been to in a while, like the new Aquarium at Union Station (which will hopefully be re-opened by the time this issue comes out), the newly-remodeled Muny, or sitting on the patio at Rendezvous Café & Wine Bar in O’Fallon. Getting outdoors can be fun, healthy and helpful, by volunteering with the St. Charles County Parks Department. There are lots of ways to help--from clearing trails to cleaning up streams to building birdhouses. See page 12 for more ideas. We’ve also included ideas for amping up your landscaping. Whether you have a green thumb or not, Daniel’s Farm & Greenhouses is a great place to start working on your curb appeal.

+ Special event staffing + Interpretive program presentation + Mural painting at the Youth Activity Park + Dog park maintenance / operation / rules enforcement + Historical collection, preservation, and interpretation + Additional projects as proposed by the organization + Trail Work: The Parks Department schedules periodic maintenance work days to keep our natural trails in pristine condition throughout the year. This is a great team-building service project for groups and businesses and offers an opportunity for individuals to become better acquainted with hiking, biking, and horse enthusiasts throughout the county. + Watch Dog Program: Due to the popularity of the off-leash area, the Parks Dept. seeks volunteers to assist us in keeping the facilities safe and beautiful for years to come. These volunteers dedicate a few hours each year, while enjoying the facilities with their pets, to help ensure that the posed rules are followed and to share information with fellow dog lovers on proper park etiquette, health care, and safety issues. + The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department teams up with the Saint Louis Zoo to offer FrogWatch USA volunteer training. FrogWatch USA is a citizen science program and volunteering is open to individuals, groups, and families interested in learning about the wetlands in their communities by reporting on the calls of local frogs and toads. Being a part of this program allows trained volunteers to become directly involved with gathering information that can ultimately lead to practical and workable ways to stop amphibian decline. Organizations, individuals, and groups interested in participating in these volunteer opportunities with the St. Charles County Parks should register online at stccparks.org or call the Parks Department at 636-949-7535.

The Daniels Farm & Greenhouses Team

18

St. Charles County Lifestyle | April 2020

Mr. & Mrs. Ray Koenig moved to the farm, on Jungermann Rd. in St. Peters, in 1956. It started as a 70-acre farm with approximately 550 apple trees and 500 peach trees in their orchard. The family raised strawberries (started u-pick berries in the early 60’s), and many other fruits and vegetables. Most crops were hand planted, hand picked, hand packed and taken to local grocery stores and produce row off Broadway in St. Louis. Some produce was sold at St. Charles Farmers Market in the 70’s and 80’s. The first greenhouse was built in the mid 1960’s to raise a few hanging baskets requested by produce customers. By the middle of the next decade a total of four greenhouses had been built next to the barn. Upon the retirement of Daniel’s father, Ray, in 1990, Daniel took possession and responsibility of Koenig’s on the Hill in August of that year. He built five new Quonset greenhouses to replace the original greenhouses. Over the next 10 years, Daniel continued expanding the farm. In 1993, he set up a mum growing field for 15,000 plants, installed a drip irrigation system and built the sales and display area in front of the greenhouses. In 1994, they started selling a few trees and shrubs. The nursery expanded in 1998, and in 2003 added rock bins for gravel, mulch, and topsoil. In 1997 the business name was changed to Daniel’s Farm & Greenhouses. Now, with over 15 Greenhouses, the selection is huge and the colorful greenhouses are breathtaking. “Although prior to Mother’s Day is too early to plant tender greenhouse plants

SALON DE CHRISTE’

