Difference?
• Our students are our #1 customers! • We are growing people not businesses. Our passion for our students' success drives us to be the best. • A luxury salon atmosphere instead of an institutional environment creates an elevated, real life learning experience. • We produce career ready students, not apprentice ready students. • A low Student to Teacher ratio allows for immersive learning and individualized development. • We teach multiple product lines so our students graduate with confidence and the skill set to start their careers. Stacey James Institute also gives back to the community by participating in many non-profit events and as a valued student, you can take part in this culture. Our learning environment mimics the real-world salon experience so our students are fully prepared upon graduation to start their career. Our educators go through constant continuing education so they are able to pass their extensive experience on to our students.

After all, food is not only nourishing (and delicious) but it also brings people together—whether it’s a special anniversary dinner, a much-needed lunch break with coworkers, a friend’s birthday party or even a casual weeknight meal with family. Food is often considered one of life’s great pleasures. Food and fall make a perfect pairing, and we are proud to feature local cattle company, Bootheel 7 Ranch, whose pastured, dry-aged beef was recognized by the James Beard House in New York. Specific foods are often steeped in customs, and that makes each bite even more worth savoring. Día de los Muertos celebrates lives that

STONEGATE DENTAL CARE DR. DEVIN RENTZ FOCUSES ON BRINGING SMILES TO THE PARKER COMMUNITY THROUGH HONESTY AND EDUCATION ARTICLE SERENA MONTOYA PHOTOGRAPHY ROGER BALLARD PHOTOGRAPHY 14
Parker Lifestyle | October 2019
DR. DEVIN RENTZ, PRIVATE PRACTICE DENTIST AT STONEGATE DENTAL CARE IN PARKER, SAYS HIS BUSINESS IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PRACTICES BECAUSE HE AND HIS TEAM FOCUS ON FAMILY VALUES. “Most patients comment on how homey the feel is,” he says. Devin and his wife of almost 18 years, Julie Rentz, work together at Stonegate to ensure their associates feel as if everyone is family. They focus on creating a fun environment by posting dental tips and laughable videos to their Facebook page, giving their hygienists and other associates an opportunity to share their knowledge in an entertaining way. “We try to make it so that everybody enjoys coming to work,” Devin says. Devin says he was inspired by his mother to pursue dentistry and he realized early on it was what he was meant to do. “I have an artistic side of me, and I like working with people, so dentistry is the perfect blend for me,” he says. The Rentzes bought Stonegate Dental in 2013. Their goal is to create a safe, warm environment at Stonegate Dental Care, and they say they are determined to make patients a priority. Devin says honesty and education are their overriding values. “My philosophy is education for patients; make them feel like they’ve gotten all the information that they need to make an informed decision,” Devin says. Devin and Julie, who have four children, moved from California to build their private practice in Parker. They give back to the community through sponsorships and various events. “It’s a great community, great people,” Devin says. In his spare time, Devin is involved in sports, be it watching the NFL or training for a marathon this month. The marathon is in Utah, and he will be joining his friends and nephew in the race. “I just want to challenge myself and do something different,” says Devin, who admits he’s a bit nervous about his first marathon. Devin says they love their Parker office. Through the years, they’ve been able to grow their practice in ways which aide the customer experience. They’ve already expanded their Parker location by adding more rooms. “We want to be able to accommodate everybody,” he says. Devin says they’re still growing and look forward to opportunities to accommodate more patients. And they’re considerate when it comes to scheduling appointments. “We’re able to keep up with good quality care, and that’s important to me,” says Devin. Devin says technology at this practice also sets Stonegate Dental apart. Evidence of this is their Cerec machine, which enables the staff to build crowns in a single visit instead of having to send the work offsite for a multi-appointment ordeal. There’s versatility to what the Cerec machine can do. “I have the ability to do more than just crowns on it, some bridges, some implants,” he says. Devin says he enjoys the impact he’s able to make in people’s lives and in the Parker community. He says the work is satisfying, especially with larger cases where he is doing make-over work, such as adjusting the form of a smile. But, most of all, it’s important to Devin that every patient is handled with care. “Treat them like family; that’s what it comes down to,” he says. Food has really never been
A POINT OF INTEREST FOR ME IN MY DAY-TO-DAY LIFE. I usually view food as something to prepare and satisfy me for a big day of adventuring, both in the classroom as a teacher and in the great outdoors, where I spend much of my free time roaming and playing. But a little more than a year ago, I left my job as a math teacher in Durango, Colorado, to take on a teaching position at an American school in Leysin, Switzerland. Like my love for the outdoors, this new experience was a way for me to take on a new adventure, see more of the world and experience different cultures. I love a good adventure. Adventure, in my eyes, has often been playing outside on a trail, mountain or body of water, many times pushing limits. I convinced my sister and friends to go skydiving in Moab over spring break a few years ago. More than once, friends and I drove up from Durango, where we went to college at Fort Lewis College, to catch a show at Red Rocks and then drive back to Durango through the night to get to school on time the next day. Usually, when I plan an adventure or travel, I pick places that cater to my interests, which are to play outside or to explore different cultures. But now that I’ve spent a full year immersed primarily in European culture, I’ve developed a genuine appreciation of food and drink and the central role it plays in culture. The first two weeks that I spent in Switzerland after moving, two things quickly became apparent to me. The first was that the good people of Europe love wine. One of the first events I went to in Switzerland was a wine tasting along Lake Geneva, and I noticed that no matter how much wine I drank, my glass was never empty. This was a terrific learning experience because it gave me a chance to appreciate the different flavors of wine and to begin the early development of my wine palate. Wine is a big deal out here. The
A cow bedecked in flowers and a neck bell at the Leysin, Switzerland's Almabtrieb—a celebration of cows for the delicious milk and cheese they offer
second thing I noticed is food customs of different countries are taken very seriously. A few of the classic Swiss meals are raclettes, rostis (pronounced roshtee), and fondue. Yes, the Swiss love their cheese and take it extremely seriously. Every September when fall is approaching, there is an event called Almabtrieb, where the Swiss farmers will march their cows from the high alpine pastures to the valleys. The cows are decorated with flower crowns, and bells. This is a Swiss tradition as a way to celebrate the cows for the delicious milk and cheese they give. After going to one of these parades and seeing these celebrated cows and proud farmers, it verified for me how seriously food is taken on this side of the world.

