Are the Holidays Still Meaningful? WHEN THE CALENDAR YEAR STARTS WINDING DOWN TO ITS LOGICAL CONCLUSION, THE HOLIDAYS ENSUE. In some sense it’s too bad that Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas & New Year’s Day are such a mash-up crammed in ungainly fashion into just 33 days this year.

Given the year we’ve had, we’ll take it. Knowing what’s coming up, let’s enjoy the holidays more than ever. Many of us gather on Christmas in thanks for the birth of Jesus Christ or to celebrate Hanukkah’s miracle of the day’s supply of oil that lasted for eight days. We’ll get caught up in all kinds of other activities: decorating for the holidays, planning family gatherings, shopping, seeing family and friends, creating and checking off lists, and perhaps, taking a little time off to decompress. In a perfect world the holidays give us a time to gather, celebrate, break bread,

AROUND TOWN
(CON TI N UED)
DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE IN LONG GROVE While it seems downtown Long Grove has been “under construction” forever, many of the significant projects are nearing completion, reports Lake County Board Member Craig Taylor. Most recently contractors have backfilled topsoil, reinstalled brick pavers, installed the traffic signal and new streetscaping and relocated mailbox clusters in the vicinity of Old McHenry and Robert Parker Coffin roads. Other improvements include final connections of storm drains and fire hydrant and valve box adjustments.
WINTER SPORTS SEASON UNDERWAY IN LAKEWOOD FOREST PRESERVE Though regular Lake County Forest Preserve hours are 6:30 am to sunset, illuminated trails and adjacent parking lots will remain open after sunset until 9 pm, daily, through Sunday, March 8, 2020. Bicycle and equestrian traffic is not permitted on the lighted trails after sunset. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed. To access the lighted trails, park at Lakewood Winter Sports Area on the east side of Fairfield Road just south of Route 176, or at Old School's main entrance lot on the east side of St. Mary's Road just south of Route 176. Lake County Forest Preserve Rangers regularly patrol the areas.
HAWTHORN WOODS HOMETOWN HOLIDAY Usher in the holidays at this free December 7 event, the first annual Hometown Holiday at Hawthorn Woods Community Park. Formed in 2007, the Oak Ridge
was to ensure native plants would endure for years to come. Awaiting the scouts that morning was new seed collecting equipment, courtesy of a grant from the Vital Lands Grants program, a division of the Grand Victoria Foundation. Seed collecting aprons and specialized hand pruners were purchased using grant funds for use by volunteers during the busy autumn season. “This grant came at just the right time,” says Ancient Oaks Foundation (AOF) President Judi Thode. “Autumn is the time of year that we collect native grass and flower seeds for distribution to areas that have been cleared of invasive buckthorn. Native woodland seeds are expensive to purchase at retail cost so collecting seeds that are readily available is an economical solution.” One area where these collected seeds will be planted is at the new Kuechmann Arboretum on Old Rand Road. For the past five years, AOF volunteers, in partnership with the Village of Lake Zurich, have been clearing invasive species from this rare 9-acre oak woodland. Replanting native grass and flower seeds that had been lost to the shade caused by buckthorn will help restore the ecological health of the woodland. Improved diversity of plants

provides food, shelter and breeding areas for wildlife. Along with removing invasive plants and replanting native plants, the Foundation has also mentored several scout projects at the arboretum. The addition of an asphalt drive, completion of invasive plant removal and placement of informational signage will culminate in a grand opening, tentatively scheduled for Spring of 2020. The Village of Lake Zurich is graced with a unique set of natural circumstances. Its springfed lake and hilly topography were formed by Ice Age glaciers over 10,000 years ago. Its oak savannas and wetlands are witnesses to thousands of years of history. The village owns several natural areas from the rare oak woodlands, Oak Ridge Marsh Nature Park and Kuechmann Park, to the high-quality wetland at Old Mill Grove Park. But the diversity of these parks is being lost. Invasive weeds such as buckthorn and honeysuckle, along with a lack of prescribed burns are taking their toll. Encroachment of invasives onto private property decreases property values and causes removal expenses for homeowners. For more information about the valuable role played locally by the Ancient Oaks Foundation, be sure to visit AncientOaksFoundation.org.

