“THIS IS OUR HOUSE AND A TREE AND A TULIP AND OUR POPE SCHOOL. Dear Daddy, All of us love you; Jennifer, Becka, Paul, Kelly…to Daddy…By !!!!!” This is the message that I read on Father’s Day, June 1973. It was written on a plain piece of white paper, with a child-like drawing of a hill, our house, a tree, a little flower and a school house. Dotted around these words are little drawings of flowers here and there. On the outside of the folded piece of paper it reads: “Happy Father’s Day.”

This was one of my Father’s Day cards created by my 7-year-old daughter, Jennifer. Years later, my youngest daughter, the publisher of this magazine, gave me a beautifully framed poem written by Ken Brown: “Delightful and loving, loved and admired, Dad, you’re my hero, my life you’ve inspired. And when all my blessings are counted each day, I thank God in heaven for Dad when I pray. Dad, thanks for your presence throughout thick and thin; You’re more than a parent, You’re my wonderful friend.”

TEXAS LEGENDS LAUNCH COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT SERIES
color services, done in 10 minutes, to keep customers’ roots looking fresh.
Texas Legends representatives launched a new series to shine a light on everyday heroes doing good in the community. The Community Spotlight opens with a glimpse at local utility company Coserv and their current efforts to help those hurting in the COVID-19 pandemic. In the midst of this great crisis, humanity has shown great heroism, whether that’s donated funds or goods, neighborly outreach or service efforts. The Legends wanted to use their platform to highlight these tales as positive rays in hard times. “Particularly in the times we’re in right now, we feel like you can turn on the news and see nothing but negativity,” says Legends President/General Manager Malcolm Farmer. “We’re surrounded by stress and hardship, and we wanted to give people something to smile about, to tell those stories of the good happening in the midst of it all.”

ART BY MILESSA LAUNCHES 'A PAINTING A DAY' As a self-employed fine art artist, Milessa Murphy Stewart says she had to transfer some time from brushstrokes to online marketing. In response to the pandemic, she initiated a marketing campaign on her "Art By Milessa" Facebook page on which she posted "A Painting A Day "(30 total of them for April) of someplace in Frisco, Plano or Dallas. She specifically shared images that people could visit or teach their kids about, such as sculptures, nature and the Dallas Arboretum. See more of her modern impressionist work at Milessa.com. She says in many ways, life is lacking in opportunity right now, given the global pandemic. “However, times like these can provide some opportunities, and one of those opportunities is in art. Art can communicate many things about personal vision and emotion, but it also communicates experience,” she reminds.

Fire Chief Mark Piland is also the emergency management coordinator for Frisco. He also was able to put his master’s degree in public health to good work in this case. “Initially, we followed CDC protocols, which

evolved almost every other day,” he says. The chief shares that they applied helpful lessons learned from the former ebola virus situation to get a jump on this novel coronavirus. Changes that have resulted are that screening starts with questions being asked by dispatchers when emergency calls are received. “We have to treat eveybody like a patient who potentially may have COVID-19. Only one paramedic goes in at a time to someone’s house, unless it’s a life threatening situation. We call patients from outside their homes and ask them to open the door and step inside 6 to 8 feet until the paramedic can do an evaluation,” Mark says. He says they have electronic tablets on their home calls through which they can deploy telemedicine with physicians bedside to determine if patients really should be transported. “Our paramedics and firefighters have done remarkably well with the situation and never waivered a bit,” says the chief. Mark says a couple of new practices will remain in the future: temperature checks and extra handwashing, even outside of the station before entering. “I’m optimistic. I know our hospitals have ample capacity in case there’s another spike. We need to closely watch the statistics. There is light at the end of the tunnel but we’re still in the tunnel,” says the chief. 18

frisco library At the onset of the pandemic lockdown, library services were quickly offered through virtual means to respond to the needs of Frisco community residents, along with offering enrollment to more online classes. Library Director Shelley Holley says they immediately pivoted to buying digital items for the library’s overall collection. “In February, we bought a few hundred e-books. In March, we purchased 2,000 e-books,” she adds. Shelley explains that they also renegotiated some of the contracts they have with online providers so they were able to offer homework help at more appropriate times of the day, “from 9 in the morning until 10 at night.” She says they put their holds on pause, so if patrons were in a queue for a physical item, they didn’t lose their place in the requests. “We focused on reaching out and communicating with the community. Programs that are widely popular in the building, such as STEM popups, were put online through video, and we started posting story times on Facebook,” says Shelley. Library cards are still available online, as well, and any digital library card secured can be immediately used to check out items. “We have the hardest working collection in Texas,” proclaims Shelley, pointing that their 200,000 items are each checked out 11 times per year, compared to the average across other Texas libraries being one time a year. She says they took this shelter-in-place period as a good time to reorganize their collections and to repair and refresh their individual items so they are in better shape when patrons return. 20

