Speaking of fun, let’s talk about what’s in this issue. It’s really about awareness, and how we can be more intentional about affecting our community. We’ve got some judges that you need to be watching, as they find ways to get things right and affect change. I know we talk about “green” and “eco-friendly,” but what does that really mean? We’ve got a few examples of what that looks like, and how you can indeed be green, too! And, of course, we have a few feel goods in there as well! Be sure to follow South Fulton LIfestyle magazine @southfultonlifestyle, and connect with me on socials @michelletaylorwillis. As always, share what you love! Talk soon!

Beginning in March 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau will invite households across the country to participate in the
2020 Census!
The U.S. Constitution mandates that every 10 years we count every person who lives in the United States. This year is the first digital census, which means you can respond online. Drop this link into your browser and watch the video to learn more about the census: www.census.gov
DOES FILLING OUT A CENSUS FORM IMPACT ME? YES IT DOES!
The distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds, grants, and support to states, counties, and communities are based on census data. That money is spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital programs. • • •
3 WAYS TO RESPOND:
Fill out your form online. Request a paper form by calling the U.S. Census Bureau. Work with a certified Census representative to complete your form over-the phone.
IS CENSUS DATA CONFIDENTIAL?
Your answers are protected by law and are strictly confidential. It is illegal for the Census Bureau, or its employees to share your personal information with any other government agency. This includes law enforcement, government agents or immigration.
IT’S ABOUT REDISTRICTING
After each decade’s census, state officials redraw the boundaries of the congressional and state legislative districts in their states to account for population shifts. Taking part is your civic duty and this year 2020 will be easier than ever! In 2020, you will be able to respond to the census online. Completing the census is mandatory: it’s a way to participate in our democracy and say “I COUNT! April 1, 2020 is Census Day – Are You Ready? To learn more visit www.census.gov

dr. kevin james MORRIS BROWN COLLEGE'S RESURGENCE UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE INTERIM PRESIDENT
DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK. It’s more of a rebirth. Morris Brown College, the only college in the state of Georgia created by and for African Americans, opened its doors in 1881 and, contrary to what most believe, the Christian-based institution has never closed them. For almost 20 years, the school has faced numerous financial hardships that resulted in losing its accreditation, making it impossible for students to obtain government funding for their education. This forced potential students to go elsewhere, since the majority of students can’t pay out-of-pocket. To date, the school remains open, with three full-time faculty, more than 20 volunteer faculty, 35 students, and three degree offerings. Dr. Kevin James, the interim president, has big plans for the HBCU and is requesting all hands on deck to achieve his vision. His goal to raise $10 million is no easy feat, but the former college dean feels that it’s not too much to ask from an educational system that needs the presence of historically black colleges and universities now more than ever. “During my interview, I had a presentation and said, ‘If you hire me, this is what I’ll do,’” shares Dr. James.