gets a total facelit After 23 years as the top salon and spa in St. Charles County, the spa at Salon De Christe’ on Mid Rivers Mall Drive is brand new again. The spa industry has changed greatly in the last five years and we’ve rebuilt our spa to provide state-of-the-art facilities for microblading, dermaplaning, and waxing services in addition to our facial and massage rooms. The new spa rooms are more spacious and fit our mission of providing a caring and comfortable atmosphere. The designs for the newly remodeled spa were done by Melissa Haynes with Melbrooke Interiors. The redesigned spa features six function rooms that are utilized for facials, peels, and treatments, as well as a complete selection of waxing services in a 100% private and completely sanitary atmosphere. You can relax in the spa lounge next to the fireplace before your service or enjoy a full day package that includes a custom spa lunch. Salon De Christe’ constantly offers education to keep their staff on the cutting edge of what’s new in spa services. Salon De Christe’ introduced dermaplaning in 2017, which provides guests manual exfoliation using a sterile blade to remove dead skin cells and facial hairs from the epidermis, leaving a smooth surface. In 2018, the spa sent four estheticians to Chicago for advanced training on microblading, a semi-permanent procedure for enhancing the appearance of sparse or thinning eyebrows. Pigment is deposited by way of “scratching” into the top layer of skin using a hand tool with a blade formed of tiny needles. Microblading creates a very natural looking brow for those with little to no brows. Salon De Christe’ also offers eyelash extensions, which provide fuller, longer lashes to look glamorous without mascara. Eyelash extensions save time in your daily routine, while enhancing natural eyelashes by adding thickness and length. One of the most popular services at Salon De Christe’ are the massage therapy sessions. Select a 30, 60 or 90-minute service. Then choose a relaxing Elemental Nature Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Fusion Stone Massage, or Pre-natal Massage. Unlike the massage ‘chains,’ the 60-minute massage here is really 60 minutes. Salon De Christe’ does not take away from your service for ‘paperwork.’ We also offer a massage series package that gives you one FREE massage with your purchase of four massages. Top it all off with a relaxing pedicure in the semi-private pedicure room while you enjoy a relaxing massage chair and foot massage. A manicure and paraffin treatment are the finishing touch on a great day at the spa at Salon De Christe.’ And if you love the spa at Salon De Christe’ on West Clay in St. Charles, you can look forward to a reinvented spa there this summer!

S p r i n gt i m e B u c k e t L i st “SPRING IS NATURE’S WAY OF SAYING, ‘LET’S PARTY.” --Robin Williams Shake off the winter blues and make the most of the exhilarating spring season by getting outdoors to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine, and loads of fun with these family activities. PLANT A FLOWER OR VEGETABLE GARDEN. Gather up the kids, head to the nursery, and pick out flats of flowers or packets of vegetable seeds. When you get home, plan the arrangement and spacing of the plants. Then have everyone pitch in with digging and planting. To maintain your kids’ interest in the garden, set up a watering schedule, and have everyone take turns throughout the season. FLY A KITE. A breezy spring day is perfect for flying kites. For even more fun, order a kite kit in advance for your family to design your own. Then, check out Youtube videos on how to fly a kite before you head out to ensure your adventure is a success. MAKE A YARD ORNAMENT. Gather up your family to brainstorm a fun project to liven up your yard or landscape. Here are a few ideas to get you started: a unique birdhouse, colorful bird feeder, artistically painted planter, mosaic walkway or welcome sign, fun sculpture, or musical wind chimes. Whatever you come up with, you can likely find design ideas, instructions, or kits online. GO ON A PICNIC. Pack some finger foods like sandwiches, cheese sticks, veggies and dip, fruit, cookies, and beverages. Then head to the park to enjoy some play, relaxation, and grub.

FUN THINGS TO DO WITH THE KIDS ARTICLE KIMBERLY BLAKER

BUILD A FORT. If you have a stash of construction materials lying around, this is an excellent way to put it to use. Another option is to buy several sections of privacy fencing for prebuilt walls for your fort. There are many ways to build a fort. So search online for easy, low-cost ideas. PLAY DISC GOLF. These courses have popped up in parks everywhere and are fun for all ages. Just head to your nearby sporting goods store and pick up a few discs before you go. GO ON A SCAVENGER HUNT. Make a list of items that are found outdoors, such as an oak leaf, clover, piece of trash, chunk of gravel, dandelion, pop can, speckled rock, wildflower, and so forth. Before heading out for the hunt, set a time limit and any safety rules. Then split up into two teams and see who can bring home the most items on the list. SET UP A LEMONADE STAND. For the entrepreneurial family, this is a fun way to spend a spring day. Bake up cookies or brownies, make some lemonade, and design colorful “Cookies & Lemonade” signs. Then hang the posters at nearby corners and main intersections. Better yet, take advantage of the extra traffic when a neighbor holds a yard sale.

