A Nation United DEAR FRIENDS, The world has changed. We are experiencing history in a way that none of us could have anticipated three months ago. As I type this, we are two weeks into our stay at home order. I haven’t been to Target in nearly a month. I spent my birthday at home with my family but not my parents for the first time in 40 years. We picked up Thai food (thanks, Spices!) and enjoyed each other at home. It was lovely but not what anyone expected.

In the nearly nine years that I’ve overseen Northland Lifestyle, I’ve never had an issue like this. We were able to shoot one story before the lockdown, and I’m so glad that I got to spend an hour talking to the inspiring and determined Brandy Reed. Other than that, this issue is made up of YOU. Your businesses, your photos, your tenacity, and your drive are the soul of this issue. So the May issue looks a little different but that’s not a bad thing. As we all struggle to adjust to the new standard (homeschooling, anyone?), we’ve discovered the complex interweavings of our neighborhoods. We are an area made of compassionate, kind people that are all doing what we can to keep each other safe.

Thank you to the people working so that I can have those privileged revelations--nurses, doctors, firefighters, police, EMTs, teachers, pastors, grocery workers, transit professionals, delivery drivers, and all of the other members of the invisible infrastructure of our society. You are true heroes and I thank you. And thank you to those of you that are doing your part and staying home. Together we are stronger, and we will overcome this challenge. Stay safe,

North Star United Methodist Church joined the ranks in 2011 as an outreach of their youth group. Baby Grace aims to meet the basic needs of parents--clothing, diapers, books, and when possible, larger equipment like cribs or strollers. To do this, they host quarterly Open House events that allow caregivers to come and pick out items for free. There’s no registration or qualification needed—only the willingness to ask for help. North Star Baby Grace is spearheaded by North Star members Beth Whitton and Lisa Henderson. What began as a youth outreach has been embraced by the congregation as a whole. “As the ministry has grown, we’ve found that there are all sorts of families that need help. There’s no age limit. As we’ve seen the opioid epidemic grow in our area, we are seeing more grandparents that are raising their grandchildren. We’ve helped some foster families that have received children that have needs,” says Henderson. Henderson says that one of the things that set Baby Grace apart is the lack of qualifications to receive aid. People have come from as far away as Atchison, KS, sometimes, says Henderson, to retain anonymity. “It’s very difficult to ask for help, and we appreciate how hard that must be. We don’t ask where they are from anymore. We just ask their names and what they need,” says Henderson. North Star Baby Grace finds resources in many places. They volunteer with the Just Between Friends consignment sale and are allowed to take what doesn’t sell to distribute for their open houses. While the current COVID-19 situation has shut down Open Houses for the foreseeable future due to lack of resources to distribute, Henderson and her team have found other ways to serve. Now, diaper drive-thrus are helping parents. The organization has forged relationships with a diaper manufacturer that allows them to purchase diapers at a discounted rate. They also take donations from Kylie’s Gift in conjunction with the Saint Luke’s Hospital Foundation. An annual wine tasting and silent auction fundraiser at Belvoir Winery each February funds the majority of the diaper costs, in addition to individual donations. Now, Henderson says that her idle hands have a purpose. Diapers are repackaged into packs of 30. Along with diapers, the team is handing out children’s Bibles that present the stories in a kid-friendly way. “My kids are grown now, so when we are all stuck at home, I have something to do--I can always repackage diapers,” she laughs. “I would love to do more, but right now, we are trying to focus on the necessities.” For more information, visit BabyGrace.org or Facebook.com/NorthStar-Baby-Grace. If you’d like to contribute to the diaper fund, please mail donations to North Star Baby Grace, 11250 N Eastern Ave, Kansas City, MO 64156. CityLifestyle.com/Northland