He already had a plan, and when he landed the job, he hit the ground running. On the job since March 1, 2019, the South Carolina State University alum narrowly escaped the words of naysayers and non-believers early on. The stamp of approval he received from just one mentor catapulted his confidence and encouraged him to forge on. “She told me that what I was attempting has never been done before, but if anyone could do it, I could,” he explains. “My idea is to build people’s trust, then get out in the community and be visible, so they can see the administration is moving in the right direction,” says Dr. James. He wants major corporations and independent donors to understand that Morris Brown College is a quality institution that deserves another chance to reestablish itself as the distinguished school it once was. The likes of civil rights icon Rev. Hosea Williams and DeKalb County’s first woman sheriff, Melody Maddox, have walked the historic halls and hiked across the now bare campus. There are certainly more high achievers that deserve to be a part of the wolverine family and create their own legacies there. Dr. James continues to call on all alumni, famous or not, to help in the mission. Since Morris Brown College is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, it qualifies for matching gifts from donors’ employers. No amount is too small. Fundraisers and outside facility rentals also add up. In addition to local donations, Dr. James is praying for larger gifts in the millions. He hopes to attract the attention of Fortune 500 companies like The Home Depot Corporation, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and Delta Airlines, as well as celebrities like Bill Gates, Tom Joyner, Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, and billionaire philanthropist Robert F. Smith, who recently gifted Morehouse College grads over $34 million. Located in the heart of Atlanta, the new mecca of the film and television industry, Morris Brown College welcomes movie studios to rent the campus for film productions as well. Anyone willing to help this institution be restored to its greatness is a valuable asset. To aid in this daunting process, Dr. James is looking for volunteer grant writers, a public relations specialist and other pertinent roles that could assist in raising capital to move the school closer to applying for and receiving accreditation from TRACS (Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools) this fall. Even though Dr. James has been a part of the Morris Brown College family for a short time, he’s proven his dedication to keeping it alive. “This has never been done before, but I’m going to get it done,” he declares. Ta m pa w i t h a T w i st ! EXPLOSIVE ENERGY, LIQUID LIBATIONS AND INFECTIOUS PERSONALITIES AWAIT YOU IN TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA. Challenged by my 48-hour assignment to uncover the sparkle of this southern city placed me in a dubious position. Let’s just say I will be returning! Often overshadowed by the mammoth appeal of Miami nightlife and Orlando’s thriving amusement parks, Tampa Bay can be overlooked by travelers. Make no mistake, consider this an affectionate reminder that Tampa holds a unique history and a wealth of welcoming human interaction that will ensure your return. Simply intoxicating, the golden sunshine and whispering breezes will relax you while you cruise in the Pirate water taxi along the Hillsboro River. Literally, you can grab a beer, digest the city history, and inhale the splendid views. Tampa Bay with a twist? Well, the discerning traveler will soon come to understand this Floridian gem has bay-crafted cocktails rooted in a culture of celebration and a dance craze footprint established by “The Twist.” Feeling the excitement of Tampeños teenagers Hank Ballard and The Midnighters who created the chart-topping song to accompany the twisting teen dancers provides a bit of travel trivia and historical nostalgia. There is an undeniable festive spirit here that will spark your fascination to unlock more of Tampa Bay. lysts of change, enhancing the city’s richness in culture, style and food.
A port city and railroad hub in years past made Tampa Bay a hotbed for commerce. The brilliance and intellect of Spanish entrepreneur Vincente Martinez Ybor created explosive growth of this waterfront city. Ybor capitalized, monetized and thrived, ultimately creating opportunities for his employees to live the American Dream. Descendants of Cuban, Spanish, German and Italian immigrants contributed to the former glory of this Cigar Capital, producing over 700 million cigars a year at its height of production. Today, the city is experiencing a lightning fast resurrection due to the forward thinking of new entrepreneurs like Jeffrey N. Vinik, owner of the city’s NHL hockey team, the Tampa Bay Lightning. Conscious growth of the city based on sustaining the heritage and culture is paramount to the locals. Here is a quick guide to EAT, STAY & PLAY while absorbing the zeal that is Tampa.

48 HOURS TO EXPLORE TAMPA BAY ARTICLE PATRICK T. COOPER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
+ EAT There is absolutely no way to eat all of the delicious foods in this melting pot of diversity. However, I did my best to devour as much as I could without causing discomfort. I will admit, at times it was a challenge. I made three memorable stops during this trip. My first stop for bites and conversation landed me at Chef Felicia LaCalle’s Hemingway’s. Felicia pours soulful Cuban influence into every bite. The Hemingway Cuban is the best self-gift treat for lunch. My second stop landed me in front of the ever-evolving menu at Edison Food + Drink Lab. While the sesame tempura cauliflower with black garlic ponzu was an appetizer, I found it to be my main course, and you likely will too, as it is absolutely divine. Don’t try to dictate the experience at the Lab—allow the skillfully talented wait staff to take you on a memorable gastrological journey. My third and final food destination was Columbia Restaurant. This fifth-generation family owned business grabs you with the predinner bread made fresh daily. Coupled with the fact that this establishment boasts the largest private collection of Spanish wines in the world, you won’t want to leave. Beyond that, the 1905 salad and martini are mainstays. The excitement continued with live flamenco dancing as proof of why this is not just fine dining but a community staple that is not to be missed.

HOMETOWN HERO
Making South Fulton a Smart City A CONVERSATION WITH TYE HAYES, FIRST FEMALE CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER FOR THE CITY OF ATLANTA
“GROWING UP IN COLLEGE PARK ON W. HARVARD AVE., I NEVER IMAGINED BECOMING THE FIRST FEMALE CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER FOR THE CITY OF ATLANTA. My childhood apartments have since been torn down as the community has begun to transform, but I could not have imagined the amount of change that has occurred in the South Fulton (#SoFu) area today.” The term “Smart Cities” holds different meanings for different people. For Tye Hayes, it’s really about using technology to deliver city services, using data to make informed decisions when planning and budgeting and ensuring there is overall digital equity and inclusion for all residents. Smart Cities is about improving and connecting the community within the existing city as well as rallying local cities to work together to power big improvements. The success of a transitioning smart city cannot depend solely on the tools that come with advancing technology. According to Hayes, the city must also focus on ensuring gentrification doesn’t occur with innovation and that housing remains affordable for its residents. Though the objective of progressing a smart city consists of holding the existing city together and elevating as a community, there are other key elements #SoFu should consider. “In my experience, implementing strategic investments into the fiber infrastructure, leveraging public-private partnerships and proactively sharing the long-term vision with the community are also major keys to success,” Hayes says. “I am looking forward to seeing #SoFu thrive in its transition and grow into its full potential within this tech-driven era. I believe this can be done by learning from and working with the surrounding areas and without completely losing the true essence of the area I hold dear.” 34
