The question should be “How are you?” Not “Who are you?”
When a doctor sees 30-40 patients a day, it’s more difficult to know each of them on a truly personal level. At PartnerMD, our concierge primary care doctors see far fewer patients than a traditional practice, allowing significant time for listening, understanding and a respectful two-way conversation. This is how real partnerships are built, leading to more personalized care and lifelong advocacy for you and your health. Get to know us better at partnerMD.com.
Care so personal, it’s like having a doctor in the family.

RHONDA HOWLE T T CARROLL
FOUNDER/PRINCIPAL BROKER, CLOCKTOWER REALTY GROUP
G I V I N G B A C K T O S TA F F A N D C O M M U N I T Y YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? We started Clocktower as a small brokerage in 2017, and now have over 60 of the most genuine, hard-working, incredible agents. We owe our success to them. A lack of insurance options for real estate agents led us to implement the first group health plans in Central Virginia, possibly the state, for 1099 agents and their families. HOW IMPORTANT IS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT? My parents always said, if you look out for people around you, you’ll always be OK, and it’s true. We enjoy helping the community – we’ve done everything from making meals for the homeless to rebuilding a porch for a disabled veteran. It’s a great way to get together as a company and give back. BEST ADVICE EVER GOTTEN OR GIVEN? We always say, “Go big or go home.” That’s our unofficial company slogan. If you’re going to do something, knock it out of the park, or don’t bother. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? I grew up in a small town on the Bay and love being on the water. I love traveling and spending time with my amazing family and English bulldog, Hank.

COMMUNIT Y BEFORE COMPE TITION WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PUBLISHED PHOTO? A total surprise! It was a landscape I’d taken while living and teaching on Dominica, in the Caribbean, published in a local news outlet. This built my confidence and led to my launching my photography business part-time on Dominica and then full-time in the States. WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF COMMUNITY BUSINESS? I took the approach of community over competition, because we should support and bring out the best in one another. During this coronavirus crisis, I support the community by staying home and ordering delivery services to help small businesses, as I know firsthand the struggles of small business ownership right now. I’ve also volunteered with local nonprofits to provide event photography. BIGGEST LESSON LEARNED? BEST ADVICE? Ask yourself if you’re passionate about what you do. If not, change it. Also, advocate for yourself and ask for help. It’s OK if you haven’t figured everything out. It’s OK to leave a job to pursue your passion. I did! HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND PRIVATE LIFE? WHAT’S FUN? I used to hustle non-stop. Now I don’t have the urge to answer emails right away. I’m a nature lover so I like hiking with my husband, Ben, and dog, Tux, snapping photos of the views around me.

B E A R O L E M O D E L HOW SHOULD WE SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY IN STRESSFUL TIMES? This is a time to remain calm and keep a sense of humor. We have a lot of little eyes watching us to see how we react. It’s also time to share from your abundance. We’ve been privileged to perform at assisted living facilities, church events and the Virginia Dance Festival, which benefits the Children’s Hospital Foundation. We’ve also partnered with Girl Scouts to provide a year of dance for underprivileged youth. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE? This is probably the most difficult piece. Legacy is a huge part of our lives. It’s family to us. The work doesn’t always feel like work. YOUR FAVORITE RELAXATION? We love adventure, new experiences and places. We travel within the USA and see what our country has to offer. And we love to incorporate dance as we travel.
BRENDA WHITE GENERAL MANAGER, CHESTERFIELD COUNTY FAIR
COMING TOGE THER AS A COMMUNIT Y HOW CAN WE COPE IN TRYING TIMES? It’s imperative that we all come together as a united front. We must exercise patience and understanding as well as kindness, like offering to help our elderly – even just checking their mail. BEST ADVICE FOR OTHERS? I’m a huge believer that the “best” qualified person gets the job. If that means that you have to work twice as hard, then DO IT! HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE? I’m lucky I can work from home. Down time is necessary, but I admit I’m the type who never really turns the Fair “off.” We hope everyone is safe and healthy and able to join us at the Fair Aug. 28-Sept. 7! YOUR FAVORITE RELAXATION? My go-to is Lake Gaston. I go with my fiance, Robert, my son, Travis, and his wife, Nicole, my dog, Ally, and my grand-dogs, Wrigley and Charlie. 18

