ART LIVES IN GILBERT
“TO CREATE ONES WORLD IN ANY OF THE ARTS TAKES COURAGE” - GEORGIA O’KEEFE
THIS IS ALL I DO. IT’S ALL I KNOW.”
LINDSAY BORG I’m an Arizona native and a family, editorial, wedding and high school senior portrait photographer as well as a mentor. I started photography as a hobby in 2002, but never really considered it as a career. I was just having fun and taking pretty pictures. In 2013, I found myself unemployed and looking for a change. Jumping into an over saturated market with little to no direction was scary, but I decided to give this photography thing everything I had, and the rest is history. Early on, I specialized in teen and high school senior portraits. This quickly led to editorial and styled sessions. Having artistic direction over each session was a ton of fun and a great creative outlet. Now I shoot all types of sessions. I especially love working with models in the studio and traveling out of town with couples. I have met 100’s of amazing families and clients over the past 7 years. I love making people laugh and making woman feel beautiful, even if they don’t necessary see it at the time. I treat every session as an experience, capturing the real moments of families being together and genuine interaction. I’m honored to work with Gilbert families as it’s my home too!Photography is everything to me, aside from my husband and children, it’s my entire life. I tell my students before I start mentoring them, “this is all I do. It’s all I know.” Its a part of who I am. I love my job and I love each person that has been a part of this journey with me. www.lindsayborgphoto.com

"Being an artist, I am always driven to create something beautiful. I possess the God given ability to deliver something that is aesthetically pleasing; combining different colors, textures and shapes while visualizing my future creations beginning from a free hand sketch. Nature, people’s characters, beautiful fabrics and laces inspire me to create. Designing is a lifestyle, and it is a part of my soul. I enjoy exploring something new, I love to innovate and I am inspired by famous artists, painters and designers widely recognized and appreciated. I enjoy styling people, showcasing their beautiful looks, changing their body shapes by creating attractive, fashionable and yet classy looking silhouettes. It allows me to create new cutting edge styles and designs. I feel that it is very important to apply the art of designs and aesthetics to underline the natural beauty of my customers, ether by creating a wedding dress, red carpet gowns, or prom dresses combined with haute couture accessories. My goal is always to design unique one of a kind dress, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but functional as well. Svetik was born in the USSR. MEETING NEW CHUMS HOW DID ONE LOCAL INDIE ROCK BAND ON THE RISE GET THEIR START? Well, as New Chums, of course. “The New Chums met through my Craigslist exploration. I was a singer and wanted to continue playing music when I moved to Arizona in 2013," says Seth Boyack, vocalist/guitarist for The New Chums. "I wasn’t finding what I was looking for as a singer/ guitarist, so instead of joining a band, I decided to start my own.” Along with drummer Ben Hedlund, guitarist Matt Lloyd and bassist Cassandra Clark, The New Chums were solidified in 2017—and the rest is history. Or as Seth says, they are in the process of making history. “We played main stage at a large local festival, and we were invited to play at Apache Lakes Music Festival, which is popular for Arizona bands," Matt says. "On a national level, we’ve had many placements including having our music videos being played in Journey’s nationwide and in Canada. Our song ‘Blossom’ also

made rotation on SiriusXM channel Alt Nation, which was a big thrill for us. Our song ‘Come On, Come On’ was featured in a 20 Top Summer Songs to Hear list, so those are some exciting highlights.” Cassandra says that to her, wanting people to enjoy the music they make as much as she does can be a struggle. “Like anything in life, when you pour your heart and soul into

your passion, it can be hard to accept that not everyone else will be as pumped about it as you are,” she says. The payoff, she says, is finding camaraderie with other musicians while making music together. “You can be very different from the players you're in a room with, but when everyone is in the groove, it's unlike anything else I've ever experienced.”

“YOU CAN BE VERY DIFFERENT FROM THE PLAYERS YOU’RE IN A ROOM WITH, BUT WHEN EVERYONE IS IN THE GROOVE, IT’S UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE I’VE EVER EXPERIENCED.”
Ben has toured, played on other indie records and just genuinely enjoyed being around creative people writing, recording and playing songs, so joining The New Chums was a logical next step. He loves to perform live and truly adores his bandmates. “I’m less concerned with being a rock star and more focused on performing, recording and being with people who I love.” Boyack says that regardless of backgrounds, they are each seasoned musicians who (he jokes) also look cool in band photos. The success The New Chums have had is no joking matter, though. Their 2017 EP, See It for Myself, is an integral part of their focus. “One of the songs we play called 'Bad Part of Town' has a significant meaning for me," Seth says. "The song basically goes into a couple of dark times throughout the verses, but the chorus is a simple line of ‘It’s OK.’ I’ve always liked the idea behind that. No matter how challenging the situation is or can be, it’s all OK; it has to be." So, what's in store for The New Chums in 2020? "We will be releasing new music this coming summer! Tour dates and music video to follow," teased Lloyd.

