'Tis the season to be jolly—if only we can check off every item of our ever-growing lists, right? With shopping, cooking, and making appearances at the numerous holiday parties, the holidays can be a hectic time. Our theme for this issue is 'Revel,' though, so I encourage you to slow down and enjoy the season a bit amid the hustle and bustle. To that end, we've found some of the best items in the Northland to help check off your holiday shopping list. Find our gift guide on page 22. And if you need a way to connect with the kiddos, there are so many wonderful events available in the area, from Christmas tea to visits with the man in red himself to enjoying some fireworks along the river. There's truly something for everyone! I'm excited to celebrate the holidays with my family this year. My youngest, Indra,

The Greatest Gifts HAPPY HOLIDAYS, FRIENDS! I can't believe it's December already. It seems like just yesterday that my son, Coy, and I were swimming laps in the wave pool at Oceans of Fun, our summer happy place. Now, I find myself the happy (but tired) mom of two boys! Charlie James was born in October and life has been so much fun as our family gets to know him. They say that your heart doubles in size when your second child comes along and I can attest to that! Coy is absolutely in love with his little brother, and it's been a pure joy to watch my husband, Zach, be a dad of two. He's really gone above and beyond to make the transition to a family of four an easy one. Of course, we aren't alone in this. My mother has been a saint, supporting us through our hospital stay and transition home. It just proves that you're never too old to need your momma. I just hope that I can be as wonderful as she is. Family is really what the holidays are all about and there's no better place to spend time with your family than in the Northland! Between all the great local shopping options and the myriad holiday activities, we are spoiled. I can't wait to take the boys ice skating, drive around looking at lighting displays with a thermos of hot chocolate or meet Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Atkins-Johnson Farm. Of course, that's a little ways off. Right now, I'm happy to snuggle my boys and soak up the holiday spirit. This holiday season, I'm more grateful than ever for my family. And although that gift outweighs all others, I won't turn down a candle from Nell HIll's either! Cheers!

Need the Perfect Gift? INGREDIENTS + Unsalted butter for skillet + 1/2 cup dried cranberries + 2 large eggs + 1/2 cup light brown sugar + 1/2 cup granulated sugar + 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract + 2/3 cup unbleached all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled + 2 teaspoons baking powder + 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt + 1 cup chopped pecans, toasted + 1 medium-size pear or apple, peeled, cored, and chopped into 1/2-inch chunks
DIRECTIONS Position a rack to the center of the oven and preheat it to 350°F. Butter a 10-inch cast-iron skillet. In a small, microwave-safe bowl, combine the cranberries and ¼ cup of water. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Microwave on high for 45 seconds. Keep the bowl covered and set aside while you prepare the batter. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the eggs, brown and granulated sugar, and vanilla. Beat on high speed until light in color and tripled in volume, about 5 minutes. Sift the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt over the batter. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the batter. Drain the cranberries and pat them dry with paper towels. Fold the cranberries and three-quarters of the pecans into the batter. Pour the batter into the prepared skillet. Top with the pears or apples, then sprinkle with the remaining pecans. Bake until the cake is puffed and golden, about 35 minutes—a toothpick inserted into the center may come out quite moist, but not wet with batter, as the cake will continue to bake in the hot pan. Let cool until just warm and serve with lots of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. December 2019 | Northland Lifestyle

IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE. . . WELL, YOU KNOW THE REST. The holidays are upon us and with them, lots of opportunities to get out and enjoy the best that the city has to offer. Of course, you can head to the Country Club Plaza to Zona Rosa
experience the world-famous lights, but there’s no need to join the crowd to get in the holiday spirit. There’s plenty to do right here in the Northland. Check out a few of our favorites and make some new holiday traditions of your own!

Now, the crowns are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Not only can you get photos of your kids and pets with the man in red, but you can also join Santa for a pajama party and book signing with local authors on December 6. WINTER \IN BLOOM BRIGHTEN UP YOUR AESTHETIC THIS SEASON WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT FROM KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO.

Northland Lifestyle | December 2019
KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring. CONTINUED >

TWEEDIA LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slippershaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait— in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.
RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

Northland Lifestyle | December 2019
NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.
This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