KEEP FIGHTING
INSPIRED BY
LOT OF THINGS THAT WOULD STAND OUT--HER MEGAWATT SMILE, HER INFECTIOUS LAUGH, OR HER STARK, DOWN TO EARTH HONESTY. She’s a wife, a mother, a scientist, and a realtor. She’s also a breast cancer survivor. While many have a connection to someone that has fought this disease, Reed’s discovery of her diagnosis was unique. After giving birth to her son, Jaxson, five years ago, Reed returned to work at the Environmental Protection Agency, where she is an environmental protection specialist. She was lucky to have a friend that had also returned to work after birth and coordinated their daily pumping breaks. “I had noticed some discomfort in my left breast, but I didn’t know if it was mastitis or something feeding related. Jax was my first child, so I was still learning. I mentioned it to my friend, and she urged me to see my OB/GYN about it. I figured it would clear up on my its, but she kept pestering me about it, and I finally went,” says Reed. Reed has a family history of cancer, so she had already had a mammogram at the age of 29. Now, after ruling out a clogged duct or mastitis, her doctor sent her for another one at age 31. She was sent immediately to the Breast Center at Saint Luke’s on the Plaza. After some unusual imaging, they sent her for ultrasound in her right breast, rather than the left. An ultrasound led to a biopsy. Which led to a diagnosis. At the age of 31, Reed was diagnosed with stage zero breast cancer. It was localized to the milk ducts in the right breast and spread from the nipple to the armpit. It came as a shock. 14

“II thought I was too young for this. I led a healthy lifestyle; I had a great pregnancy. No one else in my family had it so young. I was shocked,” says Reed. Because of the wide area that cancer effected, Reed was advised to have a mastectomy. To be proactive, she opted to have a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. At that point, chemo hadn’t been prescribed. A month after her mastectomy, the doctors had a different idea. “I was a month out from surgery; it had gone well. Then they tell me that cancer had moved from my milk ducts to the breast tissue and because it moved, now they recommended chemo. I was floored. I thought we were finished with the mastectomy, one and done, and I could move on with my life,” says Reed. She had 16 sessions of chemotherapy, finishing a week before her son’s first birthday. “The vain me was mad. I lost my hair. I had only been married a year and a half. I just had a baby. I was hormonal and vulnerable. But the staff, the nurses, the care team were amazing. I didn’t get sick. And when we finished, we had a huge birthday celebration for Jaxson’s birthday,” says Reed. After her stint in chemo, Reed opted not to get her ovaries removed. Reed yearned for a second baby, but husband, Jerron, didn’t want to risk it. “I really wanted to try for a girl, but my cancer was estrogen-driven. Jerron just said, why risk it? And people have suggested a surrogate, but to do that, you have to go through the same hormone surge. So I really struggled with that,” says Reed. “I think back to that: could I have had my eggs frozen? But that wasn’t my mindset then. The priority was just to get cancer out of my body and move on. There was a lot of information coming at me at one time. I was hormonal. I was freaked out,” says Reed. Now that Jaxson is almost six, she’s at peace with the decision. She says he seems pretty happy being in the spotlight. With a combo of cancer-inhibiting drugs, Reed was put into early menopause. She thought she was out of the woods as her fifth anniversary loomed on the calendar. Then, in November, the other shoe dropped. “I felt like the people’s champ; I beat cancer! But then four and a half years out, I didn’t. I was just so angry,” she says. The new diagnoses came after feeling pressure in her chest. She wondered if her implants had flipped the wrong way, so she checked in with her plastic surgeon. After an MRI, they found a tumor on her sternum. Now, her cancer has metastasized; it is now considered bone cancer. 16

DID YOU KNOW? 9 OUT OF 10 The tumor was small, so she underwent five radiation treatments on two lymph

nodes and the tumor itself, which is inoperable. It did shrink, and a scan in February came back clear. “I think my biggest concern is Jaxson. He’s older now. When I was first diagnosed, he was four months old. He didn’t have a clue. He knows what’s going on now, but he doesn’t really know the depth of it. And I haven’t really told him. We just try to maintain a normal life,” says Reed. Reed credits her husband for buoying her

spirits. “I feel like I’m the Debbie Downer, and he’s the optimist. He’s been very positive and supportive throughout,” says Reed. Now, the couple has plans to develop a nonprofit to celebrate survivorship. Kicks for Boobs will eventually be a sneaker ball. “We love to host parties, and his idea was to have a black-tie gala, but where everyone wears formal wear and their sneakers.

So we’ve been working on that together. It’s scheduled for October at the 28 Event Space. We are looking for sponsors for that,” she says. Despite her honesty about feelings of

anger and defeat, Reed radiates defiance and tenacity that overwhelms. As she moves past her second diagnosis, she keeps her eye on the prize--celebrating five years cancer-free and seeing her forties with her husband and son.

