NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR, MARY KAY ANDREWS, IS WELL ACQUAINTED WITH PAGE TURNING BOOKS. She is known as the queen of beach reads and has penned 29 books, including her newly released, “Hello Summer.” I had the chance to interview the prolific, personable author for her St. Louis County Library book signing of 2019’s “Sunset Beach.” Andrews tells me, “There’s a tiny bit of my DNA in each of my protagonists.” Indeed, readers will find a bit of the former newspaper reporter in Conley Hawkins, the main character in “Hello Summer,” as well as her leading lady, Drue Campbell, in “Sunset Beach.” Romance, scandal and mystery unfold in each storyline. Both are tough to put down, quick reads and perfect for those lazy summer days. “The ultimate for me is to have a reader say, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got a book hangover!!’ “ laughs Andrews. What I enjoy about interviewing authors is learning how they write. For “Sunset Beach”, Andrews, who lives in Georgia, rented a cottage in Sunset Beach, Florida to get her inspiration. She’s also into home renovating and is quite the chef! Her recipes can be found in her aptly named “Beach House Cookbook.” Watch our conversation at www.hecmedia.org. Andrews’ books are available on Amazon, the St. Louis County library and most book stores. Check out Mary Kay Andrew’s library of books at www.marykayandrews.com.

RIVER OF LIFE FARMS Take a vacation at the Rivers of Life Farm in Dora, Missouri, to escape the stresses bombarding our lives now. Located on the north fork of the White River, the farm features luxury cabins tucked away in lush treetops where guests can relax in whirlpool tubs, and sleep on king-size beds with Egyptian cotton sheets. For a river experience, owners Myron and Ann McKee will shuttle guests upriver where they can get a canoe and float back down river to the farm. “People are completely disconnected when they’re out here,” says Rebecca McKee. “This gives them a chance to connect with who they’re with, to get back to nature and to do some healing on whatever level they need at the time. MARK TWAIN RIVERBOAT CRUISE For a step back in history, climb aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat in Hannibal, Missouri, for a daytime or a dinner cruise. The paddleboat evokes memories of a time on the Mississippi River when ladies with parasols and smoothtalking gamblers strolled the decks watching the tree-covered bluffs and sandbars drift by. “We want visitors to experience what called Mark Twain to write his books,” says Captain Steve Terry. “I know that most people are seeing this for the first time, and I like to tell the story of the river. The day cruises include narrations about points of interest along the river. The dinner cruises include entertainment with a bit of history while passengers enjoy a buffet. Call 573-221-3222 or visit marktwainriverboat.com LADY LIBERTY AND GOIN’ JESSI Big Cedar Lodge, Ridgedale, Mo., nestled in the Ozark Mountains on Table Rock Lake features the Lady Liberty, a custom-built 65-foot luxury yacht that captures the beauty of a by-gone era. Experience the lake than on a brunch or dinner cruise, then relax on the spacious, open-air upper deck and let the cares of the day drift away. For a shorter excursion, cruise the lake on the “Goin’ Jessi,” an exact replica of a 1934 Chris Craft named after Waylon Jennings’s wife, Jessi.

Call 800-225-6343 or visit bigcedar.com BIG MUDDY ADVENTURES With the Mississippi, Missouri and Meramec Rivers flowing around St. Louis, the city can be considered an island, and the Big Muddy Adventure Company wants to make sure residents get up close and personal with the rivers. Big Muddy shuttles passengers to the Chain of Rocks Bridge. They row over to Mosenthein Island where lunch is served, then paddle downriver to the Arch. Once a month, the company has a “lunar” night float with a celebrity chef who cooks dinner on the island. “We heard this myth from our grandparents not to go near the river because it’s dangerous,” says Canoe Captain Joe Holstein. “WE have allowed industry to dominate the riverfront making it hard to access.” Big Muddy Adventures wants to show the beauty of the river and allow passengers to relieve their stresses and enjoy nature. The company also has ‘Paddle and Pedal” trips along the Missouri, and float trips with canoes or kayaks on the Meramec. For more information, call 314-896-4BMA or visit 2muddy.com At press time, pandemic rules were still changing, so we suggest that you call each of these companies to see if the dates you want are available. FINANCIAL BUZZ

Marshall Faulk TELL US ABOUT VIRTUITY FINANCIAL PARTNERS: Virtuity helps people know exactly where they are with their finances. Our role is to help with planning: estate, retirement, long term. We want to make sure our clients have everything in place so that they end up where they want to be. In addition we teach financial literacy. Basically how money works. We offer a financial needs analysis free of charge to ensure that both the short and long fall plans make sense. We like to show clients how the business can work for them including creating additional income stream; utilizing resources and contacts to ensure a productive plan makes sense. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN ENCOUNTERING LATELY? Most people don’t know how money works. Or how to leverage money and assets so that finances are diversified. WHAT IS FINANCIAL LITERACY AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Financial literacy is accounting for your money. I want you to know how much you need to put aside for retirement accounting for inflation. Knowing your rate of return can assist you in your plans. Financial literacy is a basic principle of understanding today’s money and how much it’s earning. We want to teach you how to better understand what saving money looks like and what it can do. For the most part, it’s having people feel comfortable saying what they don’t know and that’s where help starts. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING THIS? 4.5 years/active for last two. HOW DO YOU WORK WITH CLIENTS AND WHAT POPULATION DO YOU MOST ENJOY WORKING WITH? I work with a wide range of clients from all socioeconomic backgrounds. I grew up in an underserved community where there was no money. Today I promote growing money so that all of my clients especially middle and low income families understand how important it is to plan for health and life insurance needs. I encourage clients to become financially literate to ensure a better life for themselves and their kids. I hopefully am opening doors that might have previously been closed. Marshall Faulk 24

OVERLOOKING THE CLAYTON SKYLINE IN STYLE

I n C l ay t o n THERE’S A SOPHISTICATION TO THE CITY OF CLAYTON THAT HAS ALWAYS MADE IT A DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE. It’s nestled between glimmering high-rises, unique neighborhood boutiques, art galleries, exclusive restaurants, hotels and historic homes. The expansive Shaw Park sits on the west side of the city. At any time during the day you’ll find block after block of quaint places to eat, sip coffee, shop, exercise or stay. You can spend an entire day of exploring without leaving the area. And when you’re done with your daytime exploring there’s plenty of exciting nightlife. It’s the perfect place to make your home, and that’s just what the MRM Manlin Development Group is counting on. The custom home builder plans to build ten exquisite three-story luxury new Townhomes at Gay and Maryland.
