Buy vs. Rent After considering commercial space or an outbuilding on his property, Heatly discovered Garage Condos and was immediately impressed. He not only liked the idea of building equity, which a rental wouldn't provide, but found that purchasing a luxury work and storage space was a recent trend in bigger cities that hadn't been tapped into locally, until now. "I thought about it over a year, and looking at the market, the options and the cost involved, it all fell into place and made the most sense. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast-forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun.

The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So, this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you take the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends and bask in the magic of the winter season. Happy holidays, OKC!

A community meeting will be held to talk about how the iconic look of the Belle Isle Library will be preserved while giving the library some much-needed upgrades. The renovation will include adding 14,000 square feet to the library to include a larger meeting area, study rooms, children’s room, large teen space and a maker space. In addition, the library will add new furniture, more computers and more parking. “By meeting with the Belle Isle Library community, we are hoping to build excitement for the renovation and share the design,” says Julie Ballou, Metropolitan Library System's executive director. “It is our goal to create a more business-, family- and tech-friendly library that can be enjoyed for years to come while complementing the existing structure.” In fiscal year 2018, the Belle Isle Library had more than 224,000 visits. SPRE AD YOUR WINGS & DISCOVER LUXURY PRIVATE JET TRAVEL MAKES HOLIDAY TRIPS A BREEZE— AND IT'S MORE AFFORDABLE THAN YOU THINK JIM HENSLEY WAS SITTING IN A HUNTING LODGE IN SOUTH DAKOTA WORKING AS HIS CLIENTS BRAVED THE WINTER WEATHER FOR THEIR ANNUAL PHEASANT HUNT. Each year, Jim flies this group of friends to the north for the hunt. The next week, he had several flights to Dallas lined up. On another weekend, he flew a couple from Oklahoma City to Louisiana so they could catch their daughter’s soccer match.

OKC Lifestyle | December 2019

The Challenger 350 exterior.

For each of the clients he flew, convenience was more important than cost. As owner of American Jet Charter of Oklahoma City, Jim knows that less time hassling around in an airport means more quality time spent on travel, with family or on business. “We are an on-demand aircraft charter,” he says. “We have six airplanes, soon to be seven. Most of our planes seat nine people or less, but the new added airplane will seat up to 12 people.” As holiday travel heats up, booking a private plane may be the best Christmas present to yourself or for loved ones. Although more expensive than traditional commercial air flights, the luxury, ease and convenience is worth every extra penny.

Beechcraft Baron is American Jet Charter's most affordable option.

The Challenger 604 is the newest addition to the charter fleet

THE FLEE T The Citation Bravo seats up to eight passengers.

American Jet Charter started in 1986 after the oil bust in Oklahoma. Jim had worked for another aircraft company, but the bust put that company out of business. “We started this company, but we did struggle through the lean years,” he says. “But we constantly grew. Now, 34 years later, we are still adding aircraft.” American Jet Charter’s simplest and most affordable plane is the Beechcraft Baron 58. This light, twin-engine piston aircraft comfortably seats a few passengers and is a relatively inexpensive option for small groups wanting to fly within the five-state area around Oklahoma.

The Citation Encore interior is luxurious and spacious.

The King Air Turbo Prop seats up to seven and primarily flies within a 500- to 600-mile radius from Oklahoma City. The Citation Bravo seats up to eight people and is primarily used within a 1,000-mile radius. The next plane up is the Citation Encore, which is similar to the Encore, but extends a little longer. Seating eight comfortably, this plane features a club seating configuration. The Citation VII seats nine people with five identical seats, one aft-facing seat and a couch, as well as an enclosed lavatory. American Jet Charter added the Challenger 350 jet in 2019, which also seats nine. “This jet has a very large, stand-up cabin,” Jim says. The newest jet is the Challenger 604, which seats 12. The jet boasts of a wide body that allows even the tallest of passengers to stand. With nine chairs and couch seating, it’s American Jet Charter’s largest plane yet. “For a person who wants to book private air travel for vacation, you have to be able to have that extra money to spend, so it’s a luxury,” Jim says. “For the business person trying to do multiple destinations in one day and still get back home, the time savings and the ability to hit multiple locations in one day is worth it in terms of convenience and savings on productivity. Booking private jet charter for a business can save time, money and productivity.” Not having to wait in airports or go through crazy security lines is another advantage of booking a private flight. In some cases, you can even drive your car right up to the plane and have a rental car waiting at the destination. “I’m old-school when it comes to customer service,” Jim says. “The biggest advantage of booking a private jet is convenience. You can even hold business meetings on the plane, so your business really has a productivity value.” The safety of booking a private plane with American Jet Charterw is unparalleled as well. In 34 years, the business has had a perfect safety record and only uses veteran pilots. Flying private is even easier with American Jet Charter’s empty leg program. If the company flies to a destination and has an empty plane on the way back, you can buy seats at a big discount. “We are the only charter company that I know of that sells empty leg seats,” Jim says. So as air travel becomes crazy this holiday, choosing to fly charter can not only save you the headache of fighting the crowds, but also save time, productivity and peace of mind.

