLIDAYS? Christians had Easter. Jews celebrated Passover. Muslims had Ramadan.

The convergence of religious traditions with the horrors of the times is certainly not unique but given that we experienced this recently in a time of pandemic certainly gave me pause. As luck would have it, I heard a story on public radio focusing on the interfaith work of Eboo Patel, a Chicago-based author, speaker, educator and interfaith leader. On this very topic here was what Patel observed: “These three periods of holiness {occurred} within days of each other this year, as {did} sacred events for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Bahais. Collectively they carry a common message: the cosmic calendar calls us to renewal, forever changing the way

“We need to see that this is not just a civic good for our nation but the sacred duty that we are all performing now for each other and ourselves.” It is likely that when we get past the worst of the pandemic, we will experience a new normal. When that day comes, let us try to remember the silver linings that shone brightest during the darkest days. GIVING BACK

A DAY F O R DA D

THE SIGNIFICANT ROLE FATHERS PLAY IN THEIR CHILDREN’S LIVES COVERS SUCH A RANGE. A dad is an essential role model; an influencer of a child’s self-esteem and performance in the classroom; a great coach and fun-loving playmate. Once kids have grown, fathers are great friends, confidants, and someone there to lend a hand. Father’s Day is June 21, so don’t be caught scrambling for the perfect way to show that you care. Try some of these ideas to make your dad knows he’s special. VIDEO SURPRISE During a time of self-containment this might be a great time to make a “World’s Best Dad” video he’ll treasure for years to come. Share special memories of your dad, sing to him, read him a poem, or do a skit. Get the whole family involved and conduct interviews with each other with Dad as the main topic. Don’t forget props, such as a banner or collection of his prized possessions, including sports trophies or equipment, to add a personal touch. Let him know just how much he means to you. MEMORIES OF DAD Make a scrapbook full of memories about you and your dad. Include photos of special outings, events, and holidays you’ve had together. Also include memorabilia such as concert or sporting event ticket stubs, postcards, and brochures. Next to each photo or item, describe your memories of those special times with him. A MAN TO REMEMBER Get your creative juices flowing to write a poem for your dad. You don’t need to be a poet to come up with a few thoughtful words to express how much he means to you. Describe the impact he’s had on your life, how he’s helped shape the person you are today, and what he means to you. Then print it on stationery, and matte and frame it. MUSICAL MOMENT Create a playlist of dad’s favorite music. Since it’s hard now to take him to see his favorite band, use Spotify, Pandora or Apple Music to create his very own Dad Rock or Yacht Music playlist. 8

MAKE THIS FATHER’S DAY ONE HE’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER

“ I t d o e s n’ t m a t t e r who my father was; it matters who I remember h e w a s .” A n n e S e x t o n

TOGETHERNESS TAKES TWO Has your dad been putting off the dreaded task of cleaning out the attic, basement or garage? Do a little online research to give him a gift of shelving materials and brackets, wall racks and ceiling hooks, and storage crates. When the time is right, commit to spend the day helping him to get it organized while catching up on old times. WORLD’S GREATEST Let your dad know he’s valued 365 days a year! Give him a “World’s Greatest Dad” coffee mug, t-shirt, hat, wallet card, or another trinket that he’ll see or use regularly. FATHER’S DAY FEAST As the adage goes, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Treat dad to a mouth-watering meal ordered from a nearby family-owned restaurant. And don’t forget to include his favorite beverage, and dessert. JUST THE TWO OF US Put together a photo collage of you and your father. There are many ways to do this. Find instructions at your nearby craft store and create a Decoupage photo collage. Keep it simple with a multi-photo frame, or buy a unique 3D photo collage frame. A GIFT OF GIVING Does your dad have a favorite cause or charity such as the Humane Society, the Nature Conservancy, or the American Cancer Society? If so, why not give him a membership, or make a donation in his name? Remember, small donations ARTICLE KIMBERLY BLAKER

Brick patio with fire pit, next to the pond.

WHEN I ASKED THE CURRENT OWNERS OF THE REMARKABLE PROPERTY FOR SALE AT 462 W. OAKWOOD IN THE TIMBERLAKE COMMUNITY NORTH OF BARRINGTON TO SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE NEIGHBORHOOD, THEY EXUBERANTLY RESPONDED. “It’s amazing! Timberlake is a great private lake community with a mix of long term residents who are now empty nesters and families with school aged children. It’s a great place to be social: private lake with lifeguards, Easter Bunny and Santa come to the lake, 4th of July neighborhood party, corn roast, “book” (wine) club for ladies, and more are all available—or you can skip it all and just enjoy the quiet. It’s tucked back in on a quiet street, but accessible to main roads for shopping within 5 minutes. It’s also in the muchsought-after 220 school district; our kids attend North Barrington Elementary, Station Middle School and Barrington High School.” My own on-line tour of this stunning brick home via ReneeClarkHomes.com (search for 10696411) was thorough and impressive, showing stunning views of the adjoining tranquil pond from many rooms through walls of windows facing the expansive back yard. Subsequently confirmed via live visit its setting is Great room with fireplace and view of the pond.

