SINCE 1979, THE CHARITY HAS SERVED MORE THAN 50,000 FAMILIES SEEKING MEDICAL CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN IN ATLANTA. In celebration, Gov. Brian Kemp proclaimed March 11, 2019, as Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities Day in Georgia. Atlanta’s first Ronald McDonald House on Houston Mill Road, the fourth Ronald McDonald House in the world, opened on March 11, 1979. It was built to provide a haven for families who must travel far from home for their child’s specialized medical care. In 2008, it was replaced with a $15.7 million LEEDcertified 50-bedroom facility on Gatewood Road, featuring a transplant wing to serve children who have received heart, liver, kidney and bone marrow transplants.

Wellness is a Way o f L i f e SUE G. COLLINS: YOU STUDIED MEDICINE IN HOUSTON, HERE IN ATLANTA AND LA. ARE THERE ANY FITNESS OR WELLNESS HABITS YOU HAVE CARRIED WITH YOU THROUGH THE YEARS? DR. MILES GRAIVIER: I have been active my entire life and continue to use regular exercise to maintain my health and fitness. I set aside time to work out at least once and usually twice a week with a combination of weight training and aerobic conditioning. I have shifted my focus to do more core strengthening and enjoy mountain biking with my son and even stationary Peloton conditioning. This has allowed me to continue to snow ski, wakesurf, wakeboard and allowed me to continue to play open division flag football into my early 50s as well as open division competitive softball. It also allowed me to do five days of Heli-Skiing which was a big challenge for conditioning. SGC: YOU HAVE A SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE IN THE ALPHARETTA AREA FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO ENJOY NATURE NEARBY? MG: The Greenway, Big Trees Forest Preserve in Sandy Springs and Sope Creek. We additionally love to hike in the North Georgia Mountains, especially some of the waterfalls surrounding Lake Burton. SGC: YOUR PRACTICE OFFERS SURGICAL, NON-SURGICAL AND MED SPA SERVICES AND TREATMENTS THAT MAKE CLIENTS FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES. WHAT ARE A FEW TREATMENTS OUR READERS SHOULD CONSIDER FOR THEIR NEW YEAR? It hydrates the skin and leaves your skin looking brighter and even plumper. We additionally really like the Vivace Bipolar Radiofrequency

THE ROLLING STONES — THAT WAS A NAME I WASN’T EXPECTING TO HEAR DURING MY WALKING TOUR OF PRAGUE. We were wandering through Lesser Town when my walking tour guide, Hana, mentioned the Stones were friends with the first president of the Czech Republic (post communism). Apparently, in 1995, the band wanted to help Prague get back on its feet and paid for a new lighting system for Prague Castle. I’d come to the city with a long-standing musical history for a long weekend, armed with an itinerary that celebrated all things melodic, including the walking tour. Read on to find out what noteworthy experiences you might want to include on a visit to Prague. THURSDAY Peace. That’s the feeling that swept over me as I opened the windows of my room at the Aria Hotel Prague and took in the sun setting over the UNESCO-listed Vrtba Garden. The Baroque gardens were closed during my March visit (they’re open April-October). But, I was lucky enough to be staying in a spot that had a private view. My room with a view was one of several perks that the musically themed Aria offers. For example, the hotel boasts a library of music to enjoy. There’s also a rooftop terrace, a complimentary afternoon tea and breakfast (which includes hot egg options and bubbly), and a personal mobile phone for your use. Then, there’s the Aria’s fine dining option, CODA. My first evening, I was craving comfort food. As a pianist played everything from Abba to Frank Sinatra, I enjoyed bites like oxtail soup and duck with sauerkraut. It was just what I needed before drifting into a deep, jet lag-induced sleep. FRIDAY I woke to a sunny and mild morning, and headed across the Charles Bridge to the spa at the Four Seasons Hotel Prague for a 50-minute La Boheme massage, which incorporated linden blossom oils (inspired by the Czech national tree). According to the spa, the oil can help decrease cold symptoms and encourage healthy sleep. Talk about music to my muscles!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

WO R KO U T S F O R YO U R MOODS NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health? It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts. But, whatever

FEELING ANXIOUS

A regular yoga practice can help to ease anxiety by increasing body awareness, reducing muscle tension, relieving stress and sharpening attention + concentration.

01 R AG D O L L Ragdoll pose is great for relaxation and to release tension. Stand tall + reach your arms up, then allow them to fall gently toward the floor. as you bend over

02 C H I L D ’ S P O S E This calming and restorative pose is a common beginner’s position. Starting from your knees, sit back on your heels then walk your arms forward, bringing your torso down until you can rest your forehead on the floor.

RUNNING There’s a reason people who are active runners describe something called a “runner’s high.” Studies show that aerobic exercises release

mood-boosting endorphins.

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.

C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.

ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10Ks or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time. When your head is full of thoughts, it can get overwhelming. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) provides a break from that with short bursts of 100% focus followed by rest. Here’s a quick circuit.

01 K E T T L E B E L L SW I N G S Do as many reps as possible in 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.

02 H I G H K N E E S Climb it out for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.

03 P L A N K Hold your plank for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest. Repeat the circuit three times for a quick workout that touches on strength, cardio + core.
