It seems like just yesterday we were talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before

the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. Enjoy your

Kitchens are where a family’s best memories are made. Kitchens are where many of our memories take place. Even the simplest kitchen will host some of our best times and the warmest memories of friends and family. Here is a story written by my mother, who passed away this fall, about the simplest of kitchens and the happiness that she remembered there: “Our first apartment was a small, old but affordable walk-up. Although it left much to be desired, as newly-weds we were satisfied and even excited about moving in — except for the kitchen! It contained only one cabinet, which was situated above the sink and its exposed pipes. We improvised by buying a large standing cabinet and sewing a floral fabric to elastic and wrapping it around the sink. The area under the sink could now be used as storage space for cleaning products, pots and pans, etc. When our first baby began toddling around, it became his favorite destination. He enjoyed crashing through the curtain, playing with the pots and pans, and eating the soap powder. I could not wait to escape from this hazardous kitchen. Eventually we converted the space to a toy area where he sat playing with his cars, trucks and blocks. In fact, that’s where he said his first word, which was ‘car’.

One night, my husband arrived home from work with a bottle of champagne and wonderful news. He had just received a big promotion and a very substantial salary increase. While eating dinner at our little kitchen table with the baby next to us in his high chair, we toasted to his new job and our new house. It is now more than 50 years later and I still remember that antiquated kitchen and the joy and happiness we experienced in it.” Jean McAlary passed away in October, but the little boy under the sink still loves kitchens and is, of course, the founder of Main Line Kitchen Design. Hoping all our kitchens bring our customers the kind of joyful memories my mother’s 1960s kitchen brought her. And as Julia Child, who passed 17 years ago, said...

P

ET PARENTS HAVE A NEW, CARING PARTNER FOR THEIR FUR KIDS WITHIN GLEN EAGLE SQUARE.

Heart + Paw is a pet center whose team passionately cares about cats’ and dogs’

veterinary care, grooming and daycare. They know comprehensive pet wellness goes way beyond health care.

Vincent Bradley, Heart + Paw’s CEO, says his team intentionally reimagined pet care from the ground up before they opened the Glen Mills center in September. “Starting with a blank canvas and the objective to create a destination experience for healthier, happier pets, Heart + Paw has brought the best of everything a pet needs under one roof. We’re also redesigning the experience for pet parents and our teams through our spaces, services, tools and technologies,” he says. He says they put pets and parents at the focus of a low-stress wellness experience,

HEART + PAW GLEN MILLS The Heart + Paw mobile app and website enable pet parents to schedule services and communicate with pet care experts. The team offers a wide range of services, including veterinary care,

designed within guidance from the latest research on calm pet handling. “From the separate dog and cat waiting rooms to the cat exam shelves designed by our

best for pets and their parents,” Vincent assures. “We know pet parents are busy, and while they want the best for their pets, convenience is also a critical factor. Access–from convenient locations to our digital tools–is an essential pillar of our brand. Glen Mills was the perfect choice for its proximity to other elevated retail offerings and its convenient freeway access, which makes it easy for pet parents to stop in on their way to work or school, or drop off their four-legged family members while they run errands.” Vincent says launching Heart + Paw in Glen Mills was a well-thought-out decision because research indicates the greater Philadelphia region has one of the largest numbers of pet owners per capita in the nation. He adds that they even customized the space and furniture to maximize the comfort and support for four-legged family members. “Choosing a color palette that animals can see, and even implementing a texting service with your animal’s veterinarian, are just some of the services Heart + Paw proudly provides its clients.” Vincent says it’s all about placing best-in-class care at pet parents’ fingertips. It s All About Community ’

DAVE’S AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR ENTERPRISES CREW DRIVES HOME THREE GENERATIONS OF NEIGHBORHOOD PROGRESS ARTICLE DOROTHY KENNEDY AND JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY JEFF ROBINSON THREE GENERATIONS OF THE SAME FAMILY HAVE BEEN STEERING A LOCAL ICONIC AUTO REPAIR BUSINESS INTO SUCCESS BASED ON THE HUMBLE START OF A DRAG RACING-ENTREPRENEURIAL OWNER AND ONE MECHANIC. And, that family is still seeking new ways to accelerate community giving because they believe in the magic of collective neighborhood support. “It’s eye-opening to see how community connections help us grow personally as well as grow our business opportunities. Coming together allows us to blend great ideas and enhance community support from the inside out. Many more opportunities are available when you step outside your own business door,” says Laura Aloisio, second-generation co-owner of Dave’s Automotive Repair Enterprises (DARE), with her brother, Jonathan Aloisio. Several of the business’s current services, offerings and community interactions were made possible by DARE’s namesake, David Aloisio, fondly called Dave by those in the community. “Giving back started with my dad,” Jonathan says. “He wanted to do things for people, always.” Dave’s Automotive staffers proudly sponsor community-related events, activities or service vehicles for local nonprofits clients who have little or no resources. They assist with purchasing vehicles for clients of Friends Association, Home of the Sparrow and North Star of Chester County. The shop also keeps the buses of The Arc of Chester County in tip-top shape so drivers can pick up children 14

and adults with intellectual developmental disabilities and autism and transport them to the center to receive services. David Aloisio, who sadly passed away in February at Neighborhood Hospice, no doubt would be proud of what’s still occurring at the shop—especially the original, innovative type of initiatives—because he liked creating things from the ground up. He enjoyed performance cars and started building engines as a teenager while growing up in Brooklyn, New York. In 1976, his dream of having his own business became a reality when he opened DARE on Gay Street in West Chester. Today, Jonathan and Laura own and operate the business at 301 S. Bolmar St. David "Dave" Aloisio (center) with Laura, Jonathan and grandsons J.T. (left) and Chris (right).