FORSYTHIA Named after William Forsyth, a Scottish botanist, Forsythia is an early spring flowering shrub often found in gardens and parks. Forsythia are well-known for their resilience and tenacity as much as the bright, cheery yellow of the branches’ blooms.
RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.
TWEEDIA This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slipper-shaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait—in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.
NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.
KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring.

A TRIBUTE TO FRANK SINATRA’S 104TH BIRTHDAY
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON
“LET’S MAKE SURE WE MOVE THE PIANO BACK EXACTLY HOW IT WAS WHEN WE CAME IN; WE WANT TO BE SURE WE’RE GOOD CITIZENS,” SAID RON HAWKING, AS WE FINISHED OUR INTERVIEW AND PHOTO SHOOT AT BARRINGTON’S WHITE HOUSE. Item one with Ron: the “really nice guy” part grabs you right at “Hello.” Toss in his irrepressible enthusiasm, rich baritone voice and knack for choosing musical classics that age like the finest wine, and well—hey, where can I buy a ticket? Fortunately, that’s an easy answer—at BarringtonsWhiteHouse.com, for either of his two upcoming shows there: December 7, 7:30 p.m. and December 8, 3:00 p.m. Both shows are a special celebration of Frank Sinatra’s 104th birthday—including selections from Ron’s hit musical productions of “His Way—A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra” and his Grammy-Nominated album “The Song Is You.” To honor the season, he plans to include highlights from his “Home for the Holidays” Christmas show. Select numbers in his performance will also feature original NBC recordings from “His Way” (one of Chicago’s longest-running and most beloved tribute shows) mixed in seamlessly live with the performers on stage. Ron’s been swinging it and bringing it live since his pre-school years and his television debut on the Morris B Sachs Amateur Hour. Ron’s parents, enthusiastic amateur musicians themselves (dad played trumpet, mom loved to sing), nurtured his precocious early start in entertainment. After performing with various bands through high school and college, Ron toured with the group The New Era, with whom he recorded two albums. Returning to Chicago, Ron directed his efforts toward the recording studio. As Chicago’s commercial music producers took notice, Ron went from singing and playing with his band in nightclubs to singing in the recording studio on countless broadcast commercials for television and radio. In addition to becoming one of the “top-call” studio singers in Chicago, Ron started receiving calls from Detroit, New York, Nashville, and L.A. music producers as well, and a long-running career took full flight, a journey that’s included a role as a sports announcer in the movie Mr. Hawking's upcoming pair of shows is a celebration of Frank Sinatra's 104th birthday.
“The Express” with Dennis Quaid. To hone his performance chops even further Ron studied improvisation, first at Chicago’s Second City and later at The Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Returning to Chicago in 1985, he launched a new act as a singer and impressionist, which led to many years of performances at corporate events, as well as more studio work recording voiceovers for radio and television commercials. (He’s the voice on several national-brand commercials currently running.) Ron recalls that work fondly. “Each time I was in the studio recording for different products and projects it was like a new show.” Asked for a special performance memory, Ron recalled that at both the Mercury and NBC Theaters audience members had contacted him in advance asking if they could propose to their future spouse during his concert. Both times he brought them onstage, where post-proposal the happy couples danced to Ron’s version of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” A local resident for over two decades, Ron is excited to again bring his music back to the Barrington White House in the town where his wife and both their kids grew up and went to school. Although there might not be any live proposals on stage, we trust there will be plenty of engagement going on as Ron brings his best to Barrington’s White House to celebrate Ol’ Blue Eyes. Here’s what clients are saying... “We heartily endorse Renee Clark to anyone looking to buy or sell a house in Lake County. Renee helped us buy our home in Gurnee 8 years ago, traipsing all over the county, and then sell our home for top dollar this summer, while helping us negotiate around a couple of tricky inspection repairs. We have recommended Renee to several friends who have had similar positive experiences over the last several years.”
