Where my girls at? LADIES OF BRIDGEWATER, WHERE WOULD I BE WITHOUT YOU? It is during May that we, as a country, celebrate mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers; but, here at Bridgewater Lifestyle, we also want to recognize the other women who build our community and all of their roles as well. It takes a village to raise a child, and our village has women who are our children’s

teachers, doctors, first responders, law enforcement officers, authors, entertainers, nurses, social workers, counselors and so much more. When I moved to Bridgewater I was pregnant with my first child and didn’t know a soul. Upon her birth, I found a group of amazing women in the Bridgewater MOMS Club that quite literally changed my life and connected me to this fabulous community forever. I can still remember driving up to my first playdate. I had to pep talk myself to even get out of my car because I didn’t know anyone and was completely outside my comfort zone. It was these women who welcomed me with open arms and have been there for me and my family every step of the way ever since.

The women of our town are an inspiration. As the mother of three daughters, I am grateful that my girls have such positive, female role models to look up to. This month, I thank all of the women for all that you do for Bridgewater. Keep being you. helping when she founded The Center in 1998. It began in a small house in Somerville, helping expectant mothers struggling with addiction and mental health disorders. Seeing a need to extend those services after the child’s birth, Wright started fundraising. By 2008 she built two residential treatment facilities in Somerset: one for adult women who need long-term treatment for substance use and mental health disorders and their children, and one for pregnant and parenting adolescents with mental health disorders. Today, The Center provides mental health and substance use disorder treatment to more than 600 people annually, primarily women and their children impacted by trauma, abuse, and neglect. At the heart of the services is an acknowledgment that addiction is born out of trauma. Peg explains, “These women are stuck in a cycle. The trauma they have experienced is profound. Their job is to embrace the full path Founder and CEO Peg Wright

of recovery and to begin to look at the trauma that brought them to where they are in the first place.” Since its inception, The Center has risen to become a national leader in trauma-informed care, teaching its model to other programs nationwide. In the treatment center, women like Alexis work with a multi-disciplinary team to create an individual treatment program. They also learn parenting and life skills upon which they can build a healthy, sustainable life for themselves and their children. The adolescent residential program, which is licensed by the New Jersey Department of Children and Families, helps pregnant and parenting teens from across the state, many of whom have spent their lives in foster care. Since the treatment centers were launched, The Center expanded its spectrum of care to include: Katy’s Place, a child development center that offers nurturing childcare allowing women to focus on their treatment, job training or education; Roots to Recovery, an outpatient treatment program for men and women with behavioral health and substance use disorders; supportive housing; and the S.T.A.R.T. (Supportive, Trauma-attuned, Attachment-based, Recovery & Treatment) program that provides in-home parenting support, substance use disorder treatment and parent-infant mental health counseling for pregnant and parenting women. Upon completion of treatment, The Center also works to connect women to community partners for employment and education opportunities.

Owner Mason Goldberg and his family

MANY ADULTS HAVE FOND CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF SUMMER CAMP, AND MASON GOLDBERG, THE OWNER OF MEADOWBROOK COUNTRY DAY CAMP IN LONG VALLEY, IS ONE OF THEM. Camp was an important part of Mason’s childhood, starting when he first attended sleepaway camp at age six. Mason turned his love for summer camp into a year-round career and today is helping make memories for the next generation of happy campers, including his own children who sleep with their camp backpacks ready to go. Born and raised in New York City, Mason began his career in real estate and the fitness industry, but ultimately felt called to run a summer camp. “Summer camp can have such an unbelievable effect on a young child. You put all these kids together and they bond through amazing activities and great staff leadership. They find their common ground and realize they’re part of something, which truly allows them to grow and communicate,” says Mason. He continues, “At camp, you feel like you’re part of a group. It’s important to feel comfortable and CONTINUED >

THE HOME OF HAPPY CAMPERS (CONTINUED) like you’re really getting to know someone, and that someone is taking the time to get to know you.” After an extended period being homebound, summer camp is something to look forward to and is an even brighter ray of sunshine for children this summer. The beautiful 53-acre Meadowbrook serves hundreds of campers from pre-k through ninth grade and functions as Valley Brook Day School during the school year. The facility offers three heated pools, two lakes and a wide variety of activities customized to each grade level. Tiny Toons introduces pre-k and kindergarten age campers to a nurturing environment, Main Camp offers first through sixth graders a diverse group of fun activities, and the unique Travel program for seventh through ninth graders combines an in-camp experience with outside field trips. As a parent of three children ages seven, five and one, Mason understands the needs of his families. Mason explains, “I’m living and breathing exactly what every other parent is going through, and I want my children to have the most fabulous experience, make great friends and learn the TIGER philosophy.” Forming friendships that last a lifetime is one of the most important things owner Mason Goldberg wants Meadowbrook campers to experience.

