KIRKLAND, LET ME START BY SAYING WE LOVE YOU. This is my hometown and my heart bleeds for what we are all enduring. Who would have thought that our tiny town would be the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in the US? Originally this copy was to be the “Women’s Issue”, but we shifted gears quickly in attempt to help our local businesses and give them a forum to deliver their message. We are all in this together, and it is our goal to help Kirkland businesses not only survive, but thrive throughout this crisis. How will we remember these days in

the years to come? During sheltering in place, home schooling, disinfecting everything we come into contact with and working from home, how can we give back? Please dig deep and find any and every reason to support our local businesses. I am so proud of you, Kirkland, for improvising and for staying strong during this time. I’m proud of you for promoting safety, for offering curbside deliveries and for continuing to take care of our residents. I am proud of our leaders, our first responders, and our selfless citizens who have become teachers and remote entrepreneurs in a moment’s notice while redeveloping their daily routines in order to keep others safe.

QUICHE - THE QUINTESSENTIAL BRUNCH DISH. It’s so versatile, both in the ingredients and in the side dishes that pair well. Got a breakfast planned with family? Pair quiche with chicken sausage and berries. Got lunch with friends? Serve it with a side salad tossed in a bright vinaigrette. This quiche is crustless and has egg whites in place of some of the eggs so it’s lower in calories, carbohydrates, and fat too. Feel free to swap the asparagus with other vegetables, such as broccoli, zucchini & summer squash, mushrooms, or bell peppers.

enough health care resources to take care of the people who need them most and to protect our loved ones who are at high risk for severe disease. Responding to a pandemic calls for cooperation, patience, handwashing, and isolation. It’s not easy, but Kirkland can do it. While we are physically isolating ourselves during this time, think about what you can do to maintain connections with your friends and neighbors. Call a friend to check in. Send caring messages over email. Help your kids draw a picture or a card to mail to a relative. We all need these connections more than ever right now. It is also important that we remember our community’s values of being safe, inclusive, and welcoming. As can happen during times of community stress, this outbreak of COVID-19 carries with it the threat of xenophobia, racism, and bigotry. No race, nationality, or ethnicity is more likely to have COVID-19. Speak up if you hear, see, or read harassment, and avoid spreading misinformation. keep our community safe during this uncertain time. The necessary social distancing measures have significantly impacted businesses and the ability for many people to earn an income. The City is exploring options to support those in our community most vulnerable to economic instability. Links to important resources such as housing and food assistance are available on the City’s website, as are ways to volunteer and donate to services that will directly help members of our community. To assist businesses affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, the City has compiled information and resources that will be immediately useful during this emergency and for the future when we can work toward recovery. This information is available on the City’s website and has been mailed to all Kirkland businesses. Our businesses are essential to the fabric of our community, and we will be doing everything possible to ensure their success into the future. Thank you to everyone who is finding creative ways to support our local businesses during this challenging time. The safety and well-being of the Kirkland community is our top priority. The pandemic remains a quickly evolving event, and, at this time, we don’t know how long we will be in an emergency situation. But this too shall pass. On the other side of COVID-19, we will begin the hard work of recovery. Together, we will not just survive this challenge, we will emerge as an even stronger community that sets an example for the world.

