The winding down of the year always brings about a time of reflection for us— remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day parade or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of life putting together a monthly magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from all of you that have made what we do possible. We also take this chance to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations or charities.

My story is different than most realtors in the profession in Houston. I came to the United States over 30 years ago. I soon realized that the United States was so different than my home country of Finland. America is truly the land of opportunity. Having experienced many moves both internationally and domestically, I was able to see the best in my profession and also the very worst. When I got into real estate over 20 years ago I made a promise to myself and my clients that I would provide the services they justly deserve and what meets my high expectation level. I soon found if you offered quality service, which meant being available 24/7 and having the resources to help my clients was somewhat rare in my field. The rest became history. I formed Houston Luxury properties which is solely owned by me. I have purposely kept it small as it affords me the ability to interact and represent each of my clients. Along the way, I have been blessed beyond my wildest expectations. Clients become friends and longtime relationships have been forged. What I enjoy is the thrill of a Family’s face when they get the home that they thought was out of reach, or a home that has been sold that they thought would never sell or the satisfaction of having a new family come to Houston and find the home and community that matches their needs. Finally, what defines me and Houston Luxury clients is giving back. Give back to your family, your clients and your community. I am blessed with a husband who supports me and my business, my two boys that I raised as a single parent and I am so proud of what they have become, my daughter in law and grandchildren and the many clients over the years that have trusted me with one of their largest assets--their home. In my mind the only way to get here is constantly finding ways to pay it forward. My husband and I are proud that we have worked with and have supported a number of children’s charities in Houston and continue to do so. Along the way if I can work in a round of golf once a month, I am elated. Ask yourself the next time that you buy or sell your home. Do you want one of those mega real estate teams in which you never see the name at the top of the billing or do you want the owner of a small real estate brokerage firm who spends the time to understand your priorities and can flex to accommodate your needs? This is Eija Watson And this is Houston Luxury Properties.

LOOKING BEYOND THE BUZZ

ARTICLE BY ELIZABETH BRONOUGH PHOTOGRAPHY BY NADINE PARKER

THE SUN IS GOING DOWN, AND IT’S TIME TO COMPLETE AFTERNOON CHORES, FEED THE ANIMALS (HOGS, CHICKENS, SHETLAND PONIES), TEND THE GARDEN AND WHATEVER ELSE MAY BE ON THE LIST FOR THE DAY BEFORE SITTING DOWN TO A MEAL OF FRESH VEGETABLES AND MEATS. Just another afternoon on the Buzbee farm. It’s easy to imagine a young Tony and his siblings slopping the hogs and digging potatoes as he describes his childhood. I could almost hear the animals and taste the venison as I was transported to a past in Atlanta, Texas. It’s not easy to find time in his busy schedule, especially this close to the mayoral election, but he agrees to squeeze me in between meetings and events during a haircut at R. Valentino Salon. It’s an intimate setting lending itself to the task at hand. I wanted to get to know the real Tony Buzbee. It’s immediately clear that Tony has admiration for his family, which is the core of his values. He describes his youth on the farm as a “rough upbringing.” “We didn’t have a whole lot as far as material things, but you can tell we are a very close-knit family,” he says. His dad was known as a man to be reckoned with, a “kick your a**” kind of guy when the need arose, and a man who instilled the importance of family and hard work, none of which was lost on Tony. We don’t always recognize the defining moments in our lives when they happen, but we all have them. For Tony, his path was changed with a random act of kindness by a neighbor, Billy. Tony had already enlisted in the Navy by way of a delayed entry plan when Billy saw him play football. Billy saw something special in Tony and was compelled to invite him to Texas A&M for a football game. They toured the campus and the Corps of Cadets living quarters, saw the Corps march on to the field and the Aggie Band. He was hooked; he wanted to go to Texas A&M and be a Marine. He graduated from college and went on to become a Marine Corps Officer, but his life would soon take another turn while on his second deployment to the Middle East. An avid reader, he finished all the available books and then picked up an LSAT study guide from one of his colleagues and found it interesting. Taking the practice tests, he realized he was pretty good at the subject. Upon returning to the United States, he did well on the real LSAT exam, which opened possibilities. That’s when he decided to leave the Marines and go to law school at the University of Houston Law Center. The rest is history. He graduated Summa Cum Laude, and numerous successes and achievements followed. He is a successful lawyer, a property developer and business owner, a philanthropist, an he is now in the running for mayor of Houston. Of all his accomplishments, he considers his greatest success. “Having raised kids [and nieces and nephews] that are kind and responsible.” His secret to success? “Hard work, with some degree of talent and a little luck.” He spoke several times of Billy’s random act of kindness, that trip to Texas A&M, which made such an impact in his life. You can easily see how important giving back is to him. He regularly takes time out to meet with young starry-eyed individuals and carries on the Billy legacy CONTINUED >

by taking some to games. With a little reluctance, he shared one of the Buzbee family traditions. His parents, although poor, regularly gave to the needy. They’d gather food, meats their dad brought home from work and vegetables grown on the farm, and deliver care packages to families in need with an added bonus of a hug from all the kids. Today, without the cameras and the media, Tony still carries on this tradition with his family. He works side by side with his kids, cooking and creating care packages hey hand-deliver to the homeless. You’d think the Tony you see in the media would want to leave a legacy of power and money. But with love and adoration, he stated his legacy is “what I already have today: children, nieces and nephews who are kind, socially engaged and responsible.” Of course, I had to asked why he wants to be the mayor of Houston. “I just want to give something back just like Billy [did for me],” Tony says. It goes back to his deep-rooted history of generosity and desire to make a difference. He and his family knew the cost of putting themselves out there, the subject of criticism and scrutiny as is the case for anyone running for office. But he felt Houston could do better, and he could make it happen. He wants to make the city that has been good to him and his family “work the way it should.” I can say I didn’t know what to expect when sitting down with Tony after all I’d seen and read. But the man I met today was truly down to earth, respectful, kind and spoke adamantly of dedication to family and hard work. 16

