HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
J e n n ’s Wellness Journey WHAT CATALYST OR TURNING POINT STARTED YOU ON YOUR PERSONAL WELLNESS JOURNEY? In 2011 I had a HUGE wake up call. I was in a toxic marriage, severely overweight, trapped in a cycle of self-destructive thought, in an occupation that didn’t provide any sense of fulfillment and without a regular health practice or routine. There was a moment I realized that there was so much more to life, so I began the journey of self-discovery, which led me down a beautiful path physically, but also emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and occupationally. WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED, HOW DID YOU KNOW WHAT DIRECTION TO TAKE AND WHAT YOU NEEDED TO DO? To be honest, I didn’t know. I was so unsure, BUT I knew that if I took the first step, the rest would follow. I sought a therapist as well as a coach, much like myself, who guided me. That experience gave me the knowledge and confidence needed to stay the course and see it through! WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE ON YOUR PATH TO A

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS TAKING THE FIRST STEPS TO BETTER HEALTH? If you are looking to take steps towards better health, I advise two things: First, make small changes and have grace for yourself as you work to identify what works for YOU! Second, seek help when needed. There are many people out there, like myself, that can carry some of the load for you! Having allies or a strong team around you can significantly increase your possibility for lasting change.

W h at d o e s h e a lt h y m e a n to yo u ? Being ‘healthy’ looks very different for us all, given our current life circumstance, however I think it’s the integration of states of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. When we look at health as our whole being, we begin to unlock our full potential. This means taking time to explore other areas of our lives and finding ways to maximize them. The result of such an integrative approach is abundance, in every sense of the word! THE MOST GEOGRAPHICALLY UNIQUE ISLAND IN HAWAII, THE BIG ISLANDÂ IS HOME TO BLACK SAND BEACHES, STUNNING RAINFORESTS, HARDENED LAVA DESERTS AND THE KILAUEA VOLCANO WHICH WAS ACTIVE THROUGH LATE 2018. The west side of the island is sunny and dry while the east side near Hilo averages 236 days of rain each year. The Big Island is, you guessed it, big! It is 4,028 square miles which is bigger than all of the other islands combined. Because of this, it is important to rent a car and leave yourself plenty of time to see the entire island. We stayed for about six days which gave us enough time to see the highlights around the island. Start your week in Kailua Kona where you will find warm temperatures, sunshine and beautiful white sandy beaches. Our favorite beaches on the west side of the island include Magic Sands Beach, Maniniowali Beach and Hapuna Beach State Park. They are perfect for sunbathing and swimming.

CREATE A MASTER RETREAT FOR BETTER REST, RELAXATION AND ROMANCE

WE SPEND ABOUT ONE THIRD OF OUR LIFE IN THE MASTER BEDROOM, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGNING AND DECORATING, IT’S THE ROOM THAT OFTEN
GETS
OVERLOOKED.
People
tend to spend more time and money on the public spaces of their homes such as the entry, kitchen or living areas. Carly Werner, Designer and Visual Merchandiser for Bassett Furniture, explains, “Creating a relaxing bedroom is important and worth the effort. It should be a space that we love to be in. It should be beautiful and functional.” When planning out your master retreat, think about the purpose of the room. Everyone needs rest, but you may also use your room for relaxing, reading, romance, and preparing for the day. Carly’s first tip is to remove anything from the room that is not related to those purposes. Clutter is never relaxing or serene. Having adequate storage to tuck away extra blankets and reading material helps minimize visual distractions.

Since the main purpose of the room is a restful nights sleep, take the time to find bedding that you absolutely love. You will not regret splurging a little on the perfect sheets, softest blankets and most comfortable pillow you can find. Snuggling into a cozy bed at the end of the day is one of life’s true pleasures. Other elements to consider are lighting and color. Having adequate light such as task lighting, or table lamps for when you need extra light, and room darkening shades or curtains for when you need to sleep, will allow you to be comfortable day or night. Window treatments can add color and texture as well as muting sound and light and have a softening effect. When choosing color for the bedroom, less really is more. Intense colors are not as relaxing as softer tones. If you love bold orange for example, use it sparingly for a hint of color in a more neutral overall scheme. Carly’s last tip is to personalize your room with meaningful finishing touches. “More than any other room in the house, your bedroom is truly your personal space and should be filled with things that are meaningful to you such as family photos and sentimental items.” Learning to balance accessories around a central focal point can anchor the room. Some examples of restful accessories from nature include plants, wood, and linen. TIPS
+ Avoid overcrowding the space. Three feet is a good distance for a walkway
between furniture. Allow 18 inches clearance to open drawers and cabinets.
+ Use rugs to add color and pattern and define the space in the room for different purposes.
+ A mirror will reflect light and make a room feel lighter and brighter. January 2020 | Meridian Lifestyle

PARTING THOUGHTS
Inspired b y S u c c e s s PHOTOGRAPHY GRETCHEN MCCANTS
Brooke Ochojski
WHAT STARTED YOUR CAREER PATH? I knew I wanted to be an RN in High School. My mom battled many health problems throughout her lifetime. I always had a desire to help people like her and be an advocate for them. Years later I left traditional nursing to open businesses and now own and operate Lips By Brooke, soon to be Skin N’ Tox, a Medispa specializing in healthy skin and cosmetic injectables. I love helping people feel confident and help them reach their skin care goals. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PROUD OF? Being a mother is by far the hardest, yet most rewarding work I do. I am proud of my kids every day. Watching them grow and mature and create their own paths in this lifetime brings me joy. They amaze me continually and are my greatest accomplishment. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Success means: feeling a sense of accomplishment, working hard and not giving up, failing and trying again, doing your best, helping others, resting your head on your pillow at night and knowing tomorrow is a new day with new opportunities, facing your fears, pushing your body, mind and spirit to the limit, then giving it a little more. All these things make up my definition of success. ANY ADVICE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION? Be more present. Put down your cell phones, engage in conversation with your friends, your family, your teachers, your coaches, your peers. Build meaningful relationships and let go of ones that no longer serve you. Challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone. It’s ok to feel

BROOKE “When two of my friends invited me to join them for an Orangetheory workout two years ago, I had no idea that it would end up making such a huge impact on my life. I WAS HOOKED!! I fell in love with the workouts, the coaches, the staff and the people who would soon become my OTF family. These workouts have given me my life back. I have taken back control of my health and fitness, and I am strong, happy and confident once again and as a bonus I have lost 35 pounds! Thank you OTF!