SEIZE OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO OUR COMMUNITY? I help small businesses optimize their online customer experience. When the pandemic hit, I saw an opportunity to help because many businesses have only a rudimentary online presence. One thing I admired about that time was how people supported one another personally and professionally, investing in local commerce and volunteering. So I did my part by offering free and discounted custom strategic plans for businesses affected by COVID-19 that wanted help devising more virtual solutions. BEST LESSON LEARNED? Know your worth and the value you provide. Money is a renewable resource. Time isn’t. I became an entrepreneur so I could spend time with my growing family and still make a good living, then promptly started working all the time. Turns out I’m in charge of my schedule! SO HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE? I carefully plan my day employing time blocking and Pomodoro techniques to protect the time I have for all my needs, like family dinner, clients, and time to just be. BEST ADVICE YOU’VE GOTTEN OR GIVEN? Being a solopreneur is a myth. Invest in people whose strengths complement your weaknesses. Doing so promotes business and personal growth. YOUR BIGGEST INDULGENCE? I’m a sucker for Edy’s Espresso Chip and a good book.

CAMILLE SCHRIER IS SMASHING STEREOTYPES AS SHE PROMOTES STEM, FIGHTS MEDICATION MISUSE, AND SHARES HER OWN INSPIRING STORY
IT WAS A RISK. A HUGE RISK. It was June 22, 2019, and Miss Dominion was preparing to take the stage in Lynchburg to perform her talent in the Miss Virginia pageant. She hadn’t rehearsed a song or choreographed a dance or memorized lines from a famous play. She strode into the lights wearing a lab coat and demonstrated the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide with potassium iodide (a substance also known as “elephant toothpaste”). The explosion was spectacular, and not just on stage. Miss Dominion became Miss Virginia, and went on to the Miss America pageant, where she again performed her science-experiment-as-talent. Perhaps less of a risk this time, but with similarly spectacular results – an enthralled audience, a set of impressed judges, and the Miss America crown. Is Camille Schrier a natural risk-taker? “I still find myself afraid to fail,” Schrier said recently, on a break during a “Southern swing” tour that included stops in Richmond and elsewhere in Virginia. “It’s one of the biggest messages I hope to get out. In the era of everything online, we’re afraid to do things where we fail, or do things that are different from others. I talk about this a lot in schools.” Then, in a display of humility and generosity for which Schrier has become known, she pointed out that several fellow contestants also took risks during the Miss America talent competition, citing a ceramics demonstration by Miss Idaho and speed painting by Miss Kansas. Known also for her devotion to STEM studies, Schrier is using her platform as Miss America to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics studies and careers to girls and young women. “I’m making it normal for Miss America to be a woman of science,” Schrier said. “The culture of women is changing. many people who are struggling with mental health issues, and I’m not afraid to share my story, so they can find help.” While she has a super-busy year ahead of her, Schrier seizes opportunities to relax and unwind. She confessed a modest couch potato streak (“I’m a millennial who still watches cable TV like TLC”) and a love of cooking and baking (“At I home I will always make myself a meal for fun”). And she’s looking ahead. Her goal after her Miss America year is to finish her doctoral work at VCU – with reduced student debt thanks to her pageant scholarships – and then to work in a nontraditional pharmacy role, perhaps on the business side of a pharmaceutical company. “I think I’ll be very appreciative of the routine – coming home from work and relaxing at home,” she said wistfully. “I don’t do that now.”
“ S i l e n t N o M o re” While visiting VCU in January, Camille Schrier spoke at the “Silent No More” Overdose Symposium. “We have the unique power to prevent this disease through education, to combat the problem at its core,” she said, adding she intended to seek out stories of addiction while on tour because “we’ll be better pharmacy professors after hearing these stories.”

