Not only are you surrounded by more salt than you've ever seen in one place, but you are both breathing in micronized salt particles as well as being coated by these fine granules. The mechanism behind everything we do is an osmotic transfer, salt pulling water to it. This process can help to alleviate the symptoms of many respiratory issues along with a few skin conditions. TREND SETTER

suavs is going green this year THE MOST VERSATILE, COMFORTABLE AND STYLISH SHOE WITH 100% RECYCLED KNIT

IT’S OFFICIAL: THE PERFECT SHOE FOR YOU TO EXPLORE THE WORLD IN, IS DOING GOOD FOR IT TOO. The sneakers, which are lightweight and able to be packed flat, makes SUAVS the ideal go-to travel shoe for men and women. Its breathable and sweat-wicking material allows you to do anything and go anywhere. Whether you are hiking mountains, walking city streets or just running errands around town, this sustainable shoe is perfect for you. “Our customer feedback on comfort and style is so positive, we thought what more can we do to hold ourselves accountable in working our way towards decreasing our carbon footprint and becoming a more conscious brand?,” said Monxi Garza, CEO of SUAVS.

28

Austin Life | April 2020

Each pair of SUAVS will be made with an average of 8 post-consumer recycled plastic bottles and 100% vegan materials by the end of the year. The Legacy high tops are the first of its kind to roll out, but all new launches and current SUAVS styles will be made with sustainable materials in 2020. Garza said the Legacy sneaker looks like a boot, fits like a sneaker and feels like a sock. Its new wider toe box and stitched sole allow for greater comfort and durability, especially in varying terrains and weather conditions. The brand will continue to expand its sustainable practices by donating all unsold SUAVS shoes to organizations, including Soles4Souls and LifeWorks, reducing material wastes throughout the manufacturing process and by creating dual purpose shoe boxes. “It’s a matter of accountability. Making changes for sustainability has to happen now,” Garza said. The shoes’ modern style reflects the modern and conscious consumer. As a customer-first brand, SUAVS’ customers dictate what it creates. “Consumers around the world are becoming more conscious about their choices with good reason,” Garza said. “As a consumer, I became more conscious about the products I consume and purchase, and thought our brand should reflect this shift.” Even with SUAVS’ sustainable mission, style is not sacrificed. The SUAVS team has been sourcing ecofriendly materials for years. “Once we found a knit that was just as durable, comfortable and fashionable, we made the switch,” Garza said. The ultra-versatile shoe remains ultra-versatile. Garza promises you can do at least three daily activities in SUAVS shoes. They are easy and transitional shoes that you can wear from day to night without worrying about any fashion faux pas. Style SUAVS casually with shorts and a t-shirt or dress them up with a sleek pair of chinos or little black dress. “So, if you’re looking for your simple everyday shoe, we got you,” Garza said. nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil. CONTINUED >

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE (CONTINUED) While nutritionists can recommend average nutrient intake percentages for a population, those might not be entirely accurate for your body and what you need. If you don’t enjoy calculating and counting

every single gram you eat, you can just start with the recommended guidelines and make adjustments based on how you feel each day. If you are groggy and sluggish mid-day, look at how many carbohydrates you had in your lunch and see if you want to change anything about your lunch tomorrow. Here’s how to read nutrition labels so you can better keep track and know what you are eating.

Serving sizes can be confusing if you don’t know what an ounce of that food looks like. Look at “Servings Per

food. If you are eating a package of nuts as a snack, and you are not eating anything else with it, you may need a couple of packages to eat as many calories as you want for that snack. It’s not wrong to eat multiple servings! Focus on what your body needs.

You need a variety of vitamins in your day, so check the percentages and make sure you are getting lots of different nutrients. Vitamin C is great, but it is possible to have too much Vitamin C and neglect Vitamin A. Calcium and iron are important for strength and to avoid injuries, so make sure you get enough of those each day as well. An easy trick is to try eating a vegetable of every color each day.

Carbohydrates are broken down by dietary fiber and sugar. To feel fuller longer and to have a clear mind and avoid getting foggy, choose carbohydrates, such as wild rice, that have more dietary fiber and less sugar.
