Kids and Pets AS I WORKED ON THIS ISSUE, ONE THING WAS ALWAYS CONSTANT—MY SUPER CUTE DOG, LAYING BY MY FEET UNDER MY DESK AS I TYPED AWAY. For the eight years she’s been with us (we rescued her when she was about a year old), she’s been a constant companion and friend to our entire family—especially my two kids, who wouldn’t know what to do without her. She curls up on their beds as

they’re going to sleep; runs, tail wagging, to greet them when they come home from school; and comes bounding to them when they call her name. Kids and pets fill our lives with such joy, and that’s why we always dedicate our August issue to them. Once again, we’ve rounded up some of the cutest kids and pets in our area and put them all over these pages for you to enjoy. Brace yourself—they may be too cute to handle! Check out the cute kids who share their baking talents with us, meet a dog who truly lives up to his name, read about a basketball club that gives back, and a nonprofit that helps with sensory issues—by teaching kids to surf!

represented a willingness to own his bold personality.

“It was me being an arrogant uncooperative male and not being there for [Jen] when she needed me most,” he says.

While a freshman in high school, Chandler witnessed his best friend die in class from sudden heart failure. A skull on his right arm memorializes him. “The skull represents a new beginning. It’s a reminder that he’s with me all the time,” Chandler says. On his left arm, peonies celebrate his daughters, and another skull honors his brother, with whom he grew close. “It’s a reminder that you’ve got to be able to work with your family and be there when they need you,” he says. In assistant principal mode, long-sleeved dress shirts cover his ink. When the cuffs are folded or sleeves rolled up just a few inches, they are visible. He never explains their meaning to students. It’s too personal. But in some cases it bridges a trust gap that students have with administrators. It’s been an icebreaker with parents, especially when a disciplinary issue brings them to his office. The art builds a connection where there may have been distance. “They see me and think, that does not look like the principal we had back in the day,” he says. Occasionally, the career Chandler loves brings intense heaviness. Over his career, he has successfully intervened during five student suicide attempts. When he experiences a powerful event—positive or negative—Chandler heads to artist Sam Hicks from Dark Horse Tattoo in Gilbert, who has done his sleeves, and who is only the second artist to work on him. This connection is intentional and the process has become a form of therapy. “I know some people see a counselor, but I’m not one to talk about my feelings like that,” Chandler says. “When I want to go and decompress, it’s a place where I’m able to separate myself from reality for seven or eight hours, talk with my tattoo artist… it’s the whole experience that is therapeutic to me.”

“MY TATTOOS ARE THE STORY OF MY LIFE AND NOT JUST SIMPLY ART.”

Beginning in August, feline clients will have their own private entrance, lobby and exam room. “We’re really excited because this is the first feline facility to be added to Chandler,” says Dr. Andrea Stickland, the owner of Animal Medical Center of Chandler. “We’ve done a lot of feline medicine. There are some cats that are used to [being around other animals] but

there are some who’ve never seen a dog. It makes our lives and the owners’ lives easier to have a separate area for kitties.” They work with a lot of high stress felines and do what they can to make their visit a pleasant experience with pheromone sprayed towels, cat trees and special brushes. They also have extended appointment times. “We take our time, let them feel who we are, and we’ve learned to read body language. We do the same thing with dogs. We’re a fear-free facility and go through a lot of training and work to keep our dogs and cats calm,” says Stickland. Animal Medical Center of Chandler is a family-owned and -operated facility,

run by Stickland and her husband, who handles the business side. They have four veterinarians on staff. “Our goal in this part of Chandler is to really encompass that family-oriented feel. We have an open door. Our technicians are heavily trained and a second arm to the doctors,” she says.

