fossil rim IF AN AFRICAN SAFARI ISN’T A PRACTICAL OPTION THIS YEAR, BUT YOUR FAMILY IS EAGER TO EMBARK ON A JUMANJI-LIKE ADVENTURE, FOSSIL RIM WILDLIFE CENTER IS THE PERFECT DESTINATION. “Fossil Rim is home to approximately 1,100 animals spanning more than 50 species on 1,800 acres,” says Marketing Associate Tye Chandler. Located near Glen Rose, Fossil Rim is not a zoo. It is a nonprofit organization seeking to save species by utilizing its vast land as a breeding facility. The many animals housed there have plenty of space to roam - much like their natural habitats. And visitors are able to observe and learn from the animals as they quietly explore the park. “This greater room to roam allows for herds to live together and exhibit natural behaviors. Instead of the animals being in the enclosures that you might find at a zoo, it is often a role reversal at Fossil Rim, as people are in the enclosure that is their own vehicle or they are within our guided tour vehicles,” Tye says. The animals that live in Fossil Rim’s Main Pasture have 420 acres to themselves. Giraffes and Hartmann’s mountain zebras reside in the Game Preserve, which is 266 acres. Guest vehicles travel through a total of four pastures. Some animals are more discreetly located. “We have a part of the facility called the Jim Jackson Intensive Management Area, where wolves, black rhinos, and other animals live,” Tye says. “It can only be visited by guided tour and is quieter and more secluded for animals that may need the extra privacy.”

TRAVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)
Families can enjoy self-guided tours in the comfort of their own vehicles or guided tours led by Fossil Rim employees. Visit FossilRim.org for information on which tours and amenities are being offered at the time of your visit. Driving through Fossil Rim, visitors can observe and photograph several different species of animals – many of which they may have never observed in person – including wildebeest, giraffes, scimitar-horned oryx, blackbuck, addax, Hartmann’s mountain zebras, cheetahs and sable antelope – just to name a few. Most animals, with the exception of white rhinos and cheetahs, can be given feed pellets provided by Fossil Rim. “I always recommend arriving as close to our 8:30 a.m. opening as possible,” Tye says. If guided tours are available, he highly recommends going that route. “Guided tours are better than visiting in your own vehicle because you learn more, get more animal food, can take some routes guest vehicles cannot go, and you can ask questions if you have them along the way.” As a nonprofit organization, Fossil Rim depends on visitors, members, donors, volunteers and corporate sponsors to continue its conservation efforts. For more information on how to support Fossil Rim, visit FossilRim.org/donate-2/. 18

DRIVEN BY A VISION FOR TEACHING EXCEL-
TAILORING THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE TO EACH STUDENT
For years Cameron dreamt of having his students enter into a competition. That dream became a reality this past summer when eight piano students entered Dr. Luis Sanchez’s sonatina contest hosted by Texas A&M University. Due to the COVID restrictions, the competition was online, but that made it no less exciting when all eight students received good marks. Two of his students received the highest marks possible. As with every business, COVID presented new challenges for Cameron and The Guitar Sanctuary. Unable to conduct in-person lessons mid March through May, The Guitar Sanctuary turned to online lessons using Discord for audiovisual capabilities. Cameron says that the success of online lessons was possible with the support of The Guitar Sanctuary and a strong commitment from students and parents. After the restrictions were lifted, in-person lessons resumed. But there is still a place for virtual lessons. Some of Cameron’s students continue with virtual lessons, and many use the online option for make-up lessons. Cameron says that he continues to be impressed every day by his students. Many go above and beyond what he asks because they have fallen in love with music. Some will come to their lessons with a piece of music they have composed themselves. These are a couple of examples of why Cameron chose teaching over composing or doing gig work. It’s gratifying for him to be a part of the progress his students are making. Cameron’s message to all parents is to add music lessons to your child’s academic curriculum. They will