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN
IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since
they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

E O O W W M N H ME A N THESE FIVE WOMEN ARE WORKING HARD TO MAKE THEIR MARK
THEY SAY THAT BEHIND EVERY GREAT MAN STANDS A GREAT WOMAN. That's all well and good, but this month, we want to shine a light on women that are standing up for themselves. Meet the women who mean business, even when business is closed during a pandemic. They need our support now more than ever.
DANA LOVEL AND, D.D. S . KEARNEY DENTAL AND HIGHLAND DENTAL WHAT’S YOUR MISSION? I am a dentist at Kearney Dental and Highland Dental. Kearney Dental is a new office that opened just a little over a year ago. There are a lot of smaller towns surrounding Kansas City north with very little access to dental care, so we just wanted to bring a closer option for that growing area of Missouri. Highland Dental is an established practice in Liberty, MO. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE THIS YEAR? Going through the COVID-19 pandemic has put a halt to our daily routine. We are not the only business impacted by the pandemic, but it has been a trying time. On the bright side, our team remains healthy, and this time off has allowed us to take a break from the past year of continuous work and will refresh us for when we can return to work full time again. GIVEN A FREE FRIDAY NIGHT, WHAT’S YOUR PLAN? Friday nights are usually dinner date nights at my household. I don’t know why, but we usually end up going to a Mexican restaurant. Something about chips and salsa after a long week just makes sense.

DANIELLE KOHLER AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE
WHAT’S YOUR MISSION? I am an Agency owner for American Family Insurance, Danielle Kohler Agency LLC. I was in the process of finishing up my Business Management degree and was very interested in Real Estate. Even as a small child, I loved houses and loved the thought of working for myself. While in college, I started working in an agency as a customer service representative, and from that experience, I knew I would love to be a business owner and do it on my own. So that’s what I did. HOW HAVE YOU RISEN TO THE CHALLENGE OF THE STAY IN PLACE ORDER? I, along with our two team members, work from home. We can answer calls just as if someone is calling our agency. We can do zoom/skype calls to review quotes. We have electronic signature options for our home, auto, or life insurance; therefore, we don’t have to meet in person. WHO ARE YOUR TEAMMATES? My team starts with my Husband, Darnell Kohler. He supports me in what I want to do, and I appreciate that! I have two children, my son Kayden is nine and my daughter Kember is seven. I love to be able to show them the tools it takes to succeed in life--Have a positive attitude, work hard, love what you do, and it’s easy, and be around and work with great people. My agency currently has two team members, Jessica and Tom. Without my team members, I wouldn’t be able to run the agency successfully, nor would we be able to grow.

WHAT’S YOUR MISSION? PR Chick is a full-service PR firm, providing counsel and services to businesses and organizations on anything that impacts how the consumer sees their business. Expressive is a dream 30 years in the making. As a musician and artist, I always wanted a place of exploration and expression. Kathy Ragan (my business partner) and I had the same dream, and we leaped. We provide art and music classes, private lessons, individual sessions, parties, jam sessions, rehearsal spaces, and even recording for vocal, instrumentals, or podcasts. We do a lot in a small space! Eureka Lawns- My husband and I own this business together. Of course, I am just the back office in this one, and he gets to be the one interacting with the world. WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO DINE IN THE NORTHLAND? Paul and Jack’s Tavern is our “Cheers.” Just order an Amberite or a Cheesecake Shot and Prime Rib on the first Friday of the month. Sakae Sushi in Parkville is my favorite sushi place in town. I’ve known Sam for over 20 years, and it is amazing!. Tasty Thai is another guilty pleasure- Gra Pra Nua and Thai Beef Jerky just make me happy- or Chicken Pho! Lastly, American Fusion Cafe. I just let Chef Tito decide and am never disappointed. He even taught me to make ceviche!
SANDRA ZUERCHER CREPE KC WHAT’S YOUR MISSION? My family and I grew up on Romanian crepes. My mom would always whip up a batch for any occasion. She is the most generous and hospitable person I know; she always made sure no one left hungry. We would have this huge stack in front of us and everyone around the table just talking and enjoying each other’s company. After moving to the Northland, we wanted to keep that atmosphere going, so Crepe KC is because of her, my mom. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE AND TRIUMPH THIS YEAR? So far, the greatest triumph we’ve had this year is the response to our opening. We were (and still are) just overwhelmed with the love and support from this community. We’ve grown so much faster than we expected, and we’re so excited to keep growing and serving our community. We had to close the shop for a few weeks due to the mandatory stay at home order, but we wanted to make sure we were protecting our staff and the people around us. It was difficult to close during that time, especially having just opened in January this year. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE LEISURE ACTIVITY IN THE NORTHLAND? We love taking our kayak up to Smithville Lake when the weather is nice or just playing a round of disc golf on their course. And some of our favorite places to dine in the Northland are Gyro Grill Cafe, Hammerhand Coffee, Hawaiian Bros, and Mr. Le’s sushi.