Members of the Aloisio third generation, Jonathan’s sons, J.T., Tyler and Christopher, join them in carrying on David’s legacy of putting family first, providing outstanding customer service and customer satisfaction, and giving back to the West Chester community. “We take pride in being a family-owned business,” Laura says. “Our family values extend throughout the shop to our technicians and across the counter to our customers. We’re proud to create local jobs and partner with other local businesses and organizations. Our company is a vehicle for positive change in our own lives and in our community.” Working hard for positive outcomes has long been a goal threaded throughout this auto business. David, a Vietnam War veteran, was discharged with honors from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1967. That year, he got married and moved to Kennett Square, his wife’s hometown. He co-owned Blitz Automotive in Kennett Square, then worked at K&G Speed Shop before opening DARE. While repairing cars and rebuilding engines, often alone, David’s business grew quickly, CONTINUED >

and he soon needed additional employees and a larger space. DARE moved to its present location at the corner of Bolmar and Union streets in 1979. Jonathan, gifted with his father’s mechanical skills, began working in the shop in 1984 when he was in high school. Laura joined them in 1998, bringing her considerable talents for organizing, managing and marketing. Laura says their father was a calculated risk-taker and understood the potential of good ideas when she and Jonathan presented them to him. “Dad was open to letting things happen and to be explored,” she adds. As the firm’s technical visionary, Jonathan saw the potential for expanding services. Unlike some business owners who balk when the next generation suggests changes, David was very receptive to Jonathan’s ideas—and to both his and Laura’s ability to follow through and manage the new service when it was up and running. In 1998, Jonathan’s Auto Outlet, a full-service dealership, was born. Buying and selling cars to customers and to the public, Jonathan discovered a niche in the market, and sales grew from 10 cars a month to 40 cars a month. The addition of titling services and local financing brought the auto outlet business full circle. The addition of a full-service detail shop, Between the Seats Detailing, offers its customers a “one-stop shop” for automotive needs. As evidence of the company’s success and its dedication to the West Chester community, DARE was named “Business of the Year” in 2012 by the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce. In 2018, Dave completed 10 years as a member of the board of the West Chester Area YMCA. For his dedication to West Chester, he received the Gary R. Green Community Impact Award. Laura since joined the YMCA board, maintaining their family’s commitment. Despite David’s passing, Jonathan says he still feels his father’s presence. “I worked side by side with him 10 hours a day for 30 years,” he says. “Even when he retired, I talked to him every day. I don’t remember ever not being here with him.” Jonathan and Laura both say they’re determined to keep pushing toward “making things happen” for both their family business and for being a responsive community business partner. “It’s truly rewarding when we determine how to put new ideas and assistance into play,” Laura says. 610.696.7153, DAREAuto.com

STICKING HATCHETS WEST CHESTER AX-THROWING LOCATION OPENS

AX-THROWING FANS ARE HAPPY DECEMBER IS HERE BECAUSE A NEW LOCATION FOR THEM AND FELLOW AX-PERTS OPENED IN WEST CHESTER. Stumpy’s Hatchet House launched with plenty of ax-tion on 706 E. Market St. “It’s like darts on steroids. It’s tremendously exciting,” explains Brad Wurtz, co-owner of Stumpy’s, along with Dave Rzepski. Customers at Stumpy’s, who must be at least 21 years old, are surrounded by string lights, large leather couches to relax on during and between games, club chairs, picnic tables, Jenga sets, a jukebox and billiards. These other options also give non-throwers plenty of other activities from which to choose when not watching throwers. The 7,000-square-foot location comfortably seats 100 people. It has eight throwing pits that allow for 10 people per pit. Brad says Stumpy’s is a high-end atmosphere. He adds that the business is the first establishment in West Chester to have a stateof-the-art, pour-your-own beer wall. Customers register their credit card as a tab with the beer attendant. There are 16 unique beers on tap on the wall, and customers can drink any beer in any quantity, as little as 2 ounces. “We will be working with local brewers to feature their beers as well,” Dave adds. The soft pine wood comprising the targets keeps the hatchets from bouncing too far back. Patrons are guided by throwing coaches. Throwing a hatchet accurately doesn’t take brute strength, Brad claims. He adds that due to women’s precision techniques, they often throw more accurately than men. After about 15 to 30 minutes, most Stumpy’s guests are hitting the target and honing in on the bull’s-eye. When the group feels ready, they can try a variety of hatchet throwing games; instructions are in each pit, or one can request assistance from a throwing coach. 18

West Chester Lifestyle | December 2019

fun fact

Every patron who hits a bull'seye at Stumpy's Hatchet House must ring the special West Chester victory bell.

