of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of life putting together a monthly magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from all of you that have made what we do possible. We also take this chance to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations giving back to the community. We hope that as you read this issue, you—like us—find inspiration in the lives and experiences of your neighbors and the connections that have been made.

St. Basil's Cathedral
The city of Moscow, Russia, is known for its beautiful architecture and memorable sights. You can marvel at the peaks and eves of The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, more commonly known as St. Basil’s Cathedral on the Red Square. Today, the cathedral, now a museum, is officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat. It was built from 1555 to 1561. After you tour the cathedral, you can take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking sight of the Kremlin over the Moskva River. The Kremlin, also known as the Moscow Kremlin, is the most well-known of the Russian Citadels. Within the Moscow Kremlin are five palaces, four cathedrals and an enclosing wall. The Grand Kremlin Palace is also located within these boundaries, formerly serving as a Moscow residence for tsars. Today, the palace is the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation. Wait until sunset and visit the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the second tallest Orthodox Christian church, with its captivating golden domes. You may observe a bit of history at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin Wall in the Alexander Garden, where the guards continuously keep watch over the unknown soldier. When you visit Moscow, the beauty and wonder are unforgettable.

Winter Bodies Are Made in Fall TEN TIPS TO REJUVENATE YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE BY ADDING A WORKOUT PARTNER
ARTICLE CHRISTI DORSEY AND NICOLE EDMONDS
16
Bowie Lifestyle | November 2019
FEEL AS IF YOU GET IN YOUR OWN WAY WHEN IT COMES TO BEING INVENTIVE? Winter is upon us, and hibernation starts to set in, along with unexpected weight gain. Fall is a great time for a refresh to your workout routine by sparking creativity in a workout buddy. We are two busy Bowie full-time moms (a lawyer and a nutrition program director) offering 10 things to do for cultivating an extraordinary partnership in making their workouts count for the past twoplus years and counting. Forging deep bonds over shared interests has brought more joy and support into our lives than ever expected. 1. COMMIT. THEN, FIGURE IT OUT. If you have any doubt in committing to a solo workout regimen, then commit to creating a powerful connection with someone who can enrich your life holistically. 2. FIND A WORKOUT SOULMATE. OK, maybe not your soulmate, but a workout partner/buddy who can be the boss of you and shake the foundation of your psychological house for those last round of push-ups. 3. MIX IT UP! Having a partner makes trying out new foods and workouts less intimidating. 4. WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH ... At least one of you has to get going. You have to motivate each other with compassion. 5. CREATE FUN WORKOUT RITUALS. Text messages at 5 a.m. must be funny (with emoji) and a necessity for getting out of bed. 6. KEEP IT REAL. Be vulnerable and open with your partner about your dreams and workout struggles. 7. INVITE RANDOMNESS. When the going gets tough as a duo, hire a personal trainer. The amazing thing about this type of randomness is that it forced us to do things that made us uncomfortable. 8. MAKE TIME FOR COFFEE. Enjoy each other’s company outside of the regular exercise routine. 9. CELEBRATE. Recognize and celebrate each other’s successes and encourage each other to achieve more. 10. BE PATIENT. Recognize that exercise is not a speedy process for rapid weight loss. As you get older, it takes time to unlearn what’s been ingrained in your mind when you were young and fighting with forces of gravity. November 2019 | Bowie Lifestyle

Tim Adams: Giving Back to Our Community KEEPING BOWIE BEAUTIFUL, SAFE AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY
ARTICLE ALYSON TURNER | PHOTOGRAPHY RO MORENO NAME: Tim Adams ORGANIZATION: Systems Applications & Technology, Inc. (SA-Tech) WHO ARE YOU? Tim Adams is not only the president and CEO of SA-Tech, but he is also an active member of the community, a member of several community organizations as well as former chairman of the Bowie State Foundation and an advocate for those with disabilities. Tim Adams is a businessman, a family man, a neighbor and a well-known advocate for the community. He resides in Bowie and has lived here for more than 25 years, with his wife, the Honorable Sheila R. Tillerson Adams, daughter Tiara and twins Timothy Jr. and Kayla. Tim and Sheila recently welcomed a new addition to their family, grandson Nehemiyah. Tim is also running for mayor of Bowie. “My wife was the first African American to be appointed to the bench in Prince George’s County 25 years ago. We decided to settle here in Bowie and move the headquarters of my business here as well,” Tim says. Born and raised in New Orleans, Tim went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Xavier University. He attended the Minority Business Executive Program at Tuck College of Business at Dartmouth College and the Business Innovation Management Program at the A. James Clark School of Engineering and the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park. Tim has always deeply cared about his community, and that can be seen in his contributions to the students at Bowie State University as chairman and member of Bowie State University Foundation (BSUF). The Foundation provides scholarships to students, and under Tim’s leadership, there was an increase in funds to more than $5 million. These scholarships have helped 18