A N D R E A D R U M RELAX AND REVIVE MASSAGE THERAPY
WHAT IS YOUR MISSION? We offer custom massage therapy to everyone of all ages. We are passionate about massage and believe in the healing power of touch and the many benefits that it provides. We focus on pain management, relaxation, self-care, and educating our clients. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE? The COVID-19 pandemic has been overwhelming. Being a small business with one employee that relies on me and not knowing what to expect next is scary. We are staying healthy and positive and ready to be there for our clients ASAP. On a better note, my greatest triumph is being voted GOLD in the Best of the Northland category of massage therapy for 2019! We are very proud and honored to have received that, especially after only being in business for one year at that point. WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE IN THE NORTHLAND? I am a foodie. My husband and I try to have daytime dates once a week and try different places to eat. Our favorite is Mexican food. There are tons of great places in the northland, but hands down, La Costa downtown on the
N + BUILD DESIGN + BUILD DESIGN + BUILD DESIGN + BUILD DESIGN + BUILD
square is my favorite place to eat.

THE NORTHLAND IS A VIBRANT, VARIED COMMUNITY FULL OF SMALL BUSINESSES WORKING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR CLIENTS’ LIVES. That’s why when we heard the news that non-essential businesses needed to close their doors, we knew that those people needed a voice. Thank you to the businesses that are innovating in an unprecedented time. (Note: All listings were submitted by the businesses themselves. This is certainly not a comprehensive list. Continue to search out your local options!)

S C R E E N L A N D A R M O U R Screenland Armour Theatre is the last remaining independent theatre in Kansas City, MO. We offer 4 digital screens, handcrafted food, an eclectic craft beer selection as well as local spirits, all conveniently located in North Kansas City. Our theatre is unable to operate in this dark time. Even when many other businesses will be able to open their doors we likely will not have new movies to show for many months with Hollywood insiders suggesting 3-6 months before releases start back-up. It’s tremendously scary considering how costly it is to run our business so we decided to do something a bit unorthodox and start a Patreon. What is a Patreon? It’s a membership-based service where you sign-up to a specific tier and we supply unique content like podcasts, live watch parties, short films and more. This helps us bring in a little bit of revenue while providing you entertainment at home. Our hope is to build a stronger film community with the platform and our audience. To sign-up visit Patreon.com/Screenland.
T H E B R I M At The Brim, we believe marriage matters, so we offer free wedding ceremonies and affordable tent receptions. In light of the recent changes in events, we'd like to offer any bride affected by the coronavirus a free outdoor wedding ceremony at The Brim (once the government mandate allows). Bring yourself, your photographer, officiant, and closest family/friends for a free, intimate ceremony- then have your reception another time! Contact us at info@thebrimkc.com for more!
F E N C E S T I L E V I N E YA R D S AND WINERY Excelsior Springs-based Fence Stile Vineyards and Winery quietly reached its 11th anniversary during the pandemic. Unable to conduct wine tastings or offer tours and events temporarily, owner-winemaker Shriti Plimpton focused on offering carryout, curbside delivery, and delivery in Kansas City. The winery developed a virtual wine tasting experience using video chat. Fence Stile’s email newsletter shifted to highlight customer relationships instead of events. Social media posts connect with guests and promote Northland retail partners, such as Bubbles Wine and Spirits and Lukas Liquor Northland, that carry its estate wines. 32

Our objective at this time is for those who have trusted us to know they are cared for, and together we will weather this storm.
IRON DISTRICT — RACHEL KENNEDY We were to re-open March 21 and serve as an incubator for our vendors trying to prove their concepts. My husband and I have three boys, aged 7, 2, and 1. First, teachers need to be paid more. Doing school work with my 1st grader is my biggest challenge. I won’t lie when I say I dread it most days. On the positive, I can see how smart my son is and how much he loves math and reading. My other challenge is balancing play, feeding, and toddler nap time with working my day job for a healthcare/IT company. We have good days and less good days, but it’s the memories that we are making that hold me together. We get to eat dinner together, have dance parties, and go for walks. My oldest has finally learned how to ride his bike too! Lindsay Freeborn
