ways to ignite your taste buds, fill your belly and wet your whistle. The Peters Cartridge Factory rehab project is finally underway. The long-abandoned factory that has piqued our curiosity and intrigued ghost hunters for years will be the new home of Cartridge Brewing (the first tenant to hop on board this newly renovated space). We caught up with one of the owners, Kyle Hackbarth, to get a sneak peek at plans for the brand-new brewery set to open in the spring of next year. But as this is the food issue, we didn’t disappoint. Thunderdome Restaurant Group, the local masterminds behind Maplewood, Bakersfield and the Eagle, recently opened their 40th restaurant, CityBird, right in our very own backyard in Harper’s Point. Even better, this innovative restaurant group plans to expand their delicious domain further into the ’burbs (and beyond), tempting us all with sensational new dining options. Bill, Donna, Mark and Jennifer were on their way to Maplewood to enjoy an overdue brunch together. Beforehand, Bill and Donna made it known they planned to pick up the tab. While Jenn and Mark were very appreciative, they replied it wasn’t necessary since Bill and Donna were retired and no longer generating income. Donna insisted—and was excited to explain how she and Bill had built a plan with their advisors at Family Wealth Advisory Group for exactly these types of occasions. •First, they divided their anticipated expenses into essential and nonessential expenses—they’d know what needed to be planned for and what could be postponed. •Next, they addressed inflation and investment growth, deciding to use high inflationary and low market performance numbers to be conservative. •Once they envisioned their different nonessential expenses, they prioritized them—if needed, they’d know which ones could be eliminated first. •Last, they invested according to each corresponding goal … assets set aside for extras like eating out were put into slightly more risky investments, knowing these expenses weren’t essential. Although Mark and Jennifer are grateful for their parents’ generosity, they appreciate even more knowing Bill and Donna built this type of family outing into their long-term plans. See how Family Wealth Advisory Group can help you with your long-term plan.

CHILANGO BRINGS FRESH, AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD TO THE SUBURBS

16

Loveland Lifestyle | October 2019

“CHILANGO” IS SPANISH SLANG FOR SOMEONE WHO IS A NATIVE OF MEXICO CITY. Of the husband and wife team who own and operate the fresh-casual Mexican restaurant by the same name, Mark Bennett refers to himself as the literal Chilango, having been born and raised in Mexico City by British parents. All nicknames aside, Chilango Fresh Mexican has elevated the notion of suburban Mexican food. The restaurant serves up delicious and authentic tacos, empanadas, flautas, enchiladas, quesadillas and more, all made with fresh ingredients prepared daily. “We focus on very clean food. We don’t have a freezer, we don’t have a microwave, we’re shipped food every day. We make everything fresh, so it’s all truly scratch-made,” Mark says. Growing up in Mexico City with a chef mother certainly influenced his desire to one day run his own Mexican restaurant. “I learned from her,” Mark says. “My mother would always prepare fresh, authentic Mexican food when I was growing up, and when we decided to do this, that’s what we decided to go with.” To that end, the Bennetts pride themselves on standing out from the crowd and making sure all their dishes have a distinct flavor profile so the menu items remain consistent. “When you eat the tacos, you can eat them with your eyes closed and you would know which ones you were eating if you’d had them before,” Mark says. “You wouldn’t need your eyes to tell you. A lot of places you go, if you separate it all out and you taste the proteins themselves, they kind of start to blend together—there’s no real differentiator, nothing that makes them distinct.” “A lot of our recipes are very simple, made with fresh ingredients and executed well,” Mark says with a smile.

