RAY. When thinking of ideas for our Arts + Makers edition, we were inspired by the talented local creatives who beautify our community with their work. Whether it’s local theater performances, the Lake Murray arts scene or handmade goods from local artisans, we were inspired by the creative culture with which our city is bursting. We also honor the intricate nature and artistry of outdoor weddings by talking with my daughter and beautiful bride, Alexandra, who just braved the elements when she married her beau, Brian. She shares valuable tips for executing successful outdoor events. Some of our favorite arts-related things to experience around the area include the delicate little treasures made at One Eared Cow Glass Art. A QuikTrip, commonly called QT, gas station and convenience store is being added at the corner of Glassmaster Road and South Lake Dr., replacing three rundown buildings located on that property. The former buildings housed a gas station, Hardee’s and an independent restaurant/bar. In 2012, QuikTrip began an initiative of offering fresh food made daily at its own bakery and commissary referred to as QT Kitchens. The products includes fresh sandwiches, wraps, salads, fruit and various pastries made and delivered daily. Since then, QuikTrip expanded the "QT Kitchens" brand to include actual kitchens in their stores with made-to-order hot food as well as specialty drinks. The first QuikTrip store opened in a Tulsa, Okla., strip mall in 1958, which sold a limited selection of groceries with high prices for the convenience. The chain grew rapidly, opening its first store outside Tulsa in 1964, expanding to Missouri in 1971

NEW WEST COLUMBIA TOWNHOMES SLATED FOR FALL COMPLETION Developer Bill Bradshaw is constructing "Flow 2," which consists of 12 townhomes overlooking the Congaree River near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Meeting Street in West Columbia. Homes should be ready for owners to move in by November 2020, according to a news release from the developer. Flow 2 is located on the West Columbia Riverwalk and is adjacent to West Columbia’s River District, which features an array of new and established restaurants, galleries and boutiques. The area also has an interactive art park, and a second park that’s an all-inclusive one for children of all abilities. “This whole area is just booming,” Bill says. “It’s the hottest part of the Midlands, without question. We're looking for people who want the lifestyle of being close to town, who don’t want to hassle with a lot of maintenance, who want the convenience of being able to walk to five or six restaurants, and to the gym. It is in-town living with a beautiful view.”

ARTIST’S PALETTE

DRAWING EVERY DAY SELF-TAUGHT IRMO ARTIST SPREADS CHEER IN COMMUNITY

WHILE IRMO RESIDENT JOE JAVIS GETS PAID FOR HIS COMMISSIONED ARTWORK, HE LOVES TO DRAW SOUTH CAROLINA CHURCHES FREE OF CHARGE. “I usually draw and frame them, then early on Sunday mornings I set them on the door steps of the church. My goal is to draw most of the churches in South Carolina, if not all of them. There’s a lot of churches,” he admits with a grin. Joe mostly draws animals, portraits, castles, babies, cars, houses and scenery. He’s been drawing since he was 6 years old. “I didn’t know I could do it until one day I just did,” he remembers. “People said my first couple of drawings were really good, however I kept the ones after that to myself because I didn’t want to feel like I was bragging. Then, I realized drawing cartoons for kids could be inspiring and make them happy.” He received his first compensation for his art when he was a ripe old 12 years of age. His artwork was recently displayed at the Irmo Branch Library on St. Andrews Road in Columbia, as well as the Lexington County Public Library. While he used to also use charcoal to create sketches, he returned to only doing pencil renderings. “You can get so much detail with pencils. In fact, I spent 300 hours doing an Elvis sketch for a woman, with 3 hours on his lips alone. I want my drawings to look like you can touch and feel the details,” he says.

Joe now receives drawing requests from around the globe. He’s known locally for drawing cartoons or animals for fussy children in waiting lines, eliciting smiles instead of frowns as everyone searches for new ways to increase patience levels. “I hope I’m motivating children to draw on their own,” he confirms. EXQUISITE GLASS ART

SPECIAL VALENTINE'S DAY FINDS AWAIT AT ONE EARED GLASS COW

“WE CATER TO WHAT CUSTOMERS NEED OR WANT, ALONG WITH PROVIDING UNIQUE, HIGH QUALITY AND AFFORDABLE BLOWN GLASS ART.”