They welcome questions and have a hands-on approach with their clients. Before opening the Animal Medical Center of Chandler six years ago, Stickland was a minor partner at another facility. She took all the good things she learned from previous jobs, to create a place she’d want to bring her pets. “Our extended exams make us different than a lot of facilities,” says Stickland. “We try to do a thorough exam at every appointment. If we are looking at the ears, we look at the entire body. Their appointments run from 30 minutes to an hour. They also offer telemedicine appointments. Stickland has always been an animal person but started her medical career on the human side. She was in pre-med for obstetrics and gynecology but landed a veterinarian assistant job as an undergrad. “I fell in love with the fact there was such a great relationship between the animals and the people. I really got to know the families and their animals. It was a hard decision,” she says. At the very end she got into both schools, but veterinarian school won. “I love animals, but you really have to love the people, too,” says Stickland. Learn more at Amcofc.com. 18

CBD for K i d s & Pe t s ?

DAVID BAKER, OWNER OF NATURE’S BLOOM, TALKS ABOUT THE POSSIBLE PERKS

CBD SEEMS TO BE ALL THE RAGE—BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS IT, AND IS IT SAFE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND FURRY FRIENDS? David Baker, owner of Nature’s Bloom, a retail shop specializing in CBD products, believes so. CBD stands for cannabidiol. According to Harvard Health Publishing, a health resource blog by Harvard Medical School, CBD is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis. It is derived directly from the hemp plant, and does not in itself cause a high of any sort. Harvard Health Publishing goes on to point out that, according to the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” Baker supports these statements and notes that CBD is legal in Arizona. “CBD is not the same as weed; it’s less than 0.3% THC, which is the legal amount,” he clarifies. “Therefore, you do not need a medical card to purchase products from the store. That’s a big misconception we see a lot. Anyone can come in and purchase helpful CBD products, no card needed.” ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 20

best way to do it is with a couple of drops under your tongue for 60 seconds.” Most of his customers who ask about CBD for their children are parents and caregivers who are concerned about their children’s behavioral, anxiety, and sleep issues. CBD is known to be used in children for seizure disorders (like epilepsy), according to experts, but Baker has also seen it used for children on the autism spectrum, as well.

“I’ve seen CBD help older dogs with mobilit y issues, and it helps with aches and pains,” he says. “It also helps with anxiet y and puts animals in a better mood.”

He can point to many success stories from local customers who saw behavioral problems improve with their children. Baker also believes that CBD is known to be a natural inflammatory and helps with cell regeneration.

With all of his clients—kids, pets, and adults—Baker says that his shop has a personalized touch and helps everyone with questions and dosing information. He encourages

The nonprofit accomplishes this through two annual events—one every March in Mexico, and one every August at Big Surf in the East Valley. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, there is not an event happening this month locally, but the organization is still raising funds to provide swag bags to the children who would have participated. It does this with the monetary support of many companies in the surf industry, as well as support from local businesses. “It’s obviously really hard not to have an event this year,” Romney says. He adds that they hope to have an event in March 2021 in Mexico and be back locally in August 2021. Since 2014, Romney says that the nonprofit has impacted 2,000 kids who were able to experience surfing for free (at the local event, Big Surf is rented out for the day). Professional surfers and swimmers such as Clay Marzo, Curt Harper, Amy Bilquist, and Josh Kerr, among others, have supported the nonprofit. A lot of big name surfing brands also help to fund the efforts. “A lot of kids with special needs like autism don’t get the sensory input that they need,” Romney shares. “Through experiences like surfing therapy, kids get new sensory input and can focus and enjoy. Their lives often change immediately. While we specialize in autism, the event is open to kids with all types of disabilities who would benefit from this type of therapy. “I have to give all of the credit for Nixon’s successes to him and my wife—she, like many special needs parents, is doing all she can to make sure he has everything he needs day-in and day-out,” he adds. Romney says that, although there is no event this month, Surfing with Nixon can always use monetary donations and volunteers to help. To learn more, visit SurfingWithNixon.org. 26

ABU’s

MONKEY BREAD Recipe from the Disney Princess Cookbook, cooked by Yvonne Carrol, age 7 “I like baking challenging things. It’s yummy and it looks good when it comes out of the oven. I like how it pulls apart.”—Yvonne Carrol

INGREDIENTS + 3 cups flour + 4 tsp. baking powder + 1 tsp. salt + 1/3 cup cold butter + 1 1/4 cup milk + 1/2 cup brown sugar + 1/2 cup white sugar + 1 tsp. cinnamon + 6 Tbsp. butter, melted

