January is a time to cleanse, to start fresh and not dwell on who we were 12 months ago. So much change can happen in a year, so as we plan our future and commit to resolutions, we also leave some room to change our minds—to grow and be human. THE FINE DINING FRENCH RESTAURANT IN MEDINA WITH A MISSION TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Medina County Lifestyle | January 2020
THE MISSION SEEMS SIMPLE ENOUGH: TO EAT WELL AND TO DO GOOD. Sérénité Restaurant & Culinary Institute on West Liberty Street in Medina not only brings a new choice for locals to eat at a fine, quality restaurant, but also an incredible program for their employees. Sérénité was founded in March of 2018 by restauranteur Brandon Chrostowski–who is also the founder of EDWINS Leadership & Restaurant Institute in Shaker Square in Cleveland. The restaurant and culinary institute works with the Recovery Center of Medina County (RCMC) to provide long-term culinary training to those in the recovery community. Their goal is to instill leadership skills in men and women who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction through an education in the culinary arts. Student enrollment is open to anyone in the recovery community and students are paid and have full access to all of RCMC’s programs, case management, support systems and life-skills

“While dining, you will witness the power of a second chance and help change the perspective of what successful recovery looks like.” Sérénité that day because we had driven by it several times and we wanted to try something new. The story behind Sérénité Restaurant is truly a “feel good” story that I recommend you experience for yourself. Not only will you be able to enjoy a wonderful dinner, but more importantly, you will be able to support others in our community who are working hard on making a better life for themselves and their families.

MUSTARD SEED MARKET & CAFÉ, A LOCALLY OWNED AND FAMILY OPERATED BUSINESS IN AKRON, HAS BEEN IN THE PIONEERING BUSINESS FOR OVER 38 YEARS–THE PIONEERING OF NATURAL AND ORGANIC FOOD, TO BE EXACT. It all began in the spring of 1981 when Phillip and Margaret Nabors opened the original Mustard Seed. They began by selling much of what they offer today, just on a smaller scale. Items such as organic produce, locally-sourced meat and dairy, organic supplements and food products free of harmful chemicals and artificial ingredients were some of the things stocked on their shelves. This first location only had enough space for a market and Abraham Nabors, one of Phillip and Margaret’s two sons, as well as a second generation owner of Mustard Seed and Mustard Seed’s Director of Education and Standards, remembers that his mom used to make her meals in the backroom when she had to open and close the store. “She would make all of her meals in back–things like nori rolls that a lot of people had never seen or heard of before,” says Abraham. “Customers really took notice and eventually, her and my dad began offering cooking classes. That’s kind of how the idea for the café started.” In 1989, Mustard Seed relocated to a 36,000-squarefoot retail space on West Market Street in Akron, where it is still located today. This new space not only provides much more square footage, but has both an upper and lower level. “The lower level is the market, where we sell all of our natural products and supplements,” says Abraham. “And on the upper mezzanine level we have our café.” Phillip and Margaret’s knowledge and passion for healthy and organic food coupled with the many culinary talents of Karen Bender, Mustard Seed Market & Café’s Director of Culinary, fosters the creation of many delicious dishes. Although the café’s menu changes at least once each year, some of the their signature dishes will never be removed. Margaret’s famous carrot cake, prepared using the same recipe for over 30 years, is still a crowd favorite. Mustard Seed also offers full service catering that can be done on-site in their banquet rooms or offsite at a location of your choice. Whether you’re planning a corporate retreat or a small picnic in the park, they can provide catering for just about any occasion, no matter how big or small. From freshly made boxed lunches and party platters to a brunch buffet with a made-to-order omelette bar, Mustard Seed has a variety of catering options that are made with only the highest quality ingredients.

LOCALLY OWNED
H e a lt h y T e e t h f o r A l l Ag e s SINICK FAMILY DENTAL, A LOCALLY-OWNED AND OPERATED PRACTICE, OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE DENTAL CARE TO INDIVIDUALS OF ALL AGES, FROM TODDLERS TO THE WISEST AMONG US. Drs. Jessica and Christopher Sinick and the entire staff at Sinick Family Dental focus on providing preventative dental care, and are especially passionate about helping little ones stay cavity-free. Lately, they’ve noticed a rise in cavities among children. Refined sugars, juices and snacks are the leading culprits. Cavity causing bacteria are so small they only need a tiny bit of sugar to survive. Without immediate brushing, crackers are difficult to remove from the crevices of teeth. The remnants will sit there and break down into acid that softens and weakens the tooth’s natural structure. This becomes the perfect feeding ground for cavity forming bacteria. Dr. Jessica says, “I once had a colleague tell me that juice and Goldfish crackers were keeping him in business. These are exactly the things we want to educate our patients and their families on to avoid unnecessary visits to the dentist.” As parents themselves, Drs. Christopher and Jessica know it’s hard enough dealing with busy schedules, let alone, having to worry about dental infections in our young ones. Many people ask them, “When should I start bringing my child to the dentist?” The answer is one year old. This may seem early, but it sets the groundwork for a healthy dental atmosphere. For instance, the last thing you want to do is send your baby to bed with a bottle. Sending your child to bed with anything other than water can lead to cavities on most if not all of his or her teeth. This can happen very quickly–within a few months. Most of your child’s first appointments are spent educating parents and just simply looking for early signs of cavities. Another great question is, “When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?” You want to start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they begin coming in. If they are familiar with the tooth brush from a young

says there is no clear-cut answer because everyone is different, but as a general guideline it is pretty typical for patients to schedule one appointment per week for four to six weeks and then re-access the plan of action. Most times, a once-a-month visit for basic health and body maintenance is enough to keep her patients feeling better and balanced. Acupuncture and other Eastern medicine practices are slowly starting to work their way into the Western medicine world. Twenty or 30 years ago, acupuncture was a very misunderstood and unconventional practice. Today it is recognized as a valid and approved treatment and practice, and is covered on numerous insurance plans, including BlueCross BlueShield government employee plans. “We

Administration that allows veterans to come here for no out-of-pocket expense with a referral,” Shannon explains. “I see a lot of veterans for pain management, PTSD and a variety of other things.” Scientifically and physiologically, acupuncture works by triggering the brain to manufacture pain killers for a given area. Shannon adds, “I’m breaking the skin and that causes a well understood reaction within the body that Western medicine totally understands. Your body is releasing serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and endorphins. That is part of the normal healing cascade within the body that is well understood.” Besides helping and healing her patients naturally, without pills and invasive procedures, demystifying acupuncture and holistic healing practices is part of the bigger picture for Shannon.

“Physical Therapists have done a very good job of adding and promoting dry needling–which is similar, but not the same as acupuncture–to the healing process. We see this being promoted more across the board in Western medicine, which has in turn helped to demystify what it is that I do here for my patients."
Shine Acupuncture & Wellness is located at 805 E. Washington St., Ste. #230 in the Washington Park office complex. To learn more about the holistic healing services provided at Shine, visit ShineAcupuncture.com or call 330.242.5633 for information or to set up an appointment.
