it. Ours was the home in the neighborhood where everyone gathered. My mother and father spent countless hours tending to their beautiful gardens in spring and summer. During the holidays, my mother could have been entered into an interior design/holiday decor contest and she would have won every year. She had a designer's eye and wow, did it show. Our little home was beautiful and safe. It was clean and warm. As a child, I loved to be home. I was lucky enough to have been able to travel some in my youth. In fact, my first plane ride was a trip to Denmark, Norway and Sweden when I was 8 years old. My mother was an exchange student to Denmark in 1954 and we went to visit her exchange family. We spent 7 weeks traveling through Scandinavia, created some wonderful memories

Well, I could use some help with that, but I have put away my everything-must-be-perfect expectations and decided that a happy home doesn't always mean it has to be spotless. I still love to be home. What a joyous occasion for this family, one that was celebrated in a safe and cozy home. In addition to building homes, spending quality time with the locals and encouraging them to place their faith in God, is valuable. The team has built one church building, a place for adults and kids to worship, pray and find solitude. And in past years, a group of adults have led a Vacation Bible School for children of single mothers, giving them a similar experience that we have here at home. The five days are filled with travel, hard work and some exploring. The first day of their trip, the missionaries will arrive in Guatemala City and gather their work supplies. Vans will then transport them to San Rafael, which is a 3-hour trip. Preparation and awareness are critical when

traveling to any third world country. The church will help all of those involved know the risks and how to prevent and handle potential situations. Lodging for the missions team has varied from trip to trip. In past years, private residents and restaurants have opened their buildings for accommodations. Last year, they were blessed to stay in a new hotel that was under construction. The final day is spent exploring Antigua, one of Guatemala’s most popular and culturally rich sites. Baroque Spanish architecture decorates the city; it’s truly unlike anything we’ve seen at home. One of the most iconic landmarks is The Arco de Santa Catalina (The Arch of Santa Catalina). The bright yellow arch was constructed in the 1690s as a passage for nuns to travel from the convent to a school. As well as historic landmarks like the Arco de Santa Catalina, visitors can relish in the restaurant scene. From fine dining to street food, this experience is surely a treat after a week of hard but meaningful work. The San Rafael locals look forward to having the mission team from Peachtree City Christian Church each year, “they know the progress that will be made and the lives that will be changed,” Kadkhodaian states. “It’s truly transformational for the people in Guatemala and for us as well.” Mission trips expose you to new cultures, thus, broadening your perspective of the world. Life long memories, lessons and friendships are made on these bountiful trips. Kadkhodaian and her fellow mission team are filled with joy. “I am proud of the transformation that takes place for the people, the communities, our church and especially within each one of us.” The best piece of advice Patti Kadkhodaian has received is this, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” Luke 12:48

sundae sundays SUNDAY EVENINGS ARE SACRED FOR THE DIPIETRE FAMILY. It’s family time. It’s time when seven pairs of feet race down carpeted stairs to enter a cool, dark place where magic happens and time seems to stand still. It’s movie night at the DiPietres! The Dipietre brood are headed by Jackie and Jacob, and their five youngsters - Isabelle (15), Andrew (13), Emma (11), Alex (8), and Jack (5). They’re the new kids on the block in Peachtree City’s Stoneybrook neighborhood. Despite busy schedules, the family believes in carving out quality time together so they created movie nights. Movie time is Sunday evening after dinner. Before their special time watching movies, the family works hard to finish chores and homework so that their time together can be uninterrupted and stress-free. Ice cream is

an important part of movie night. On warmer days, Jacob loads the kids on the golf cart to pick up ice cream treats. Other Sundays, the family makes sundaes at home. A “universal” favorite is mint chocolate chip with hot fudge - yum! Children and parents don pajamas and make their way down to grab favorite spots on the Lovesac Sactional, an adjustable, sectional couch, large enough for 7! “It’s funny ‘cause everyone usually fights for their favorite spots at the beginning. By the end of the movie, everyone’s moved around to either cuddle or spread out in other directions,” Jackie said. After the movie is over, everyone helps to put things back in order - rearranging the Sactional back to its original position, folding blankets, and switching off the theater room lights. Then, off to bed! 22

DOWN MEMORY LANE DIGGERS ANTIQUES AND UNIQUES

32

Fayette County Lifestyle | March 2020

“DIGGERS DIG THE OBSCURE, THE UNUSUAL, THE BEAUTIFUL. They are not afraid of history.” - Natali Pope, co-owner of Diggers Antiques and Uniques The soulful lyrics of Pink Floyd flow through the air as I open the door. He laments, “… how I wish you were here ...“ as if calling to take me down memory lane. Behind the register, Digger’s co-owner, Terri Garner, greets me with soft blue eyes. Her long blonde strands are memorable, her hands, unmistakable. Native American Navajo jewelry of silver and turquoise encircle each of her fingers and her wrists. Her fingernails are painted in clear polish with tips to match the stones on her hands. It’s jewelry, it’s art, but more so, it’s Terri. “It’s my signature,” Terri admits, proudly. Terri lives in the heart of Fayetteville where her grandparents built their home almost 100 years ago, just a few miles away from Diggers. They were dairy farmers who raised cows and planted corn. Back then, life was simple, but rich, saturated with family ties and strong friendships. “If your neighbors were sick, you’d all be there helping them. It’s what people did. You were there for one another. Good times and bad times,” Terri explained. Ms. Lois, Terri’s mother, would heat up the iron to just the right temperature, on the only pot belly stove in the house. Then she would press the white dresses she made for her four daughters nice and flat. A pot belly stove now stands in the corner, at Diggers. Terri reminisces, “Antiques were everywhere in our home. We just didn’t know it.” Her present home is graced with Victorian furniture, including a circular bed and ornate lamps, which she finds beautiful, elegant, and “peaceful.”
