we love. Although I consciously attempt to express gratitude, sometimes it’s a challenge. It’s no secret I lost my Dad this past summer and that I am out of sorts as a result. Part of my grief journey includes embracing the lessons he attempted to impart, one of which involves Edgar Allen Poe’s “Eldorado.” The first stanza reads like this: Gaily bedight, A gallant knight, In sunshine and in shadow,

Had journeyed long, Singing a song, In search of Eldorado. Eldorado is a mystical city of gold, according to legend. In Poe’s tale, the knight is on a quest for Eldorado. Eventually the knight grows old and sorrowful because Eldorado is inaccessible to him. This poem was one of my Dad’s favorites. It still hangs in my parents’ home. My Dad believed that as humans, we spend our lives seeking success and happiness (i.e., Eldorado), but we look outside ourselves for these things. Maybe our cup will finally be full when we get that pay raise or a bigger house. I’m guilty of this. Why do we keep trying to obtain more when

cant issue with his endeavor. He’s so consumed with Eldorado that he spends his entire life searching for it, but he overlooks everything along the way. Life is a winding adventure. It’s about finding your voice and the courage to live and speak your own truth. While ambition is important, being present and enjoying the ride are equally important. If a goal becomes as preposterous as a life-long search for Eldorado, then we’re in danger of missing out. We’ll never be content if we look outside

ourselves to determine whether we’re fulfilled. True contentment comes from within. I’m not discouraging the expression of gratitude or counting one’s blessings, and I’m not discouraging having pride in one’s home or rocking that new pair of shoes (so long as you can afford them!). Rather, this Thanksgiving I’m encouraging the consideration of what truly makes life meaningful and to count those blessings. I’m encouraging you to stop searching for more—or trying to obtain more—in your quest for happiness and instead to recognize that you already have everything inside of you.

THE COMING HOME OF DAVID DASTMALCHIAN

ARTICLE LISA MOYER

28

Leawood Lifestyle | November 2019

ON A SUNLIT SATURDAY IN THE ‘80S, DAVID PEDALED HIS BIKE HARD UP 95TH STREET TOWARD METCALF SOUTH SHOPPING CENTER IN OVERLAND PARK. With a pocketful of lawnmowing money and a mind filled with adventure, he burst into Clint’s Comics to buy another issue of Avengers, Batman or otherworldly battles of good and evil. David later journaled his thoughts, as Mr. Haupt taught him at Oak Park Elementary. Journaling helped him through his parents’ divorce—expressing unmasked emotions and penning superhero-sized dreams. It was a tool he’d return to often in life, especially after attempting suicide following depression and a five-year heroin addiction. This SMSouth graduate went from starring on stages and in stadiums to living in his car and destitute. Institutionalized, bed-strapped, and infected from dirty needles, he was ravaged of health and dreams. In true character arc, David Dastmalchian hit bottom before skyrocketing up. Today, you see him on red carpets for his latest blockbuster (Dark Knight, Ant-Man, with Dune and Suicide Squad coming your way), but it was a long night’s journey into day. “Here’s the thing,” Dastmalchian says from his location filming Hulu’s Reprisal, “my family never gave up on me. Neither did my friends, community or even complete strangers, like those mental health workers who dedicated their lives to my recovery.” Dastmalchian says his family also realized they couldn’t enable him: “It’s so hard for parents, but tough love is true love. It doesn’t swoop in and buy you a new car because you smashed the last one. It doesn’t let you show up unannounced and crash on their couch because you’ve been evicted yet again. It says when you’re truly ready, we’re here.” Now 17 years sober, Dastmalchian compels others to never give up on people. His original films Animals (2014) and KC-based All Creatures Here Below (2016) resound that nobody is beyond redemption. “I hope my stories carve out a little more compassion for others. We’re so much stronger together.” An authentic and transparent life is important to Dastmalchian: “I still see a therapist and use medication. There’s no shame or stigma in that. Depression and addiction don’t fully encompass my day anymore, and I’m loving life, but I know I’m not invincible.” As a husband and father of two, Dastmalchian says his family is non-negotiable. His wife of six years, Eve, is a muralist who travels with him, along with their son, Arlo, 5, and daughter, Pennie, 2.