TUCKED WITHIN COLUMBIA’S DOWNTOWN HISTORIC VISTA IS A MAGICAL PLACE AT WHICH NEW AND DELICATE ITEMS ARE CREATED EACH DAY. It’s a place that draws art enthusiasts into its core, embracing and embodying their admiration for one-ofa-kind creations. Handblown glass treasures have put the One Eared Glass Cow Inc. studio and gallery on the map of marvelous art finds since 1991. “We cater to what customers need or want, along with providing unique, high quality and affordable blown glass art,” says founder and chief executive officer Tom Lockart, a former University of South Carolina art student. Among the studio’s glass gems can be found acorns, bird feeders, bowls, chandeliers, glasses, floor lamps, flowers, lighting, leaves, ornaments, outdoor art paperweights, sculptures and wine stoppers. Of course, South Carolina-specific items, such as palmetto trees, magnolia, pineapples, the crescent, pine cones, the Carolina Jessamine, cotton bolls and magnolia seed pods, also are created by born and raised Southern artists. Coming from a drawing and painting background, Tom expanded into glass art while at USC, even becoming a teacher’s assistant for that program. “I had no idea glass art existed there to the extent it did, and this program was only offered for about five years. But it was an art form that quickly caught my interest and became a passion,” he adds. ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON

When the USC program ended, Tom and two other art gradu-

It was a very honorable project.” Tom creates other commissioned sales, based on people’s space and desired uses. “It’s fun to be creative and create art from scratch, even after 30 years,” he assures. For Valentine’s Day in particular, he says their glass flowers, especially roses and tulips, are popular for gifts. “We have quite a few heart-shaped art items, as well as ring holders that people like to give,” he adds. Tom affirms that visitors are always welcome to watch them create their works. “We’re a small, family-based business, and this community has been really supportive of us. Repeat business is phenomenal and we’re still growing. Part of our unique offering is our custom work. We will stop and discuss specifics with customers, working with them to create exactly what they envision.” The One Eared Glass Cow gallery is open year-round Monday through Friday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) 1001 Huger St. OneEaredCow.com 22