KEEPING YOUR TICKER IN TUNE IS A MATTER OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT EATS AND NOT BEING A COUCH POTATO
Dr. Susan Scharpf
“Diet and exercise – without question we know that’s the key to a heart-healthy lifestyle,” Dr. Scharpf says. “But there’s no one answer to which diet.” Each health pro has her favorite go-to diet. Dr. Scharpf favors plant-based regimens such as the DASH diet (Dietary

Monsen advocates keto-style eating, limiting carbs to 20 grams per day. While vastly different in their approaches to starchy foods, both diet preferences share important commonalities – their focus on fresh, whole, minimally processed Health coach Jaime Monsen
and non-packaged food. “If it flies, walks, crawls, swims, or grows, you can eat it,” Monsen says. “If it’s in a package, beware.” A focus on whole, unprocessed foods can mean a lot of cooking, but both health pros are enthusiastic supporters of popular meal delivery services such as Hello Fresh and Blue Apron. It can also mean confusion in the grocery aisles; Monsen regularly accompanies patients to the supermarket for lessons on food selection and label reading. Eating whole foods puts you halfway to a healthy heart; to get the rest of the way you need exercise. Dr. Scharpf says the general rule is 150 minutes of cardiovascu-

WE’RE PUTTING HUGS ON HOLD (FOR NOW)
BUT SENDING SMILES YOUR WAY These are hard and uncertain times for all of us. And even though we’d love to give every single one of you a big ol bear hug right now (because we all need one), we know it’s more important to keep a safe distance in order to protect the most vulnerable members of our community. Here at Brandermill Woods, we continue to do everything in our power to make sure our residents are as safe as possible. But we can’t do it alone. This is going to take all of us, working together by being apart. So, thank you, from all us, for putting gatherings, socializing, mingling and even hugs on hold for the time being. We know it’s hard, but video chats, waving and smiles will have to do for now. Be sure to save up all those hugs for the future. We will get through this together! Your friends at Brandermill Woods!

neighborhoods that surround them convey a compelling message about a region’s values and priorities,” Lafayette says. Laura Lafayette with Greta Harris of Better Housing Coalition
To help ensure a high quality of life, Lafayette serves on the board of the nonprofit Partnership for Housing Affordability. The partnership is currently working on the Richmond Regional Housing Framework that will promote new entrepreneurial ventures, reduce congestion and create opportunities for private investment, all with a goal of enhancing quality of life and providing tangible solutions for those with housing challenges. RAR also supports Better Housing Coalition, Project: HOMES, The Sophie House, Housing Virginia, Richmond Metro Habitat for Humanity, Virginia Supportive Housing, and Homeward. “Laura and RAR have supported and helped grow our affordable housing industry,” said Greta Harris, president and CEO of Better Housing Coalition. “They have strengthened our nonprofit capacities, influenced meaningful policies and helped us work more collaboratively together in order to serve more families. They understand the importance of quality housing choices across all incomes in our RVA region.” Some of Lafayette’s specific activities in support of the housing partnerships include volunteering during Richmond’s Affordable Housing Awareness Week, presenting at Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney’s housing summit, helping to break ground at the first Community Land Trust home in Church Hill, and celebrating with new homeowners at a “key ceremony” at their new house.
Laura Lafayette volunteers during Richmond Affordable Housing Awareness Week
Within the broader community, Laura serves as a gubernatorial appointee to the Virginia Housing Commission and is the chair of the Board of Housing Virginia, the founding chair of the board of the Maggie L. Walker Community Land Trust, and the immediate past chair of Homeward. She also serves on the board of the Peter Paul Development Center as well as the vestry of Christ Church Episcopal. But RAR’s community involvement goes beyond supporting housing organizations. Through a donor-directed fund at The Community Foundation, the association was able to allocate $70,000 to nine local educational nonprofits last year. Lafayette’s core driver is to create a community of opportunity, and she never turns down a platform to talk about her passion, often speaking at conferences and community functions. “We’re not looking at what the city will look like in 2020,” she says, “but what it will look like in 2030.” She also works to instill her passion for community work into every member Realtor; each is introduced to the issue of housing opportunity through new-member orientation, and they are reminded at every RAR event thereafter. Lafayette emphasizes to the association’s members that expanding opportunities in the community has a direct positive impact on individual real estate agencies. “People don’t buy a home until they’ve first bought into a community’s quality of life,” she says.