Kirkland Urban phase I is a one million+ square foot, mixed-use development that is changing the fabric of Kirkland. Both a home and a destination, Kirkland Urban incorporates the best of the waterfront community, combining an authentic, neighborhood feel with urban energy. Now complete, the first phase of the multi-phase project was built by Ryan Companies and includes two office buildings, three retail buildings, a multifamily building and an abundance of open public spaces and parking options. The mixed-use property features a well-curated shopping experience as well as dozens of restaurants and bars. Workers, residents and visitors have an anchor grocer with QFC, which contains a Q20 pub with rotating beer taps, an in-store pizzeria; Tutta Bella, and a Starbucks. The following shops or restaurants are either open now or plan to open at Kirkland Urban: Shake Shack, Lounge by Topgolf, Mud Bay, Plantiful, Power Hour 360, Mosaic Salon, Chainline Brewing Company, Restore Cryotherapy, Evergreens, Levue Nail Lounge, Vinason Pho & Grill, Bright Horizons Childcare, AT&T, First Tech Bank, Caffe Ladro, Purple, Dough Zone, and Soi. Latest retailer opening news and a directory can be found at Kirkland Urban’s website: https://www.kirklandurban.com/. The multifamily building, Uptown, is located at the prominent Northeast corner of the development and includes 185 units. Residents of Uptown at Kirkland Urban enjoy the surrounding amenities and those within Uptown including a rooftop terrace, lounge, bike storage and personal storage, bike workstation, 24-hour fitness center, conference/meeting room and pet accommodations. Balconies allow for a stronger connection to nature – especially in those select units with a view of Lake Washington. There is also a central pedestrian plaza providing outdoor gathering spaces and access to street-level retail and premium concierge service available to facilitate day-to-day tasks for employees, guests and residents. The plaza provides vehicle access and parking to support the office and retail tenants, while providing a traffic calming and pedestrian activated space. Significant below-grade parking is available to accommodate the demands of the project as well. The Kirkland Urban site is framed between Central Avenue and Kirkland Way, west of 6th Street. Residents, visitors, and employees have immediate access to Peter Kirk Park on the west edge of the property, as well as the civic campus that includes the Kirkland Library, the Community Center, Senior Center, Teen Union and Kirkland Performance Center.

By incorporating public plazas and the public jewel that is Peter Kirk Park, Kirkland Urban also connects the Kirkland CBD from 6th Street to the water. The community will also be forever altered by the public spaces at Kirkland Urban which allow for a broad range of uses including concerts, art walks, restaurant weeks and other events all in a walkable, compact destination—just minutes from Lake Washington. Former mayor of Kirkland, Amy Walen, described the impact of Kirkland Urban on the community: “Our quality of life is our economic development strategy, and this project achieves that. This does everything for us, and it’s an incredible opportunity for the city. It’s going to be a jewel of the region!” Her words encapsulate the overarching goals of the project, which the team has achieved – create interconnectivity within Kirkland and the surrounding area and strengthen economic growth. Currently, phase II, a 285,000 square foot office building with a movie theater and retail on the ground floor above two levels of additional parking garage area is under construction. With over twenty retailers, 400,000 square feet of office for 3,000 workers, 1,700 parking spaces and homes for 185 new residents, the project continues to build and sustain the growth of Kirkland.

THE VILLAGE AT TOTEM LAKE CONSIDERS OUR GUESTS, EMPLOYEES AND TENANTS TO BE PART OF OUR EXTENDED FAMILY. And just like your family, our days (and our hours) might look a little different right now. As we continue to move forward, we want to express our sincere gratitude to all of the employees at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Market and to our restaurant partners, Chipotle, Joe’s Burgers, and MOD Pizza, for their hard work to support our community. We are proud to be part of such a resilient community and appreciate the continued privilege of serving you. We also want to say thank you to our neighbors at EvergreenHealth for the extraordinary work they are doing to care for those impacted and for keeping our community healthy. COVID-19 is teaching us all to be more flexible, gracious and patient with one another. It is also showing us that the Kirkland community is strong. We can and will get through this, together. Once it is prudent, we hope to celebrate the openings of lululemon, Athleta, Evereve, and Sephora as well as enjoy a movie at Cinemark, some ice cream at Salt & Straw, and so much more with you soon. You can follow us on social media (@ShopTotemLake) or visit our website (TheVillageAtTotemLake.com) for ongoing updates. PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing all your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a window garden for basil, cilantro, dill or thyme. In order to grow larger plants, such as tomatoes, lemons or — yes, even avocados — you’ll need some larger containers, like large pots, baskets or box planters.
