EVERY HOUSE BEGINS AS A BLANK CANVAS, A SERIES OF WALLS AND AN ACCRUAL OF SQUARE FOOTAGE READY TO BE FILLED. Our personal belongings breathe life into empty rooms, and interior design transforms a house into a home. Carolee McCall Smith, co-owner of McCall Homes, knows the importance of a visually appealing living space. Here, she offers interior design tips and advice on how to create a cohesive look within a room.
1
FUNCTION “What is the primary function of this room? If it’s an entertaining space, set up the furniture in a way that nurtures conversation by opposing furniture. If it’s a cozy space for your family to be together, maybe use a sectional that fits the whole family comfortably for movie night.”
2
ACCENT “Accent with color and pattern. Small pops of color and pattern are a great way to add some personality to your space. Also, by keeping your major pieces neutral and adding color with smaller pieces and accessories, periodically changing the feeling of your space by swapping out those accents becomes quicker and more affordable.”
3
TE X TURE “Often overlooked, a mixture of textures in a space is key to making a room feel dynamic. Balance is important here, as too much of a good thing can ruin the feel of a room.”
4
AVOID OVERCROWDING “Negative space (white space) can be as important as the design itself. Filling every bit of wall space with something can make it appear cluttered, so pick your favorites and keep it from being overwhelming. Large-scale art is trending this year, so you can really have fun with big pieces.”
5
M I X M E TA L S A N D ADD GREENER Y “Embrace a more fun, bohemian feel by mixing two to three different metal finishes into the design. Greenery brings a bit of life to a room and adds another type of texture to the palette.” September 2019 | Billings Lifestyle

specialties. An opportunity arose in Jackson, Mississippi which would alter the course of his already distinguished career.
“He had a music box inside his chest which played Brahm’s Lullaby when the stuffed animal was moved,” Dr. Muskett recalls. “When the music stopped, I opened his chest and removed the box, had it repaired, and then replanted it…My mother, Montana’s first female pharmacist, and my father, an educator, were wonderfully nurturing people, but I think cutting up my Teddy bear mildly alarmed them.”
“A friend of mine, Dr. Walt Peet, a revered plastic surgeon, suggested I replace him on his retirement,” says Dr. Muskett. “I moved our family to Jackson, Mississippi in 2003, where I did another residency in plastic surgery. We returned to Billings in 2005, where I joined Dr. Steve Grosso at Billings Plastic Surgery. For the second time in my life, I joined a practice with spectacular surgeons and even better people.”
This inherent interest in healing would be only one facet of his childhood and young adulthood. Growing up in Missoula, Dr. Muskett participated in speech team, cross country running, and track during the school year. His summers were spent building log homes in the Swan Valley. He majored in English Literature at Montana State University while working as an orderly at the Bozeman hospital. “My respect for the nursing profession deepened there,” he affirms, “along with my desire to become a cardiac surgeon. I was fortunate to be selected to the University of Washington Medical School. In Seattle I participated in cardiac surgical research, and met my wife Pam at one of our epic Friday-after-finals parties. She thought I was a good listener. Actually, I was having a hard time talking.” They moved to Salt Lake City and Dr. Muskett trained in general surgery. His interest in the cardiac specialty deepened, culminating in a fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. “We did everything from heart and lung transplants to tiny babies,” reflects Dr. Muskett. “I was lucky enough to land a job at the end of my training with two great surgeons in Billings, Montana--Dr. Steve Hubbard and Dr. Tim Dernbach.” In 1991, the Muskett family moved to Billings. Alan, his wife Pam, and their two young daughters, Sally and Cathy, would be joined by a son, Luke, in 1994. “For twelve years our surgical group had a great run of success. Things changed, however, when non-surgical methods of treating heart disease came in the form of balloons and stents. Our volumes dropped and reimbursement plummeted.”
Plastic surgery became the ideal outlet for Dr. Muskett’s innate desire to heal. He treats patients of every age, his knowledge encompasses every part of the body, and he is utilizing a tool box that can fix almost anything. And fixing is his passion. “I like fixing things. I have a wood shop, forty acres of forest I am rehabbing, and I like to think, with my newspaper column and books, that I am fixing a few souls along the way.” In finding a home at Billings Plastic Surgery, Dr. Muskett is able to serve the community in ways that are meaningful and fulfilling. Alongside Dr. Grosso, he works with all medical and surgical disciplines to heal and treat, not only within Billings, but around the globe. “We serve the community with tertiary level reconstructive capability,” he says of Billings Plastic Surgery. “And with all that experience and training and expertise… we do some pretty nice cosmetic surgery. We thank you, our cosmetic surgery patients, because you are the ones that allow us to travel to Central America and India to do cleft lips and palates on the underprivileged kids there.” While some may wonder about the meaning of their lives, Dr. Muskett needs no such assurance. He believes that the most meaningful life is one of service. An act he and his team perform each day. “The most meaningful thing any of us will ever do is relieve the suffering of another person. I get to do that, in a spectacular fashion sometimes, but we all can. Just listening to a person in pain is a critical service.”
This divergence in medical climate caused Dr. Muskett to consider other

FASHION IS NOT STATIONARY. It moves with fluidity, able to pair the proper attire with different environments and settings. Clothing is a reflection of one’s mood, personality, social status and ideals. Linda Brooks, owner and founder of SOMETHINGHchic, understands the importance of personal style and tailoring fashion to fit one’s surroundings. “SOMETHINGchic represents the fashion-savvy woman who wants to look stunning and stylish throughout her day, no matter what she is doing,” Linda says. “She wants to look her best, exude confidence and feel empowered. She values uniqueness, quality, service and frugality.” Linda has harbored an affinity for clothing for as long as she can remember. In fourth grade, she recalls folding and cuffing the bottom of her jeans, always striving to keep up with the latest fashions and trends. In 2016, she entered the Battle of the Plans contest, with the intention of pursuing her dream: to own and operate her own clothing store. “I wanted to create a beautiful-looking store and offer fashion that would never give you the feeling of regret of overspending. … Having never taken a business class, the competition introduced me to resources and information I never knew existed. It was then that I learned how to write a business plan and SOMETHINGchic started taking shape. It took three years, lots of ups and downs, sacrifices and hard work, but it paid off, and I am now living my dream.” Whether shopping for work, weekend or a special event, Linda offers “something” for everyone. “The name SOMETHINGchic simply came from my love of shopping,” Linda explains. “When I’d go shopping, I was always looking for ‘something.’ Something to wear to a wedding, something for a gift—but mostly I just wanted something new. And the definition of ‘chic’ is elegantly and stylishly fashionable. Basically, I was always shopping for SOMETHINGchic.” Linda styled four distinct looks for four different social settings. Explore her inspirations and ideas behind the selections. URBAN Linda: Urban style is simply the combination of different cultures and lifestyles; it’s most often called "street style." This look combines the Montana Western culture with sophisticated city style, along with elevated basics. The oversized trench coat, more often seen over a business-style outfit, paired with a basic tee and Levi’s denim shorts, creates a look with varying lengths. The pocket tee was Frenchtucked to give it a more stylish look and also allows for showing off the belt. The belt has a Western-style buckle and pairs nicely with the

BUILDING HOME POSSIBILITIES
Before our remodel I was embarrassed to host parties or have company in our kitchen. It was crowded, dark, outdated, and not vey functional. After Ty Nelson's amazing renovation, I now love hosting people and we are so proud of our kitchen. To say we highly recommend Ty Nelson Design & Remodel would be an understatement!” ~ Pat and Jamie Carahasen