THROUGH DARK NIGHTS RISING

(CON TI N UED)

“SURE, I WANT TO ENTERTAIN PEOPLE, BUT IT WOULD MEAN A LOT TO ME IF I TOLD STORIES THAT CONTRIBUTED SOME KINDNESS OR UNDERSTANDING IN THIS LIFE.”

“We stick together,” he says. “If we’re apart more than 10 days, it’s too hard for me. That may sound weak, but it’s a reality. My family is more important than my contract, billing or size of my trailer.” Dastmalchian says fatherhood has taught him that a fully lived life includes every emotion “we’re supposed to feel as humans” while navigated with kindness, independence, and faith, adding that fatherhood has fostered his relationship with God: “It’s exploded my feelings of love and gratitude I have for the Creator. I’m stretching out and finding new ways of experiencing that faith.” Whenever he returns to KC for work, charities, or Stroud’s and Jack Stack, he’s grateful for his Midwest upbringing: “My teachers, coaches and youth leaders impacted my life, especially in goal-setting. I wish I paid even more attention.” His children love visiting KC, especially Antioch Park, Deanna Rose, and Theatre-in-the-Park where Dastmalchian once performed: “It’s important my kids understand how blessed we are here. The rest of the world doesn’t look like this. It’s a special place.” Dastmalchian is passionate about bringing more projects to KC, and he’s not through exploring harrowing themes yet. On October 23, he’s releasing his brainspawn—Count Crowley—an original comic book series set in a fictional town resembling old Lenexa. “Monster movies weren’t at the top of Mom’s list,” he says and laughs. “I used to sneak downstairs to watch ‘Crematia Mortem’s Creature Feature’—movies starring Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney. I based the main character in Count Crowley off that host who fights monsters. You have to realize, I fought real demons in my life more horrifying, so I’m willing to go to some dark places creatively and explore frightening corners of the human experience. But I’m trying to get to a place—and I don’t always get this right—where it’s not just for shock but has meaning or purpose.” Today, Dastmalchian says that when he sees his name in lights, he doesn’t feel like he’s a success or that he’s made it yet. “Those red-carpet moments go by quickly, and then I’m back in the car with Eve. We look at each other and say, ‘let’s get some ice cream.’’ Going to Starbucks or the grocery store with my wife and kids is where my greatest moments of joy arrive. That feels like success to me. I have a family who loves me, and I love them. So, I take it back. I do feel like I’ve made it. I’m a very blessed man.” 30

HOT SPOT

(CON TI N U ED)

They invite you to step inside and enjoy being someone who chooses loving life, adoring yourself, accepting the world, being generous and grateful every day, and experiencing being provided for.”

Located at 333 Southwest Boulevard, this welcoming space has created a menu and environment that supports health and sustainability for both our community and the planet. They practice business through a term they have coined, “Sacred Commerce.” They strive to provide inspired service, honest and transparent communication and express “gratitude” for the richness of each of our lives. The restaurant itself is an expression of a world of plenty, and their food and people are a celebration of being alive. They support local farmers, including their farm, Be Love Too, which produces as much organically grown produce as they can use for the café. They compost all food scraps which are then used to enhance the quality of the soil in that farm in Edgerton, Kansas. They also walk the walk in every way, including installing solar panels, and serving food on tables made from reclaimed wood. Most of the lights are actually made from wine bottles! All boxes, containers, paper and glass are recycled. All the to-go ware is biodegradable. Every morsel of food prepared, every milkshake blended, and every coffee dripped is done so with an attitude of love. They invite you to step inside and enjoy being someone who chooses loving life, adoring yourself, accepting the world, being generous and grateful every day, and experiencing being provided for. There is no way you can leave without a smile on your face, and the feeling that you just ate a super healthy meal while taking part in wonderful, loving togetherness. 36

