COLUMBIANS TO PAY PLASTIC BAG FEE A bill permitting the imposing of a plastic bag use fee has passed by a 4-1 vote. The bill was sponsored by State Delegate Terri Hill, and introduced by Councilwoman Christiana Mercer Rigby and Councilman Opel Jones at the November 4th legislative session meeting. Proceeds from the five cents per bag fee would go into the Disposable Plastics Reduction Fund to be used for reusable bags, stream cleanups and other environmental cleanup initiatives. "I want to thank the over 700 Howard County residents who want to see single-use plastic reduced," Rigby said during her voting remarks Monday. "The fees do change consumer behavior. Why not do what you can where you can with what you can?"

AFFORDABLE HOUSING LEGISLATION FILED Howard County Councilmember Christiana Rigby introduced Council Bill 13-2020, the Affordable Housing Retention Act, at the Council’s legislative session on Monday, March 2. Co-sponsored by Councilmembers Opel Jones and Liz Walsh, the bill would provide the Department of Housing and Community Development and the Howard County Housing Commission with the first right to purchase rental housing at its final point of sale. “Currently there is a deficit of affordable housing units throughout our county,” said Councilmember Jones. “This legislation is truly essential to bolstering the county’s efforts to secure affordable housing units for our community’s most vulnerable residents.” Read the legislation here: https://cc.howardcountymd.gov/Legislation

GIVE IT A NEW LIFE ARTICLE ANIKA BATY MILLS

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE LIFE CYCLE OF A MAGAZINE AFTER YOU PLACE IT IN THE RECYCLE BIN… WHICH WE KNOW YOU ARE TOTALLY DOING. After its arrival at a recycling facility, magazines are then mixed with other paper received, then placed in a container filled with chemicals and water. From here they mulch the papers, heat and turn them into a pulp. The pulp is then run through a screen to remove any large debris. Once it is cleaned and de-inked, the pulp can become many things, paperboard, tissue, stationery, and writing paper. Here are a few ways to reuse our magazine. Our pages can be used to make Christmas trees, or origami bookmarks. Shredded magazine papers can be used as package cushioning. This is after you are done reading of course! Have fun!

The appeal of their blended style of music has led to some high energy shows both in the U.S. and abroad. "The Hamilton (in D.C.) is one of the first places that embraced and understood what we were going for," Turner states fondly. "We took a chance to travel to Israel and Brazil. Brazil had deep ties to the percussion of it. We didn't have to change anything because of the language barrier. We got right into the show and we understood each other.” The draw of the Brass-A-Holics sound resonated in Israel, despite warnings from the State Department at the time regarding travel to the region. Turner recalled, "We almost didn't book the show. An eight-piece ensemble and political tensions? It was a risk, an expansion, but the first show was absolutely electric. We didn't stop playing; from jam sessions to rehearsal, one show was almost all night. The appreciation for the fun let us know we had this thing going on that was unique." The group continues to fuse music styles, even alluding to future samples of New Orleans bounce in their work. In Columbia, we can appreciate that harmonious

diversity.

The

Brass-A-

Holics will play at The Soundry on the Lakefront, Saturday, April 4, their first time playing the venue. “I'm excited! It will be a combo of what we do normally and what the crowd likes. We want to keep them involved, give variety, a spin on it that brings it home,” says Turner.

“DEFINITELY GO-GO, TRUE TO THE CULTURE. IT HAS LONGEVITY, AND ORIGINALITY TO IT. “

ARTICLE ANIKA BATY-MILLS

BATON ROUGE Columbia Lifestyle mixed a little business with pleasure

and enjoyed an awesome trip to both Baton Rouge and New Orleans. We first arrived in the capital city of Baton Rouge and went to visit family who has lived in Baton Rouge in the same house for as long as I can remember. Remove the new porch and it looks exactly the same. The day was spent relaxing and catching up with family members was perfect. Often when traveling many of us don’t give ourselves time to put our feet up and relax. Knowing that the schedule is busy on the back end of our trip, we definitely took our time and enjoyed doing absolutely nothing. Catching up with family and resting fit the bill. We belly laughed, retelling old stories and reminiscing about family members who have passed. Happily, we ended the night with hugs and kisses and went straight to bed. I highly recommend to anyone whose life is always on the go, that day one of your trip, starts out unscheduled, and relaxed. It gives you the strength to enjoy day two.

+ day 2 Not sure if you heard, but the LSU Tigers are the NCAA Football National Champions beating the Clemson Tigers 45-25 this past January. Louisiana State University is extremely proud of the education that it offers to its students, but make no mistake, they are ridiculously proud of their LSU Tigers. Our cousins were excited to take us to see the beautiful campus, and eat some wonderful authentic Louisiana cuisine. Red beans and rice, blackened alligator, gumbo and anything else you can put in a good roux and enjoy. Char-grilled oysters are a new favorite food! Connected to the restaurant was a concert venue called the Varsity Theatre. The Rebirth Brass Band rocked the house! Trumpets, tubas, drums, saxophones, the list goes on. It was a great time to work off some of that gumbo…okay, all of the gumbo we enjoyed an hour before. If there is ever an opportunity to order the appropriately named Swamp Bucket from the bar, do it immediately. After dancing most of the night away they whisked us down the road to the sweet smell of sugar and chocolate. They introduced us to Insomnia Cookies. This is the wrong place to go after dinner and dancing and yet hit all the sweet notes just right. Red velvet, double chocolate chunk, and classic M&M’s, the list went on and on. They offered ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, and milk. How college students do this consistently was the question that we asked ourselves as we left with a box of cookies that we in no way intended to finish. That was how we ended our night and headed back to the comfortable beds that were waiting for us. It was now time to rest up for the hour drive to New Orleans.