Miss Money Honey CHILDREN'S BOOK AUTHOR BECKY PAGE GIVES US AN INSIDE LOOK AT HER NEW BOOK, MISS MONEY HONEY AND THE RIDDLE

ARTICLE ABBY STRICKLAND AND BECKY PAGE PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL CARR

CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I have recently launched my first book, Miss Money Honey and the Riddle. I have an extensive background in education, theater and finance as well as being an elementary teacher and an educational curriculum writer. I’ve also served as the executive director of SBISD’s Education Foundation and was the founding executive director of the SBISD’s Academy of Finance program. I have served as the executive director of Houston’s Masquerade Theatre Company and the interim executive director for Queensbury Theatre in City Centre. I recently founded the nonprofit Financial Knowledge Foundation for Children and serve as its executive director. I returned to Memorial with my husband to raise my children, and we are currently longtime residents for over the last 25 years. When I am not writing, you can find me outside enjoying nature with family and friends. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WRITE A CHILDREN’S BOOK? My passion for teaching children at a young age about financial awareness and my knowledge of the negative impact of bullying among our youth led me to write Miss Money Honey and the Riddle. In this story, Jimmy notices his friend Benny mistreated by classmates, but Jimmy isn’t sure how to help. After a visit from Miss Money Honey and Penny Lenny in a dream, Jimmy learns the valuable lesson about being a good friend and standing up for what’s right.

24

Memorial Lifestyle | November 2019

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND MISS MONEY HONEY AND EDUCATING CHILDREN ABOUT MONEY? I wanted to create a character that children could relate to and would listen to, but also feel comfortable talking to. I wanted all my money characters to teach a well-being life lesson to my readers but also teach them the basis of our monetary system. With the penny being different in color and smallest in value, I felt it would be the perfect scenario for a bullying situation to happen between it and the other coins. If it weren’t for the penny’s value, the different coins and dollar bills would not exist—thus teaching lessons of acceptance, respect for others, and “judging a book by its cover.” ARE YOUR CHARACTERS BASED ON REAL-LIFE PEOPLE? Although none of my characters are inspired by real life people, I did want them to have a magical presence that could be imagined through the eyes of a child. Every holiday while I was growing up, The Wizard of Oz or Peter Pan would come on TV. I wanted to create a magical element in my book that replicates what made me love those shows so much. Thus there is Miss Money Honey and Penny Lenny appearing in a dream.

MISS MONEY HONEY

(CON TI N U ED)

BULLYING IS SUCH A SERIOUS TOPIC. WHY WAS IT ESSENTIAL FOR YOU TO INCLUDE THIS IN YOUR BOOK? Back when I was in education, I read an article that one in every four children under the age of 10 in our country is either a victim of bullying or is acting like a bully. I realized that we need to help young children identify not only what bullying is but also the negative impact it has on others. I wanted Miss Money Honey to become the voice of the bullied child that is too afraid to speak up. So many children who are bullied internalize what happens to them so they cannot or will not express the sadness or grief the bullying has caused. Many think that something must be wrong with them for them to be a victim of bullying. I hope that children who are bullied will find my book a useful tool to help them. I want to encourage them to talk about their situation and know their voices can be heard. I also intended my book to give young children an appropriate way to handle a bullying situation. THE BOOK IS NOW BECOMING A MUSICAL. HOW DID THIS COME ABOUT? The idea started years ago when I was working with Masquerade Theatre. We performed the musical Galveston at the Hobby Center, which was co-written by Broadway composer/lyricist and producer Mark York. Mark and I became lifelong friends, and we came up with the idea of writing a children’s musical based on the book. We hope to have the musical completed by early 2020 and ready to hit Broadway by 2021. ANY ADVICE OR TIPS YOU CAN OFFER ASPIRING WRITERS? My advice to aspiring writers is to follow your dream and never give up on it. It was back in 2002 that I actually “dreamed” the storyline of this book, but because of the twists and beautiful turns in my life until now in 2019, I kept putting my writing on hold. After getting married and having children and grandchildren, I finally decided it was time for me to finish the book! So I would say, it’s never too late to follow that dream you had; I’m so glad I finally did! ANY ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ABOUT YOUR BOOK? My hope for parents, teachers, counselors or anyone who will listen is to take the time to create a safe environment for children to discuss how bullying makes them feel. Unresolved bullying can cause other problems, like isolation, addictions, self-harming, eating disorders, bullying revenge and even youth suicide, so it is essential bullying is never overlooked.

LOCAL’S CHOICE

groove to

the music WHETHER WE FEEL HAPPY OR SAD, EXCITED OR LONELY, MUSIC IS ALWAYS THERE FOR US. Gonzalo Arjona, the owner of Groove Music School, has always loved music. After graduating from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and spending a few years working in the music industry, Gonzalo put aside his music career to start a family. But when he began to take his children to music lessons, he realized he had a dream to have a music school of his own. Since purchasing a music school back in 2005, Gonzalo has now grown Groove Music School to two locations, with 13 instructors and more than 300 students. Out of the students, many are also pursuing a career in music. One student gained a singing scholarship to New York, while another won the Sugarland Super Star Junior signing competition in 2019 with an original song. So how is Groove Music School so successful? Gonzalo strongly believes in making music fun and enjoyable. It requires hard work and practice, but learning a new instrument or singing a song should be something you always look forward to. Gonzalo and his team of incredible instructors believe in providing the best possible opportunities for their students. From classical to soul, rock to country, there's a music genre out there for everyone. After all, music is universal, something we can all find our groove too.
