to be like and look like. We take a glance back at where we have been and what we have done, and we try to remember to extend ourselves grace, sometimes much easier than it sounds. January is a time to cleanse, to start fresh and not dwell on who we were 12 months ago. So much change can happen in a year. So, as we plan our future and commit to resolutions, we also leave some room to change our minds—to grow and be human. Here at Green Hills/Belle Meade Lifestyle, we are coming to terms with the tremendous growth in our community this past year and are happy to feel as if we are maintaining our identity. We all await what is coming for 2020. As new businesses open, old businesses expand, charities fundraise and we all turn one year older, we will continue to be right there to share your stories and celebrate your milestones.

THE DAY IS COMING TO A TPAC EVENING JANUARY 18TH THE DAY is coming, an evening of exquisite art. Co-presented by OZ Arts Nashville and TPAC in partnership with Nashville Ballet, THE DAY fuses music and dance created by some of the world's leading artists: cellist Maya Beiser, dancer Wendy Whelan, choreographer Lucinda Childs and composer David Lang. The experience provides an exploration of two journeys— life and the eternal voyage of the soul. The New York Times calls the work "A gut punch . . . nothing short of life itself: by turns hopeful, funny, surprising and tragic."
Lisa prides herself on her client focused service and a tough work ethic. Her drive and determination also make her a tough negotiator. Taking the utmost care of her clients, and working with colleagues to arrive at a ‘win-win’ for all parties comes naturally to this busy mom of two teenage boys. She often jokes that her job title ought to be, “problem solver.” As the saying goes, if you want to get something done, ask a busy person. TURNER COCKRELL LEFT AN IMPRESSION, EVEN IN HIS ABSENCE. And so on Christmas Day 2018, when the Vanderbilt football team should have been celebrating Christmas, or preparing for the upcoming Texas Bowl, it was still mourning Cockrell’s death 27 days earlier. The team was visiting Houston’s Anderson Cancer center—where Cockrell was treated for melanoma—and talking with his former doctor, Amy Hassan, and that’s when Cody Markel an idea. “When I was there, I was was thinking, ‘Oh my, it would be so cool to do something along the lines of cancer research and honor Turner,” Markel says. Out of that thought came Turner’s Heroes, a non-profit foundation that helps children with cancer. Markel is the foundation’s executive director. He and Cockrell played the same position (tight end) at VU. They were roommates and close friends. Markel is brilliant—he made

Turner’s Heroes embodies the spirit of how Cockrell fought the disease. Elements of its mission include “to provide patients at children’s hospitals a means of escape and enjoyment,” “to provide unique and special superhero-themed opportunities for patients and their communities,” and “to raise funds for pediatric cancer research.”
Surgery and radiation treatments followed. Still, Cockrell rarely

“And they just told me ‘Hey, we hit [the goal] within the game,’” he says. “And that was not something I wasn’t expecting.” The foundation’s impact is felt in other ways. “I think my favorite story is still from our first event,” Markel says. “One of the moms of one of the patients came up to me and she said, ‘We’ve been here for 18 days. And this is one of the first times I’ve seen my daughter truly happy, smiling and giggling. “To take them away from everything that’s going on and being able to hang out with us… even something as simple as designing capes with us, that was something that filled them with so much joy. … That made seven months of work completely worth it, just that small conversation.”
“One of the moms of one of the patients came up to me and she said, ‘We’ve been here for 18 days. And this is one of the first times I’ve seen my daughter truly happy, smiling and giggling.” The healing works both ways. Cockrell is never far from the minds of his former teammates, several of whom volunteer for events. “It’s hard not to think about him and kind of sad because it is what it is,” Markel says. “But being able to do good out of that tragedy, it just makes you feel like you’re honoring him and makes you feel like you’re connecting with him and something that’s really special.” So, what would Cockrell think if he could see this? “I think honestly, the first thing he’d say is,’ Why are you doing this for me?’” Markel says. “This is kind of who he was. He probably wouldn’t think that. I mean, he did deserve something like like this after after he passed. But he would love it and he would really enjoy volunteering with us, especially with the cape events. “And I think this is exactly what he would want in the end.” 16

MUSICIAN NICK PELLEGRINO ONCE AGAIN PERFORMS FOR A PACKED HOUSE. As the crowd dances, their arms waving, their faces beaming, Nick hops up on his stage -- a kitchen counter. He rests his knees next to the knives to peer through the warming lights at the people partying below. Already the ice has been broken. Already those who sat down as strangers for the family-style feast have learned a few new names of folks at their table. Now they are up and moving to the music. And that’s just after the appetizers and the salad. The main courses have yet to be served. That’s when Nick and his talented team will really get the place cooking. Benvenuti a Mangia! Welcome to Mangia -- an Italian dining and cultural experience from which guests emerge not just full -- but fulfilled. “What I enjoy the most are the relationships that form here,” Nick shares. “I can’t tell you how many people have come here as strangers to each other and have come back as friends.” And come back they do. For eight years now, the weekend celebrations, prix fixe, ticket only affairs, consistently sell out. Talent and teamwork explain much of Mangia’s success, but the recipe also called for a generous cup of serendipity. That came years ago when Nick, a professional musician who had grown up on Staten Island in an Italian-American family, traded guitar lessons for cooking lessons from his best friend who had graduated from the Culinary Institute of America. “He even made me put the chef jacket on,” Nick recalls. “He was like, ‘If you’re going to learn this, you’re going to do it the right way.” Nick clearly learned his friend’s lessons. By 2011, burnt out from his music career, Nick conceived the Mangia concept, a family-style, Italian “pop-up” dining experience. CONTINUED >

Green Hills Lifestyle | January 2020
It began in Franklin with many of Nick’s friends from the music industry in attendance and proved an instant success, earning Nick the nickname “The Godfather of Pop Ups.” Moving soon thereafter to the current location in Melrose, Nick introduced Nashville’s first ristorante and focacceria, offering fresh Italian fare along with his signature homemade rosemary garlic and black carbon focaccia breads. Nick’s outstanding team, more like family to each other -- they split all tips and share staff meals, is another reason for Mangia’s supreme success. For example, if Nick is the Godfather of Pop Ups, then Rachael Lunsford, his general manager since 2011, is most definitely his consigliere. A tour-de-force, Rachael is the point person for the evening, making the patrons offers they could refuse in theory, but no one ever wants to. “We get everybody up out of their seats and dancing,” Rachael says with a confident grin. But first she has to get everybody eating and, for that, there are a few rules first. (Nothing personal, it’s strictly business.) Rachael strides into the room’s center, as packed as the streets of Little Italy on San Gennaro Day, and easily commands the attention of some 120 guests. “Eat off the top plate as each course is served,” she instructs, referring to the stack of plates arranged like nested Russian dolls at each patron’s place. “And keep your silverware throughout the evening because we ain’t doing that bring-five-forks-and-spoonsand-knives to everybody stuff.” And then it’s on, an evening of antipasti and insalata. Of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Of eating and drinking and laughing and dancing and memory making. As the primo and secondo courses pile upon the patrons’