UPCOMING

THANKSGIVING FEAST FEAT, LET THIS LOCAL PIE SHOP HELP YOU STICK THE LANDING. Because let’s face it—pie is the sweet finale we always save room for, and we can tell when it’s the real deal. “A fresh, made-from-scratch pie conveys love, comfort and joy,” says Jan Knobel, co-owner of The Upper Crust Bakery in Downtown Overland Park. “Pie is nostalgic, meant to be shared, brings people together and makes people happy. Pie fixes everything.” Knobel and her sister/business partner, Elaine VanBuskirk, have taken a “sweet nugget of our upbringing” and formed it into a successful business. “But it’s a business that provides a real experience,” she says. “It’s always heartwarming to hear customers share their family memories of pie.” This small-batch, neighborhood bakery was voted “best pie in Kansas” by MSN this year and has been featured on The Daily Meal, 24/7 Wall Street, Food Network and The Pitch. Within walking distance of the Farmer’s Market, it’s one-part upbeat hipster shop stocked with home accessories, kitchenware and hostess gifts and twoparts old-fashioned bakery with pies, cookies and quiche that are all Grandma-good. Imagine flaky fresh-baked crust and warm gooey centers bursting with berries, creamy custards and glossy meringues or decadent chocolate or nut fillings, along with seasonal flavors to satisfy the pie lover within your soul. With dozens of pie selections yearround, they rotate 12-14 flavors daily. “We use family recipes or adapted favorites,” Knobel says. “We only use quality ingredients with no icky imitation flavorings, additives, mixes or preservatives.” Full size 9-inch pies feed 6-8 or try the 5-inch Cutie Pies. Enjoy coffee from Thou Mayest or cold milk in a glass bottle with a paper straw. Sip wine-by-theglass with special pricing for Third Fridays—where Downtown OP merchants stay open late. (Mark your calendars for Friday, Nov. 15.) Third Fridays at The Upper Crust features Pie Flights from 5-8 p.m. (or sellout). Choose three slices from a pre-set menu for $9. “Last month’s Pie Flight went through the roof,” Knobel says. “What a pleasant surprise!” Thanksgiving, their premier holiday, will be even bigger. They’re now accepting orders with easy website ordering. Because they never freeze their pies, their baking window is only 48 hours, so it’s a first-order system. (Pickup is Wed., Nov. 27.)

Knobel and VanBuskirk started their business in 2005 with the help of their mom, Pie Master Pat Nuss. “We grew up in Marion, KS where we were privileged to know what real pie looks and tastes like,” Knobel says. “Homemade pies were always a part of our upbringing.” With Nuss’s guidance, these sisters debuted at the OP Farmer’s Market, moved to a week-

end bakery inside Pryde’s Old Westport, then to their current location in 2011.

“Our roles are intertwined, but generally Elaine oversees the ‘front of the house’ while I oversee the back,” Knobel says. “We have such talented bakers and bakery assistants, and our front sales/service staff are critical to creating a positive customer experience. We’re extremely fortunate to have a helpful, happy and hardworking staff.” The sisters’ families have been integral to the business over the years with their husbands having business roles, and their five children folding pie boxes, washing pans, mopping floors, etc. “It’s definitely been a family affair,” Knobel says. “We’re fortunate that we like each other enough to want to work together, and outside work, our families still enjoy celebrating holidays or events together and just hanging out.” The Upper Crust is committed to community, especially Downtown OP, with all tip jar proceeds donated to a different charity each month. “Besides great customers, we have fabulous hardworking neighbors dedicated to making Downtown OP a destination for young and old alike,” Knobel says and adds with a grin, “And Patrick Mahomes…if you’re listening, come by and try our cherry pie.” CONTACT: THE UPPER CRUST PIE BAKERY 7943 Santa Fe Dr., O.P., KS 66204 (913) 642-2999 uppercrustpiebakery.com Open Wed.-Fri. 10 a.m-5:30 p.m./Sat. 10-4 Third Fridays (except December) 5-8 p.m. for Pie Flights
