Letter from the Editor ART COMES IN MANY FORMS, AND IT GIVES US A GLIMPSE OF SOMEONE’S HEART —THE PART OF THEM WE DON’T SEE ON THE SURFACE. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that

piece of who they are expressed in their work. Our February issue is dedicated to artisans and makers. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope that you too are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies and special interests fall to the wayside. I have learned that I have to be very deliberate about allowing myself time to pour into interests that I love and that fill me up.

MOLDING A BUSINESS IN T HE ARTS CHENTELL SHANNON DEVELOPED WHAT SHE DESCRIBES AS AN UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO PURSUING A CAREER IN CERAMICS DURING HER HIGH SCHOOL DAYS ON THE HAWAIIAN ISLAND OF MAUI. She’s always understood the challenges of making a living in the arts, but she has successfully turned it into a career here in the Midwest. Today, her business—Convivial Production—is the result of her efforts. Yet creating and selling timeless ceramic pieces is only part of the vision Shannon has for her business. She is also work-

ing to create jobs in the arts so others can enjoy it as a career. After developing an interest in ceramics, she moved to the mainland United States to attend Wheaton College in Chicago. While she studied different art forms, ceramics continued to remain her primary interest. Once she graduated, her now-husband suggested

Kansas City as an attractive place for an aspiring artist. “I think ceramics is cathartic,” Shannon says. “Working with your hands and being repetitious with movements is relieving for the mind and soul.” After moving to Kansas City in 2013, she began making products and determining if the area would be a good fit for her plans. She decided to stay and worked out of different studios for a time before she began renting a small space in the back of a construction warehouse. Fast forward a number of years CONTINUED >

and she now has a large studio in the West Bottoms. Additionally, her staff has also grown to four full-time positions and five part-time positions. Shannon describes her style as minimalist and clean, and she crafts products for the home, table and garden categories. She says her intention is to be timeless in style and for her products to be functional enough to use every day. Many products and artists chase trends, but Shannon says she has a commitment to not browse what others are producing. She wants to create unique products, and she doesn’t follow trend reports. Candles have become a large seller for the company, and she has also recently released a new collection of products in all three categories that feature a grittier sand-colored stoneware clay body. Many of her other products come in ivory. Convivial Production products have been sold all throughout the United States in more than 250 retail stores that have participated in the wholesale program. The business is also expanding a restaurant line at local venues such as Messenger Café and Fox and Pearl. One of the latest avenues of growth for the business is the opening of a retail store, which will be housed in the former YJ’s Snack Bar location in the Crossroads District. This store is expected to open in March and will be a garden concept with ceramic pieces for the outdoors as well as a botanical gift shop. “We wanted to take on the challenge of redoing the space, honoring it and creating a neighborhood shop,” she says. She says she doesn’t have any immediate plans to open another retail space as she says she isn’t chasing growth for the sake of chasing growth. If she opens additional retail stores, she says she would likely offer something different as she doesn’t want to repeat the same offerings in multiple locations. “As a consumer, I love variety,” she says. “We are committed to being thoughtful about what we are creating.” Shannon wants to be able to showcase to the public what goes into making her products. She has also made the decision to use more local, grassroots and non-traditional marketing, which she has done through efforts such as creating a mural in honor of the West Bottoms. Overall, Chentell Shannon wants her products to encourage conviviality just as the company name suggests. After all, using her creations to help create a friendly, lively and enjoyable atmosphere around good company is another reason why she enjoys ceramics. February 2020 | Leawood Lifestyle

AWARD-WINNING SMALL BATCH CHOCOLATES

ARTICLE ALLISON SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS

Leawood Lifestyle | February 2020

PANACHE CHOCOLATIER IS KNOWN FOR ITS AWARD-WINNING SMALL BATCH CHOCOLATES MADE WITH THE HIGHEST QUALITY INGREDIENTS AND UNIQUE FLAVORS. Julie and Derrick House relocated Panache in November 2019 from the Country Club Plaza to Park Place, Leawood’s upscale shopping destination. “Panache Chocolatier has been a Kansas City favorite since 1979, featuring popular items like chocolate-covered popcorn, chocolate flakes and European truffles,” Julie House says. “We bought the store in the fall of 2013 and began the transformation of Panache into a boutique chocolate experience. Through our travels and retail research, we found that customers enjoyed not only shopping, but experiencing and creating memories. Making Panache experiential was a priority.” In the dictionary, panache is defined as a dash or flamboyance in style and action. The name of the chocolatier plays on this meaning, but with a twist. “Panache is French in definition, meaning with flair. Our flair isn’t necessarily the flamboyant exterior of the chocolate in using sprays or pre-made decals like you see in many chocolates today. We approach our chocolates by utilizing fresh ingredients and not adding preservatives or dyes—our flair is our artisan and exceptional flavors, which has won us awards on the international stage!” Master Chocolatier Mallory Baxter and the Houses developed and created their classic, signature and premier Panache chocolates. If it’s your first time in, Julie suggests starting with one of their most popular desserts: truffles. “We highly recommend any of our truffles— there’s so many award-winning ones to try, and the classics are always popular. In addition, our black pepper pistachio bar recently won gold. We are ranked as a master chocolatier and top 15 in the United States. We currently offer the highest-ranked chocolates in the Midwest region, which feature our truffles and bars.” While chocolate is a must on Valentine’s Day, Panache’s chocolates are sure to stand out among the rest, earning medals from The International Chocolate Salon headquartered in San Francisco. “We will be featuring our 2019 five star and five gold medal award-winning collection “Share the Love” in addition to our new Valentine’s Day collection,” House says.