T he names are as varied as their cuisine _ BAKERSFIELD, EAGLE, KRUEGER’S, KAZE. Downtown delights even the

most casual connoisseurs of cuisine have most likely heard of, if not sampled (repeatedly) in person. A fraternity of seriously good food, all under the watch of one local authority: Thunderdome Restaurant Group. No surprise, they’re the very same masterminds behind three other freshfocused options right here in our neck of the woods … if you haven’t experienced Maplewood, Currito and CityBird, you’re in for a treat. It started with two brothers and a burrito. Cincy-born Joe and John Lanni launched Currito in Clifton in 2005. Five years and nearly a dozen locations later, there was a need for a bar—so they turned to Alex Blust, a local friend with the chops to make it work. “Alex helped us get a bar program set up,” Joe recalls. “And we thought, maybe we’ll do something together … it was just left at that.” Fate (and 3CDC) intervened. The two became three— and Bakersfield was born. “The growth from there was organic,” Joe says. “John and I were going to continue growing Currito, Alex was going to continue his hotel work—it was supposed to be a fun side project. It just evolved.” That evolution was Thunderdome, now with eight concepts and 41 locations across the Midwest and East Coast. CityBird in Harper’s Point and Blue Ash’s Currito represent 40 and 41, respectively. “I think people go into Currito and CityBird and assume it’s just some chain from somewhere else,” Joe says. “We’re proud to be from Cincinnati—we’re based here. We definitely intend on continuing to grow all over the city, and these restaurants up here are the first part of that commitment.” “We’re really excited about everything that’s happening.” So are we, Joe. So are we. ThunderdomeRestaurants.com

Destination: DIG IN!

Now let’s get down to business—the real business—what to eat? Joe gave us the inside scoop, his favorite fare, for each of the three stops on your local Thunderdome journey. Will you choose CityBird’s satisfying savory crunch, Currito’s build-your-own brilliance, or Maplewood’s fine-casual coastal flair? Hidden gems no more—these three meals were made for your delectation.

BUT FIRST THUNDERDOME

(CON TI N U ED)

CityBird: TENDERS & FRIES

Yes, there’s slaw. And salads. And the spicy sandwich (!). Don’t even get us started on the house-made sauces (that Jalapeño Hot is spicy-pepper genius). The real star of the show is, no surprise, the tenders themselves. With cage-free, all-natural, free-roaming chicken—no antibiotics, ever—the tenders are brined in-house, then dipped in a from-scratch dredge. Even the size of the tenders was carefully considered in order to deliver the most perfect bite, every time. And the fries? “It’s all about the seasoning.” CityBirdTenders.com | Harper’s Point

Maplewood:

GUAJILLO CHICKEN BOWL This beauty is a balanced blend of bold Mexican flavors, fresh ingredients and West Coast attitude. Built on a quinoa/brown rice blend, the vibrant veggies and greens work their signature magic with the chips and guajillo-braised chicken (that mild chili pepper zing goes perfectly with a Blackberry Lemonade or Super Green Margarita). “I think it’s quintessentially Maplewood … it’s one of my favorites—light, bright and on-trend.” MaplewoodKitchenAndBar.com Deerfield Towne Center

Currito:

GREEN GODDESS SALAD A summertime special, this seasonal salad was

such a bestseller, they gave it a full-time job. “It’s one of those rare dishes that on paper doesn’t sound like it will work—but in reality, it’s delicious.” Meant to showcase all the items on Currito’s cold line, it’s affectionately (informally) known as the “drag you though the garden” salad. With a cucumber-tahini vinaigrette that’s both bright and tart (a nod to Chef Stephanie’s brilliance), this glorious gathering of greens is not only healthy, it’s truly divine. BLOOMS & BERRIES BLOSSOMS INTO A FAMILY-FRIENDLY AGRIBUSINESS

Still Growing

WHILE THE PAST 20 YEARS HAVE SEEN BLOOMS & BERRIES FARM MARKET SERVING UP A HEALTHY SLICE OF AUTUMN AMUSEMENT WITH THEIR FALL ON THE FARM FESTIVAL (THINK CORN MAZE, HAYRIDES, CARAMEL APPLES AND, OF COURSE, PUMPKINS GALORE), THIS FAMILY BUSINESS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT. One of the first things you’ll notice when talking with co-owner Jeff Probst is the excitement he has for his business. It’s palpable. Even though he didn’t move to the farm until he was 12, Jeff says he had spent enough time outdoors and learning about farming from his father that when his family took over the 61 acres of land (purchased by his great grandparents in 1939), it seemed like a natural progression. “My dad and his sister and brother put themselves through college working on the farm, but it didn’t look like anything we’re doing today,” Jeff says. “In 1999, my parents were looking for me to get some experience and understand different pieces of the business, as well as find a way to pay for college. So we moved back onto the property and planted an 24