TIGER, an acronym that stands for Teamwork, Integrity, Generosity, Enthusiasm and Respect, is part of the Meadowbrook culture. Being recognized by a camp counselor staff member for TIGER behavior is a compliment sure to bring a smile to the face of any camper. Structure, routine, and qualified, caring camp counselors

The Tiny Toons program introduces Meadowbrook’s youngest campers to summer camp.

contribute to the positive Meadowbrook experience. Deliberate planning goes into designing 39 unique, engaging and stimulating summer camp days. Even rainy days are fun, with activities like karaoke, dance parties and game shows in the camp’s extensive indoor and covered areas. The dedicated staff encourages the social and emotional growth of each child. Many are teachers during the school year. The Tiny Toons head counselor is also a mother. Meadowbrook’s inclusionary approach also applies to the allergy policy designed to ensure a safe experience for children with allergies or dietary restrictions. The food service director works with each family to address any individual needs. For example, last year a camper with dietary restrictions was able to participate in a chocolate-making activity because the camp deliberately provided the one type of chocolate that the camper could consume. This gave the child an opportunity to partake in something she would normally have been excluded from in other environments. Mason recalls how much that gesture meant to the family, and as a parent of a child with allergies himself, he fully understands how meaningful this is to them. Beyond the state of the art facilities and activities, Meadowbrook offers something special. The camp is grounded in attention to detail, relationships and inclusion. 1) AS A CHILD, DID YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THIS FIELD? Yes, I always wanted to be a hairstylist! I loved practicing on my Barbies...and on my two sisters. 2) IF YOU WERE A POTENTIAL CUSTOMER, WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE BEVERLY HILLS? Beverly Hills has a professional atmosphere and warmth that makes everyone feel welcome, all while providing amazing services. We listen to our guests and understand what they are looking for in the perfect cut, color or style and we educate them so they can continue to achieve their look at home. 3) WHAT MOTIVATES YOU ON A DAILY BASIS? My motivation is my children. I want to teach them that anything is possible. Hard work and pushing through the tough times makes you come out on top! 4) WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS OR TRICKS FOR SUCCESS IN BUSINESS? Take it one day at a time. I trust my employees and have open communication with them. Also, laughing is the cure to all! 5) WHY DID YOU CHOOSE MARTINSVILLE FOR YOUR BUSINESS? I was a stylist for over twenty years at Beverly Hills before purchasing the salon myself five years ago. This town is a second home to me. I love the closeness it brings. The people are absolutely amazing and my customers are my most loyal friends.

GENNA CENTOL ANZ A OWNER/HEAD TRAINER + BROOKSIDE SHOW STABLE

1) IF YOU WERE A CUSTOMER, WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO GO TO BROOKSIDE? Owning Brookside was my childhood dream. From years of experience, I took what I loved, and learned from what I was less enthusiastic about, to create a fun, safe, drama-free, family atmosphere that students want to be a part of. 2) WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS OR TRICKS FOR SUCCESS IN BUSINESS? Hard work and dedication is the key to business. You have to want to be in the equestrian industry and be willing to put in the hours and years of blood, sweat and tears. 3) HOW DO YOU MANAGE A WORK/HOME BALANCE? My career is not a job, but a lifestyle. Caring for over 25 horses, I work 12-hour days, at least six days per week. It helps to have a family who understands that I might miss some holidays because the horses don’t take a day off. 4) WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR YOUR BUSINESS? Since 2014, we have grown from six horses to over 25 and have vastly expanded our lesson program. I would like to continue with this growth and also remain a facility where students feel safe and welcome to learn how to ride and compete. I want to give them all the life lessons that come with these wonderful animals.

CHRISTINA MEERLOO OWNER/PHOTOGRAPHER + MEERLOO PHOTOGRAPHY 1) WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE THIS CAREER PATH? I chose to become a photographer because I love documenting humans and helping them to create memories. It’s my passion to capture their beauty for them. 2) HAS BEING A WOMAN CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS? My experience as a model and a woman has really allowed me to understand my clients from their point of view. My entire brand is focused around female empowerment. 3) WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE MEERLOO PHOTOGRAPHY? My expertise in posing and attention to detail from the art of boudoir compliments my wedding photography, while my extensive background in lighting and ability to think on my feet from shooting weddings, compliments my boudoir shoots. 4) WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS OR TRICKS FOR SUCCESS IN BUSINESS? Be consistent, learn how to outsource, and understand financial planning for retirement. 32
