“

YOUR KITCHEN IS THE HEART OF YOUR HOME IS SOMETHING WE HEAR SO OFTEN. So instead of just making it function like the heart of your home, why not go a few steps further and make it feel like the heart of your home? At KBC, we believe that the aesthetics of a space and how it makes you feel are just as important as how it functions behind the scenes. Is there a family heirloom in an adjacent room that we can bring elements of into the new space we are designing? Or a collection of artifacts from world travels that deserve their own unique space in your home? It’s working with those special requests from our clients that make our designs so unique and our projects so much fun to work on. Often times at the end of a project, we feel just as emotional as our client’s do at the “final reveal”, and that’s what makes our passion for what we do continue to grow each and every day.” - Emily Miller, Certified Kitchen Designer

Savor y Salads JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER, CHECK OUT OUR FAVORITE QUICK AND EASY SALAD RECIPES

SALADS ARE A CONVENIENT WAY TO WORK IN A COUPLE OF SERVINGS OF VEGETABLES AND/OR FRUIT. You can make a green salad at home in 5 minutes. Eating salad almost every day may be one of the most healthy and simplest habits you can adopt. Cool, crunchy, and fun to eat with lots of textures, colors, and flavor, most people enjoy eating salads, even kids. You can customize them to include the fruits and vegetables that appeal to you the most, and whichever ones you have on hand. Four important health reasons to reach for a salad are for the fiber, the benefits of fruits and vegetables, to cut calories and increasing satisfaction, and to get good fats. With summer right around the corner, the warmer temperatures of May bring with it the need for refreshing and healthy dining options. What better way to kick off the season than with three of our favorite salads: Ceasar,

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing all your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables—like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks—that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a window garden for basil, cilantro, dill or thyme. In order to grow larger plants, such as tomatoes, lemons or—yes, even avocados—you’ll need some larger containers, like large pots, baskets or box planters. CONTINUED >

Carson quickly developed a love of nature. She was an avid reader who quickly began writing her own stories. By age 10 she became a published author when St. Nicholas Magazine ran a short essay she had submitted for their September 1918 issue. After finishing high school, Carson attended the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University), graduating magna cum laude in 1929. She continued her studies at the oceanographic institute at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and then at Johns Hopkins University, where she received a master’s degree in zoology. Although she intended to obtain a doctorate she was unable due to a need to support her family during the Great Depression. Carson took a position with the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, writing radio copy for educational broadcasts. She remained there for 15 years, and in 1936 was promoted to editor-in-chief of publication for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. During this time she turned some of her government research into lyric prose. This work was eventually published in the Atlantic Monthly and titled Undersea. Years later in 1941, after expanding upon this work it was published as a book titled Under the Sea Wind. Carson continued writing over the coming years, and in 1951 published The Sea Around Us. The book won her a National Book Award, a national science writing-prize, and a Guggenheim grant. In the mid-1940s Carson had become concerned about the use of synthetic pesticides. After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Carson first encountered the subject of DDT. Lauded as the "insect bomb" and used during World War II, the revolutionary new pesticide had only just begun to undergo tests for safety and ecological effects. Although she had written on this subject

Most notable is perhaps The Ninth Street Bridge, which was renamed the Rachel Carson Bridge on Earth Day, April 22, 2006, after years of lobbying by Esther Barazzone, president of Chatham University. In 2019 they raised just shy of half a million dollars for the surrounding Pittsburgh community. The trailer itself was built from a retired horse trailer and comes equipped with two brass tap towers capable of serving four different kegs at any one time, a live wood edge bar, and Edison bulb sconces for a perfect ambiance and rustic elegance.