' F R E NC H - I S H ' MARDI GR AS 2020 WHERE’S THE PLACE TO BE ON THE SATURDAY BEFORE FAT TUESDAY? Why, at the Mardi Gras Columbia festival, hosted at City Roots Urban Farm, of course! Started in 2011, this annual festival is now organized by the Krewe de Columbi-Ya-Ya, a local, all-volunteer nonprofit organization, whose members are dedicated to doing charitable work and letting the good times roll since founding the festival. Committed to a benevolent mission, each Krewe member participates in the organization of the Mardi Gras parade and festival to bring the community together in an atmosphere of unity. Other Krewe events throughout the year consist of happy hours, barbecues, bacchanals, other local parades, and the annual coronation of the King and Queen of the Krewe de Columbia-Ya-Ya, held near Twelfth Night. He also owns the Bourbon whiskey bar and Cajun-Creole restaurant at 1214 N. Main St., specializing in the flavors of the Louisiana bayou. The 9th annual Mardi Gras Columbia Festival will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, in downtown Columbia’s Rosewood neighborhood. The family-friendly event will kick off with the customary neighborhood Mardi Gras parade at 11 a.m. (line-up begins at 10 a.m.), followed by a music festival 1005 Airport Blvd. from noon to 6 p.m. Admission for the music festival is $5 for adults and free for kids 12 and under; it’s free to participate in the parade. DANCE IN THE RAIN AND CLAIM THOSE SPECIAL OUTDOOR EVENTS. And, oh...get epic photos! Beautiful events, especially weddings, can be blessed with rain. Why not leverage the situation to an advantage? Lake Murray Lifestyle asked recent new bride Alex how she handled preparing for and managing an outdoor wedding on her way to becoming Mrs. Brian Hill. Following are her recommendations. YOU JUST PLANNED AN OUTDOOR WEDDING. WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR PREPARING AHEAD FOR OUTDOOR/WEATHERRELATED EVENTS? Although easier said than done, it’s all about being flexible, going with the flow, and having a lot of faith. Choosing a venue that has indoor and outdoor options is definitely an advantage. That way if Plan A doesn’t work out, you at least have options for a Plan B. If going for an outdoor event, a tent is a must, at least have one on standby if the weather isn’t looking promising. Having a great vendor team is what made all the difference for us. We had a day-of coordinator who made quick decisions on the fly and kept our best interest in mind. Our photographers were also super flexible and creative with finding good light and photo locations. WHAT CAN HOSTS/HOSTESSES DO TO ENCOURAGE GUESTS TO MAKE THE MOST OF SURPRISE WEATHER ASPECTS? Just keeping in mind the meaning of the day and trusting that it will work out. We met with our planner the week of, went through different “if” scenarios, and we fully trusted her to handle whatever came our way on the day of. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST? AND HOW OFTEN? Well, we checked it more than we want to admit, but the hard thing is that it constantly changes. I know our vendors kept a close eye on the forecast as well. It eventually came to the point where we stopped looking, and just hoped for the best. Either way, we were getting married, rain or shine! WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO WORK WITH THEIR VENDORS TO STAY FLEXIBLE/ADAPTABLE WHEN WEATHER CHANGES ONE’S PLANS? Communication and planning are key. Voice your opinions, plans, etc. Make sure vendors know what may be “deal breakers” or “must haves” during your event. Certain things may need to be sacrificed due to inclement weather, but if there are certain details that you can’t go without, make sure a key person knows. DID YOU HAVE A PLAN B AHEAD OF TIME WITH THE LOCATION YOU CHOSE AND HOW DETAILED WERE THOSE PLANS? We had a Plan B. It wasn’t a perfect plan but it at least gave us options if we needed to execute them. Having a tent was a lifesaver. We also had very kind vendors, family and friends who were willing CONTINUED >

to wipe down ceremony chairs before the start of the ceremony. Our officiant and day-of coordinator were checking the radar, and we had a slight delay for the ceremony. Once they saw a brief clearing on the radar, they decided it was “go time” and we were able to have *most* of the ceremony without rain. Some of the reception was moved inside, but overall, it went according to plan. HOW CAN YOU USE RAIN TO GET CREATIVE PHOTOS? Our photographers were fantastic. They braved the rain to help us get some memorable photos including the ones with the cute, clear umbrellas. WHAT TYPE OF PLAYFUL TECHNIQUES CAN BE INCORPORATED WHEN WEATHER CHANGES THE COURSE OF SPECIAL EVENTS? Communicating with vendors and getting them on board to help is key. Our DJ was amazing. Because we were supposed to have an outdoor reception, he set up his station under a tent (just in case), speakers, etc., as if the day was going to be clear. But once the rain came in, it worked out better than we imagined because he had already set up additional speakers inside just in case. He truly was an MVP because he was DJ-ing outside under the tent, while we were dry inside....all because of the extra speakers he had set up in advance. Thankfully, the weather later subsided and we got to join him and dance outside on the patio.

Other tips from A lex: If you’re set on an outdoor venue space, ask a lot of questions. Make sure you know what your indoor options are. Be sure to ask about tent placement as well. Some venues only allow tents of certain sizes or only allow them in certain areas. For instance, our venue would not let us use stakes in the area we wanted the tent, so instead we had to use the weighted water barrels. Not a big deal, but something we learned along the way. In the end, it’s all about celebrating with your special family and friends, so it’s important to remind yourself to live in the moment. Enjoy every part of the day because it goes by so fast!!! MAKE THE MOST OF RAINY OUTDOOR EVENTS: + Rent clear-top tent for open-air events in the rain. + Secure boots to wear as part of the 'I got this' uniform. + Enlist the help of close friends with towels to stay dry. + Keep guests comfortable, and they will follow the leads to still have fun. 30
