JANUARY IS CERVICAL AWARENESS MONTH According

to

Healthfinder.gov,

"about 79 million Americans currently have HPV. Many people with HPV don’t know they are infected. And each year, more than 11,000 women in the United States get cervical cancer." Cervical Health Awareness Month is meant to raise awareness about how women can protect themselves from both HPV (human papillomavirus) and cervical cancer. HPV is actually a common infection, spread by sexual activity, and is the cause of almost all cases of cervical cancer. Women should be screened regularly for cervical cancer so that, if it is developing, it can be caught early. The screening is usually part of a well-woman exam, and typically covered by insurance. As well, pre-teens—both boys and girls— can receive the HPV vaccine.

CAROL NALEVANKO TALKS ABOUT HER JOURNEY WITH THE VILLAGE HEALTH CLUBS & SPAS

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | January 2020

IT WAS 1980 AND CAROL NALEVANKO HAD MOVED TO ARIZONA AFTER GRADUATING FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA. Looking for a job, answered an ad in the paper for an activities director. “The ad that I answered asked if the candidate liked people, liked sports, and liked organizing events,” she remembers. She thought that described her pretty well, so she applied. She was given an interview that same day and landed the job—and the rest, as they say, is history. Fast-forward 40 years, and Carol is now the president of Village Health Clubs & Spas. Her first job—the activities director one—was with Metro Sports & Health Club, which was owned by Bennett Dorrance. After some time as the activities direc-

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)

“We are much more than a place people come to work out,” Carol explains. “Our success is based on the fact that we’re more than a fitness center. We have a strong social element and we’re all about people meeting people and connecting. We have multiple generations of members here and it’s an excellent place to spend time together to build lifelong friendships.

“I’ve been with the company for 40 years and every time I walk in I get a feeling of satisfaction and pride.” — Carol Nalevanko “It still amazes me that we’ve taken our first club and grown it into this really dynamic company of 900 employees and about 30,000 members,” she continues. “Every January, we have our annual employee party. We rent out the Hyatt Gainey ballroom and every time I walk into that ballroom I’m amazed at what the company has become.” Carol credits the success of the company to both the people—the employees and members—as well as the product itself. It’s a model that lets people disconnect from social media and have human connections. “We created an environment where both fitness and social interactions are valued and encouraged. The Village is a second home for our members and that can change people’s lives. “I’ve been with the company for 40 years and every time I walk in I get a feeling of satisfaction and pride,” she says. 20

SUPERMODEL CAMERONE PARKER MCCULLOCH ON HAVING A ‘WIDOW MAKER’ HEART ATTACK, MS, AND LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST

best face f o r w a rd ARTICLE MICHELLE GLICKSMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY WHITNEY DINOTA

26

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | January 2020

IT WAS OCT. 2, 2019, AND CAMERONE PARKER MCCULLOCH—INTERNATIONAL

SUPERMODEL,

PHILANTHROPIST, AND A WOMAN CHANGING THE FACE OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)—WAS GETTING A HAIRCUT. “I wasn’t doing anything strenuous. I wasn’t running a marathon. The only running I’ll do is for a sale at Bergdorf Goodman!” she says, laughing, her warm personality shining through and her infectious laugh drawing you in. “I sat down in the chair, I looked up at my hairdresser, and I said, ‘I don’t feel very well.’ I had a cold sweat and was drenched from head-to-toe,” she remembers. Her hairdresser got her home, and while walking into her house, she collapsed. Camerone was rushed to Banner-University Medical Center, where the emergency room team determined that she’d had a “Widow Maker” heart attack—a term coined when the main artery down the front of the heart (LAD) is totally blocked or has a critical blockage at the beginning of the vessel. As the term suggests, most people don’t survive this type of heart attack. Camerone’s close friends and family dropped everything to be at her side. Thankfully, she pulled through. “I firmly believe that God has a purpose for me,” says the just-turned 54-year-old. “Obviously my work here wasn’t done. [I’m] trying to make every hour count and do good.” A FAMOUS FACE If Camerone looks familiar, that’s probably because you’ve seen her face gracing the pages of magazines, advertisements, billboards, on television and more. She was discovered at age 23 by John Casablancas, the founder of Elite Model Management, while she was shopping with her mother in Los Angeles. She had been planning to be a translator—and had studied several languages—until this opportunity presented itself. Instead, she used her knowledge of languages to negotiate contracts around the world as she traveled and worked in other countries. Over the years, she’s appeared in over 400 magazines and her career has included highlights such as being the face of Oil of Olay, a Ralph Laruen Polo ad billboard in Times Square in New York City, walking in every major Fashion Week around the world, being chosen as a muse for three designers on Project Runway, receiving a call to be on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and so much more. THE HIDDEN SECRET But even as Camerone was putting on a smile for the camera and runway, she was hiding a secret. Twenty years ago, she was diagnosed with MS. In 2009, she went public with her diagnosis, becoming a celebrity voice in patient advocacy for MS and treatment. She travels the country—and this year will head to Canada, as

and would benefit from cardiovascular examinations using more advanced techniques. She will advocate that patients should ask their doctors for a good Echo Cardiogram. home sweet home PARADISE LIVING CENTERS WELCOMES RESIDENTS TO ITS FOURTH LOCATION ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

SITUATED IN THE HEART OF PARADISE VALLEY AT 60TH STREET AND LINCOLN DRIVE, PARADISE LIVING CENTERS RECENTLY OPENED ITS FOURTH LOCATION. The local luxury assisted care home provider owns four luxury assisted living and respite care homes—two of which are in Paradise Valley—and selected the scenic location for its latest 5,500-square-foot home for a variety of reasons that benefit both its future residents and their families. “Location is something we consider very carefully,” says Bob Adamo, owner of Paradise Living Centers. “We build our homes in areas where there is a high demand for luxury care that offers residents and their families easy access to where they live…. We built this home in close proximity to our other Paradise Valley location, which makes it easy for our care managers, activities director and cook to move between locations to take care of the residents at each house and support our caregivers.” The house, which is built against the backdrop of Camelback Mountain, features 10 private bedrooms and bathroom suites with large closet spaces. Future and current residents also can enjoy a variety of spacious common areas for dining and entertainment, as well as a backyard patio, gazebo, bocce ball court, walking paths and an on-site hair salon. 38