TR AVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)

The Marriott Hotel is located on the famous Canal Street in the French Quarter. Get there early to beat the road closures for the upcoming pre-Mardi Gras parades. It was a beautiful day, and we planned to enjoy every minute. If the hotel permits check-in early, it will allow you time to wander the streets and see all there is to see in the quaint, busy shopping district. There are enough masks and beads to buy for every single one of your family and friends. There were even beads that represented the University of Maryland! Who knew? To find out where the best breakfast when traveling, ask the locals. The bellman recommended a wonderful restaurant in the Quarter and within walking distance called Mena’s Palace! They serve breakfast and lunch with variable closing hours. If you check it out, any omelet you see on the menu that intrigues you… order it! Maybe even venture out to try the Cajun Hash. It is a traditional homemade hash-brown mixed with Cajun Tasso. Pork that is cured, smoked with a spicy rub. It’s not too spicy and there are options for your topping. The food is rich, and so is the culture. Street performers entertain the masses, as blues and zydeco music flows from the stores begging passerby’s to come in. You can’t help but tap your feet as you walked by. The parades were in full swing by late morning and the beads were flowing. It was great to see all the marching bands and floats that passed by in what felt like a rhythm and flow that matched the city. And yes, Café DuMonde beignets are exactly as good as they look. However, never eat them cold, that is just “cooyon”.

detoxifying your skin THROUGHOUT HER EXPANSIVE CAREER, DERMATOLOGIST DR. Chesahna Kindred has demonstrated that beauty is far more than skin deep. Dr. Kindred’s love of education and healthcare has manifested into a career that spans across multiple industries and communities, including founder and president of the Onyx Medical Society and the leader of the Celebration Church Wellness Ministry. Raised in South Central Los Angeles, and growing up in Englewood, Dr. Kindred is no stranger to hard work. In 2007, Dr. Kindred and her husband, moved to the Columbia area and began her practice, and a family. Her commitment to spreading knowledge and acceptance throughout the Columbia community not only brings great value to the community but also great joy to her. “One of the best things about dermatology is the ability to witness the transformation and results immediately,” shares Dr. Kindred. “It’s amazing for someone to come into the office and know that we can help them feel and look their best. To find the root cause of whatever issue they face and work together to create a routine that works specifically for them”.

“You can see the difference in their faces when they take real steps to move forward and become their best self.” Dr. Kindred is one of three doctors to earn a dual MD/ MBA degree in her class, and conducted her residency at Howard Univeristy. This helped to center her focus on treating and reviving not only ethnic skin, but also ethnic hair. This focus led to the founding of Kindred Hair & Skin Center in Columbia, Maryland. The practice has an incredibly inclusive array of services, and the doctors are dedicated to providing health assistance to people of all body, hair and skin types. To maintain healthy skin and hair on a regular basis, Dr. Kindred recommends committing to a daily regimen that nurtures the body without introducing an abundance of chemicals and toxins. These contaminants can be cleansed with nontoxic tools, which can be found at retail stores as well as Dr. Kindred’s office. Exposure to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (also known as EDCs) are man-made chemicals commonly found within substances of everyday life, such as metals, pesticides, and certain toiletries. In the morning, Dr. Kindred suggests using Sulfo Lo, a special cleansing soap designed to deep clean the face and is effective for a variety of skin irritants and blemishes. The antioxidants are adept at reducing redness and evening the skin tone. For a thorough rejuvenation of the skin, Kindred Hair & Skin additionally offers a skincare procedure called HydraFacial, MD. Simultaneously, there is an intense infusion of serums to tighten and plump the skin. Dr. Kindred’s process stands apart from other HydraFacial programs by her expertise in a variety of skin types, offering a strict medical background that provides comfort to individuals wary of trying the technique. It is suggested to have this procedure done once a month.

nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil. CONTINUED >

every single gram you eat, you can just start with the recommended guidelines and make adjustments based on how you feel each day. If you are groggy and sluggish mid-day, look at how many carbohydrates you had in your lunch and see if you want to change anything about your lunch tomorrow. Here’s how to read nutrition labels so you can better keep track and know what you are eating.

Serving sizes can be confusing if you don’t know what an ounce of that food looks like. Look at “Servings Per

food. If you are eating a package of nuts as a snack, and you are not eating anything else with it, you may need a couple of packages to eat as many calories as you want for that snack. It’s not wrong to eat multiple servings! Focus on what your body needs.

You need a variety of vitamins in your day, so check the percentages and make sure you are getting lots of different nutrients. Vitamin C is great, but it is possible to have too much Vitamin C and neglect Vitamin A. Calcium and iron are important for strength and to avoid injuries, so make sure you get enough of those each day as well. An easy trick is to try eating a vegetable of every color each day.

30

Columbia Lifestyle | April 2020

Carbohydrates are broken down by dietary fiber and sugar. To feel fuller longer and to have a clear mind and avoid getting foggy, choose carbohydrates, such as wild rice, that have more dietary fiber and less sugar.

You are the best expert of you, and you get to make all of the final decisions for your body. Do your research, get all of the info that you can and then decide how you want to divide up your nutrition each day. One of the most effective things you can do is keep a log of your moods, how your skin looks, how your hair feels, your water intake and your energy levels. While your fitness goals are important, how you feel each day is so much more important. It’s easy to lose weight by dramatically cutting calories, but that can leave you feeling irritable with low energy, and it’s ultimately not worth it. Take care of yourself and think about how the choices you make will affect your health in the long run. And never forget that you are enough, just the way you are.