Brad says the new business is operated by 20 part-time employees and two full-time employees, who all take safety seriously. Each patron must go through a training session. Leagues and tournaments are being formed this month into January, just in time for the holidays. Pricing for 1 hour (one to four people) is $24.99 and for 2 hours (four to 10 people) it is $39.99. Non-throwers are $15 each. Private throwing parties for the holidays already are filling up. Brad says they’re fast becoming a go-to spot for company team building, bachelor/bachelorette parties, divorce celebrations and even baby gender reveals. “We have black balloons in front of the target with either pink or blue glitter inside, and the gender is obvious when someone pops the balloons with a hatchet,” he adds. “We’re here to get people out of their normal comfort zones and help create incredible memories.”

The first ax-throwing bar in North America is believed to have started in Toronto in 2011. Founded in 2015, Stumpy’s is a popular chain with locations around the country. Dave and Brad are partners of a Stumpy’s ownership group opening five Stumpy’s Hatchet Houses in total, all in upscale retail locations. 484.630.0111, StumpysWC.com info@StumpysWC.com December 2019 | West Chester Lifestyle

GREAT IDEAS PLUS UNIQUE WRAPPING TIPS

GIFT WRAPPING HELPS SET THE TONE FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON, GIVEN IT’S OFTEN THE FIRST IMPRESSION THAT GIFTS MAKE AS THEY SIT UNDER A CHRISTMAS TREE OR ON A HANUKKAH FIREPLACE MANTEL. Creative packaging can really add to the excitement and anticipation of the sharing season. So, following are a few new tips for gift wrapping to accompany the 2019 West Chester Lifestyle Holiday Gift Guide. + Make branch clippings that drop from Christmas trees into natural gift toppers instead of bows. Pine branches, holly sprigs, pine cones or kumquats also could added, particularly if wrapping in plain brown parcel paper. + Use double-sided tape to add some pizzazz to the outside of one-colored, perhaps understated, gift boxes. + Turn burned out bulbs from holiday lights into 3D details on top of gift tags. + Spray packages or bags with a light, holiday fragrance. + The traditional Japanese way of wrapping gifts or personal belongings in special cloth, furoshiki, looks pristine and can be reused, so it’s ecologically green, too. + Place gifts cards in multi-folded, sturdy cookie envelopes/packages sealed with special stickers. + Consult with the team at Norman’s Hallmark Shop, 919 Paoli Pike in West Chester, for further ideas. This year, consider fine products from the following community retail leaders: + Benjamin Lovell Shoes: 525 Glen Eagle Square, 610.358.0060. + Éclat Chocolate: 24 S. High St., 610.692.5206. + Heart + Paw Pet Care Center: 479 Route 202, 610.783.3117. + Phineas Gage – Men’s Clothing: 29 S. High St., 484.266.7344. + Sunset Hill Jewelers: 23 N. NATURAL WEIGHT LOSS ACCOMPANIED BY BETTER SLEEP, IMPROVED MOODS AND INCREASED ENERGY IS TRULY ATTAINABLE, WITH GOAL-ACHIEVING GUIDANCE JUST A LOCAL CONSULTATION AWAY WITH A NEW BEBALANCED TEAM. Linda Barilani, franchise owner of BeBalanced Hormone Weight Lost Center of West Chester, says her decision to open this business came after she personally went through the program. “At the time, I was struggling with added weight, hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia, which all disappeared due to the BeBalanced program. Truly, I was amazed and delighted in the results,” she recalls. So, in 2017 she opened BeBalanced Wyomissing, along with her husband and business partner, Roger. In August, they launched their second BeBalanced location in West Chester. “It’s amazing what our multifaceted program encompasses and how effective it is. We stand alone when it comes to lasting, healthy results,” Linda says. As a consummate student regarding homeopathic ways to heal and treat oneself, Linda says her true passion lies in natural products and remedies. She says it’s possible to balance hormones naturally, without the use of prescriptions or hormone therapy. “There are no meals to buy, no powders to drink, and no exercise needed. Just a whole-foods diet and our proprietary, all-natural, hormone-balancing supplements, oneon-one coaching, and relaxation tools to help you stress less and enjoy life more,” she adds. “My family eats whole and healthy foods and takes great care of themselves. Both of my sons have become naturalists through this process.” Linda says individual weight-loss programs can be established even during holiday seasons. “We work with each client to discuss their schedules and come up with plans to work around special events and even for New Year’s resolutions,” she adds. BeBalanced founder Dawn Cutillo authored a book called The Hormone Shift and is a sought-after guest on television news programs regarding issues of hormone health, anti-aging, sexuality, weight loss, detoxification and stress management.