learn more than just how to play an instrument. They will understand how to manage their time and gain the confidence necessary to perform in front of people. Both skills are critical as they advance to the workplace in their adult lives. Cameron is committed to helping the next generation grow and flourish through the skills they learn from playing an instrument. “ C i t y H o u s e d i d n’ t give up on me!” A CRISIS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE, WE’RE HERE TO HELP.
JOHN WAS 18 WHEN HE FIRST CAME TO CITY HOUSE. Raised in an unstable home environment, John knew he needed outside help to move forward in his adult life. It wasn’t easy, though. John experienced a few setbacks along the way, but City House was there each time to help him start again. Over a few years, John acquired the life-skills and tools required to overcome the obstacles in his life at the Transitional Living Program division of City House. But most importantly, John received the encouragement he needed to keep moving forward and try again. “At City House, I learned how to be accountable and responsible. I got a job and learned how to save money. Best of all, everyone cared enough to understand me because they always listened to me…”

McKinney + Prosper Lifestyle | October 2020
Sheri Messer, CEO
Recently the staff at City House sent John off with air hugs as John boarded a Greyhound bus to start fresh in a new city with a new job. John’s story is one of the thousands in City House’s long history of transforming the lives of at-risk children, youth, and young adults. Founded in 1988 by PISD school counselor Nancy Boyd and educator Kay Goodman, the mission of City House is to protect, empower and transform the lives of at-risk children, youth, and young adults (newborn to 24 years), suffering from abuse, neglect or homelessness. What began as a 6-bed teen shelter has grown into a 48-bed multi-faceted agency. The agency operates a children’s emergency shelter, three transitional living homes, and free individual and family counseling services. It also runs a Street Outreach Program, and a Youth Resource and Community Outreach Center. City House is the only emergency shelter in Collin County that serves children birth to 17 years of age. Currently, 80% of their beneficiaries come from the Dallas
Lynn Bergman, Director of Development
and Collin County areas, but some come from cities much further away. Seventy to seventy-five percent of youth come to City House through Child Protective Services, and 25% are runaways. City House also finds at-risk youth and young adults through their Street Outreach Program. The Street Outreach team drives and walks the streets in known “hotspots” and other areas where youth and young adults congregate. The team distributes food, clothing, hygiene products, and resource information to build rapport, so these youth will eventually agree to come to the City House facility to get help. Relationships are critical for the effectiveness of the program. City House also partners with Quick Trip gas stations to find youth who need their services. Quick Trip posts a yellow “Safe Place” sign in the window of its gas stations listing the City House contact information. A recent Safe Place success story involves a girl in the Denton county area who found City House from a Quick Trip sign. Through family counseling and additional City House resources, she and her family are reunited in a healthy environment. COVID-19 has only increased the desperate situation

gains a complete understanding of them and their situation. Each individual is then given a case manager who customizes their program and regularly meets with them to gauge their progress during their stay. All programs and assistance are treated as a partnership between City House and the client. Every program is client-based and driven. The programs consist of life-skills training, as well as enrichment and social activities. City House provides a balance so that clients feel connected to one another while they learn and have fun together. There are, however, rules and criteria that must be followed for the clients to receive assistance. For example, in the Transitional Living Program, clients are required to either be working, attending school, or volunteering 50 hours a week to participate. There is a curfew as well. Participants learn how to manage their money and are required to save so that they will have a nest egg built up to start their new life when they leave. I recently had the opportunity to speak with CEO Sheri Messer and Director of Development, Lynn Bergman, about City House. Both came to City House as volunteers. Both continue to serve because of their firm belief that the youth served by City House is the most vulnerable of our community. Messer says, “They didn’t choose to be born into their situation.” Bergman further states that, “If they don’t receive help, many of them are headed to the judicial system.” The services offered by City House change the narrative, equipping and empowering at-risk kids to transform into independent contributing citizens of our community. Because of COVID, City House had to cancel its annual spring fund-raising event, placing City House and the clients it serves in a desperate financial situation. Preparations for a fall unGala are being made, and they need your help! To learn more or donate, visit their website at, www.cityhouse.org. Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!
+
Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!
+
You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.