Loveland Lifestyle | October 2019

acre of strawberries. We opened shortly afterward with strawberries, pumpkins and a few plants—and we’ve grown ever since.” Jeff also paid for college by working on the farm. After graduation in 2007, he took a sales job. Six weeks later, he quit and came home to Blooms & Berries. “I thought, if I’m going to do it, then now’s the time, so I came back to run it with my mom. In 2015, we put up the Market Barn, and we keep taking on new projects and growing a little bit every year,” Jeff says. That incremental growth has led to an outcropping of near yearround activities for the farm, including the popular Fall on the Farm and you-pick berries days (and other assorted vegetables like green beans, sugar snap peas and potatoes), plus their two local roadside stands and seasonal garden center. “We’re just trying to make it easy for families that don’t have the time or space to garden to come out here and have a true agricultural experience, get their kids’ hands dirty and learn where their food comes from,” Jeff says. A beer garden will soon be brewing up a lot of excitement as the latest addition to Fall on the Farm. Open on weekends and for special events through the end of October, the new garden focuses on a variety of craft beer, with some local brews mixed in. Of-age visitors can grab a beverage and walk with their families and friends through the corn maze and other fall features. “I think [what customers love] is there’s always something new,” Jeff says. “They’re always going to have a moment of discovery when they show up. ... there’s a little something they didn’t know about or didn’t see before—we take pride in those things.” BloomsAndBerries.com | 9669 S. CARTRIDGE BREWING IS “HONORING THE PAST, BREWING THE FUTURE”

28

Loveland Lifestyle | October 2019

G

OLDEN SUNLIGHT GLEAMS THROUGH TOWERING WINDOW OPENINGS. The rusted iron and broken glass panes have nearly vanished. The space is illuminated with details time almost forgot: soaring concrete ceilings, wood beams, intricate piping, unique symmetry and colorful graf-

fiti tags. For decades, the mostly abandoned Peters Cartridge Company has haunted the Kings Mills valley where Grandin Road meets the Little Miami River. On a sunny afternoon, however, the historic factory seems less like a mysterious eyesore and more of an impressively solid blank slate ready for its next chapter. Business partners Kyle Hackbarth and Anthony Cook have stepped up to write the first lines of the rest of this landmark’s story. Before the turn of the 20th century, steam locomotives clanged along the willow-lined river. The Civil War and later two World Wars raged on. The Peters Cartridge Company, part of the King family legacy, thrived under the demand. Production of shotgun cartridges boomed—often literally as accidental explosions causing injuries and death were common. But most current residents in the area know it for its eerie, looming emptiness. Once production went silent mid-century, the site shifted from a bustling manufacturing center to hollowed-out hulls with more pigeons, feral cats and curious trespassers than industry. It’s the kind of place that fosters imaginations to run wild with ghost stories and rumors. Developers hope to shift those perceptions and create a welcoming space. Kyle is an entrepreneur, U.S. Army veteran and a chemical industry account executive specializing in breweries. He’s also half of the duo behind Cartridge Brewing, an upscale brewpub slated as the first official tenant of the Peters Cartridge redevelopment plan. Kyle says opening a brewery has been on his mind for years. “When I was 17 or 18, I applied for a church scholarship, and they asked ‘what do you want to do in your future?’ I said I wanted to own a brewery.” He won that scholarship, went to Purdue, and since then, he’s made his way through tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, an MBA program and starting a family. In 2017 after scouring the city for possible locations for his dream, a township employee asked if he’d met with the Peters Cartridge owners. After years of EPA struggles to clean the site of any remaining pollutants and whispers about economic challenges hindering development, Kyle was skeptical. “My natural response was, ‘Is that really going to happen?’” The short answer was yes, but he’d need patience. Kyle met with developers Bloomfield/Schon on the Peters Cartridge property, knowing what he wanted in a location. “You have to look for a place with history, a place with a story.” He knew he had found it at the factory and moved quickly to secure the space. Progress, however, was slow. Nearly two years after the deal plus months of planning and wooing investors, the EPA finally cleared the Superfund site for development in the fall of 2018.