Bowie State University maintain the highest retention rate among Maryland’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Tim received an Honorary Doctorate from Bowie State University in May 2017. He hopes to encourage students and young people with disabilities to accomplish all of their goals. “I want those around me to see that whatever challenges we may face can be overcome,” he says. “I would hope to be an inspiration to those with disabilities and other challenges.” In 2005, Tim was severely injured and now uses a wheelchair. In spite of the challenges that have come along with such a severe injury, he has made a positive effort to turn his story into a victorious one. He hopes that young people especially will be encouraged by learning about his accomplishments even after his injury. “I want our young people with disabilities and entrepreneurial spirit to know that there is support to reach your goals and that anything is possible,” he says.

TIM ADAMS: GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY
(CON TI N UED)
Tim also has a deep commitment to meeting the needs of seniors and differently abled people in the community to ensure that accessibility and other issues are addressed. “Right here in Bowie, we have an aging population and many others that have the right to accessibility,” he says. Another community outreach program that is dear to Tim is The Maryland Room, which assists military families at Joint Base Andrews, Malcolm Grow Medical Center for wounded servicemen and women returning from deployment. He also supported the addition of the Family Room at Joint Base Andrews’ passenger terminal and provides scholarships to the top graduates of the Airmen Leadership School. He believes that citizens need to show special care to our veterans. “If we really want to support our military, we have to support them when they take off the uniform as well. We have to support our veterans. That is the true symbol and indication of how we love, care and respect those that serve,” Tim says. It is a passion of his to always give back to the community, a lesson he learned when he was a young child. “A significant commitment to me is to give back. My parents were two people who taught me how important it is to give back and support the community, and sometimes it can be thankless in a way,” Tim says. “I often quote my mom, who said, ‘If you did something for somebody expecting a thank you, you have done it for the wrong reason.’ I do these things for my community, my city and my family. I am someone who has been truly blessed in my career. I am not a stranger to this community. I am so very proud of the integrity of myself, my wife, my family and my organization.” Above all, Tim wants to continue to give back to the community he loves. TimAdams.org

CONFIDENCE COMES FROM WITHIN, BUT WHEN WE LOOK GOOD, WE FEEL GOOD. Taking care of our appearance makes you stand up a little taller and take on life with vigor. For so many, the perfect hairstyle can boost our self-esteem and lift our spirits. To get that perfect hairstyle, you need the perfect hairstylist. Chi Bella, Inc. is a high-end natural hair boutique with expert hairstylists that focus on hair care, natural hair growth and hair restoration. They are not just a salon; they are a hair reconstruction salon. They work to heal their clients’ hair with the best products and services available and promote new hair growth. Chi Bella’s expert stylists specialize in texture and work with all ethnicities to restore and grow natural hair. Milan Junchalearn started doing hair when she was 14 years old and attended a fashion high school in New York. She then began her own side business braiding hair in her neighborhood. After several years of challenges including owning three salons, Milan and her four children moved to Maryland for a fresh start. After trying her hand at several different careers including real estate and interior design, Milan knew she had to return to her foundation. “My talent is in hair. I started a women’s support group and wrote a book, but I finally realized after much hardship that I needed to open a salon. I spoke to a friend about starting a partnership. I had to move apartments at that time. I called all of my clients and set up package deals for hair services once I opened the salon and used those funds to put down a deposit,” Milan says. “From March 2018 to May 2018, we doubled our clients. By September 2018, we had more than 100 clients coming in. I realized that this is a needed place. It helped rejuvenate my passion for hair while helping women who had lost their confidence.” One of the most alluring and special features of the salon is that Chi Bella caters to a professional crowd. When you come in for your appointment, you do not have to wait. You are not left to sit around for hours until it is your time. They understand your time is valuable. “We play jazz. We have wine and snacks. We do not want people waiting and sitting around,” Milan says. “This is a specialty of ours: making sure you are in the chair at your appointment time.” CONTINUED >