With such a beautiful home, Julie knew she wanted the help of an interior designer to make the space exactly what she wanted.

“SHE’S DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB OF WORKING ON THE HOUSE AND MAKING EVERYTHING COME TOGETHER.”

She read an article about Nuvo Home, an interior design boutique, and its founder, Tracee Strong. “She’s done an excellent job of working on the house and making everything come together,” Julie says. “I didn’t want too much

of a farmhouse trend or too much of a traditional trend. So that kind of steered me more toward maybe a contemporary look.” Tracee was able to take the natural elements that the windows looked out on and combine it with a fresh, contemporary look that incorporates color, angles and functionality. The two-phase interior design project makes the Smith home not only striking, but comfortable and natural as well. CONTINUED >

Platters can also be used as artwork to offset a hallway space.

A round natural wood coffeetable from Nuvo Home pays homage to the trees and woods outside.

“Phase one was the living area because they didn’t have a sofa, so it was a top priority. We found the perfect sofa from the Nuvo custom line from Black Label. Once we figured the sofa, that led to all of the rest of the design. With the beautiful wood shelving that they have, it all tied together well,” Tracee says. In addition to the living room, Tracee, owner of Nuvo Home, also designed the office, master bedroom, guest bedroom and daughter Blakely’s bedroom. The new addition of a theater room and dance practice room were phase two. “My favorite room is the master bedroom. I hardly ever leave it,” Julie says. “I just love the colors of gray, blush and teal.” The majority of the pieces in the Smith home were part of Nuvo’s custom lines. vibes that live in color. Tracee is also now taking on design clients for the spring season.

A cast resin sculpture of a tree root makes for a breathtaking console in the living area of the Smith home.

“With my consultation, I like to sit down with clients and talk, not just about the space. I talk to them about their family and what’s important to them. At the end of the day, I feel like their home is ultimately their happy place, and it should be a great reflection of who they are,” Tracee says. “I want my client to say, ‘Wow, this place looks amazing. I love it, and it looks so much like me.’ My ultimate reward is when my client says, “Yeah, I hired Tracee. She inspired me, and I love my new space.’”

“MY ULTIMATE REWARD IS WHEN MY CLIENT SAYS, “YEAH, I HIRED TRACEE. SHE INSPIRED ME, AND I LOVE MY NEW SPACE.” December 2019 | OKC Lifestyle

EYES ETC. CAPTURES THE HOTTEST STYLES OF EYEWEAR JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

OKC Lifestyle | December 2019

Etc.. “Nude colors, crystals, hot pinks, old gold and white are all trends that are back in fashion. Retro has made a big comeback, and a new style to watch is a line called Raen.” Raen has a young vibe that is just as popular with grandma as it is with the young party crowd. One big style Raen excels at are round frames, Terry says. “A lot of people don’t think they can wear round frames, but it really depends on the shape of the frame,” he says. Another popular brand that Eyes Etc. carries is the FaceAFace brand, founded in France. From light green and fuchsia combos to teal and bone, each pair is handmade in France and incorporates fun touches like colored wing corners or creative touches like high heels at the tips of the glass arms. One of Terry’s top sellers is the Sospiri brand, which specializes in hand-placed Swarovski crystals in the frames. Sospiri only creates 100 of each style, so when they are gone, they are gone. Although each piece averages $1,000 to $1,300, Eyes Etc. sells out of the styles every time. “It used to be only your grandmother wore stones and glitter,” Terry says. “That’s not the case today. Everyone is impressed by this brand, and all the crystals are hand-set by jewelers in Italy.” Rag and Bone is a newer brand, though many fashionistas may recognize the name as a popular clothing designer. Originally a jeans clothier, Rag and Bone now offers simple styles with great colors like black tortoise or navy blue. The Tom Ford and Persol lines also keep to classic, clean designs that never go out of style. “Tom Ford is simple, but he has new styles with the gold. Persol adds little touches like silver arrows on the hinge that people really like,” Terry says. CONTINUED >

But style isn’t everything. For Terry, the health and happiness of his clients are what really drives his business. He gets to know each customer and their needs and tries to educate them all about the importance of eye health and the role an ophthalmologist plays in their overall well-being. Terry has worked in the field since 1972, and he partners with one of the top retinol ophthalmologists in the field, Dr. Andrew Hubbard. Together, the two offer a full range of eye exams and eye health, but Terry says what really sets them apart from conveyor belt eye shops is the time they spend. “I’m never in a hurry. I take the time to talk to our customers about what they want, how they want to wear the glasses and what they need,” Terry says. “Each person’s facial structure requires a custom fit and having a pair of glasses directly affects the style of the wearer. It deserves time.”