access from the nearby trail for cyclists and pedestrians. Beginning in 2022, Warren County will replace and relocate the narrow bridge nearby, softening curves and easing traffic. As for concerns about the factory’s chilling reputation? Kyle hasn’t experienced any frights himself and notes most tales he’s encountered are from those with personal connections to the site. “When you start a dialogue about a place like this, people are naturally going to want to tell you very positive memories,” he says. Of course, he’s heard the scary stories, too. Still, Cartridge Brewing won’t dwell on a paranormal past—but rather acknowledge it as part of the continuing story. “It’s a balancing act. I think we just have to accept the history of a place. Also available is the stately selection from Ohio’s Amish Country and the new Trisha Yearwood collection, which offers a rustic-chic farmhouse table that comes with extension leaves. “Our customers want to customize their room to fit exactly how many people they’re entertaining,” Lin says. “Family of four around the table? Hosting a party for 12? No problem.” The collection contains well-matched sideboards, servers and buffet tables as well. “After things are passed around, most people want to set it down out of the way—not everything you’re serving can fit in the center of the table,” Lin says. “So a sideboard, server or buffet is the perfect place to set your wine, your glasses or extra plates.” No matter what your dining room needs, the ability to customize your choices with artisan, unique touches means you’ll be eager, excited and most of all ready to gather together this season.

ARTICLE BILL FURBEE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED “We bring a team of cleaning specialists out,” he says. “And that allows us to deliver on quality and attention to detail.” That highly skilled approach is especially paramount in their support of the nonprofit Cleaning for a Reason. Since 2005, this organization has partnered with home services organizations nationwide to provide no-cost home cleaning for women undergoing cancer treatment—a cause The Maids has been supporting for more than 10 years. “These women are going through a lot, so if we can help in just a small way by cleaning the house—provide them a little bit of relief—it means a lot to us. We do as many as we can,” Terry says. “We’re primarily an organization of females, so we always want to do something that helps women or families, especially those battling cancer.” Terry credits his staff for this commitment to our community. “I’m blessed with a lot of longtime employees,” noting one who’s been with

LOCAL’S CHOICE

Red, Red Wine

ARTICLE BILL FURBEE

SIMPLE STEPS TO KEEP YOUR TEETH IN TIP-TOP SHAPE

—Makes Your Smile Not-So-Fine FROM MERLOT TO CABERNET, MALBEC TO PINOT, A GLASS OF RED WINE IS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE PERFECT WAY TO RELAX. The problem is, red wine is also notorious for a tendency to stain otherwise healthy teeth. Fear not—there are a few easy steps any occasional wine drinker can take to alleviate the impact of red wine on those pearly whites. “Obviously, always see your dentist regularly,” shares Bonnie Pugh, a hygienist at Michael Kreimer DDS. “That’s No. 1.” Michael Kreimer DDS has been serving Loveland and the surrounding areas since 1991, offering an array of services—from preventative and cosmetic dentistry to dental implants and sedation dentistry. While routine dental cleanings certainly do contribute to a healthy smile, let’s take a look at a few other tricks that can come in handy.

1

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH before a night out helps prevent red wine from sticking to your teeth. That story checks out, says Bonnie. “It’s better to brush before,” she advises. “Because you don’t want to brush in the acids [found in wine].” SELTZER WATER is also an ally in the battle against unsightly wine stains. “Drink seltzer after wine,” Bonnie advises, pointing out that healthy hydration is also important.

3

Many wine tastings offer SNACKS LIKE CHEESE, which complement the wine but also help fight tooth stains— Bonnie credits the texture of most cheeses for this benefit but notes that other snacks may help, too.

4

Finally, sometimes the order of DIFFERENT WINES you enjoy on any single occasion can matter. “Don’t drink white wine, and then change to red,” Bonnie says. “White wine has acid also, and can make your teeth a bit more primed for the red wine to stain.” “So start with red, finish with white,” Bonnie laughs.