panache chocolate mousse 4 servings Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour

I n g r e d i e n ts + 1 1/2 cups cold heavy cream, divided + 2 dark chocolate Panache bars (6 ounces), chopped + Garnish (optional): 1 dark chocolate Panache bar; grated chocolate

I n st r u ct i o n s 01 Warm 1/2 cup cream and use it to melt the chocolate. Heat 1/2 cup of the cream in a microwave-safe bowl for 1 minute. Add chopped Panache chocolate and stir to combine. Set the bowl aside for 5 minutes for the chocolate to melt. 02 Whisk the chocolate and cream together until smooth. Set aside to cool while you whip the remaining cream. 03 Beat the remaining cream to medium peaks. Place the remaining 1 cup cold cream in a medium bowl. Beat with an electric hand mixer or with a whisk by hand until soft peaks form. Transfer 1/2 cup whipped cream to a small bowl and refrigerate for topping the finished mousse before serving. Continue whipping the remaining whipped cream until stiff peaks form. 04 Fold the whipped cream into the cooled chocolate mixture with a large spatula in three additions. Work swiftly and gently, and don’t stress if there are streaks of cream in the chocolate mousse. 05 Portion the mousse and chill before serving. Divide the mixture between four ramekins or cocktail glasses. Refrigerate at least 1 hour and up to 4 before serving. Dollop with the reserved softly whipped cream and sprinkle with grated chocolate.

REKINDLE YOUR LOVE FOR REAL BOOKSÂ

Leawood Lifestyle | February 2020

ARTICLE LISA MOYER WE CAN ALL RECALL THE SCENE IN THE 1998 MOVIE, “YOU’VE GOT MAIL” WHERE MEG RYAN DRAGS HER SAD LITTLE INDIE BOOKSTORE DOORBELL DOWN THE DESERTED STREET AFTER BEING FORCED OUT OF BUSINESS BY TOM HANKS’ BIG BAD BOOKSTORE. It’s now 2020, and that bookstore market has seen its share of plot twists: Independents have been gobbled by Borders bookstores who’ve been gobbled by Barnes & Noble who’ve been henpecked by Amazon who’s now opening its own physical bookstores across the country. It’s been a tumultuous ride, but the good news for bibliophiles is that real books are an actual trendy thing again. For the past several years, independent bookstores have been thriving, and print sales are rising while e-book sales are declining. According to the American Booksellers Association (ABA), independent booksellers are doing better overall and trending upward. Even Barnes & Noble, the largest bookstore chain in the U.S., might be rescued. It was recently acquired by the hedge fund Elliott Advisors in a move that publishers and agents hope will save the giant from collapse. Analysts believe that indie bookstores are doing better because customers are making a conscious effort to support local stores. Customers have developed a fondness and a connection to their favorite indies where they have fostered relationships with owners, staff and fellow devotees – people who also appreciate the experience of real books, touching them, smelling them, toting them, discussing them, showcasing them or passing them on. Social media has also become instrumental in building relationships and helping indie sales. The ABA states that bookstore membership has grown, helped by the fact that more people are reading printed books than electronic versions. It states that “indie booksellers remain a resilient and entrepreneurial group, and independent bookstores offer a unique and unparalleled opportunity for the discovery of new authors and great writing.” Locally, booklovers can frequent a variety of sites (see sidebar) to discover—or rediscover— often with a coffee shop inside or at least nearby. The new 40,000 square foot building occupies two floors at the Lenexa campus and is a striking and beautiful facility to enjoy. (The Blue Valley branch is purported to be next on the list.) While he enjoys trying new styles, he does not experiment with them with an intention of mastering them. “I’ve learned to accept what my gifts are,” he says. “I try to play trumpet as good as I can. I try to tap dance as good as I can. But as I said, I don’t think my gift is to become the greatest at anything. My gift is to bring joy.” About 15 years ago, before committing to play music full-time, he held a more traditional job selling cars. Here, he discovered his motivation to continue working in music. “I tried that for a while, and I was miserable,” he says. “So, one day I just went in there, and I quit cold turkey. I went back to trying to play music, not knowing if I would be able to pay my rent, but I knew I’d be happy. And I think that’s my biggest motivation every day.” He describes his performances as “musically all over the place,” with music from artists like Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Ultimately, he wants the audience to enjoy themselves. “From the first song, I try to feel the crowd out to see who I’m dealing with. Is this mostly business people? I try to find the common denominator,” he says. “The one thing that is my goal is for us to have a good time. Whether I’m at a business function or at the Kauffman Center or at the Phoenix it doesn’t matter—from the time I hit the stage or the band stand, my goal is to help facilitate a fun evening.”