After settling into Switzerland for a couple of months, I had a three-day weekend and decided to take a little trip to Milan, Italy. The Italians know how to cook. These passionate people showed me what good pasta really looks like, how it’s meant to taste, and they taught me how to enjoy a full Italian meal. This particular meal really confirmed for me the art of a meal and the thought that goes into a good meal from the Italian perspective: bread, wine, pasta, coffee and gelato. How could you not love the Italians and their food culture after an experience like that? I’ve had the extremely good fortune to be able to travel to different countries around the world, a majority of them concentrated in Western Europe. After a year of living and working abroad, I’ve come to appreciate the food that’s put in front of me and to really savor each bite and sip.

Tips for Eating Abroad
Tip 1
SMALLER IS BETTER: One thing I’ve
Switzerland The author, Hannah Starbuck, right, with her mother Robin Singer-Starbuck standing in front of the Matterhorn Zermatt.
learned throughout my travels is that the best restaurants and cafes are ones that don’t call too much attention to themselves. Some of the best restaurants I’ve eaten at have been small in size, hidden from main streets and lack some of the big advertising and market-
ing that other restaurants can afford to have. I say always give these smaller restaurants a chance over bigger restaurants, and support a restaurant that appears a bit more humble.
Tip 2
MIND YOUR MANNERS: Teaching yourself some basic phrases and words, especially in a restaurant setting, will take you very far. Spanish-speaking people are so happy to help visitors with their Spanish and are very patient. French people will appreciate your attempts to speak their difficult language. Phrases that you should absolutely know are “hello” and “thank you.” It’s important to express gratitude to the people who bring your food; a genuine “thank you” while making eye contact goes a long way.
Tip 3
TREAT YOURSELF EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. I treated myself to one outstanding meal this summer, and it was in Paris. The entire evening itself was a joy. I bought a ticket to a cabaret show at the Moulin Rouge that included dinner and the show. I won’t say the price, but I will say the three-course dinner, champagne and brilliant show that I watched was worth every Euro. Enjoy your travels, and remember it’s OK to spoil yourself every now and again. October 2019 | Parker Lifestyle

TRADITIONAL MEXICAN HOLIDAY IS A TIME TO HONOR LOVED ONES WHO HAVE PASSED AND IS A RITE OF WELCOMING FALL
WHEN YVETTE MARQUEZ-SHARPNACK WAS A LITTLE GIRL IN EL PASO, TEXAS, SHE REMEMBERS WALKING WITH HER GRANDMOTHER A FEW TIMES TO THE NEARBY CEMETERY. They would place flowers on the gravesites of the two sons her grandma had lost as babies. “It was always fall, but she never told me that the special day was Día de los Muertos,” Yvette says. “It wasn’t until I was older and started learning about the holiday that I realized we must have gone to that cemetery around that time.” CONTINUED >

It wasn’t until Yvette’s own daughter was about 8 and her beloved grandmother had passed away that Yvette started learning more about the Mexican tradition that falls on Nov. 2. “We did it to honor my grandma. I didn’t want her memory and legacy to die,” Yvette says. “I wanted my children to know who she was, as if she was still here on earth, with my stories and memories.” Yvette has spent almost a decade diving into the traditions of her Tejano roots. In 2010, she started the blog MuyBuenoCookbook.com, which started as a way for her to write down and share with family and friends all the cherished recipes she remembered her grandmother and mother making. Many of those recipes had never been written down before. She also produces food and travel videos, which explore different aspects of Mexican-American culture. Yvette’s 2017 video, Day of the Dead Celebration, which she wrote and produced, won an Emmy Award for the short format program—informational category. Filmed at the Parker home of Yvette’s friends, Karen and George Vasquez, the video tells the meaning behind Día de los Muertos, and how to set up a traditional altar with family photos, the deceased loved one’s keepsakes and special foods. “I have always wanted to preserve the history of my family and continue to celebrate my culture, and Día de los Muertos has been the perfect occasion to celebrate my heritage,” Yvette says. Yvette says certain foods are traditional at a Día de los Muertos, such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead), decorated sugar skulls, mole, tamales and hot chocolate. “But truly I recommend making recipes that remind you of the person you are honoring,” Yvette says. “This is the time that I make all my fall favorites, like pumpkin empanadas, because they remind me of my grandma.” CONTINUED >

was invited to cook at the James Beard House this summer in NYC, Bootheel 7 Ranch was asked to be featured as the main entree—a 90-day, dry-aged NY Strip and Steak Tartare. It was an honor for us, and the meal was declared “a top-five dinner” by the James Beard committee. While it’s nice to see others recognizing the caliber of our beef, feeding local families is such a privilege and is the heart of our business. We also strongly believe in giving back. Last year, our beef donations raised more than $8,500 for local charities, including Von Miller’s Western Round-Up, which raises money for children who need vision care. Bootheel7Ranch.com