beautiful and serene, offering an array of outdoor seasonal amenities just feet from the home’s back door (ice skating, hockey, swimming, paddle boating, kayak/canoeing, and fishing, via the subdivision’s lake/beach rights). Relax on the back deck or paver patio

among the trees, or chill on the pretty front porch. The front entrance opens into a large foyer with a spacious living room/office and grand dining room. The gourmet kitchen features highend appliances, custom cabinetry and gorgeous granite counters with ample table space and a large “baker’s island”. The owners’ favorite memories? “The pond has gifted us endless memories with our kids over our 10 years here. From the serenity of looking at the water over a fire, and so many s’mores, to catching frogs, fishing, kayaking, and ice skating it is the stuff lifelong memories are made of. We loved opening the windows in the spring and listening to the frogs sing us to sleep too!” Asked what they would miss most about the home, they replied, “A lot! The square footage—more than enough, but it doesn’t feel impersonal. We could be together within earshot if we wanted, or far enough away from each other that we could space. And the 3-car garage…So much space! We wish we could’ve stayed just for the heated, enormous garage...seriously!” For more information on this special home (listed at $594,000) contact Renee Clark at 847.612.0027 or renee@ReneeClarkHomes.com. LAKE BARRINGTON ARTIST DONATES TIME AND TALENT TO CREATE ART TO HELP LOCAL CHARITY 22

SW Lake Lifestyle | June 2020

IT SEEMED A PERFECT MATCH: RUSS RIENDEAU AND PARTNERS FOR PROGRESS. Why? Russ created a remarkable montage of vintage leather & buckles, equestrian tack mounted on a richly stained ancient piece of deeply grained cedar. He sent a photo one day asking, “What do you think?” Admittedly, I’d put this aside as an onslaught of workfrom-home emails piled up above his. The artist is persistent. He caught me at a moment when I was taking a deep breath. “If you’re like me you’re super busy right now, so I’m just checking in,” Russ said. “I’m thinking I should give this away. Any ideas?” Without hesitation I recommended Partners for Progress (PFP), the therapeutic equestrian center on Milton Road north of Hawthorn Woods. Russ replied, “Yeah, I know that place.” What a place it is, too. The PFP team provides a goal-based therapeutic riding program for children, adults and veterans with disabilities, delivering safe and effective intervention using skilled therapies and equine programs. Their therapeutic evaluations/assessments effectively match each client’s specific needs with best-fit programs. Shown on the cover of this month’s SW Lake Lifestyle, Russ’ piece (“Spirit of the Saddle”) is now available through an online fundraising campaign PFP is conducting. To learn more, visit PartnersForProgressNFP.org.

the artist explains ANTIQUE EQUESTRIAN TACK ON SALVAGED CEDAR + Dimensions: 16”x 28” “Each piece shown had a distinct form and function.” “The elements, now assembled on ancient red cedar, represent the simplicity and beauty of the leather.” “It’s the final celebration of respect and spirit that only a rider and their horse understand.” Artist: Russ Riendeau (2020)

“I’d stumbled on a retired western saddle from the 1930s, made by Sears & Roebuck,” Russ explained. “I’ve worked with many other leathers and other salvaged materials, but never with vintage equestrian tack. As I curiously disassembled the saddle, I discovered not only the craftsmanship of the saddler, but also the raw, natural beauty and depth to the leather. So rich with history, I could sense how such intimate connections form with rider and equine.” CityLifestyle.com/SWLake

Av o i d Financial Scams from C OV I D -1 9 FEARS FROM CORONAVIRUS BROUGHT OUT THE BEST AND WORST. BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR FINANCIAL CHICANERY.

ON ONE HAND, THE CORONAVIRUS BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN US. People across the country pitched in to help others, from

ARTICLE MARK HORNOK

providing protective masks for health care workers to simply buying gift cards to support local businesses. On the other hand, some bad actors sought to take advantage of the situation to try to defraud people. How can you guard against these virus-related scams? First, watch out for appeals from fake charities. You can find many legitimate groups working to help those afflicted from the illness. Also, ignore any offers for products claiming to prevent or cure the virus. When a real vaccine is available, you’ll hear about it. And you might encounter offers for “risk-free” investments that can help you get through this period of market volatility. But all investments carry risk. Stick with a long-term strategy that’s appropriate for your needs. Finally, warn your elderly relatives about potential scams. The elderly are always the most vulnerable to fraud. By taking the proper precautions, you can avoid being victimized by scammers. So, stay alert.