frisco independent school district Frisco
ISD
Superintendent
Mike
Waldrip says the district was fortunate to have many online tools already in place to leverage during eLearning. Teachers and administrators continue to use Remind for two-way text messaging while maintaining personal privacy. “Many teachers and counselors also started using Google Voice to enable phone conversations from home without sharing personal phone numbers. Many staff meetings are taking place on Zoom or Google Hangouts, and teachers are providing opportunities for students to connect with them, and other students, on these channels as well,” he says. “The transition to distance learning certainly is testing all of us. Our teachers miss their students like crazy. Education is a very hands-on activity, and everyone is missing that interaction,” the superintendent adds. “Many of our teachers are also parents, so they are juggling and wearing many hats while they work to support their students and deliver instruction in a new way. They worry about their students and their families. It’s hard for teachers to be away from the students who they built close relationships with all year,” he says.

Mike says they hear from hundreds of students daily who tell us how much they miss school, their teachers and friends. “Our campuses are finding unique ways to foster a sense of connectedness and school community, whether it’s a virtual spirit week or recorded video message. Some activities are just for fun to lift students’ spirits and allow them to communicate with each other in a positive, supportive online environment,” he states. Frisco ISD already was expanding online and blended learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs of students. Mike says this eLearning experience will make teachers and students more comfortable teaching in that environment. “In spite of all the challenges, the biggest positive to come out of all this is probably that it forced our teachers outside of their comfort zones. We’re constantly challenging our teachers to try new things and think about the skills students will need in the future and how to best build those skills. During eLearning, teachers have tried things they may not have considered previously. They’re making tweaks as they go and learning from it. It’s been a really exciting and refreshing thing to see as a school administrator, and our students will only benefit from it down the road,” says Mike. The superitendent says everyone has had to be patient and extend forgiveness and grace to others, and he hope that’s a lesson people don’t soon forget.

COOKIE SOCIETY This Frisco-based, boutique business started with an intervention regarding butter purchases. Marissa Allen, wife of former NFL player Jeff Allen, says he started asking questions about her butter purchases and her obsession with making cookies — which she gave away to the mailman, friends and teachers. His offhanded comment about selling cookies sparked a sweet business idea in 2016. But, having the courage to launch brickand-mortar business on April 18 during the COVID-19 pandemic was also something pretty spectacular.

The COVID 19 virus has caused a lot of sorrow in families. Loved ones were lost due to COVID and other illnesses. In each case families were separated during hospitalization. Communities, businesses and government has reached out to help those in need, as our American Spirit shone through this dark time. We were designed with the Gift of Hope, and in this time and times to come we must follow the path of trust, faith and hope.

PARTING THOUGHTS
Corners of the Heart ORDINARY PEOPLE ANSWERING IN EXTRAORDINARY WAYS ARTICLE KEVIN WESTERFIELD
I KNEW WHEN I FIRST MET KEVIN THAT HE TRULY WAS A MAN WITH A KIND HEART. Through this inspirational and heart-felt message, I know you will feel the same. Standing strong together is most definitely shining bright in Frisco. We are better together. Frisco Strong. ~Becka Mother Teresa once said, “There is a light in this world, a healing spirit more powerful than any darkness we may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force when there is suffering, too much pain. Then suddenly, the spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.” This story is about strength of our communities, families and nation. Frisco Strong. Through all negative headlines, tragic stories and heartbreaks, we continue to rise. I’ve witnessed firsthand many stories you won’t read in the news. Ordinary people who hear the call to support neighbors and friends, and answer in extraordinary ways. The meal and food baskets delivered to first responders. The florist that continues to pay workers during shutdown out of her own pocket. The auto repair shop that fixes a single mom’s car for free because she didn’t have money for repairs. The list is long. As a young man growing up in Chicago’s South Side, there were many opportunities to get discouraged, get in the trap of poor decisions and distractions. I was blessed by the inspiration and guidance of so many “ordinary” people. It all starts with family, friends, teachers and other individuals in the community. This was my community, my foundation. When there was tragedy, we reached out. When there was pain, we comforted. When there was someone hungry, we fed them. When someone needed inspiration, it was given. That was our spirit. As a 20-year resident of Frisco, I’m happy to announce the spirit to answer the call is alive-and-well in Frisco and our surrounding communities. Remember the words of Mother Teresa: ”Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” We’re all in this together. Frisco Strong.