GO FOR A PEDDLE. Whether it’s a ride through your neighborhood or on a paved trail system, a bike ride is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and in all the sights of spring. HOLD A GARAGE OR TOY SALE. Have your kids clean out their old toys and outgrown clothes. Then offer your kids a portion or all of the proceeds for holding or helping with the sale. Be sure to advertise it on Craigslist and post ‘yard sale’ signs on nearby corners and your main intersection. ATTEND A SOCCER OR BASEBALL GAME. Nothing says ‘it’s spring’ like a baseball or soccer game. Get some tickets to a pro baseball game, or check the game schedule for your kids’ school. Before you go, be sure to dress in the colors of your favorite team. TAKE A COUNTRY DRIVE. Spring is the perfect time of year to roll down the windows and take a scenic cruise. Kick back, put on some happy music, and enjoy the blue skies, budding trees, and bursts of colorful flowers.

Trees Return To the Muny MUNY SAVES BELOVED TREES

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CHALLENGES WHEN THE MUNY BEGAN ITS RENOVATION GOING INTO ITS SECOND CENTURY WAS HOW TO SUSTAINABLY RECREATE ITS MAJESTIC TREE CANOPY. As part of the $100 million Second Century Campaign, the Muny now has a new state-of-the-art stage but they didn’t want to lose the original look and feel, with the tree canopy a critical backdrop that everyone had come to love and appreciate. Since day one of renovation planning, the entire Muny team worked with arborists, landscape architects, stage designers and soil experts to make the best decisions possible for its patrons, performers, the stage and the beloved trees. Keeping the mighty oak tree that the audience was accustomed to seeing on Stage Left was the hope all along. Moving through renovation plans, it became obvious that the tree needed to be removed for safety. After years of growing next to concrete structures, without the benefit of a proper growing environment, its root structure was far from healthy and stable. Because of this, the tree was rotting from the inside out.

ARTICLE JUDY PETERS 26

St. Charles County Lifestyle | April 2020

But that 300-year-old oak tree is such an important piece of The Muny’s history, they are working to preserve its legacy for years to come. Urban landscapers and arborists are grafting new trees from the mighty oak and they will be planted at The Muny in a couple years! This season, seven 30-foot-tall trees with root balls about 10 feet in diameter will make their Muny debut just in time for the first show. And the Muny has added a state-of-the-art soil support and irrigation system running through it to make sure the trees have room to grow. The Muny is also dedicated to “growing young talent.” As part of the capital campaign, The Muny recently announced the acquisition of a $10 million gift from the Crawford Taylor Foundation, which will help support The Muny’s Endowment Fund, but is also designated to specifically support The Muny’s education efforts. Currently with eight programs, The Crawford Taylor Education Initiative will provide unprecedented, hands-on instruction and mentoring for youth hoping to pursue a career on or offstage in musical theatre. With this gift, the initiative will aid in the development of new arts education opportunities while improving current programs under a single, cohesive framework. The Endowment Fund ensures a magnificent outdoor musical theatre experience for centuries to come. This fund supports education and community outreach, artistic innovation, production enhancement, facilities maintenance and improvement, and operational sustainability. The Muny’s exciting 2020 season includes the Muny’s Premier of Sweeney Todd, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, and the Midwest regional premiere of On Your Feet! The seven shows are: Chicago (June 15 – 21), Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins (June 24 – July 2), Sweeney Todd (July 6 – 12), Smokey Joe’s Cafe (July 14 – 20), The Sound of Music (July 23 – 29), On Your Feet! (August 1 – 7) and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (August 10 – 16). New season subscriptions will go on sale Monday, March 9 and single tickets will be available beginning Monday, May 11. You can purchase tickets at Muny.org or Metrotix.com. April 2020 | St. Charles County Lifestyle

in our banquet facilities. This is what makes doing business fun -- when people keep returning and become part of the Rendezvous family. We’ve had couples meet here, get engaged here and get married here!” The business truly is a “family affair,” with daughter Kim serving as General Manager. And it’s an award-winning business at that. Rendezvous Cafe & Wine Bar was named Small Business of the Year in 2018 by the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce & Industries. Like its European counterparts, the building has a long history in the city of O’Fallon. It was erected in 1933 as a propane gas and electric business, then purchased by the Ginnever’s who opened a television sales and repair business in the early ‘50s. Residents would bring their lawn chairs and watch the Saturday night fights from the sidewalk in front of the building. The building was also used for other businesses such as an appliance sales and repair shop. Events at Rendezvous include wine dinners, and wine, beer and spirits tastings, a comedy club that has been performing there for more than six years, live music, DIY classes, to name a few. Seeking an event space? The Tuscan banquet room holds up to 65 people and the Provence Room can seat up to 16 people. For more information on all events, visit RendezvousCafeAndWineBar.com.