A BACK STAGE PASS TO STUDIO 3, PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY: THE PERFECT PLACE FOR YOUNG PERFORMERS ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY BORG
STUDIO 3 PERFORMING ARTS AND THEIR SISTER ORGANIZATION LIMELIGHT PROVIDE UNPARALLELED TRIPLE THREAT TRAINING FOR CHILDREN INTERESTED IN SINGING, DANCING AND ACTING. Coupled with the purpose of providing a supportive environment for those new to performing, it is at the helm of the arts scene in Gilbert. Artistic Director Emma England is a seasoned pianist and dabbled in musical theater early on. She has parlayed her artistic background into a career and a true life passion. "I was a professional pianist and composer growing up, and found musical theater to be my "escape" from the discipline of my piano studies. I found myself studying dance education at ASU and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Dance Education, a minor in Spanish/K-12 Education. I went on to teach high school for 5 years, while working at a local dance studio. When the owner of the studio had to close, I knew I had to step up and create a home for my performing arts kids." Studio 3 was born and England was welcomed with rave reviews of her shows. She was elated, however still struggling to include those who could not afford to participate. "We had many students who couldn't commit due to financial hardship. In 2016, Limelight was born, and we are a 501(c)3. This means we are able to raise scholarship money for kids and are hoping to one day make theater free for everyone!" Limelight presents professional quality theater and offers educational experiences that are largely made possible because of its nonprofit status. Through sponsors and donors each year, the bar remains high for the quality of programs the theater is able to create. Studio 3 and Limelight are well received at prestigious award ceremonies in the Valley, winning countless National Youth Arts and AriZoni Awards. Each award is special because it recognizes the hard work and dedication that goes into the shows not only for the award recipient, but for the kids and parents who helped bring the vision to life. While the growing list of youth theaters in the East Valley means a variety of options for parents and children, there are key differences that set Studio 3 and Limelight apart. CONTINUED >

"I think Studio 3 is special because our students are learning more than the performing arts. They are building life skills and becoming leaders in the community. We have a very special "everyone is welcome" mentality that is seen through our staff and our students." England also notes that offering quality triple threat training experience is a must for those students serious about a future in the performing arts, and Studio 3 offers an eclectic array of class options in all disciplines, taught by instructors who are at the professional level; most holding a bachelors degree or higher in arts education. "We recognize that choosing the right instructors is more than which candidates can dance or sing well. These professionals must connect with our students and become mentors and role models."

Gilbert Lifestyle | February 2020
Even if a child is not looking ahead to a future in the Rehearsal for Limelight’s production of ‘Legally Blonde’ at Mesa Arts Center
industry, England is confident that each child will take away valuable life skills and lessons from Studio 3. "Through the arts, kids learn discipline, teamwork, collaboration, communication skills, and time management. Performers are also usually the type to go above and beyond in their future jobs because they are used to putting their best foot forward. I think that's why it is so important to recognize that all students are important and special, so we don't just focus on the ones looking toward the arts as a career."
BENEFITS Benefits of participating in a youth theatre program
SELF-CONFIDENCE: Taking risks in class and performing in front of an audience teaches students to trust their ideas and abilities. This confidence will apply in nearly every aspect of their future. IMAGINATION: In a world addicted to technology, theatre provides an outlet for making creative choices, think new ideas, and interpreting the material in expressive ways. EMPATHY & TOLERANCE: Acting roles from different situations, time periods, and cultures promotes compassion and tolerance for others. COMMUNICATION
SKILLS:
Drama
enhances verbal and nonverbal expression of ideas. It improves voice projection, articulation, fluency of language, and persuasive speech. PROBLEM SOLVING: Students learn to communicate the who, what, where, when, and why to the audience. Improvisation fosters quick-thinking solutions, which leads to greater adaptability in life.