DIRECTIONS Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Generously grease a nonstick fluted tube pan. In a mixing bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt. With a table knife, cut the butter into small pieces. Use your fingertips to pinch the butter into the flour mixture until the lumps of butter are about the size of peas. Then stir in the milk. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5 seconds. Pull off pieces of the dough and shape them into 2 1/2 to 3 dozen golf ball-sized pieces. Mix the brown sugar, white sugar, and cinnamon together in a small bowl. One at a time, dip the dough balls into the melted butter, roll them in the sugar mixture, and place them in the prepared pan. Stack the balls on top of one another until the pan is full. Ask an adult to help you at the oven. Bake the monkey bread for 20 to 25 minutes. You can tell if the bread is ready by sticking a toothpick into it. If the toothpick comes out clean, the bread is done baking. Set the bread aside to cool for about 10 minutes. Use a small spatula to gently loosen the bread from the sides of the pan. Now it’s time to turn the monkey bread out of the pan. Be sure to ask an adult for help with this step! First place a serving dish face down on top of the fluted tube pan. Next, hold the dish and pan together securely, and flip them over. Slowly lift the pan off the plate and release the monkey bread. Let the bread cool slightly. Then pull pieces from it. 30

Do Your Kids Know the Value of a Silver Spoon?

JEREMY MCCLYMONDS, OWNER AND FINANCIAL ADVISOR WITH FORM PROSPERITY WEALTH ADVISORS, LLC, SHARES HIS TIPS You taught them how to read and ride a bike, but have you taught your child how to manage money? Without the proper education in dealing with money, children are at risk of becoming financially irresponsible in life. By engaging with your child about how money works, save them (and yourself) some heartache by teaching them the basics of smart money management. We consulted with Jeremy McClymonds, owner and financial advisor with FORM Prosperity Wealth Advisors, LLC to learn more. HAVE THE CONVERSATION. “The best time to start teaching your kids about money is the age they begin to count. Start by identifying, counting and sorting coins.

LET THEM LIVE IT. An allowance program helps teach the relationship between work and money. “Age 5 or 6 is a good time to begin giving your child a small allowance. Introducing an income is an opportunity to teach money management and good saving habits,” says McClymonds.

AZ FIRE Basketball Club

TEAM WAS DISBANDED BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH PLAYERS, GRIJALVA WAS INSPIRED. He decided to coach the kids himself, and start a club with his friend, Jim Shewbridge. So in 2017, he founded AZ FIRE Basketball Club, a nonprofit, faith-based program designed to build character, encourage education, and teach philanthropy. The club started with eight kids and ended last season with 15 teams, 140 players, and about 15 coaches. Shewbridge is still involved as the finance manager.

MEET CHAMP THIS LABRADOR RETRIEVER LIVES UP TO HIS NAME

ARTICLE MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

FAVORITE HOBBY: SWIMMING

CHAMP WAS JUST 6 WEEKS OLD WHEN HIS FAMILY—TONY, SANDY, AND THEIR KIDS, ALEX, GABBY, VICTORIA, AND PATRICK (NOW 24, 22, AND 19, RESPECTIVELY) ADOPTED HIM. The now 7-year-old dog “loves the pool and his favorite toys are the three pool toys that he stuffs in his mouth and does not let go,” they share. Recently, Champ required surgery. “He had a bullae build up in his lung, which caused a puncture in part of the lung,” Sandy explains. “The lung couldn’t expand because pressure was building on the outside and he had trouble breathing.” The family brought him to Dr. Stickland at Animal Medical Center of Chandler. When Dr. Stickland explained the options, they knew it wasn’t ever a choice—they wanted to try to save Champ at all costs. “She and her staff put Champ in her private vehicle and while they transported him to the hospital, staff members were in the back of the vehicle helping him breathe.” The surgery entailed removing part of his lung. Thankfully, it was a success. “He is more than a family pet, he is family,” they say. “He is a kind, loving, and gentle dog who makes everyone around him happy.”