“THE CORE OF CHI BELLA IS WORKING WITH THE HEALTHIEST PRODUCTS, CONDITIONING AND HYDRATING THE HAIR AS WELL AS PROVIDING ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS.”
Chi Bella is expanding its brand. In less than a year, Milan went from being the only stylist with one shampoo assistant to having six stylists who were trained in the Chi Bella concept: how to restore hair textures and how to target the interior of the hair. Each stylist will use their own talents to treat clients. Milan is an educator. She trains all of her staff as well as hires experts to teach advanced classes to keep stylists current and innovative while keeping up to date with education. “We are working on a custom hair product line. ... We have custom oil blends that enhance the growth of the hair, and we are starting a Chi Bella Inc. Braiding Spa focused on herbs, roots, plant-based products. It is our own concoction that we provide strictly for hair textures that are in need of treatments before braiding. We treat the hair in all-natural-based products before braiding,” Milan says. “The core of Chi Bella is working with the healthiest products, conditioning and hydrating the hair as well as providing essential nutrients. The braiding spa will be opening up by the end of the year in the Bowie area. In early spring, a second Chi Bella, Inc. natural hair boutique will be opening in Waldorf.” Visit Chi Bella Natural Hair Boutique on Facebook or on Instagram at @ChiBellaInc. 26

RENOVATE & REFINE
COZY up your HOME TAKE A CUE FROM THE SCANDINAVIAN CONCEPT OF HYGGE AND WELCOME THE TRANSITION OF SUMMER TO AUTUMN WITH A RELAXING REFRESH
28
Bowie Lifestyle | November 2019
PUMPKIN SPICE, APPLE CINNAMON AND A HOT CUP OF COCOA. Fall is all about getting warm and comfy as a chill hits the air—preparing yourself for winter, and cherishing those final moments of summer. As the nights grow longer, we’re embracing the Scandinavian secret of hygge by creating a space that emphasizes simple pleasures and finding joy in everyday moments—even when the weather is dreary. A burnt orange adirondack rug and woodland pillow set a ‘cozy cabin’ mood. Wicker baskets filled with apples and gourds are a reminder of the importance of the harvest, and a fun way to help teach young kids about the changing of the seasons. During this transitional time, light wood, fluffy blankets and scented candles beckon crisp autumn evenings, while a vase of fresh flowers—particularly mums—are an ode to the bright, sunny days we’re not quite ready to give up yet.

warm cinnamon are scents that bring the autumn air indoors. Adding these scents to your home will create a comforting and inviting atmosphere for your family and fall guests.
MAD FOR PLAID Plaid patterns are a staple for fall. Find unique ways to pull the pattern into your decor in the form of blankets, pillows and even rugs if you’re feeling adventurous!
MUM’S THE WORD Mums’

long-lasting blooms are almost as much a marker of autumn as football, shorter days and cooler weather. Incorporate some warmer-color blooms into your decor for a fresh addition that’s reminiscent of changing leaves.
AU NATURALE Wicker and natural materials like wood and jute are great ways to bring the outdoors in. Create a woodsy feel with dried flowers, natural wood accents and lots of baskets—great for storing your knit blankets! 30

confessions
COMMUNITY MEMBERS SHARE THEIR BEST HOLIDAY STORIES FROM FUNNY TO SWEET NAME: Alyson Turner, editorial coordinator BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION: Bowie Lifestyle magazine CONFESSION:
"For our first Thanksgiving as a married couple, my husband and I were away from family, so we hosted dinner at our apartment. We squeezed into our tiny apartment, and when we went to open a bottle of wine, the pretty bottle we had purchased was cooking wine. Needless to say, we did not impress the crowd."
NAME: Dr. Delores Pittman BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION: Pride Dental CONFESSION:
"Thanksgiving around the dinner table is a much-anticipated holiday of mine. Careful menu planning is critical: For Mom, lemon-raspberry cake with cream cheese frosting; the children, macaroni and cheese; my neighbor and brother, pork-impaired, alternative options required; sister-in-law will want to bring the collard greens; my cousin, allergic to shellfish; If-It-Ain’t-Broke-Don’t-Fix-It Stuffing, a crowd favorite. When I finally set the table with the good china and collapse on the couch, I’m exhausted. Why slave away well into the night in preparation for this occasion? There’s only one reason: love." NAME: Ro Moreno BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION: Capture the Moment Photography CONFESSION:
"I photograph people visiting Santa Claus at the mall, and sometimes they have a 'bring your pets.' The funniest was a little pig. He was dressed as Frosty the Snowman with a little hat. He was also very reluctant. Finally, after all of us coaxing the little pig, we got the photo. It was an interesting day to say the least."
